n this episode, we explore the rise of AI in Hollywood through the lens of actors and artists. We discuss the promise of AI tools—like virtual readers for self-tapes—and how they could free creatives to focus on their craft, but also warn of the risks when AI replaces human storytelling. Our guest stresses the need for diverse ethical oversight in AI development, drawing parallels to how Facebook's unintended global impact stemmed from a lack of diverse perspectives at creation. Learn why we need more “naysayers” guiding AI's creative applications, where to draw the line between useful automation and creative displacement, and how tech-savvy actors can advocate for their future. The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss the similarities of the TV show cast to the film cast and what that might mean for the show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 2:30 Might point to reduced creativity when making the sets. If they're recasting the cast, why not just use the same sets. To be fair, the silhouette of Hogwarts is iconic as well as some other places, so those should stay the same. But we will hopefully explore the castle more, so they will be forced to come up with new sets.· 9:34 Will this be a character driven story? If these characters are the same, they might be trying to explore different parts of the story. But connecting to the characters is why the fandom has lasted this long, so why wouldn't this story be character driven?· 16:46 If the TV is the same, what is this whole thing for? With a similar cast of characters, what are we really going to learn? A lot! I think there are a lot of things to be gained from this show even if the cast is very similar to the original. With the hours of time they have, I think it is literally impossible for them to avoid showing us more of the story that we got in the films.· 22:00 The new actors should play the character, not the actor. The film actors brought these characters to life with their own interpretations. But the books are the original stories, not the films. The TV show actors should build their own versions of the characters.· 25:53 Actors should act in the moment, not the future. There are no secrets now. Everyone knows what is to come. But that opens to door to explore the story more deeply. However, they shouldn't rely on the audience's knowledge of what's to come to give individual moments meaning.Having anything you want to hear or say? On this special short episode of Humanitarian AI Today, guest host Brent Phillips sits down with Tigmanshu Bhatnagar, a lecturer at University College London (UCL), and Hamdan Albishi, a UCL MSc student in AI for Sustainable Development. Tigmanshu and Hamdan discuss a toolkit they are developing, designed to empower non-technical humanitarian actors to build their own ethical AI projects. They walk through the toolkit's four-phase process—Reflection, Scoping, Feasibility Assessment, and Development—which guides users from an initial idea to a simulated, ethically-sound AI project without needing deep technical expertise. Toolkit users define a problem, identify beneficiaries, and consider potential unintended harm. The tool presents existing use cases and projects in the same problem area to educate the user. The toolkit helps users assess project feasibility based on resources and regulations. It can also suggest publicly available humanitarian datasets and helps check them for completeness and bias to avoid unintended harm. The tool suggests appropriate technical solutions, generates a project with embedded ethical guardrails, and runs it in a simulated environment to validate its accuracy and impact before real-world deployment This initiative emerged from a UK Humanitarian Innovation Hub (UKHIH) and Elrha-funded project, which found that humanitarian organizations, despite their commitment, faced a steep learning curve in creating tangible AI solutions. The toolkit addresses AI adoption challenges and aims to help humanitarian actors develop responsible AI projects for users, regardless of their technical background.

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 316: Adam Newport-Berra The Studio creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg exploited every part of their knowledge and experience in the film industry to find the show's humor. Cinematographer Adam Newport-Berra worked closely with Rogen and Goldberg to achieve the show's signature style. They found the most dynamic ways to shoot scenes, with camera movements that immerse the audience in the characters' anxiety and panic. “It meant moving with the characters, moving through spaces, and finding ways to just keep the momentum of a scene going,” Adam explains. “We made very strong decisions early in the process. We're only gonna shoot with one camera, we're gonna shoot every scene in one shot, we're gonna shoot with one lens. It funnels down your choices and your options on set in a way that I think is really special. I think we make the most creative decisions when we're limited.” The Studio relies on nimble, handheld camera work on gimbals and magnetic rigs for its many one-shot takes. The crew avoided over-intellectualizing each scene, prioritizing a dynamic feel and incorporating homages to numerous films. “I think a lot of it really came down to the writing and the material,” says Adam. “Seth and Evan are very smart. They've been doing this for a long time. They know what they like and they leaned into that in the writing.” While a script provided the foundation, many scenes were reworked on set. Rogen and Goldberg would collaborate with the actors to refine the rhythm and enhance the material. Actors frequently contributed lines and ideas, leading to on-the-spot script revisions. However, improvisation had to fit into the impeccable timing for both the acting and camera work, leaving little room for error. Some shots required 20 takes, with the initial few serving as warmups. “It was a very non-traditional way to make a show,” Adam notes, “but everyone's firing on all cylinders, everyone's bringing 100 percent.” Rather than creating traditional shot lists, Rogen and Goldberg would work out complex camera moves with the crew directly on location. Often, they'd envision a desired shot and then structure the scene to organically lead to it. The crew and actors would block and rehearse scenes together and separately, allowing the story to unfold naturally. For a show as dynamic as The Studio, Adam learned to keep the lighting as simple as possible. The lighting had to take a backseat to the camera movement, so typically, every episode relied on natural light. Adam trusted in modern camera sensor technology and the colorist to ensure the actors looked their best. But he did have opportunities to experiment with light and shadow in specific episodes, such as “The Missing Reel,” which embraced a film noir look, and “The Golden Globes,” which used stage lighting and uplighting on the tables. “I think what works about this show was the fact that it does skewer itself, it is self-deprecating, it does show how absurd our life is and it was kind of refreshing to be able to talk about that publicly,” says Adam. “A lot of the people in my life don't understand what I do, so it's been fun to tell these stories and to show how absurd our profession is, the conflict between art and commerce, and how much we care about it.” Find Adam Newport-Berra: https://adamnewportberra.com/ Instagram: @adamnewportberra The Studio is on Apple TV+ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: https://hotrodcameras.com/ Sponsored by Laowa by Venus Optics: https://www.venuslens.net/ The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: @TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Blue Sky: @thecinepod.bsky.social

In this episode: Why Ali and Neil decided to become therapists Working together as a couple The private practice now Marketing the practice: highs and lows Why authenticity is important Advice to listeners Why Ali and Neil decided to become therapists As Ali explains, the relationship between the director and the actors is intimate and collaborative. Actors and directors alike draw from their personal experiences when they are creating productions and plays together. A few years later, Ali worked on a series of shows about mental health for pre-teen audiences called “One Deep Breath”, which was toured and presented to over 80,000 students in Ontario. This sparked a deeper interest in her to pursue becoming a therapist herself. For Neil, it came from his teaching experience. Students would come to him and discuss their lifepaths beyond education, and Neil found himself talking with them for a long time. Working together as a couple Ali and Neil have been working as a team for years. They have collaborated professionally and creatively for such a long time that it felt obvious and familiar for them to decide to go into private practice together as well. They have worked at perfecting how to manage working together as a couple, such as when to talk to each other and discuss new things to do if any resentment builds, how to show and give appreciation, and providing safe and loving spaces outside of work that they can share. The private practice now The practice has been going well for them. Since it is still small, they appreciate connecting with clients, because these clients choose the two of them specifically, rather than a big organization. Marketing the practice: highs and lows Both Neil and Ali have leaned into their strengths when it comes to marketing the practice. Neil brings people together, hosts in-person meetings and therapy, and connects with other therapists, creating a strong network of professionals and client referrals. Ali does more one-on-one work and brings in new people into the practice in this way. Why authenticity is important However, they decided to pull back on paid ads and social media. They experimented with it for some time, but it just didn't work how they had anticipated. Advice to listeners Put things in writing! It helps protect you from resentment (with your partner, family, best friends, or other people whom you care for). Write down clear roles and responsibilities, because it creates a sense of freedom, rather than stress. There's a reason why the British theatre maker Tim Crouch doesn't want his actors to hear this podcast — it's because they're not supposed to know anything about their role until an hour before the show. This year, Tim's award-winning play “An Oak Tree” turns 20. It's one of the strangest and most influential theatre experiments in history, and it's currently being staged at the Luminato Festival in Toronto. Each performance is completely unique, shaped by the presence of a different guest actor, including past celebrity guests like Frances McDormand, Mike Myers and Alan Cumming. Tim sits down with guest host Gill Deacon to talk about the risk in live performance, the power of not-knowing, and why this show still resonates 20 years on.
