Join us as we delve into the remarkable journey of Garry Gary Beers, the bassist of the legendary Australian rock band INXS. From his early beginnings, through the meteoric rise of INXS, to his current musical endeavours with AshenMoon, Garry's story is a testament to passion, resilience, and evolution in the music industry.Early Life and Musical GenesisBorn in Manly, Sydney, Australia, Garry was introduced to the world of music during his high school years. He initially picked up the acoustic guitar and formed a band with his schoolmates. A twist of fate led him to switch to the bass guitar, a decision that would shape his entire future . The transition was serendipitous, and paved the way for him to meet Andrew Farriss. Together, they formed the band Dr. Dolphin, which eventually evolved into The Farriss Brothers, and later, the globally acclaimed INXS. INXS emerged as a powerhouse in the rock and new wave scenes of the 80s and 90s. The band's unique blend of rock, pop, and dance elements resonated with audiences worldwide. Garry's bass lines became the backbone of numerous chart-topping hits, including "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," "Never Tear Us Apart," and "Suicide Blonde." Garry also co-wrote several tracks like "Listen Like Thieves," "Don't Change," and "Perfect Strangers." The band toured relentlessly and Michael Hutchence's dynamic stage presence solidified the band's reputation, leading to sales of over 70 million albums and induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. Following Michael's tragic passing in 1997, INXS faced tumultuous times. Garry explored various musical avenues and in 89, during a hiatus from INXS, joined the group Absent Friends.Garry soonn relocated to Los Angeles, immersing himself in songwriting and production. His passion for craftsmanship led him to design and build his own line of bass guitars under the brand GGB Basses, merging his love for music with his skills in woodwork and electronics. Garry co-founded AshenMoon when he teamed up with fellow Australian vocalist Toby Rand. The band embarked on a journey to create a fresh yet nostalgically resonant sound. Their self-produced tracks, including singles like "GODTANK," "DON'T WAKE ME," and "STARGAZE," have garnered attention for their raw energy and melodic depth. The band is about to tour Australia for the very first time.Garry Gary Beers's story is a fascinating one. As a member of INXS, he played a crucial role in shaping the band's sound, which continues to influence artists across genres. His dedication to his craft, whether through performing, songwriting, or instrument design, underscores a career marked by passion and creativity. Throughout his career, Garry has also maintained a strong connection with his fans. His engaging stage presence and genuine appreciation for his audience have endeared him to music lovers everywhere. With AshenMoon, Garry continues this tradition, offering fans new music that resonates with the energy and spirit of his earlier work while exploring new artistic horizons. From the heights of global fame with INXS to the creative ventures with AshenMoon, Garry Gary Beers exemplifies the journey of a true rockstar. In the 1980s, conspiracy theories that children were becoming victims of satanic rituals began to spread like wildfire, and mistrust fueled anxieties in schools and neighborhoods across the country. This would later become known as the 'satanic panic.' Professor emeritus of sociology at Grand Valley State University Mary DeYoung explains how moral panics work, the factors that contribute to them, and the role that the fears played in prominent cases at the time. Today I am honored to introduce to you: Survivor, devoted husband, actor, podcast host of ‘The World's Mayor Experience' on YouTube, 2-time international best-selling author of the book “The Devil Inside Me”, entrepreneur and business owner, film and TV producer, talk show host, and HIV and mental health advocate, Joshua T Berglan! It's been a long time coming having Josh on the show - I met him around the time when I began my podcast and was so impressed with all he was doing. We became quick friends and he was immediately an avid advocate for ‘The Imagination' and has been instrumental in helping me get this podcast off the ground. Almost 2 years ago, ‘The Imagination' was terminated off YouTube and Josh was the first person to extend an open arm to helping me get my content out on another platform. On top of helping me with the podcast, he also has quite the story, background and accolades that I am really thrilled to get to share with all of you today. Josh's story takes us through a maze of abuse, sex and drug addiction, jail, bankruptcy, divorce, homlessness, losing his children, and almost losing his life… It is the ultimate story of redemption, true love and in taking the pain he suffered for so long and turning it into an important purpose that now serves as being a voice for the voiceless. Josh's memoir, “The Devil Inside Me” is a phenomenal first-hand account of overcoming what was meant to destroy him and his podcast, “The World's Mayor Experience” - that I encourage all of you to go subscribe to which features a plethora of amazing guests and topics focused around bringing awareness to HIV, mental health, healing, and so much more. He's founded multiple businesses and has an innate passion for helping impart media literacy to the youth, and lends his voice and resources to support individuals and survivors battling mental illnesses, HIV, challenges related to sexual identity, trauma from abuse, and the many systemic injustices that plague our society. Josh's story is a testament to what happens when we decide to slay the devil inside of us and what is possible on the other side of pain and trauma. His beautiful wife, Jessica Linn is a hero in his story and also serves as a reminder of the power of love. I'm so excited for you all to meet Josh today and hope you go in the show notes and follow him on all social media platforms!CONNECT WITH JOSH: Twitter: The World's Mayor Experience (@MayorsMedia) / X (twitter.com)Purchase 'The Devil Inside Me': The Devil Inside Me by Berglan, Joshua T. In today's episode, we are finally tackling the film Roger Ebert called “a raw and painful experience” that “transcends the genre of terror, horror, and the supernatural.” We are, of course, talking about William Friedkin's The Exorcist (1973). Based on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name, the film is an acknowledged classic trafficking in body horror and demonic possession, scenes of which have morphed into head turning, pea-soup laced pop culture shorthand. But is there more to this story than meets the eye? We're breaking it all down today with spoilers so stay tuned. References/Mentioned in this Episode Clover, Carol J. By the time INXS released their sixth album, 1987's Kick, the band were perched on the edge of international superstardom, a gig that the late Michael Hutchence seemed born for. Kick turned out to be their biggest success, but it was rejected at first by their US label. It may not have come out at all if it weren't for a devilishly clever plan put into place by their wily manager. Dig in to the story of how this album overcame a major hurdle and made this band of brothers and friends into one of the biggest acts of the late 1980's, in this episode of Behind The Song. Do you think you could turn your own father in to the police? What if I told you that you found out that he had abused children? Could you then? Would it make a difference if one of those children was your own sister, and others were children at the church where your father was the preacher? That's the dilemma today's guest faced And it changed the course of his life. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 5. Our book this week is The Devil Inside and our guest is author and pastor Jimmy Hinton. Everyone wants a father they can look up to. A father who shows them love and teaches them right from wrong. Jimmy Hinton had a dad like that. He also had a dad who molested dozens of children. It's hard to imagine one man had these two sides to him. Jimmy consults with churches who are dealing with leaders who have done things similar to what his father did. Many say, “But you don't know how much good this man has done for the church”. I love the way Jimmy responds by saying “And you don't know how much evil he's done either”. If you're a leader in your church I urge you to get this book. There's a link below so you can find it easily. I want to read a quote directly from the book that I think is a call to action we can no longer ignore. “Our kids can't afford for us to sit idly by, hoping someone else will step up to the plate to protect them. Idleness hasn't worked for generations, and it's not working now. So now is the time for Christians to act. The church's record on abuse should embarrass us. When secular researchers rightly name the church as the most dangerous place for children, it ought to spark a fight inside every one of us." Most of us are probably familiar with the first verse of Psalm 89 from the old hymn “I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord”. I have put a link below to a video of a bunch of cute kids singing it so you can remember who we are trying to protect with this episode. I want to focus on verse 14, and it seems only right to read it from the International Children's Bible translation: Your kingdom is built on what is right and fair. Love and truth are in all you do. How can we, as the church, tell others about the wonders of God's kingdom if we don't do what is right and fair? It's not right to cover for people who abuse children, or anyone else. Yet we've seen it happen again and again in Catholic and Southern Baptist churches, and it's happening elsewhere and just not getting as much media attention. It's not fair to our flock to let them think they are safe when we aren't doing all we can to make that so. But it doesn't have to be that way! I know that some of you listening are in churches that are getting it right - and I want to hear what you're doing. Unfortunately some churches are not placing as much importance on the safety of our children as we should. I want to hear from you too.
