NASA knows that one of its massive satellites will crash to Earth, they’re just not sure exactly when or where. But don’t worry, NASA says the risk of harm is “low," but notably NOT ZERO. Okay, Hobbitses, it's our last journey through Middle Earth! And Bilbo's first! Dom's back, and so is Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, and… Radagast the Brown?! Although this is our only episode on the Hobbit trilogy, we're not just covering UNEXPECTED JOURNEY this week. Listen in for some cross examination of the two (troubling) sequels, the many fan edits (especially the one from Maple Films), and Guillermo Del Toro's greatest unmade production. A very special thanks from Dom to all the listeners who reached out with support during his absence. And thanks to Stephen Hilger for pinch hitting! Next week, it's Jackson's final (?) narrative film, MORTAL ENGINES (2018) from director Christian Rivera. We are thrilled to have two of the legends of the current Portland dining scene on the podcast with us, Jackie and Adam Sappington. Back in 2007, they left Wildwood to create The Country Cat, which was one of the staples of Portland's restaurant heyday. They eventually opened The Country Cat at the airport, pioneering the idea that a great local restaurant could succeed serving people coming and going from PDX in a very special way. 8 years ago, the Sappingtons bought Harlow restaurant, a plant-based restaurant. So interested that Adam, who was such a down home Ozark born country boy, would move from so much meat to a plant-based restaurant. In this interview, we talk about why they did that, personally and professionally, and what it's meant for them since. Part 2 of this interview will stream starting next week, where we will talk a little more about airport hospitaility, and then get into being parents of one of the best college footaball players in the country as a Duck at the University of Oregon, as their son Atticus readies for the NFL draft. Tim Lesmeister and Drieslein address controversial Bureau of Land Management nominee Stevan Pearce and the announcement that Rep. Ryan Zinke is not running for Congress again out in Montana. They also discuss the quiet debate over whether America should allow hunters to sell their venison. Justin Reif is a self-taught habitat manager who, through years of trial and error, has learned how to consistently attract ducks to his family farm just west of Lake Erie in Ohio. Adapting to shifting migration patterns, changing landscapes, and the realities of modern waterfowl management, Reif has refined his approach while navigating challenges ranging from unpredictable weather to competition from neighboring “corn club” operations. His pursuit of maximizing duck energy days on the farm ultimately led him to develop Create the X, a mobile app designed to help landowners and managers track the many details involved in managing waterfowl habitat. Reif also reflects on his service as an Army Paratrooper in Afghanistan and Iraq, and how those experiences shaped his perspective and deepened his commitment to improving his family's property for ducks.>>>Thanks to our sponsors: Tom Beckbe, Lile Real Estate, Perfect Limit Outdoors, Purina Pro Plan, Sitka Gear, Greenhead: The Arkansas Duck Hunting Magazine, Noah Perry-Raymond James, Waterfowl Management Academy, Create the X and Ducks Unlimited.Send a textAll Rights Reserved. Simona Supekar talks with bookseller Justin Remer about her new book in the Object Lessons series, Stock Photo. Starting with her history as a former keyworder for a stock photography company, Supekar explores the way these largely ignored components of the websites we visit shape our ideas about beauty, race, cultural heritage, and gender. She discusses the way that photo-generating AI is being trained on datasets that she helped construct. She talks about the changes in the industry in the past half-century. And, of course, she talks about all those stock photo memes. Dr Chris Brown joined The Rush Hour and shared one of the strangest vet stories you’ll ever hear. It all started with a sick duck brought into the clinic… but the real twist came a few days later when Dr Chris received a phone call from the owner of a Sydney brothel. Turns out the duck belonged to one of their top performers — and as a thank you for saving it, the owner made Dr Chris a very generous offer.... Hear the full story from Dr Chris on The Rush Hour.
Here's your first warning: Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring spoilers ahead! Patrick Horvath returns for a full spoilers breakdown of the sequel series to IDW Publishing's smash hit. Together, we consider the cartoonist's joyous relationship with beauty and horror, where Monica the Duck finds herself in the last panels of the final issue, and why we were so wrong about George the last time we spoke with Horvath. Or, were we? Sequels are a terrible, stressful thing to attempt, but we all know why they happen. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees was too damn successful to be left alone, and thankfully, Horvath, the book's shepherd, returned to his drawing table with passion and a mission for his characters. Rite of Spring is not only better than the original series, but it must also be considered as one of the best comic book sequels of all time. And it's because it might leave certain readers fur-ious (sorry, not sorry) regarding where Horvath leaves (or drags) certain characters. Patrick Horvath is not afraid to hurt his comic book kids. However, as we discuss, there is as much love and beauty in his series as there is grotesque horror. Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring is a deeply human book, and as such, it stirs profound feelings within the reader. Also, yo, another sequel is coming. What can we expect? We put that question to Horvath, too. All six issues of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Rite of Spring are out now from IDW Publishing. Since my recent conversation with Josh Goins, there's been a lot of debate about duck numbers, hunting pressure, flooded corn, and the Adaptive Harvest Management system. In this episode, I step back from the noise, dig into the actual data, and explain what I've learned. We break down how AHM works, why seasons have remained liberal despite declining mallard numbers, and what the science says about additive vs compensatory mortality. I also compare current duck populations and prairie pond conditions to long-term averages and historic drought years to put today's numbers into context. I'll also revisit my recent reel about ducks going nocturnal around flooded corn and discuss what we actually know — and don't know — about its impact on migration. Finally, I tease an upcoming Patreon-only livestream interview with Dr. Mike Brasher, Chief Scientist at Ducks Unlimited, where we'll go even deeper into habitat, harvest management, and the future of waterfowl hunting. This episode is about facts, context, and understanding — not outrage. Partners Flight Day Ammunition Premium bismuth loads built specifically for waterfowl hunters. This week, a light-hearted tale of a pitcher who braved the injury nexus in a body that just refused to flinch when under hostile fire, preceded by the story of a favorite cartoonist who pontificated on the subject of children and divorce even as he proceeded to get divorced and abandon his children. And in between, unwelcome news of war. The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?
The Duck! City was smokin' the day after the State of the Union crashed and burned, reaching a high of 72 degrees — which was 18 degrees above average. It's nice to be above average in something. But still, damn. In any event, the roses are budding and so is everything else. The primates who call this desert home may view with alarm the federal knuckles being dragged into the Colorado River Compact, which remains an insoluable dilemma to its signatories and will join the long list of issues about which His Excremency King Piggy the Sticky-Fingered knows nothing and cares even less. And Your Humble Narrator, who ordinarily yearns to toddle off to someplace toasty about this time of year, finds himself in the awkward position of grumbling about beautiful weather. At home. In February. All of which means — yes, yes, yes — it's time for a Coconut Telegraph edition of Radio Free Dogpatch. In Episode 4 of The Sixth Bureau, a series from The Big Take, we follow a spy from China’s Ministry of State Security as he tries to plan a delicate overseas meeting with a valuable source. But the person he’s talking to isn’t working alone. The Sixth Bureau from Bloomberg News follows an MSS intelligence officer whose mission was to acquire the crown jewels of American aerospace companies. With aliases, blackmail and the occasional break-in, he targeted corporate giants. That is, until his sloppiness — and a cunning FBI sting — led to a stunning reversal: Xu Yanjun became the first Chinese intelligence officer ever convicted on American soil. The Sixth Bureau is the story of superpowers, their secrets and how one Chinese spy got caught. Listen to Episodes 1 - 3 here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week Joey and Cal are dreaming up the things they would change if we were solely focused on bird production and hunting success across the United States and Canada. We discuss the changes the EPA has made in rollbacks to the Clean Water Act and how it might affect bird populations and hunting. If we keep letting little things like this go, eventually there might not be duck hunting. Carter cooks up a new game for us to play called What the Duck and you're going to want to watch that section on our podcast YouTube channel if you plan on playing along. We're talking real issues: wetland loss, drought, public land pressure, educated birds, and why success has to be earned right now. No influencer finger-pointing. No excuses. Just what I'm seeing, what I'm hearing, and what it means for hunters going into the next season. We also hit:Why some guys struggled this season (and why others didn't)Blue-wing teal numbers and what that means for seasonsPintail limit changes and how that plays out in real huntsWhy habitat matters more than any internet argumentThe reality of YouTube cracking down on shotgun/ammo contentRecipes, off-season plans, and what's next for Duck GunIf you've had a weird season, if public land feels packed, or if you're worried about the future of waterfowl hunting—this one's for you.
In this episode, James and Ryan Dulaney, manager of Grindle Slough in Arkansas, take a deep dive into the current state of waterfowl management, covering habitat conditions, duck populations, and how weather influences migration patterns. They discuss practical strategies for managing duck ground, including vegetation management, soil disturbance, water management, and the timing of flooding. James and Ryan also highlight the importance of managing hunting pressure, fostering cooperation among neighboring landowners, and shifting mindsets toward long-term stewardship and consistent management to support sustainable waterfowl hunting.
Philip Tappan has spent the past four and a half years serving on the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission and now chairs the Rules & Regulations Committee at the AGFC. With the Commission's proposed changes for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 seasons now on the table, from expanded non-motorized walk-in areas on WMAs to another proposed 60-day, six-duck framework, the conversation around the future of Arkansas duck hunting is still buzzing despite the season ending. In this episode, the guys take a measured look at what's being proposed, unpack the philosophy behind the decisions and wrestle with a familiar topic of balancing opportunity with what is best for the resource. As always, it's a candid conversation rooted in respect for the resource, the tradition and the responsibility we all share as Arkansas waterfowlers.Send a textAll Rights Reserved. KOSMIC! Novelist, comics writer, and historian Stuart Moore joins the podcast to discuss his new book for the Marvel Age of Comics critical series from Bloomsbury and Marvel, Doctor Strange: A Decade of Dark Magic. As the title promises, Moore's book looks at the first ten years of the character - from its start as a supporting feature in Strange Tales from artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee through multiple reimaginings and adjustments in the hands of writers and artists like Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, and Steve Englehart. In this discussion with bookseller Justin Remer, Moore talks about the dialogue Doctor Strange created with the '60s counterculture, the tumultuous publishing history of the title, and his own prior interactions with the late Ditko and Lee. If you stick around, there's some Toxic Avenger talk near the end as well. Pick up a copy of the book at Skylight or order the audiobook version from Libro.fm. Hosted and produced by Justin Remer. Recorded remotely via Zencastr. Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental)" by Duck the Piano Wire. Closing music: "Rule of 3s (Solemnity Child)" by Elastic No-No Band.
