At 12:23 p.m. on Nov. 16, a man is seen on surveillance video wearing a white shawl on his head and a brown coat. Cars whiz by as he stands on the I-80 onramp off South Van Ness, uphill from a homeless encampment. He lights what looks like a cigarette, takes a couple of drags, crouches, then hurls a burning piece of cloth about 10 feet. It lands on top of a tent. Within minutes, the entire encampment is consumed by flames. A woman and man jump out of a nearby tent and flee uphill. “Get out of there!” a woman yells repeatedly.BOOM! A large explosion, likely from a propane tank, sends burning bits of eucalyptus tree flying everywhere.

A Niagara Falls man who did 24 years in prison for arson back in the 80's was more recently linked to a series of fires in Oct 2022. Niagara Falls police have confirmed that Joseph M. Gaines, 59, has also been charged in connection with the fires. On July 6, 1944, an estimated 7,000 people, mostly women and children, gathered at the Barbour Street fairgrounds in Hartford, Connecticut to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Baily Circus. Inside the big top tent, the lion show had just ended, and the Flying Wallendas were getting ready to begin their performance when the tent caught fire, sending the large audience into a panic as the spectators and performers rushed to get to safety. The tent, which had been coated in paraffin wax, was quickly engulfed in flames and by the time the fire was put out, 139 people were dead and hundreds were badly injured. In the weeks that followed, another twenty-eight would die from their injuries. At the time, the Hartford circus fire was one of the worst fires in American history, and it remains one of the biggest tragedies in the state's history. Arsonists attacked the French high-speed rail network in the early hours of July 26, paralyzing travel to Paris from across the rest of France and Europe for some 800,000 people—including Olympic athletes heading to the grand opening ceremony of the Games on Friday evening. French officials condemned the attacks as “criminal actions,” though they said there was no sign of a direct link to the Games. A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of pushing a burning car 60 feet into a California gully, spreading flames that caused what's now become the state's largest wildfire of the year, authorities said.
