Each month, writers gather for feedback at Script Lab Laurie Slattery, who discovered Savage Wonder's Script Lab online and appreciated the nonprofit's focus on veterans, showed up for the first time at a workshop last month. Her grandfather stormed Iwo Jima with the Marines, and her nephew served in Iraq. "I wrote some poetry and a script that I had to retrieve from an old computer," she says. After moving to Beacon three years ago, "it took me a while to get my nerve up, but I need some enlightenment and to be around creative people." During the three-hour session, Slattery observed as the group read, then mildly critiqued several script excerpts. Suggestions are delivered with a positive spirit; nothing gets carved up. Francis Kielbe, who had made revisions based on feedback from the previous Script Lab meeting, listened to "Version 2.0" of his screenplay about depressed monsters attending an AA-style gathering. Rob Barron, a regular who teaches theater at The City College of New York, suggested that Kielbe consider "character directions. Do you want the vampire to be like Bela Lugosi or some frat boy? What kind of zombie are you looking for?" Topher Kage, an actor, writer, Army veteran and director of experience at Savage Wonder, plays a genial and gentle host who asks writers, "What do you want to get out of this?" Most come to hear the dialogue outside of their heads. Lauren O'Brien, who created the one-woman Lolo's Boyfriend Show, is writing a TV pilot. "Early in the process, it's hard to tell what you have. Does it hit with people? Is it confusing?" she asks. "The lab helps you see what works and what doesn't work. I'm ready to feel it." O'Brien, who lives in Beacon, heard buzz about the gathering and decided to take the plunge. "I'm a sensitive artist, but we always need feedback," she says. As Kage read the opening scene at a frantic pace, O'Brien pressed play on a phone soundtrack as her alter ego darted around Manhattan, chased by a mystery man wearing expensive shoes. As much as the creators enjoy hearing people read their work, several attendees show up to bring the scripts alive. Cold and semi-cold readings notwithstanding, volunteers keep things moving. Animating one of Barron's scenes, Beacon resident Lily Cabe played a waitress with aplomb, supporting O'Brien and Ted Swindley, author of Always … Patsy Cline, who poured on the smarm as a rogue substance abuser with three ex-wives and a prison bid on his resume. Swindley also dug into his role as an air traffic controller in Kage's script, a 10-minute play presented with authentic sound effects. "I like to work the acting muscle," says Swindley, who also provides advice. Time limits for individual works are loose, but everyone gets an equitable shot depending on the work's length and merit. Kielbe's monster mash lasted four pages; others are more elaborate. "We get excellent feedback from skilled people, and I'm honored to get the attention," says O'Brien. "This vortex of creativity and sharing with others is like being close to God. I feel like I'm part of something." Script Lab is held at 6 p.m. for writers ages 21 and older on the first Wednesday of each month at Savage Wonder, 141 Main St., in Beacon. The next sessions are July 1 and Aug. 5. See dub.sh/script-lab.

The DepartureIt took us way longer than expected, but eventually Larry and I left Colorado to return home.Or at least, that was the plan. The land ownership was finally settled, all the documents were registered, officiated, finalized and everything was now in our names. Other people no longer had a footing or claim to the land or anything they had abandoned there. We had three major structures (including a vehicle) removed from the land, cutting off the negative energy cords they had anchored there.I woke up one day to find that Larry was removing water tanks, packing generators, tools and plants.Okidoki, I thought. This is it. We are leaving.A few hours later, we started the GPS and it said, 19 hours to Port Angeles. We discussed where we might stop, how many hours we would drive that day and we left. We came to a grinding stop a few yards outside of the property… OMG, we had left Chinook tied up in the shade in the sand castle! Our giant, white, hard-to-miss Maremmano-Abruzzese dog. We re-checked everything again, loaded our love bug onto the truck and set off yet again. We wanted to get north of Salt Lake City on the first day, which we did. We actually stayed at a Cabelas' carpark, and there was a bit of grass next to us. The dogs sniffed it, laid down on it and went to sleep. They had missed the grass.Everything was good, we had driven the rest of the day and had found a great place to park. The next day, we found a restaurant that opened for breakfast at 7:30am. We walked over and found it to be both beautiful and high-frequency. The food was also amazing. After breakfast, our plan was to drive all day and get to Eastern Washington. But when we got back in the car and started the map, it showed us we still had 17 hours left. How could this be? It was so confusing, we had driven a long way the previous day.We sighed and started the drive again. It is not like this is the first time we had missing time in our travels. In fact, as the journey unfolded, Larry and I started comparing notes with earlier trips and noticing some very strange patterns. We will explore those more deeply in the podcast.Again, we drove all day. We veered north. The time on the GPS looked very similar to the Oregon route. We found an amazing National Forest camping ground and after some chopping of wood, walking the dogs and dinner, we went to sleep. The next day the story repeated. Instead of the 8 hours left that the GPS had told us the previous night, we had 14!OK, this was odd, weird and strange. Larry decided to find a physical map to check our journey on. There was a large map outside an information stop in Lolo, Montana. Yup, you guessed it. We still had 14 hours left to get home. At that point we stopped trying to make sense of it and simply kept driving. We can discard it all with bad planning or failing GPS directions. But this became even stranger. When we left Lolo, the GPS said to go north to Moscow and Coeur d'Alene. I was a bit confused by this, but we followed the instructions. As I was looking at the gps trying to figure out how far we were so we could stop for food there, I looked up and saw a notice saying “Welcome to Washington”. And, as I pointed it out to Larry asking him when we had stopped going north (he said we had not), I looked down to the map and saw our dot move from the road north, to one going west. Not only that, but it was well within Washington.Hmm, OK, we thought. And looked around us. Endless green fields stretched to the horizon. Strong grasses rolled in the wind like waves on an ocean. Here and there sat seriously beautiful farmhouse compounds surrounded by trees, barns and silence. It felt less like driving through a place and more like moving through a painting.Again, we drove all day. Nothing changed. The fields seemed to go forever. It does not take all day to drive across Washington State. Yet, at the end of the day, just as the green fields turned to desert, we found a campground in Wanapum Recreation Area. Yes, Still eastern washington. The next day we did manage to get close to home! You got it. We drove all day and managed to get past Port Angeles, where we camped for the evening in our shared land, Fossil Beach, where our friends were waiting. When we finally did get home, the next day, we felt very different from when we had left, different from who we had been in Colorado, and different again from who we had been on the road home. The locations themselves no longer seemed important. It was like we had never left home at all. Or more like all of it was home.Which makes me wonder. Bilbo eventually returned to the Shire. So did we. But whether either of us ever truly left home, the road, or the destination is another question entirely. And no, we didn't bring home a ring to rule them all, but we did bring a truck full of quartz crystals. On this week's Wisdom Keepers Hour, we will share photographs, videos, and reflections from the journey home. Our panelists will also compare their own return journeys and help us explore a question we still cannot fully answer:How do you drive for days and somehow remain inside the same stretch of road? The discussion doesn't stop here - listen to the full podcast episode for unfiltered insights from Inelia and our panelists. This is a special bonus episode as we say goodbye to our incredible friend and co creator of the show Danny Canete #8834. I wanted Danny, and the listeners to get to hear what some of the many people said about getting to work with Danny and share this wild life and career at Dallas PD. I am a big believer in that your reputation isn't what you think of yourself but what others think of you and how you impacted their life. There are so many stories, so many laughs, tears, and incredible moments that make up a twenty year career. Love you buddy, take care of yourself and that beautiful family. Below is just one of the many unique stories and inside peeks inside Danny's family and life. Dan Canete was born and raised in the Philippines. Dan had lived on the island of Leyte during WWII. He had experienced Japanese Zeros and guerrilla warfare in the jungles and MacArthur landing on the island. He married Evelyn Senit and had a son, Allen. He immigrated (legally) from the Philippines to the US with their four year old son, Allen, in 1963. Four years later their daughter Lisa was born. They lived on both coasts pursuing advanced education for Dan. He earned his doctorate in psychology and became a college professor. Later in life he liked to be called "Doc Dan". Along many other talents he was a musician. He loved the USA and all it gave to him and his family. In their retired years they finally settled in Corpus Christi, Texas where a strong community of Filipino families lived and churched Allen married Kim. Their first child was a son. They named him after both his grandfathers, Daniel James. He has always been known as Danny. Danny's grandmother, Evelyn, died in 2019. His grandfather, Daniel, called Lolo by his family, decided to remain in his home in Corpus Christi. In 2020 the US suffered not only the onslaught of Covid but also the George Floyd riots. As a Senior Corporal with Dallas SWAT, Danny and his team had been running for days and weeks through the city of Dallas protecting the city from the riots. On June 14 Lolo called the ambulance because he was not feeling well. He died of Covid June 17. As soon as he learned his father was sick Allen had booked flights and was headed to Texas from South Dakota. Lolo died before he could get there. Allen continued down to Corpus Christi to take care of immediate needs. He spent Father's Day writing his dad's obituary. On July 25, 2020 Hurricane Hanna (Danny's daughter is named Hannah) swept through Corpus Christi. Allen and Kim had driven down to Dallas. Allen's sister, Lisa, and her life partner, Scott, had left their Manhattan apartment for the first time since Covid hit and flew into Dallas. In Dallas Danny joined his mom and dad and aunt and uncle. They all drove down to Corpus Christi on July 26 to close up and put Lolo's house up for sale. They drove through a torrential rainstorm. Once in Corpus Christi they all checked into a hotel then they all piled into one car and headed over to Lolo's house. Allen had gotten into the house in June. But, they were unsure if the garage could be opened. As Allen and Scott messed with the garage door Danny jumped out of the car and walked up to the front. Kim thought he was going to try the front door. But, no. Lolo had a tall flagpole where he had displayed his American flag. The flag was in a wet heap on the ground. Danny went over to pick it up. So much came together in that moment. The immigrant grandfather, so patriotic, and so very proud of his grandson, dies of Covid. The namesake grandson stepping back from policing riots of people spewing hate for the USA to say good-bye and give his grandfather and his country the respect they deserved.
Hi! It's been a while. How's your mom? We missed you so much. We'll be doing episodes every 1-2 months because we are both busy opening restaurants and taking naps. Thank you so much for listening. Kottu is everywhere this summer. Bar Dojo Seattle opening soon. Be kind to each other.

Joe Lavelle came through for us in style, as he helped us put together a playlist befitting our current situation, with songs that question and resist an uncertain future, and songs that value humanity over machinery. We deserve a voice in whether or not this "world-changing" technology is all they say it is, and by "they", we mean the people with the money. For a hundred reasons, we're against it, and we have the songs to back us up.If you missed Part 1, start here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-717-top-ten-songs-against-a-i-part-1-w-joe-lavelle/id573735994?i=1000762382186Do yourself a favor and take in the official Top Ten Songs Against A.I. playlist, featuring every song heard in Parts 1 & 2:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3FQjX5zA7X9QCPCQsaexFm?si=bab9644a12b3440cWe've lowered our prices, but not our standards over at the ATTT Patreon! As a bilingual artist, Lolo Zouaï uses both English and French on her new album Reverie. Sometimes it's because the meaning of a word in one language is more precise for the song, while other times the sound of the word fits the melody better. We take a deep dive into Zouaï's songwriting process and discuss why she's not good at late-night writing sessions, why the bathroom is a great place to get rid of writer's block, and why she's much more productive when working on many things at once.
À demain avec Lolo !--MES STAGES EN COLLECTIF

"For me, it's just like I write the song so that I could get it off my chest, and I think it's the coolest thing in the world." LØLØ stops by the club to discuss her jump to Hopeless Records, the power of hyper-specific lyrics, and double standards for women in pop-punk. Canadian artist LØLØ joins Brian and Lizzie to talk about her upcoming album, god forbid a girl spits out her feelings! She explains why treating her songwriting like a personal diary actually helps fans connect more deeply, rather than alienating them, and what it was like making the move to a new label. The conversation also tackles the reality of being a woman in the alternative scene. LØLØ breaks down the double standard of women getting criticized for writing 'I hate this man' tracks, while male pop-punk artists have built entire careers on the exact same premise. Plus, Brian and Lizzie debate whether Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography era actually qualifies as an underrated scene record. "For me, it's just like I write the song so that I could get it off my chest, and I think it's the coolest thing in the world." "I feel like a lot of women are writing that kind of song, honestly. And I see a lot of people commenting like, oh, like, imagine a guy wrote this about a girl." "That kind of stuff is important as an escape when there is so much going on in the world." JOIN THE CLUB!
