A few months ago, I interviewed David Leonhardt, author of Ours Was the Shining Future, about the death of the American dream which, he argued, can be dated from on 5 June 1968 when Bobby Kennedy was assassinated. And it's on that infamous date that I begun my conversation with Jonathan Taplin about the rebirth of the American dream. According to the Los Angeles based Taplin, who is now working on a book about an upcoming renaissance of American culture, the vehicle for a revitalized United States will come from a Sixties style explosion of cultural vitality. Bright new music, film and books will create a bright new America, Taplin predicts. I hope he's right.Jonathan Taplin is a writer, film producer and scholar. He is the Director Emeritus of the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California and was a Professor at the USC Annenberg School from 2003-2016 in the field of international communication management and digital media entertainment. Taplin began his entertainment career in 1969 as Tour Manager for Bob Dylan and The Band. In 1973 he produced Martin Scorsese's first feature film, Mean Streets, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Between 1974 and 1996, Taplin produced 26 hours of television documentaries (including The Prize and Cadillac Desert for PBS) and 12 feature films including The Last Waltz, Until The End of the World, Under Fire and To Die For. His films were nominated for Oscar and Golden Globe awards and chosen for The Cannes Film Festival five times. In 1984 Taplin acted as the investment advisor to the Bass Brothers in their successful attempt to save Walt Disney Studios from a corporate raid. This experience brought him to Merrill Lynch, where he served as vice president of media mergers and acquisitions. In this role, he helped re-engineer the media landscape on transactions such as the leveraged buyout of Viacom. Taplin was a founder of Intertainer and has served as its Chairman and CEO since June 1996. Intertainer was the pioneer video-on-demand company for both cable and broadband Internet markets. Taplin holds two patents for video on demand technologies. Professor Taplin has provided consulting services on Broadband technology to the President of Portugal and the Parliament of the Spanish state of Catalonia and the Government of Singapore. To Die For by David Baldacci Travis Devine has become a pro at adapting to any situation to accomplish the mission set in front of him. Whether it's a high-powered corporate setting or small-town community, Devine will become the man for the job. His time as an Army Ranger and on the financial battlefields of Wall Street gave him the skills he needed, and he's put them to good use. But this time it's not his skills that send him to Seattle to aid the FBI in escorting orphaned, twelve-year-old Betsy Odom to a meeting with her uncle, who's under investigation for RICO charges. Instead, he's hoping to lie low and keep off the radar of an enemy that he evaded on a train in Switzerland and who has been after him ever since—the girl on the train. But as Devine gets to know Betsy, questions begin to arise around the death of her parents. Betsy is adamant that they had never used drugs, but the police in the small rural town where they died insist the Odoms died of an overdose. Devine starts digging for answers, and what he finds points to a conspiracy bigger than he could've ever imagined. The question is, how do Betsy, her uncle, and various government agencies all fit into it. It might finally be time for Devine and the girl on the train to come face-to-face, and when that happens, Devine is going to find himself unsure of who are his allies and who are his enemies. And in some cases, they might well be both. From #1 New York Times bestselling author, David Baldacci, the 6:20 Man returns in TO DIE FOR, this time sent to the Pacific Northwest to aid the in a complicated FBI case – and he's about to come face-to-face with his nemesis, the girl on the train.   Travis Devine has become a pro at accomplishing any mission he's given. But this time it's not his skills that send him to Seattle to aid the FBI in escorting orphaned, twelve-year-old Betsy Odom to a meeting with her uncle, who's under federal investigation. Instead, he's hoping to lay low and keep off the radar of an enemy – the girl on the train.  But as Devine gets to know Betsy, questions begin to arise around the death of her parents. Devine digs for answers, and what he finds points to a conspiracy bigger than he could've ever imagined. It might finally be time for Devine and the girl on the train to come face-to-face. Devine is going to find out the difference between his friends and his enemies – and in some cases, they might well be both.    David Baldacci is a global #1 bestselling author, and one of the world's favorite storytellers. https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/11/08/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-5-richard-drew-on-to-die-for-1995/ I very much wanted to speak to the wonderful Richard Drew about TO DIE FOR (Gus Van Sant, 1995). Richard has a degree in Film and Literature so knows something about film, yet unusually for the guests on this podcast, he is not a Gus Van Sant fan. More importantly, Richard is a television producer, now based in Los Angeles, but who got his start on the ground floor of Reality TV in England and has worked on BIG BROTHER, SECOND SURVIVOR, FAME ACADEMY, and many more. He is now SVP of Development at Law and Crime Productions, specialising in True Crime Documentaries. His latest work, JAILBREAK: LOVE ON THE RUN is currently on Netlfix. All of this to say he is ideally suited to speak to the film's main themes. In the podcast we discuss how TO DIE FOR draws on the talk show culture of the era (Oprah, Geraldo, Sally Jesse Raphael, Phil Donahue) as well as the rise of celebrity culture in print (PEOPLE, US) and Television (ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT). It's a film that's very much about not only a grasping for fame, but for television and televisual fame. We talk of the performances, the film's form and structure, how it's a story complexly told but in a manner that's experienced as simple and direct. All this and much more can be heard in the podcast above:

His podcast, To Live & Die in L.A., hit number one on the iTunes charts and spent four months in the top ten, where it was named the best podcast of the year by The Associated Press and one of the ten best podcasts of the year by Apple. His most recent book collaborations include The Creative Act with Rick Rubin, which entered the New York Times bestseller list at number one and has been on the list for 76 weeks so far (and is still there), and I Can't Make This Up with Kevin Hart, which also entered The New York Times bestseller list at number one. Other New York Times bestsellers of his include The Truth, Emergency, Everyone Loves You When You're Dead, and The Game, which has the dubious distinction of being the most stolen book at Barnes and Noble besides The Bible. This week's review is onThe Agent - No spoilers ! It's been a minute and to welcome us back is a really good one. The Agent is a 2022 Webby Award honoree and so good that I had to borrow his book “Deep Undercover: My Secret Life and Tangled Allegiances as a KGB Spy in America” from the library. The 15 episode series tells the true story of Jack Barsky's life as a KGB spy during the cold war when he spent 10 years undercover leading two very different secret lives. It's this amazing narrative told by Barsky himself that weaves together Jack Barsky the person and Jasck Barsky the spy until something happens that leads him to have to choose between the two. The story is so immersive and wraps you up in his life. I didn't want it to be over even though in total the podcast is over 3 days' worth of audio content. It really does look at his whole life and not just what he did for work. That might be too much backstory for some, but I love glimpses into the lives of others, especially one this fascinating. It's a production of Imperative Entertainment and Windjoy and was the brainchild of Jason Hoch. Barsky, of course, plays a huge role in how the story is told. It has 4.7 out of 5 stars with 1,100 ratings but still had some common themes in the reviews. First, I think the show was once paywalled but isn't anymore. I was able to listen to all of the episodes on PocketCasts. Then there's some reviews about the Jack Barsky as a person but honestly we're not there to like Jack. Like most people his not a villain or a hero, he's just a person and this is his story. I don't think people get very far or learn anything from someone they just write off as one or the others and I encourage you to listen to the story holistically. I really appreciated his authenticity and humility. He's honest and acknowledges bad choices he's made and how that effected others. Some have labeled this as ego but putting asisde the fact that he was a spy and I'm sure that's a job requirement, I did not feel the same. Similar pods: Agent of Betrayal, To Die For, and The Miami Chronicles. All right, guys, that's all for this week but remember if you want to see the cover art, sources, or the written transcript for this episode be sure to check out the show notes. Quint also faces: a daughter filing a restraining order against him on behalf of the high school, the same local quarterback threatening to kill his dog, and a young woman cop who orders a vanilla latte.
