    Accidental Gods
Of Beetles' wings and Brittlestars: using Biomimicry to co-create a flourishing future with Michael Pawlyn

    Accidental Gods

What is humanity for?  What happens if we rethink not just the way we plan buildings, but our entire role as beings on a living planet?  These are the central questions driving Michael Pawlyn's third edition of the life-changing book, Biomimcry in Architecture.  Michael Pawlyn is an architect, the founding director of Exploration Architecture Ltd and is a ground-breaking pioneer, not just of biomimicry as the design foundation of architecture and the built environment, but of the ways we might redesign humanity. Before setting up his own practice, Michael was central to the team that radically re-invented horticultural architecture for the Eden Project. In 2018 he jointly initiated Architects Declare a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency which has since spread to 28 countries with over 8,000 companies signed up to a declaration of action. In addition to his architectural work he advises companies and governments on how to make the shift from sustainable to regenerative design. He lectures widely and his and his TED talk has been viewed over 2 million times, which gives you a sense of the scale and scope of the possibilities he opens up.  With Sarah Ichioka, he co-wrote the book 'Flourish' and we spoke to Sarah back in episode #147, but now Michael is back with the third edition of Biomimicry in Architecture, which came out on 1st September, and my goodness, this book has the capacity to change our world.  If every key decision-maker on the planet had a copy of this book, and was given time to read it, our world would be a different place, because over and over again, Michael shows the ways that the natural world has designed things that are more efficient, stronger, more resilient than anything humanity has created - but that we can make things with them that the natural world has not imagined.  More than anything this book re-iterates the fact that we are an integral part of the web of life and that by using our astonishing creativity, our capacity to see the design of an abalone shell, or the way a mussel roots in the seabed, or the ways palm leaves roll up in a hurricane or any of a thousand other almost-miraculous things—and then applying them in different contexts, we can create everything from surgical drills that can bend round corners to whole tidal lagoons that create and store power and offer whole new biomes.  If we set the flourishing of all life as our goal, we can co-create miracles. As will be obvious in the conversation you're about to hear, this book lit up so many parts of my heart and my mind - there is so much we can do if we bring the best of ourselves to the table and Michael Pawlyn is one of those thought-leaders who has ranged right to the edge of what we know and what we can do and brought the results to the rest of us in a way that's intriguing, inspiring and invigorating.  Whatever else you do this year, you need to read this book. Buy it, share it, tell your friends.  This is how we change the world.  So, with that endorsement ringing in your ears... GDP Script/ Top Stories for October 4th Publish Date: October 4th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, October 4th and Happy Birthday to Jon Secada I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Central Gwinnett High teacher earns national award Gwinnett tops national mean score on SAT, but trails most metro neighbors Housing Matters: Rainbow Village breaks ground on expansion All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Central Gwinnett High teacher earns national award The Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) just gave Amanda Baker, a health science teacher at Central Gwinnett High, the Goodheart-Wilcox Outstanding Service Award—and honestly, it’s no surprise. For 11 years, Baker’s been the heart and soul of her HOSA chapter. Her chapter’s done it all—blood drives, parade floats, Stop the Bleed certifications, and sending students to Internationals in events like Biomedical Debate. STORY 2: Gwinnett tops national mean score on SAT, but trails most metro neighbors   Gwinnett County Public Schools is celebrating its Class of 2025 SAT scores for beating the national average—1003 compared to 996—but the story’s a bit more complicated. While the district outpaced the nation, it fell short of Georgia’s state average (1029) and ranked seventh among 12 Metro RESA districts. Schools like Decatur City (1181) and Forsyth County (1178) left Gwinnett in the dust. Interim Superintendent Dr. Al Taylor remains optimistic. Bright spots? GSMST (1360) and North Gwinnett (1165). But some schools, like Meadowcreek (836), are struggling. STORY 3: Housing Matters: Rainbow Village breaks ground on expansion  Big things are happening at Rainbow Village. On Sept. 29, they broke ground on a major campus expansion that’ll more than double their capacity to help homeless families—going from 30 transitional apartments to 66. Families who live there get more than just a roof over their heads. They learn how to budget, tackle debt, and save for the future. Utilities and internet? Covered. The $15 million project is 73% funded, but there’s still work to do. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: CITY OF SUGAR HILL STORY 4: Brian Snitker out as Braves' manager, will transition into advisory role After months of speculation, Brian Snitker finally made it official: he’s stepping down as Braves manager after the 2025 season. But don’t worry—he’s not going far. Starting in 2026, he’ll take on an advisory role, marking his 50th year with the organization. At 70, Snitker’s ready for a slower pace—more time with family, fewer road trips. His journey with the Braves started in 1977, thanks to Hank Aaron, who gave him his first coaching job. As the Braves prepare to find their next manager, Snitker’s legacy looms large. From consignment-store bunk beds in the minors to hoisting a championship trophy, he’s seen it all. STORY 5: Buford City Schools names District Teacher of the Year Emily Stewart, Buford Senior Academy’s media specialist, was named the 2025 District Teacher of the Year for Buford City Schools—and honestly, it’s no surprise to anyone who knows her. Stewart, who works with third through fifth graders, has turned the Media Center into something magical. It’s not just a library anymore—it’s a place where kids discover new worlds, take risks as readers, and actually *want* to read. Her Reading Challenge program? A hit. The Genre Café? Genius. Kids sampling books like they’re at a coffee shop? Who wouldn’t love that? But she doesn’t stop there. Stewart organizes school communications, helps teachers with tech, and even runs district-wide events like Books on the Bus, giving free books to families. We’ll be right back. Break 3: LILBURN DAZE STORY 6: Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful names 2025-26 Green Youth Advisory Council class Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful is kicking off another year of shaping young leaders with its Green Youth Advisory Council (GYAC) for 2025-2026. This year’s group? Twenty passionate high schoolers from 12 schools across Gwinnett County, ready to make a difference. New faces include Amari Wilson (South Gwinnett), Maansi Singh (GSMST), and Holly Spake (Brookwood), while returning members like Ananya Desai (Peachtree Ridge) and Brian Le (Brookwood) are back for more. From tackling litter to launching school programs, they’ll serve as advocates, volunteers, and innovators. Oh, and seniors? They’re eligible for a $1,000 scholarship. STORY 7: New store open at Mall of Georgia Johnston & Murphy, the classic American brand that’s been around since, well, 1850, is now open at the Mall of Georgia. You’ll find it upstairs, right across from JCPenney. Known for everything from handcrafted dress shoes to casual sneakers, polished jackets to everyday staples, Johnston & Murphy has this knack for blending timeless style with modern vibes. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a statement shoe *and* a go-to sweater in one trip. The boutique? Sleek, modern, and totally worth a visit. McMahon is a professor of history at Dartmouth College and the author of several books. Recent titles include Equality: The History of an Elusive Idea and the Divine Fury: A History of Genius book.Greg and Darrin discuss Darrin's intellectual journey and his approach to longue durée intellectual history. Darrin provides insights into his books on happiness, genius, and equality, exploring themes like the evolution of concepts over time, the intersection of words and ideas, and the roles of intellectual historians. Their conversation examines the connections between religious traditions and modern concepts, the interplay of born versus made attributes, and the historical perspectives on the concepts of happiness and genius. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Are genius, happiness, and equality born or made?41:06: Are geniuses born, or are they made? You know, can you play the guitar for 10,000 hours, à la Malcolm Gladwell, and become a Beatle? Or, you know, is there just something in you? And that turns out to be a kind of central conflict all the way back to the ancients. Same, as you say, with happiness, right? Is happiness just in our genes? We know some people are wired to just be cheery in the morning. Right? I'm not one of those people. Or does it happen to you? Right? Or can you make it? Right? Can you control your life in such a way so that you can bring about happiness? And the same with equality, right? Are we born equals? Are we made equals in political circumstance? Are we intended to be equal? This too gets tied up with debates around it, around the concept from very early on. And they never really entirely go away. So again, it's a nice way of kind of pointing out continuities, but then also marking points of departure and change. Why equality creates inequality29:37: Equality always serves, or always brings into being, new forms of inequality. That very assertion of equals then creates the space then for thinking or measuring others against that standard, and relegating to place.Intellectual history teaches us how to love49:28: Intellectual history teaches you to get inside the minds of others who see the world in radically different ways from how you do. And that is what love is all about: trying to get inside the mind of a person who sees the world differently from you, and to empathize even when you do not agree, to understand even when you do not condone. That is crucial. It is a crucial human endeavor, and I think intellectual history teaches that very well. The arc of equality isn't as straight as we think30:29: Equality leads to us, and then it's going to spread, and, you know, spill down to more and more people. It will expand and get wider. I grew up in California. I was born in 1965 with that kind of vague idea, and no one said it was going to be easy. Martin Luther King certainly knew it was not going to be easy, and yet, as you say, the arc of history bends towards justice, bends towards equality. We're gradually extending equality to wider and wider circles of people. And that's just how it will go. And I think we were deceived by our own rhetoric. And it was really a rude awakening in 2016 to wake up and realize, oh gosh, you know, it does not quite work that way. And as rude an awakening as that's been, I think it also provides an opportunity then to go back and examine a concept like equality that we thought we knew in some ways, but that really turns out to be much more complicated and fraught than I think we fully appreciated.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Longue DuréeRobert DarntonArthur Oncken LovejoyAnglo-SaxonsPlatoSubjective Well-beingJeremy BenthamThe Happiness HypothesisAge of EnlightenmentSocratesDaemonDoctor FaustusMichelangeloMichel FoucaultMemento MoriFascesTeresa BejanMartin Luther King Jr.Tall Poppy SyndromeChristopher BoehmBranko MilanovićKarl MarxJean-Jacques RousseauArthur SchopenhauerFriedrich NietzscheThomas CarlyleAugustine of HippoPresentismGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Dartmouth UniversityDarrinMcMahon.comWikipedia ProfileGuest Work:Amazon Author PageEquality: The History of an Elusive IdeaHistory and Human FlourishingDivine Fury: A History of GeniusHappiness: A HistoryEnemies of the Enlightenment: The French Counter-Enlightenment and the Making of Modernity Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Today's class is in Constitutional law, and our study case is Tina Peters. But first, let's discuss the bankers that set it all up. And Israel too. The goal is to divide up the melting pot. It is all happening again as Bibi pulls a fast one. Israel is America. The Peters case had amendments violated and ineffective representation. Our Amicus is damn good. The judge must consider the merits. Denial of procedure was intended to suppress speech. Reaching out to the President. The Ottoman's historically were pissed. The Tina Peters case shows her serious legal injury. District Court made a direct violation. Withholding bail as a punitive measure. AG contradictions exist. There will be no forgiveness in this case. Knowingly and willingly violating the law. The next steps could involve the Department of Justice. Decisions should only be made with a complete map of the law. The Colorado AG is backed up against the wall. Only two possible outcomes exist. It's a great dominatrix that can play a convincing submissive. Authenticity is on the rise. That, with truth, gives us a real voice. Let's band together and really fight for freedom's cause. Then we can all watch them fall.
