Thursday 7.17.2025 — A New Webinar: Orson Welles' Career, From Boy Wonder To Trouble Maker

Breaking Walls

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 15, 2025 1:59

Hey everyone, James Scully here, producer and host of Breaking Walls, the docu-podcast on the history of US Network Radio Broadcasting. I wanted to let you know about a new webinar I'm doing this Thursday July 17th, at 7PM on Orson Welles' early career of Orson Welles through the end of 1941. If you can't make it live this Thursday July 17th at 7PM, don't worry, I'll be emailing every person who registers a video of the webinar once it's over. Here's a link to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/orson-welles-career-part-1-from-boy-wonder-to-trouble-maker-webinar-tickets-1445315741289?aff=oddtdtcreator Some more information: Throughout the last one-hundred years of American entertainment, few people have gotten as strong a reaction as Orson Welles. A rare quadruple threat: writer, director, actor, producer, Welles found immense success on stage, in films, on television, and in radio. In fact, he took center stage in the United States on more than one occasion… and not always to a positive reaction, but always with pushing the creative envelope in mind. Welles managed to alienate the newspaper industry, the Hollywood studio system, and occasionally even the broadcasting networks, but he rarely had a door closed in his face. Welles was known to work himself to the bone, and party even harder. He had romances with some of the most famous and attractive women in the country, including Virginia Nicholson, Dolores del Rio, and Rita Hayworth. He was hailed as a genius, a charlatan, a magician, an incredible friend, an a***hole, a hard-driver, a steady worker, and a man who drank too much. Welles liked to joke that he began his career on top and spent the rest of his life working his way down. Such a strong-willed, creative person deserves an in-depth look. In Part 1: From Boy Wonder To Trouble Maker (1931-1941) we'll explore Welles' early life, through his explosion of success in the 1930s all the way to the end of 1941, complete with audio clips and highlights including: • Beginnings in Illinois and China — How they helped shape Orson • The Todd Seminary School — His first exposure to theater and Radio • Connections and Early Breaks — How his mentor Roger Hill, Thornton Wilder, Alexander Woollcott, and Katharine Cornell helped Orson get to Broadway • Orson meets John Houseman and Archibald MacLeish, and first appears on the March of Time • 1935-1937 — From the March of Time to the Columbia Workshop, and how Irvin Reis taught Orson how to create for radio • How the US Government shaped the opportunity for Orson to write, direct, and star in Les Misérables on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1937 • The Shadow Knows! — Agnes Moorehead and Orson Welles' one season on The Shadow • The birth of the Mercury Theater on the Air as First Person singular. How its success led to the most infamous night in radio in October of 1938 • Mainstream success with Campbell's Soups • Orson goes to Hollywood, and signs the greatest autonomous film contract in history at 24 • Citizen Kane — How William Randolph Hearst and RKO shaped the film • Lady Esther Presents — Orson comes back to radio in the autumn of 1941 • Pearl Harbor Day and collaborating with Norman Corwin • How Joseph Cotton introduced Orson to Rita Hayworth Afterward, I'll do a Q&A — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged! Can't attend live? Not to worry! I'll be recording the event and sending the video out to all guests who register so you can watch it later. See you (virtually) there!

Elon Musk's Grok is now working with the US government; Pentagon awards mega contracts for new ‘frontier AI' projects

xAI, the artificial intelligence company led by Elon Musk, announced new efforts Monday to get its generative AI tool, Grok, into the hands of federal government officials. In a post to X, the company announced “Grok for Government,” which it described as a suite of products aimed at U.S. government customers. FedScoop reported on the General Services Administration's interest in Grok last week. xAI disclosed two new government partnerships: a new contract with the Defense Department, which we'll get to in a moment, and that the tool was available to purchase through GSA. “This allows every federal government department, agency, or office, to purchase xAI products,” the post added. “We're hiring mission driven engineers who want to join the cause.” The new products from xAI follow the introduction of government-specific AI intelligence platforms from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. The announcement was made just days after xAI's formal apology for the chatbot's recent antisemitic outputs. Last Thursday, FedScoop reported that government coders at GSA were discussing, on GitHub, incorporating Grok into a testing sandbox associated with a yet-to-launch tool called AI.gov and GSAi, a GSA-created AI platform. Anthropic, Google and xAI will join OpenAI on the CDAO's nascent effort to partner with industry on pioneering artificial intelligence projects focused on national security applications. Under the individual contracts — each worth up to $200 million — the Pentagon will have access to some of the most advanced AI capabilities developed by the four companies, including large language models, agentic AI workflows, cloud-based infrastructure and more. Chief Digital and AI Officer Doug Matty said in a statement: “The adoption of AI is transforming the Department's ability to support our warfighters and maintain strategic advantage over our adversaries. Leveraging commercially available solutions into an integrated capabilities approach will accelerate the use of advanced AI as part of our Joint mission essential tasks in our warfighting domain as well as intelligence, business, and enterprise information systems.” OpenAI received the first contract for the effort June 17 and will create prototypes of agentic workflows for national security missions. According to CDAO, work with all four vendors will expand the Pentagon's experience with emerging AI capabilities, as well as give the companies better insights into how their technology can benefit the department. Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news August 1 is the new deadline for tariff negotiations with the US. It's an endlessly moving 'deadline' bourne out of frustration at being unable to make any meaningful deals. This week will feature a first peek at June inflation components with the selected price data due out on Thursday. Maybe before that we will get the June REINZ data. In Australia, all eyes will be on their June labour market data due on Thursday too.Later today we will get China's June export and import data to be followed later in the week with China's big monthly data dump which will include their Q2-2025 GDP result. It will be a surprise if they have to admit a variance to their official target (5.2%?).In the US it will be all about tariff-setting, interspersed with June CPI data (also likely to match what their government wants - 2.5%). Canada will also release their June inflation result, with a more credible process, and markets expect (3.0%). Japan chimes in with its version, expected to be 3.3%.In the background there will be the start of Q2 earnings results from Wall Street majors, including some big banks.Over the weekend, Canada reported something of a surprise, because their labour market strengthened in June. Not only did they generate +83,000 new jobs in the month when no gains were expected, their jobless rate dipped when it was expected to rise. Even though +70,000 of those new jobs were part-time, the +13,000 new full-time jobs was much better than the -1,000 full-time job losses expected. Even wages rose +3.2% from a year ago, although they did slip slightly from May and have remained flat since January. Given the forces being applied by their bully neighbour, it is hard to know whether this overall June result is just an anomaly or an indication of resilience. Only time will tell.Canada also released May building consent data overnight and it was also unusually strong, up at a +12% pa rate from April. From a year ago the June consent values were up +5.1% on an inflation-adjusted basis. By any standard this is very good too.In the US, the level of tariff-taxes being imposed on Americans is becoming clearer. The latest US Government accounts show them hitting US$27 bln in June, US$113 bln for the nine months to June. Tariffs are paid by the importer and become a cost that will be embedded into how those products are sold. Treasury officials anticipate further growth in tariffs collected, expecting them to reach US$300 bln in the 2025 calendar year. Those added taxes allowed the US Federal Government to report a +US$27 bln surplus in June. In June 2024 they reported a -US$71 bln deficit. In the twelve months to June, they have accumulated a -US$1.9 tln deficit, more than the -US$1.8 tln in the 2024 fiscal year. The tariff boost for June got the benefit of some seasonal shifts, Treasury officials noted. Adjusting for those, June would have shown a -US$70 bln deficit instead of the +US$27 bln surplus actually reported, they said. The weekend brought new tariff threats to Mexico and the EU of 35%. They are moving to unilateral positions because they seem hopeless at negotiating, completely misunderstanding the process.Perhaps we should note that the US dollar has fallen -11% from the Trump II January inauguration to now. In the whole of the Trump I presidency it fell a net -10%. So the decline in the value of the greenback is just getting started this time, it seems. Holding American assets by foreigners is going to involve sinking currency pressures. And it will become much more costly for American investors to buy foreign assets for the same reason. With fiscal mismanagement rife, it is hard to see this 'improving' in the next few years. And some of that uncertainty is leaking into company balance sheets. Credit rating downgrades now exceed upgrade in the listed US corporate scene, the first time that has happened since 2021. Company cash balances are shrinking - not fast yet, but that is a turn. More companies are losing investment grade status. All this goes to the heart of company valuation levels. The forward 12-month P/E ratio for the S&P 500 is 22.3, far higher than historic benchmarks. And in Japan, we should keep an eye on parliamentary elections that will be held on Sunday, July 20 for their upper house. Given the the national government of conservative Shigeru Ishiba relies on a tenuous coalition with a small religious party, this has become a referendum on Ishiba's stewardship. And China announced a +2% increase in their national state pension starting January 2025. Because we are more than six months into this year, presumably back-pay will be involved. This year's increase, the 21st in a row, comes as studies project the system is on track to run out of money in about a decade. Until 2015, the annual increases were +10% but have shrunk away sharply since as the demographic forces have turned tougher. Their pension system is expected to run out of funds in about 10 years. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.42%, unchanged from Saturday, up +10 bps for the week. The price of gold will start today at US$3,355/oz, little-changed from Saturday, but up a net +US$18/oz from a week ago.American oil prices are still just over US$68.50/bbl while the international Brent price is just over US$70.50/bbl. That is up a net +US$2 in a week. The Kiwi dollar is now at 60.1 USc, unchanged from Saturday, but down -½c from this time last week. Against the Aussie we are up +10 bps at 91.4 AUc. Against the euro we are holding at 51.4 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today still at just on 67.6, but down -30 bps for the week. The bitcoin price starts today at US$118,763, a new record high and up +1.1% from this time Saturday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest at just on +/-0.9%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

America maintains a promise to its citizens. A promise to never leave them behind and stop at nothing to return them to American soil. Over 200 Americans are wrongfully detained or taken hostage each year across the globe. The Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs is responsible for bringing them home. Ambassador Roger Carstens served as the SPEHA from 2020-2025. A West Point Graduate, Green Beret, Army Ranger, and seasoned security leader, Roger and his team brought home close to 70 Americans during his tenure; including high profile cases such as WNBA star Brittney Griner and Wall Street Journal Reporter Evan Gerskovich. Roger joined Fran Racioppi from the McCain Institute in Washington, DC for a conversation on the role of the SPEHA, why countries take Americans for leverage, and just how America negotiates with terrorists. We explore the effects of wrongful detention and hostage taking on America's national power, how families are turned completely upside down, and why only a Warrior Diplomat has the character required to make deals with America's adversaries.Roger and Fran also share the mission of Hostage US; a non-profit instrumental in supporting hostages and wrongful detainees - and their families - through captivity, return and reintegration. In this episode of The Curious Realm, host Christopher Jordan travels to Roswell, New Mexico for the 2025 Roswell UFO Festival. With tons of speakers, presentations and entertainment for all, the festival is always a hit. We will talk with presenters and authors at the conference to hear their stories, discuss their research and so much more. Our first guest is researcher and author of the Humaniverse series of books, Keith Seland. We discuss his recent excursion to Peru to examine petroglyphs. What could the messages carved in stone by ancient cultures be used for? Might petroglyphs from various cultures across the globe be connected? Our next guest is Thom Reed, UFO experiencer, founder of UFO Park and host of The Know. We have a conversation about the ways that the media misrepresents UFO cases and how his own family's incident came to be known by another name, and the facts completely confused all due to a documentary piece gone awry. How can we begin to se4t the record straight and make sure these things do not happen to other experiencers? Next we welcome Dennis Balthaser, who for years ran tours to the famed Roswell UFO crash site. We talk about the many things he saw and found while conducting tours, as well as what ultimately brought tours to and end? Are tours still around? We find out what the fate of the property access has been in recent years. In this segment we have the pleasure of being joined on air by UFO researcher, and experiencer Kathleen Marden. We talk about her many years of work with experiencers and what evidence she has found for alien abduction. How have experiencers come to process their events? And what evidence has she found in her cases that cannot be explained? We are pleased to welcome former co-director of the J Alan Hynek Center for UFO studies and current Lead Investigator for the International UFO Museum and Research Center (IUFOMRC) in Roswell, NM, where he also serves as an advisor to the Executive Director. We discuss the many years of subterfuge and misdirection by the US Government in regard to the 1947 Roswell UFO Crash. How is the case still relevant in what ways is the US Government still directing the dialogue when it comes to UFOs? Next we have the honor of sitting down for a conversation with Travis Walton and Jennifer Stein. We discuss not only Travis' experience aboard the UFO that abducted him, but the true aftermath of what occurred upon his return, and the many ways that Hollywood got his story wrong. Then we talk with film maker and MUFON Sedona Director Jenifer Strein about the documentary featuring Travis telling his real story as well as the stories of the friends that were with Travis and the Police who investigated the case. Next we welcome scientist and teacher at New Mexico Military Institute Frank Kimbler. We discuss his many years investigating the Roswell UFO crash and crash site. As well as the many pieces he has found that are now on display at the International UFO Museum and Roswell, and why this case is still important, especially when it comes to education of the next generation of scientists! Next we speak with author and researcher Joe Jordan about his work with abductees and experiencers alike in how to recognize and stop CE3 and CE4 experiences. Through invoking the name of Jesus people can halt alien species dead in their tracks and stop their abduction from happening. That is what Joe's research has led him to find…could it possibly be true? Our final guest is Joseph Buchman, former candidate for US Congress and advocate of humans apologizing to aliens. If aliens are trying to communicate with us, are we even evolved enough to realize it? Are we even evolved enough for an alien race to want to talk to us, or would we be considered primitive for our warring and unevolved ways? We explore these and many more questions. Right now our public debt is about 97% of our GDP. The last time we had a ratio that high was around World War II. A key number that economists are focused on right now is how much interest the U.S. Government is paying to manage the national debt. Right now, we're paying almost $1 trillion dollars per year in interest. That is more than we spend on the military budget and almost as much as we spend on healthcare, including Medicare and Medicaid, every year. So, in order to get an overview of how the U.S. national debt works, how the government borrows money to service the debt or even pay it back, how we've found ourselves in a place with such a high debt to GDPT ratio, and how concerned we all should be, we talk with the author of a recent piece in The Journalist's Resource titled “The national debt: How and why the US government borrows money.”

Introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R‑UT), the provision initially called for selling 2–3 million acres across 11 Western states, with up to 250 million acres labeled as “eligible” for disposal. Though the Senate parliamentarian recently struck it from the reconciliation bill, Lee plans to reintroduce it in narrower form, targeting BLM lands near growing cities. Braxton explains why this fight matters to hunters, ranchers, local communities, and anyone who cares about public access, habitat, and heritage—and what citizens can do to stop it. That's right. For those of you keeping score at home, you get two lawyers talking about UAPs all for the price of free! Ivan discusses various topics on this Episode, including the latest articles from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, and The Daily Mail, and how he felt that each, in its own way, had some serious issues from the standpoint of journalistic integrity and professionalism. He also expresses valid concerns that the articles have acted as a severe distraction from issues in ufology that should be of much greater importance. He provides some insight into his most famous client, Lue Elizondo, whether he feels Disclosure can still happen, and, if it does happen, the challenges humanity might face in the aftermath. All that plus his thoughts on what the phenomenon might be, what he considers to be the most important UAP event in modern history, and both guys discuss who would sit on their Mt. Rushmores of ufology. Curious? You should be. So tune in and find out! Once thought to be solely the stuff of science fiction, UAPs (UFOs) are very real to millions around the world. In 2021, the US Government confirmed that leaked UAP video was legitimate. Ever since, there has been an explosion of interest in the topic. Yet, we are no closer to understanding UAPs, where they come from, or who/what is behind the phenomenon. In this new series, we look to bridge the gap between the past and present by looking at some of the most important UAP sightings in history and determining whether the question of "are we alone in the universe?" might have already been answered. But the alternative to migration is that employers can grow their employees' productivity via investments in technology, Powell responded. “A big increase in productivity … would mean we don't need as many [migrant] workers,” he said. But growth by productivity takes time and effort, Powell warned: With productivity-enhancing things, they typically take longer to be implemented, and then it takes a while for the gains to be shown. I think in the case of artificial intelligence, those gains are coming, but they may take longer or be less in the beginning than expected. Key actions include: Chinese Tires (2009–2012): Imposed a three-year safeguard tariff under Section 421 of the Trade Act on car and light truck tires from China, starting at 35% (plus 4% existing duty), reducing to 30% and 25% in subsequent years. These tariffs shifted imports to other countries (e.g., Taiwan) but raised solar installation costs. Chinese Steel Products (2008–2012): Imposed AD/CVD tariffs on 22 Chinese products, including steel wire, pipes, and sheets, with duties ranging from 20–100%. It's the end of everything! Welcome back to Part 2 of our season finale featuring Dr. Charles Liu, co-host Allen Liu, and our guest archaeology expert and author, Hannah Liu, MEd. (If you haven't caught up to Part 1, we highly recommend you do before embarking on the next leg of this journey! Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts!) We pick right up where we left off, with the next question from our audience. Daniela asks, “If a black hole hits the Sun, will Earth be destroyed?” Chuck explains a few ways a black hole can mess with our day, including the fact that long before any actual collision took place, the Sun would start shedding material that would destroy us. He compares that unlikely event to the actual example of cosmic destruction we're watching in NGC 4676 – aka “The Mice” – which are two galaxies swirling together in a death spiral playing out over hundreds of millions of years. Naturally, this leads Chuck to ponder what happens when civilizations fall apart here on Earth, and Hannah brings up the collapse of the Roman Empire. As she explains, “the fall of Rome happened a lot of times, and also, no time.” From 44 BCE and the assassination of Julius Caesar, to the 476 invasion and conquest of Rome by the Germanic tribes denoted by Edward Gibbon in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, to the fact ever since nations have claimed to be the descendants or inheritors of Rome. Chuck points out the influence of Gibbon's book on Isaac Asimov's “Foundation” series, followed by a very quick romp through “Decline and Fall of America” literature including The Handmaid's Tale, A Canticle for Liebowitz, Man in the High Castle, and the zombie apocalypse tour de force, World War Z. Then it's time for another question from the audience: Michael says, “I heard that scientists brought back a dire wolf. Could they bring back dinosaurs or animals that could destroy us all?” It turns out, these resurrected animals are just gray wolves that have been engineered to have some characteristics of the extinct predator. It's still a pretty impressive feat, though, and you'll hear how they collected bits and pieces of dire wolf DNA to “resurrect them.” Allen also brings up similar modification experiments they're doing on chickens to make them more dinosaur-like. Allen points out that bioengineered germs are far more likely to cause our destruction than resurrected dinosaurs, regardless of the world envisioned in the Jurassic Park franchise. And speaking of Michael Crichton, Chuck gives us a breakdown of his sci-fi classic, The Andromeda Strain, about bacteria from space that cause a biological outbreak here on Earth. Hannah points out that historically, some of the biggest killers of human beings have been plagues. She gives us a guided tour of the bubonic plagues, from the Black Death, which may have wiped out as much as 60% of the population of Europe, to the Plague of Justinian a thousand years earlier that killed as many as 100 million people, while also name dropping the Antonine Plague and the Spanish Flu!) And that's it Season 4 of The LIUniverse. Stay tuned for Season 5 after the summer. The aftermath of Biden's open border policies continues to haunt America as the consequences of mass illegal immigration continue to snowball. Changing attitudes towards, net positive, productive legal migration reflects the sentiment stirred up by the surge in illegal immigration we experienced the last four years. How does this affect workforce participation and address population decline? What role does the welfare state play? How are foreign adversaries using this mess as an opportunity to establish influence operations through universities, social media, and in foreign born communities? Has something changed about the nature of illegal migrants to America? And where is an immigration reform bill in Congress to address these issues permanently?Nicholas Eberstadt is the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute where he researched demographics, economic development, and international security in the Korean peninsula and Asia. He is also a senior advisor to the National Bureau of Asian Research, a founding board member of the US Committee on Human Rights in North Korea, and has served as consultant or adviser to the US Government and international organizations. His most recent book is the Post-Pandemic Edition of Men Without Work (Templeton, 2022). His demographic work on immigration focuses on societies facing population decline and the crucial role of skilled immigrants, both of which he addresses in his Working Paper, “America's Immigration Mess: An Illustrated Guide.”Read the transcript here.Subscribe to our Substack here.
