What happens when an art historian discovers Nazi memorabilia being sold at auction houses without ethical consideration? For Beatrice Levine, it sparked a journey that would transform her career and personal identity.Growing up as a military child in Germany during the 1990s, Beatrice developed a natural curiosity about Holocaust history and her own Jewish heritage. Though her father was ethnically Jewish, her family practiced the cultural aspects rather than religious observance – what Beatrice colorfully describes as "that East Coast big, lox-loving Jewish family" where everyone watched Seinfeld and said "oy" but didn't attend synagogue. This early exposure to German history planted seeds that would later bloom in unexpected ways. After pursuing art history and landing positions at prestigious auction houses, Beatrice witnessed disturbing practices surrounding Nazi artifacts and potentially looted artwork. The auction world's casual approach to selling items like Hermann Göring's weapons and Nazi tableware created what she calls "a queasy feeling" that eventually led her to specialize in provenance research – tracking the ownership history of artworks to identify those stolen during the Holocaust. The resistance she encountered when raising ethical concerns revealed how deeply rooted these problems were in the art world. When academic institutions pushed back against her research focus, Beatrice found her way to specialized Holocaust studies programs, ultimately pursuing a PhD focused on these ethical questions. Perhaps most remarkably, she formally converted to Judaism in 2023, completing her Mikvah ceremony just one month after the October 7 attacks – a decision that speaks volumes about her commitment to this path.Today, Beatrice balances serious academic work with a lighthearted approach to art history on her popular social media accounts. Her "Culture Quota" Instagram follows her mantra of providing "safe spaces" where people can enjoy art and culture as a respite from constant heaviness, while still occasionally addressing serious historical topics.Whether discussing the ethical dilemmas of inherited Nazi artifacts or sharing her favorite Real Housewives moments, Beatrice brings authenticity and depth to every conversation. Her story reminds us that confronting difficult history isn't just an academic exercise – it's deeply personal work that can transform both individual lives and our collective understanding of the past. What artifacts from difficult periods of history do you have questions about? Join the conversation and let us know how you navigate these complex ethical waters.TopDogToursTopDogTours is your walking tour company. On today's episode of Interview With An Artist, we talk about: what winning the Brett Whitely travelling scholarship meant to her practice why she refused to show or engage with the commercial world of art for the first five years of her career how she made the leap from full time work AND painting, to purely painting how she came to be represented by arthouse gallery what impact moving between genres has on her practice the role chess plays in her life, you'll love this! Nicole states that painting is life for her. And when you hear about her dedication and approach to her practice, you really see it is. Nicole also runs workshops and retreats so if you like the sound of learning under her, head to her website and sign up to her mailing list. ******** Interview With An Artist is hosted and produced by Willy (Wilamina) Russo. Along with Championing the arts through this podcast and her radio work at 2ser107.3FM, Willy is also an artist mentor. She works with artists from a variety of stages and backgrounds, helping them figure out the right next step in their artistic practice. What did Jay-Z say to Zack Greenburg, about Empire State of Mind, the book Zack wrote about his life? What was the response to another of Zack's books- The A-List Angels, how a band of Actors, Artists, and Athletes hacked Silicone Valley? Or Michael Jackson's family after Zack covered the surprising rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story of how the King of Pop grew a billion-dollar business? Let's not stop there, the 3 Kings: Diddy, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and his book on Hip-Hop's Multibillion-Dollar Rise If you are fascinated by the intersection between music, media and money, there is one person to stand beside. Zack O'Malley Greenburg. His career began trying to avoid becoming a writer after witnessing the financial and emotional ups and downs his writer-parents experienced. But he was always drawn to it, and he was gifted. What began with the school paper became a decade as Forbes senior editor, and today Zack is not only a best-selling author; he is in control of his content at Substack. Zack describes how he landed his first job at Forbes and his big break when an editor asked him to help put together a list of the top-earning rappers of all time. Zack launched the Cash Kings List – an annual ranking of hip hop's top earners and the artists who would try to talk their way up the list – as well as the ones who wanted to be left off – and the prestige that came to those who made it to the top. It is a fascinating episode that offers valuable lessons in career building, finding a lane, and creating captivating content. We also hear some great stories about celebrities, and they no longer sing for their supper; they own it all. And to top off the episode Nicole Kelly, Director of Platform Engagement, RBC X and one of the smartest people I have talked to about scaling companies, joins the show to talk about their mission to propel Canada's innovation agenda forward. As she says, “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together. To find Zack's work on Substack. zogblog.com Twitter, IG, LinkedIn are @zogblog as well. This is the second episode of my summer series where I'm bringing you longer conversations with past podcast guests, from recordings when taking video of the artists for the Talking with Painters YouTube channel. The video of this episode's fabulous artist, Nicole Kelly, is the second most watched on the channel, which currently has over 150 videos*. Nicole Kelly is an acclaimed Sydney artist, having won multiple art prizes, and you can find out more about her career and how she became an artist in my original 2019 podcast interview (episode 75). In this episode she talks about working en plein air, how she sources colour for her work, the importance of making mistakes and lots more. Her next solo show ‘Opacity of Time' with her Melbourne gallery, This Is No Fantasy, opens on 25 February 2022 and I've included a selection of the exciting works going into that show below. Nicole also has a solo show coming up in August with Arthouse Gallery in Sydney and her work will be included in a curated show ‘Quintet: 5 southern Sydney Artists' at Hazelhurst Arts Centre in September. Its hard to explain what I love about Nicole's work but there's a kind of mystery and romance to her paintings through her use of colour and mark which draws me in every time. To hear this episode press 'play' beneath the above feature photo. * The most watched video is the first 'loading dock' video where I interviewed entrants to the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2019. In podcast episode 101 I spoke with leading Australian artist Joshua Yeldham in the lead-up to his sell-out show ‘Providence' at Arthouse Gallery in Sydney. I remember being fascinated by his approach to painting and his views on the creative process. We also recorded a separate video and this episode is the first of my 2022 Summer Series which is a collection of extended audio recordings from videos I've taken of my podcast guests. Joshua's works are extraordinary. His paintings often involve an element of carving into the wooden surface of the work and in some cases he inserts pieces of cane which add a further dimension to the work. But it's the physical method of doing that work which enhances his creative process and you'll hear him explain this and many other aspects of his practice in this episode. If you're in Sydney you can see several stunning Yeldham works in Arthouse Gallery's Summer group show which also includes work of podcast guests Colin Pennock, Susan Baird, Nicole Kelly, Jo Bertini, Michaye Boulter and Belinda Fox as well as many other skilled artists. The exhibition continues until 29 January 2022. In a remote location north of the Bay Area we didnt so much escape reality as re-create it. The landscape — the fog, the tall trees, the fields dotted with craters and other land art — was a canvas that we played with projecting onto. For two weeks (the length of our residency) we got to live inside of our own imaginations. (Whose imagination are we living in normally? What are we subtly taught to fear? To worship?) In our utopic visions art and queers and femmes have power. Our utopia is creative and collaborative and fun. On the sun porch, we listened to BUFU — our interviews with Kat, Jazmine, Tsige, and Sonia last summer — and heard more signs of utopic scheming & also signs of emergence, the theory of political organizing popularized by the writer and activist adrienne maree brown. Actually, it was BUFU who first told us about Emergent Strategy, when we were just starting to make our own forays into collective organizing and programming. adrienne says imagination is a battle. Spring 2017: NK went to a panel at the California African-American Museum in Los Angeles. The dancer Taisha Pagget was in conversation with the curator Erin Christovale, and Taisha told Erin how her ballet training had institutionalized the natural rhythm out of her. Which made NK think about her own experiences in a graduate writing program — how her writing developed a double consciousness, and how she started going to parties in a cheap blonde wig and hot pink lipstick, a costume which she eventually called WHITE DRAG. This is her experience of literary passing. Original writing by Nicole Kelly. Produced by Elyssa Dudley. Bitchface is written, hosted, recorded, and produced by Nicole Kelly & Phoebe Unter.

"Libidinal flows cut through the social world.” Desire, sensuality, romance, sex — they dont exist in a vacuum, somehow free from the politics that dictate our public lives. "Desire flows and circulates amongst places of employment, intellectual debates, political organizing, artistic circles, playgrounds, and cemeteries.” Post-couple form, we began to look elsewhere for connection. In this episode we're guided by our burning questions: Can touching your friends be sensual, without being sexual? Can friendships be fluid — romantic one day, and not the next? What is the boundary between friendship and romance? Is there a boundary at all? INTIMACY is part 2 of a three part series on our search for solidarity and intimacy. Against the Couple Form # 1: LOVE "The couple functions as the threshold, the admission fee, the golden key that allows a woman to participate in the social world. The couple grants a woman personhood and social visibility. She obtains a title, a temporality, a space through the couple. MALE FANTASIES, MALE FANTASIES is everything run by male fantasies? If you believe Margaret Atwood the male gaze is inescapable. If a man isn't looking at you (but tbh when is he not?) then you are your own voyeur, always seeing yourself as male culture (“entertainment”) has taught you to -- whether you know it or not. “Protagonism is propaganda that protects and perpetuates privilege,” Jill Soloway announced at TIFF this fall. Gina Young put it another way: “The people with all the power control the stories that get told.” And the stories they're telling are often narratives that reduce women to objects and false dichotomies, narratives that are designed to teach us how to behave, how to be in service of a male agenda, how to be. This episode is about taking control of the ways we're seen -- the ways we're looked at, in what context, on whose terms, and for what purposes. This episode is about two women and two ideas in conversation: What would media look like if we told our own stories? And how could those stories give us permission to really be ourselves? THE FEMALE GAZE is how we see the world, ourselves, & each other. In this episode WE DISSECT DIRECTOR JILL SOLOWAY'S MASTER CLASS: Jill Soloway perfectly articulates our rage, suggestions for what cis-males should do in the feminist utopia, and why Zack Morris is the epitome of white dude fragility. WE VISIT GINA YOUNG'S FEMINIST ACTING CLASS: The tragedies of Hollywood typecasting, queer casting calls and feminist sororities, and how to maintain your sanity when your body is a commodity. This episode features music by DEATH VALLEY GIRLS and INTI WAWA. Hosting by NICOLE KELLY & PHOEBE ÜNTER. Produced by Phoebe and mastered by audiobruja ELYSSA DUDLEY. 1.
