Welcome to another episode of Delta Waterfowl's The Voice of the Duck Hunter. In October of 2015, Kansas City firefighters John Mesh and Larry Leggio lost their lives in the line of duty while battling an arson fire. A wall collapse claimed both men—an unimaginable loss felt deeply by their families, their fellow firefighters, and their community.John Mesh grew up in a family of eight brothers and sisters, raised with a deep respect for the outdoors and a passion for hunting and fishing. Those values shaped his life—and he was already passing them on to his four daughters. In the year following John's death, his family, friends, and fellow firefighters established the John V. Mesh Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor his life and continue the hunter recruitment efforts that meant so much to him.In this episode, I had the honor of spending time in the duck blind with Jim Mesh, John's brother, to learn more about the man behind the name—the firefighter, the duck hunter, the family man—and how his legacy continues through conservation, mentorship, and tradition. This is a story about sacrifice, purpose, and the enduring bond between the outdoors and those who cherish it.Let's welcome Jim Mesh to the podcast.Delta Waterfowl: https://deltawaterfowl.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DeltaFans/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deltawaterfowl/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DeltaWaterfowl/

KCFD firefighters John Mesh and Larry Leggio tragically died on October 12, 2015 while fighting a two-alarm blaze on Independence Avenue. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Mesh's brother Jim partnered with John's KCFD Pumper 10 colleague John Sirna to create the John V. Tragically in October 2015, Kansas City endured the loss of two courageous firemen, Larry Leggio and John Mesh. Like so many, we mourned this devastating loss with a heavy heart. In this darkness, an idea was born to support the local families left behind. With a core group of less than 10 friends, the support of The Bar and only 6 days, the “Fallen Heroes Ride” came to life. When our Facebook event page went Public we had almost 2,000 shares in 2 days. Donations started pouring in for the auction, the families, and our team was in overdrive! We all could see this ride was taking on a life of it's own. On October 25, 2015, the riders began arriving, and they just kept coming. Over 700 motorcycles and 1,300+ people came to show their support. We raised just shy of $40,000 with 100% of it going to the families through Local 42. After the dust had settled, we were truly able to see the miracles that happened over those 6 days. We are forever grateful and thankful to have been given the opportunity to make this happen. From the beginning, and throughout the process, we were asked to make this an Annual Ride. Without hesitation, we said ABSOLUTELY! Because of the magnitude of this ride, we were introduced to S.A.F.E. which aligns with our purpose and vision for the continued raising of monies to support our Fallen Heroes families and honor their sacrifice. @GailsHD @KCFallenHeroes #Firstresponders #Heroes @SHAWNEECYCLE @loganthebar @KCPolice @IAFFLocal142 #SlackerMorningShow101theFox #TMobile
