We are back on the road this week for an insightful visit with Ray Zage, CEO of Tiga Investments, and Shon Hiatt, Director of the Zage Business of Energy Initiative and Associate Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern California. Ray is a seasoned global investor who has led Tiga since 2017. He began his career at Goldman Sachs and has held roles in Singapore, New York, and Los Angeles. He serves on multiple boards and also advises early-stage technology ventures. Shon joined the USC Marshall School of Business from Harvard in 2014 and is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Hamm Institute for American Energy. His research focuses on entrepreneurship, global strategy, innovation and sustainability. This week, USC is hosting its annual Energy Business Summit (details here). We were delighted to spend time with Ray and Shon to hear their perspectives on today's evolving academic and energy landscape. In our conversation, we discuss the Zage Business of Energy Initiative and its mission to build a pipeline of future energy leaders equipped to develop practical investment approaches and spark innovation and entrepreneurship across industries. Shon reflects on his research in Europe, noting parallels with California's energy challenges, and Ray shares his motivation to support broader, more objective research in energy beyond just “cleanliness,” shaped in part by his experiences across Asia and his perspective on long-term, balanced energy policy. We explore the history of energy at USC, California's refining and energy policy challenges, lessons from Asia, China, and Singapore's long-term planning, the growing energy needs of data centers in Asia versus the U.S., and the strategic positioning of countries like Singapore. We touch on the USC Energy Business Summit and its lineup of topics from energy storage and renewables, nuclear energy, and AI and energy demand, as well as the growing interest among students in pursuing energy careers. We address global electricity demand trends, energy affordability in emerging economies, the impacts of geopolitical instability on energy security, China's energy strategy, the global competition for raw materials, nuclear power developments, Silicon Valley's growing embrace of nuclear and natural gas, the need for durable laws to support long-term energy investment, and more. We greatly enjoyed the discussion and appreciate Shon and Ray for joining. Mike Bradley kicked us off by noting that markets were largely focused this week on the impending U.S. government shutdown. Over the past 50 years, there have been 21 shutdowns with an average length of 7-8 days. The longest shutdown was 35 days (Dec. 2018 to Jan. 2019), which occurred during President Trump's first term. On the bond market front, the 10-year bond yield (4.15%) was down marginally this week on the impending shutdown. Bond markets are mostly focused on employment reports this week (JOLTS Job Openings, Initial Jobless Claims and Nonfarm Payrolls) which would be delayed in a shutdown. On the broader equity market front, the S&P 500 seems to be in “no man's land” at least until investors see the outcome and duration of this impending shutdown. On the crude oil market front, WTI price was down ~$3/bbl (~$63/bbl) this week for a couple potential reasons. Oil traders are growing concerned that OPEC+ could announce an oil production increase for November of 500kbpd (and 1.5mmbpd over the next three months) at their October 5th Meeting, which would increase the 2026 global oil surplus even further. In addition, President Trump's Gaza Peace Plan may also be weighing a little bit on oil price because it eliminates any “perceived” war premium in oil prices. He ended by discussing the impending Fermi America IPO (FRMI). Fermi, co-founded by former Energy Secretary Rick Perry, is a planned 11 GW energy and data center c

In this thought-provoking episode, Shon Gerber explores the projected $450 billion impact AI will have by 2028 and what this means for security professionals today. With only 2% of companies having fully deployed AI solutions and 39% not yet exploring them, we're at the beginning of a massive shift that will fundamentally change how organizations approach security. Shon provides a candid assessment of why cybersecurity roles haven't yet been automated (risk aversion) and why this protection is temporary—predicting significant changes within the next five years. For CISSP candidates, the episode delivers exceptional value through a detailed breakdown of five Domain 1 questions. Rather than simply providing correct answers, Shon dissects each question to reveal the underlying principles and reasoning. This approach helps listeners develop the critical thinking needed to succeed not just on the exam, but in real-world security scenarios. The questions cover essential security concepts including risk treatment strategies, due diligence versus due care, professional ethics, policy versus procedure distinctions, and governance structures. Each explanation includes common points of confusion and practical workplace applications, bridging the gap between exam preparation and professional practice.Perhaps most valuable is Shon advice on navigating ethical dilemmas in security consulting. In this discussion, Cristina Flaschen, CEO of Pandium, speaks with Heather Flanagan, Principal at Spherical Cow Consulting, and Shon Urbas, CTO of Pandium, about the complex realities of building integrations when identity, compliance, and data governance are on the line.Heather's Background and Identity-Centric LensHeather Flanagan draws on years of experience in identity standards, advising governments, nonprofits, and tech companies on secure identity flows. At Spherical Cow Consulting, she emphasizes that integrations are not just about API connections. They must preserve identity and policy context across systems. This lens shapes how she evaluates long-term integration quality.Identity is the DataIn many cases, identity itself is the data being transferred. Systems are not just passing files. They are transmitting roles, permissions, and group memberships. A failure in handling identity correctly can result in unauthorized access or users being locked out. This is especially critical in sectors like government and education. The Hidden Work Behind “It Just Works”Heather and Shon note that behind every seamless integration is complex logic. Connecting identity systems like SCIM, SAML, and OpenID Connect requires shared understanding across platforms. A major challenge is the assumption that systems interpret identity attributes the same way.Integration as InfrastructureShon sees integrations as core infrastructure, not just product features. At Pandium, his team treats them as reusable, composable flows. Even with modern tools, reliable integrations depend on clear contracts around data formats, identity handling, and error recovery.MCP: Open Source, Not a StandardHeather and Shon discuss the growing hype around MCP, the Model Context Protocol, often mislabeled as a standard. Heather explains that MCP is an open source project from Anthropic, not a true standard, since it lacks formal security reviews, governance, and cross-industry consensus. Shon notes that while it may help drive adoption of existing protocols like OAuth 2, it adds little technical innovation and risks moving too fast without proper safeguards. When Identity Meets GovernanceHeather stresses that integration design must align with governance requirements. In regulated environments, even passing a field like email may require approval. Developers must understand what data can be shared and what must stay controlled.Building Trust Into the StackTrust requires more than encryption. It depends on visibility into what moved, when, and why. Heather advocates for logging and traceability as essential for debugging and for building confidence in identity-driven systems. For more insights on integrations, identity, and APIs, visit www.pandium.com.Read Heather's blog: https://sphericalcowconsulting.com/Heather's book recommendation: Clockspeed: Winning Industry Control in the Age of Temporary Advantage
Send us a textThe medieval castle with its moat, high walls, and sentries provides the perfect metaphor for modern cybersecurity. Just as each defensive element served a specific purpose in protecting the castle, today's information security requires multiple layers working in concert to safeguard digital assets.Shon Gerber opens this episode with a timely discussion of the UnitedHealthcare ransomware attack, which reportedly cost $22 million and sparked controversy around the CISO's qualifications. This real-world example perfectly frames the importance of defense in depth strategies that could have prevented such a catastrophic breach. The core of defense in depth involves implementing multiple security controls that protect various aspects of information systems. Shon walks through each layer, starting with perimeter security (firewalls, IDS/IPS systems), moving to access controls and data security (encryption, DLP), and continuing through system hardening and detection mechanisms. Each layer serves two crucial purposes: stopping attackers altogether or, at minimum, slowing them down enough that they move on to easier targets.Particularly enlightening is Shon's breakdown of abstraction in security - how operating systems, networking protocols, databases, and APIs hide complexity from users while maintaining protection. This concept extends to data hiding techniques like steganography, tokenization, and encryption that conceal sensitive information from prying eyes. The episode concludes with an examination of secure defaults - the principle that systems should ship with security enabled rather than requiring manual configuration. Shon provides practical guidance on implementing secure defaults and overcoming common challenges like vendor limitations and legacy systems.Whether you're studying for the CISSP exam or looking to strengthen your organization's security posture, this episode delivers actionable insights on building robust, multi-layered defense strategies that balance protection with usability. THE MERMAID, 105min., USA Directed by Soudabeh Moradian A mysterious girl is saved from drowning by a fragmented family living in a desolate beach house. Her strange relationship with them becomes intimate and complex until everything reaches to a point of no return. https://www.instagram.com/themermaidmovie/ Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? The Mermaid was born out of a personal urgency to explore the psychological aftermath of trauma—particularly when it's silenced or dismissed. I wanted to create a space for a character who's constantly gaslit, both by her inner world and the people around her, and to blur the line between dream and reality. It's a reflection on emotional abuse, xenophobia, and isolation, wrapped in the aesthetics of psychological horror. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? It took more than three years from the initial concept to the final cut. Development and writing were fairly quick, but production and especially post-production were long and complicated—partly due to budget constraints and doing so much of the work myself. How would you describe your film in two words!? Hauntingly intimate. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? Financing and post-production. I wore multiple hats—writer, director, producer, editor —and managing everything independently while teaching full-time at Syracuse University was incredibly draining. There were moments I truly thought it wouldn't get finished. What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video? It was surreal and deeply moving. Hearing people connect to the emotional undercurrents, even if they interpreted things differently, made me feel like the risks I took paid off. Send us a textEver wonder why organizations with robust cybersecurity teams still fall victim to devastating attacks? The answer often lies not in fancy technology but in something far more fundamental: documentation. In this eye-opening episode, Shon Gerber takes listeners into the critical world of cybersecurity documentation hierarchy, revealing how properly structured policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines form an organization's first and most important line of defense against threats. The stakes couldn't be higher. As Shon reveals, cybercriminals stole a record-breaking $6.6 billion from US entities last year - a shocking 33% increase from the previous year. Business Email Compromise alone accounted for $2.7 billion in losses, while individuals over 60 remain the most vulnerable demographic. What separates organizations that survive these threats from those that don't? Proper documentation that actually works rather than gathering digital dust. Shon breaks down the hierarchical relationship between different types of security documentation, providing real-world examples from healthcare and financial institutions to illustrate how these documents should build upon each other to create comprehensive protection. You'll learn why policies should represent management intent, standards should specify requirements, procedures should provide step-by-step guidance, and guidelines should offer flexibility - all while avoiding common pitfalls that render documentation useless. Shon provides practical advice on creating documentation that's clear, accessible, and actually used rather than just created to appease auditors.Whether you're preparing for the CISSP exam or working to strengthen your organization's security posture, this episode provides invaluable insights into creating documentation that transforms from a bureaucratic burden into powerful protection. We meet bestselling writer Shon Faye to discuss her new book Love In Exile and artists she admires: Nan Goldin, The Bloomsbury Group, Bernini, Michelangelo, Pedro Almodóvar's Bad Education and performers including Tom Rasmussen, Madonna and David Hoyle.Shon Faye grew up quietly obsessed with the feeling that love was not for her. Not just romantic love: the secret fear of her own unworthiness penetrated every aspect and corner of her life. It was a fear that would erupt in destructive, counterfeit versions of the real love she craved: addictions and short-lived romances that were either euphoric and fantastical, or excruciatingly painful and unhinged, often both. Faye's experience of the world as a trans woman, who grew up visibly queer, exacerbated her fears. But, as she confronted her damaging ideas about love and lovelessness, she came to realize that this sense of exclusion is symptomatic of a much larger problem in our culture.Love, she argues, is as much a collective question as a personal one. Yet our collective ideals of love have developed in a society which is itself profoundly sick and loveless; in which consumer capitalism sells us ever new, engrossing fantasies of becoming more loved or lovable. In this highly politicized terrain, boundaries are purposefully drawn to keep some in and to keep others out. Those who exist outside them are ignored, denigrated, exiled. In Love in Exile, Shon Faye shows love is much greater than the narrow ideals we have been taught to crave so desperately that we are willing to bend and break ourselves to fit them. Wise, funny, unsparing, and suffused with a radical clarity, this is a book of and for our times: for seeing and knowing love, in whatever form it takes, is the meaning of life itself.Shon Faye is author of the acclaimed bestseller The Transgender Issue. Her work has been published in, among others, the Guardian, Independent, British Vogue and VICE. Born in Bristol, she now lives in London. As Frieze magazine recently wrote: Shon Faye is one of the most celebrated non-fiction authors in the UK, rising to fame for her discerning prose on culture, relationships and class. Her first book, The Transgender Issue (2021), a provocative treatise on gender identity debates in the UK, was part of her rise to fame. Not only did Faye offer a detailed survey of queer history, but she also indicated why trans-liberation is connected to liberation for all. Her new book of essays, Love in Exile (2025), explores the existential and social challenges of courtship and heartache. Rather than focus solely on the discrimination that many transgender people face, however, the text is a literary memoir that interrogates how ancient and present-day writers conceptualize and dissect love. As a Vogue contributor with her advice column ‘Dear Shon' (2022–ongoing), host of the podcast Call Me Mother (2021–ongoing) and author of Dazed & Confused Magazine's ‘Future of Sex' series (2022–ongoing), she addresses the topic of romance with honesty and poise.Follow @Shon.Faye on InstagramBuy Love in Exile, published by Pengiun. You can also follow @TalkArt for images of all artworks discussed in today's episode. Shon Hiatt is a business professor and director of the Business of Energy Transition initiative at the University of Southern California. He researches entrepreneurship, strategy, innovation, and sustainability, with an emphasis in energy and agribusiness. His work has been published in leading academic journals and featured in popular media outlets. Before joining USC, he was a faculty member at Harvard Business School. In this episode we discuss the following: The demand for energy, specifically and surprisingly for coal and petroleum, has never been greater, especially with the growth of energy-intensive data centers that power AI. But each energy source comes with tradeoffs, so the more diversified energy sources countries have, the greater potential for resiliency when shocks hit the system. Estimates indicate that an electric car only becomes less carbon intensive than a combustion engine after it's been driven for 100,000 miles, in part because dirty energy is often used to charge the batteries, plus mining the material to create the batteries is energy intensive. While nuclear power is quite clean and becoming much safer, it is especially expensive due to regulatory burdens that haven't been updated with the latest technology. And while wind and solar help meet overall demand, they cannot reliably hit base load demand. As Shon tells his students, the holy grail for energy production balances security, safety, affordability, reliability, and cleanliness. In other words, when it comes to energy policy there are no simple solutions. Only tradeoffs.
