Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Today is the eight day of the month. Tomorrow is the 13th." ~Zen Koan Skills vs. habits. Habits vs. skills. What's the difference? Bound by language, experts in behavioral science tend to struggle as they attempt to delineate the two.   MG suggests these scientists are missing the most important aspect of their relationship: How similar habits and skills are! There are many favorable reasons to regard habits and skills as nearly identical.   First, it helps to remove the predominately negative connotation that habits carry. Skills are rarely, if ever, thought of as "bad" or negative. Second, it reinforces how POSITIVE HABIT BUILDING IS THE SAME AS SKILL BUILDING. This is precisely what The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. method has taught since 2010.   When it comes to developing good habits, the same sort of desire, effort, and practice is required that skills demand. And, knowing they are nearly the same helps to highlight how ineffective "The Habit Loop" is when it comes to positive habit building. By "The four levels of competence" model, developed by Martin M. Broadwell, we can see how both habits and skill capability increases. LEVEL ONE: Unconscious Incompetence: I don't even know that tying my shoes will be helpful. LEVEL TWO: Conscious Incompetence: I've just started to learn, and I'm really struggling. LEVE THREE: Conscious Compentence: I'm much better at tying my shoes now, and it's getting easier. LEVEL FOUR:  Unconscious Compentence: The highest level: I tie my shoes without even looking or much thought! Level four is where both habits and skills share the greatest similarity and, interestingly enough, they reside in the same place in the brain!. It always takes effort and practice to develop good habits, just like it does for skills.   Enjoy the show! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. This episode highlights the beauty and challenges of learning, following Martin M. Broadwell's model and the "Four Levels of Teaching."  Though relevant to teaching, this framework becomes valuable to explore relative to learning and where, as adults, we sometimes get stuck.  The 4 levels are:1. Unconscious incompetence:  Where no one wants to be or hang out very long!2. Conscious incompetence:  Where we identify a learning need or gap in our knowledge and skills.3. Conscious competence:  Where we learn and have to try really hard to get it right!4. Unconscious competence:  Where you show up to work not remembering how you got there (meaning, it's second nature!).As a leader you can apply this model to your own learning and to the challenges your team will also face.  In this episode, I'll use SMART goals as an example of this process. To use the model effectively consider these three "seeds" of learning:Notice your thoughts when you're learning something new.  Don't judge yourself, but notice when you're saying negative things to yourself (e.g., "This is too hard," "I'm too old to learn this," "This sucks!").Feel all the feelings.  Allow them, experience them.  Feelings of awkwardness, frustration, irritation, embarrassment....they're all part of our learning journey.  Those feelings won't hurt us, we need to work through them to experience more confidence and success.Notice when it becomes easier.  Celebrate when you (or others!) learn something new.  Give yourself permission to acknowledge, recognize, reward yourself for the growth.  And for working through the challenges to mastery.Because by observing this process in yourself and with others, you'll model resilience.  And next time, it will be just a little easier!I used SMART goals as an example in this podcast, if you'd like more information check out this free resource:  https://youtu.be/WYHvaT3iIwUBe the coach everyone wants to work for!  You can: https://www.intentionaleaderscourses.com/confident-leader
