When we discuss topics related to our government, we often ask ourselves, what would Sharon say? We decided to ask Sharon McMahon,, America's favorite government teacher,  to help us understand why teaching students about how the US Government works has been defunded and de-prioritized. Sharon shares her insights on the reality that many students graduate without a proper understanding of how their government operates, often having only a single semester of civics education. We discuss the dangerous consequences of this knowledge gap, not just for individual citizens, but also as a national security threat and a threat to our democracy. How can we make America great again when we don't know how it works? Journalist Garrett Graff is sounding increasingly urgent alarms about America's slide into authoritarianism.He said that what is happening under the Trump administration is not a constitutional crisis, which “normally means that there's some sort of tension in the system, disagreements between the two branches.” Instead, he insisted that the tension is absent because “what we are seeing is a Congress that is willingly abdicating many of its constitutional and statutory authorities to the President.”What is happening now is “a constitutional crash. And I mean that in the medical sense, where we are seeing the unwinding of our constitutional system writ large, and sort of a collective failure of checks and balances across the board.”“Checks and balances only work if Congress actually cares,” Graff continued. “And what we're seeing right now is Congress just not caring what the President does... They seem unwilling to stand up for both their traditional role and also their own personal power in Washington, lest it basically anger Donald Trump's hoards of supporters and turns MAGA against them.”Garrett Graff, a former editor of Politico and Washingtonian magazines, is a frequent guest on television news shows and a regular contributor to the op-ed pages of the New York Times and Washington Post. His oral history of the 2008 financial crisis, “The Weekend That Shook The World,” was published this week in the Washington Post op-ed section.“I think the 2008 financial crisis is a moment that we have not fully reckoned with in terms of how it shaped and changed the trajectory of our country,” noted Graff. “It caused an enormous loss of faith in the system and in institutions among voters and Americans. It launched the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party, which we have seen go in the years since from the fringe to the mainstream of the party.”“The fact that there were no Wall Street executives who were publicly held to account in criminal prosecution — basically that there were no CEOs who were perp walked on TV — caused a lot of people to rightly feel that the system was not working for them, that basically the powerful were being protected and they were being made to pay the price as ordinary mortgage holders or shareholders across the country. It also a big part of the rise of Donald Trump, who, in the wake of the financial crisis, begins his regular commentary for Fox News as this businessman and entrepreneur, and begins the way that he moves to the center of gravity in the Republican Party.”Graff was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his 2022 history of Watergate. He is the author of numerous books about history and national security, including “When the Sea Came Alive: An Oral History of D-Day,” “The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9-11,” and “UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government's Search for Alien Life Here ― and Out There,”Graff also shares his writing about current politics in his online newsletter, Doomsday Scenario. Recently, Graff, who lives in Burlington, turned his lens closer to home. He is the editor of a new book from the Vermont Historical Society, “Life Became Very Blurry: An Oral History of COVID-19 in Vermont.” (Disclosure: VTDigger reporter Erin Petenko was interviewed for “Life Became Very Blurry.”Graff wrote that “it's possible that Covid will prove as transformational a moment for the (Vermont) population and culture as the back-to-the-land movement of the 1960s and 1970s.”He predicted that the “national revolution around remote work” will benefit Vermont in the long term" and bring "a new generation of Vermonters to the state who can make successful careers here.”Graff notes that nationally, the pandemic gave rise to nostalgia that has fueled Trump's promise to return the country to a mythical past, even to a time when the U.S. was ruled by a king."Right now, hour by hour, we are watching the court cases play out about whether the President can rendition people without criminal records to torture gulags in El Salvador and then declare them beyond the reach of US courts for any sort of due process whatsoever. It does not take a law degree to note that that is one of the most fundamentally unconstitutional sentences I could have possibly uttered, and goes against sort of every American tradition in the legal process and due process in our 250 year history. It sounds much more like something King George III was doing to the colonists when they declared independence than anything that we have seen a US president do ever since."Are we on the road to authoritarianism?"I think we are in a moment where we are trying to answer that question anew almost every single day."

Then, San Diego County supervisors vote on whether to extend the budget deadline amid uncertainties around federal funding. Plus, a local Head Start preschool is already feeling the impact of those cuts.

Chief Justice John Roberts halted a deadline for the Trump administration to return a Maryland man mistakenly deported to El Salvador, following a legal dispute over judicial authority and administrative errors in deportation procedures. European leaders have had cause to rethink their roles within Nato recently, in light of statements coming from the US Government. The Trump administration's dealings with Russia to try and broker a peace deal in Ukraine, have called into question America's support for the alliance. But whilst the Trump administration say they are not pulling out of Nato and remain committed to the defence partnership with Europe, they have warned that they will "no longer tolerate an imbalanced relationship which encourages dependency". Nato currently asks member states to spend at least 2% on defence, but US President Donald Trump has consistently told European allies to spend much more than that target.

In its first two months, the Trump administration has not only laid off thousands of federal workers and shuttered agencies, but it has also purged taxpayer-funded data sets from a swathe of government websites, including data on crime, sexual orientation, gender, education, climate, and global development. Last week I alluded to Malheur—a French word which translates as “misfortune”—having a kind of name-place irony, back in 2016. It was national news. Maybe you recall?But, before I go further I want to take a moment to say that telling this story makes me a bit uncomfortable. On the surface it has little to do with the sound of Malheur, with music, with a connection to nature. And, because it involves the US Government, it has political overtones. Birds aren't political, right? Why dredge it all up? Aren't we all overburdened with current events as it is?Literally speaking, birds are not political. But, birds have symbolic resonance. “Hawks” want war, “doves” seek peace. Consider the phrase “canary in the coal mine”. What does it mean, exactly? It's a metaphor that relies on the sensitivity of birds to detect danger. Canaries are more sensitive to toxic air than humans. Sometimes stories from the past can help bring the present into focus. Posting about politics just seems exhausting and unproductive, right? It's usually just preaching to the choir in an echo chamber. Meanwhile, reading political articles often just leads to feeling a pit in one's stomach. I know I'm not alone, and I know it happens across political divides. While I do feel timid, learning about the history of the landscapes I visit makes me to feel more connected to them, and gives me a little courage to bring up uncomfortable, but worthwhile topics. The Malheur Wildlife Refuge OccupationIn January of 2016, a far-right militia led by Ammon Bundy, averaging maybe a two to three dozen in number, occupied the Malheur Wildlife Refuge. Their demands? That the Federal Government cede ownership of refuge lands to “the people of Harney County”, and for ranchers to be allowed to graze their cattle as they see fit, unencumbered by federal permits. It was a stunning move, coupled with unusual imagery: video clips of AR rifle-toting men shuffling around in cowboy hats and winter coats, speaking in soft voices. Their enemy, the federal government, was an off-camera abstraction, seemingly immutable as the snow-covered landscape. It was a strange spectacle. The backstory for this flashpoint goes back many years, involving episodic tensions over federal land use in the western US. The reason it played out at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge seems like, well, bad luck—misfortune. The spark was the re-sentencing of two local ranchers, the Hammonds (father and son) to serve out the remainder of a minimum five year prison term for a conviction of arson. (An exhaustive Wikipedia entry on the arson cases does not paint a sympathetic portrait of the Hammonds' actions.) A small protest rally for the Hammonds in nearby Burns, OR in December 2015 was co-opted by Bundy and others—who all lived out of state—when they attempted to galvanize resentments, and escalate the protest. This took shape as the occupation of the nearby Malheur Wildlife Refuge, which lasted for 41 daysIn the aftermath, one occupier, LaVoy Finicum, was shot dead in a climactic altercation with FBI and law enforcement. The federal government tallied over six million dollars in costs for repair and restoration to the refuge facilities, while state and county agencies attributed over three million dollars in costs related to the dust-up. The vast majority of county residents, and the Hammonds themselves, did not approve of the occupation. In a surprise legal conclusion, Ammon Bundy and six other occupiers were acquitted of conspiracy to impede federal officers, the charge the government brought in the wake of the ordeal. The verdict seemed to be chalked up to: 1) A thin presentation with scant evidence meeting the specific requirements of the charge, and 2) far-reaching defense arguments, including revelations FBI informants may have overstepped with behaviors that smacked of entrapment. Together this appeared to sow reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors.The verdict was a bitter pill for most people following the story to swallow. How is it possible that a small number of people could take over a wildlife refuge—involving breaking and entering, aggravated trespass, and trespass with a firearm—for well over a month and face no consequences? Some observers see a loose connection between Malheur and the January 6th attack on the US Capitol. Malheur was arguably a precursor, emboldening extremist groups by reinforcing the idea of taking over government property as a viable form of protest.In this way the president's broad pardons given to over 1200 individuals convicted for their involvement in the 2021 Capitol riot does not bode well.So…?So where does that leave us today? Well, for starters, Malheur Wildlife Refuge (and the nearby Steens Mountains, and Alvord Desert) are wild, beautiful, wide open places. If that sounds interesting, consider making the trip! You'll be happy you did!But what else is it about the 2016 Malheur occupation that seems uncannily similar to right now? Is there a canary in a coal mine here?Let's think…A small number of people…taking over government buildings…wielding power like self-righteous vigilantes…with a disdain for bureaucracy…a hostility toward government oversight…a belief in private control over public resources…a belief that their actions represent the will of the people, when it's far from clear that they do. Sound familiar?I have an answer in mind and maybe you do too. But, I don't want to dignify the annoyingly-named entity by mentioning it here.Any conclusions one can draw from the Malheur occupation are blurry, unsatisfying, and when tallied up in a ledger, offer more losses than gains. From a more detached point of view—perhaps closer to that of a migratory bird—all that remains when you subtract out the egos, the surprise plot twists, the courtroom dramas, the short-sightedness, the logic and the absurdity of it all, is the wordless landscape. The habitat.Is the habitat more or less functional? Water, food, shelter—is it easier or harder to come by? For some, or for all?Habitats like Malheur can appear simple at a glance. Wet basin, scrubby uplands, big sky. Boring. But if you bear witness to the land, if you just listen to it in the spring, you can hear it. It's complex. It's structural. The sound has order. The wildlife voices fit together, they make room for one another. I would go so far as to say it's musical. It's a complexity forged over time. Next, Professor Kocher steps back to assess the insane legal “strategy” grounding Trump's agenda, with his blantant push for chaos allowing for his regime to carry out astonishingly inhumane actions amid countless injuctions and court orders, and why Judge Boasberg's push to get attourney's to sign onto their arguments might create some liability moving forward. After expanding on the regime's obvious misrepresentation of who they are deporting, Austin, Sam, and Emma walk through the various layers of protection offered to immigrants in the US right now, including preemptive legal action, and knowing your rights, before wrapping up the interview by assessing exactly how absurd Trump's claim of an “invasion” truly is. European leaders have had cause to rethink their roles within Nato recently, in light of statements coming from the US Government. The Trump administration's dealings with Russia to try and broker a peace deal in Ukraine, have called into question America's support for the alliance. But whilst the Trump administration say they are not pulling out of Nato and remain committed to the defence partnership with Europe, they have warned that they will ‘no longer tolerate an imbalanced relationship with encourages dependency'. Nato currently asks member states to spend at least 2% on defence, but US President Donald Trump has consistently told European allies to spend much more than that target. The alliance's famous Article 5 holds that Nato members will come to the defence of an ally which comes under attack and the assumption has always been that the US would continue to be the anchoring power. But now Europe's leaders are having to consider whether they could potentially go it alone without American military aid.
