JP Nerbun's 10-year-old daughter said something on the walk to the bus that stopped him cold: "She's climbing the mountain of achievement without any purpose." That one line is the heart of this entire conversation. This special episode drops on the launch day of JP's new book The Culture Captain — a field guide for athletes learning to lead from the inside out. JP sits down with longtime friend John O'Sullivan, founder of the Changing the Game Project and co-author of Captain: The Athlete's Guide to Being an Exceptional Team Leader (with Jerry Lynch). Two books. Same subject. Written simultaneously, on opposite sides of the Atlantic. They go deep on self-awareness as the foundation of leadership, why modeling behaviors beats locker room speeches, how to have a difficult conversation before you feel ready, and what it means to lead from the bench when things aren't going your way.Whether you coach athletes, lead a team, or are still figuring out who you are as a leader — this one is for you.Chapters(00:00) Intro — JP's Daughter & Book Launch(02:30) Why John Wrote Captain(05:52) Why JP Wrote The Culture Captain(15:54) The Fable Format — Why JP Chose Lily(19:00) The Four Levels of Leadership(25:13) Surprises from Writing(31:15) The Hardest Lesson to Put Into Words(34:05) Hard Conversations as Life Skills(39:15) From Sports to the Workplace(43:48) What Had to Be Left Out(47:08) Approaching a Difficult Teammate(53:05) Coaching the Reluctant Leader(59:43) Tom Brady on Playing Where You Love People(1:01:26) Success vs. Fulfillment(1:04:00) Lead From the Bench(1:09:02) How Will You Know the Book Succeeded?(1:12:43) Why This Book Mattered MostTOC 3-2-13 Quotes | 2 Questions | 1 ResourceYour fast-track to the episode's most actionable ideas."She's climbing the mountain of achievement without any purpose."— JP Nerbun's daughter, age 10"Success is the goal, but it's not the purpose. Joe Polish sits down with Strategic Coach Founder Dan Sullivan and The CEO of CEG Worldwide John Bowen to explore the research-backed framework behind their new book, The Greater Game — a 100x blueprint that reveals why only 5.4% of Entrepreneurs are playing a completely different game than everyone else. Together they unpack the shift from Founder-dependent businesses to scalable ecosystems, the finite-vs-infinite game divide, and why AI is less a technological revolution and more a cognitive one. Here's a glance at what you'll discover in this episode: The number that reveals whether you're winning or losing the only game that matters... and why 94.6% of Entrepreneurs are optimizing a game that's already coming to an end (you've probably already done 10x without calling it that — what you do next is the whole point) Dan Sullivan's quiet observation after 52 years and 7,000+ Entrepreneurs... the exact moment a successful person stops growing isn't failure — it's something far more seductive, and almost no one catches it in themselves (the first exercise he runs at Strategic Coach is designed to show you you've already crossed the line once) Joe typed a question into AI and got back the most brutal case study in modern business history... Blockbuster, Kodak, Borders, Toys "R" Us — and the one invisible shift every company on that list missed before it was too late (this isn't a technology story — it's a thinking story) Why John Bowen started three new companies on his 70th birthday... and the dashboard he and Dan built for roughly $2,000 that a top vendor quoted them $50,000 a year to provide (his tech team called after the first meeting and said "we'll just build it and give it to you tomorrow") The four-hour version of something that used to take Dan Sullivan four weeks... and what it reveals about the only AI upgrade that actually changes your trajectory (this isn't about using AI more — it's about using it in the right direction entirely) What Joe Polish teaches Genius Youth Members that no business school has ever covered... and why writing handwritten postcards in an age of AI might be the single highest-leverage thing you do this week (the killer app of 2026 is not what anyone is selling you) If you'd like to join world-renowned Entrepreneurs at the next Genius Network Event or want to learn more about Genius Network, go to www.GeniusNetwork.com. Show Notes: The Book: The Greater Game and the 5.4% Dan and John's new book — published by Hay House and instantly a #1 Amazon bestseller — grew out of a 25-year research partnership to study what separates the highest-performing Entrepreneurs from everyone else. Their research across 7,000+ Entrepreneurs found that 94.6% are still optimizing the game they're in — while only 5.4% are architecting a completely different one. The book maps out exactly what those 5.4% are doing. The book's central premise: "Every system that got you here is optimized for a game that's coming to an end." From 10x to 100x: Dan's Framework Dan has been coaching Entrepreneurs to 10x since the 1990s — starting with an exercise where he had Clients identify when they were one-tenth of where they are today. Everyone in his program had already done 10x without labeling it that way. When he challenged a Client who said they couldn't go 10x in three years, the Client responded they could do it in 15 — and then voluntarily suggested doing it again. That's when the 100x idea crystallized. Dan's thesis: give yourself a long enough time horizon, use AI as a genuine collaborator, and constant growth becomes the natural state — not the exception. The Four Levels of The Greater Game Level 1 — Foundation for Freedom: Vision, security, and financial confidence. Getting off the couch. Level 2 — Energy for Expansion: Motivation and IP development. Dan has built an extraordinary amount of intellectual property; John and Joe have too. Level 3 — Platform / Ecosystem: Moving from Founder-dependent to a scalable system. John's own company grew 58% while writing the book — by walking the talk of this level. Level 4 — Agency: Creating markets. Courage, commitment, and building an ecosystem where you're generating the category itself. Finite vs. Infinite: What the Game Shift Really Means Finite game: competing for market share, managing dependencies, staying indispensable personally, reacting to market pressure. Business value: 3–5x EBITDA. Infinite game: designing an ecosystem, multiplying unique genius through others, engineering your own absence, redefining the market. Business value: multiples that reflect systems, not the Founder. Joe's examples (finite → infinite): Blockbuster → Netflix, Kodak → Apple, Borders → Amazon, taxi companies → Uber, Toys "R" Us → Lego. The pattern: finite players optimize the current game; infinite players keep changing what the game is. Dan's real-world example: Paul Van Dyne came to Strategic Coach planning to retire at 65. He went on to take his engineering firm from #40 to #1 nationally in nine years through M&A — and now plans to build his gourmet coffee shop inside one of his medical centers. AI as a Cognitive Revolution Dan's framing: AI isn't a technological revolution — it's a cognitive revolution. He compares its impact to the introduction of zero in mathematics, which made economics, double-entry bookkeeping, and science possible. Practical example: Dan used to need four weeks to structure a new book. With AI, the same work takes four hours. He now writes a new book every quarter. John's vibe-coding story: his Team built the entire Greater Game Dashboard for roughly $2,000–3,000 using Lovable — after being quoted $50,000/year from a top vendor. They own the code and iterate freely. Joe's counterpoint: the killer app today is being fully human — knowing how to bond, connect, and think for yourself. "Write with your hands, think with your brain." The Greater Game Dashboard John built this free interactive tool at TheGreaterGameDashboard.com to put the book's framework into action. The 15-minute assessment shows you exactly where you stand relative to peers and the 10 Greater Multipliers. The dashboard automatically calculates what your company is worth to a buyer today — and shows how each improvement raises that number. Dan calls it the greatest tool he's seen in 52 years of coaching Entrepreneurs. Monthly updates include an Entrepreneur Pulse confidence index. Useful whether you ever intend to sell or not — knowing your number changes how you invest in your business. Building Great Teams: Cast, Don't Hire Dan's principle: Strategic Coach treats itself as a theater company — with backstage and front-stage roles. They don't hire for jobs, they cast for roles. Every new hire is there to free up someone already in the company. Babs Smith built the Strategic Coach Team around Dan from the start — several Team members have now been with the company 20–30+ years. Beware the Founder-as-salesperson trap: if you're great at selling, you'll hire the wrong people — you'll confuse their excitement for the role with fit for the role. John, Joe, and Dan all find talent primarily through communities — mastermind groups, Genius Network, Strategic Coach — rather than ads. Great people seek out great people. Dan's upcoming book (Hay House): Casting Not Hiring. IP as a Strategic Asset Dan has had 82 thinking tools patented by the US Patent Bureau (none rejected), with 75 more pending. Each patent is a borrowable asset — you can borrow up to half the appraised value, creating a private intellectual property bank. Joe Polish's company operates as an ESOP — all Team members become equity owners after a vesting period, creating a true ownership culture without requiring employees to buy in upfront. Genius Youth and the Human Connection Advantage Joe's Genius Youth program focuses on skills AI can't replicate: human connection, handwritten notes, cold plunges, cooking and hospitality, ethical influence. Joe's 2026 Genius Network Annual Event — features Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler (Authors of We Are as Gods), live robots, and a mystery musician on 300M+ albums. Florence Welch sells out stadiums performing what she calls "rituals." Millions of young women describe her concerts as the closest thing to a religious experience they've ever had. And across TikTok and Instagram, a generation of women is turning to witchcraft, astrology, and alternative spirituality - not as a joke, but as a lifeline. So what's going on? Modern feminism promised women that career success, financial independence, and bodily autonomy would be enough. But for a lot of women, they weren't. And when those promises fall short, people start looking for meaning somewhere else - in ritual, symbolism, and spiritual searching. That's where this conversation starts. I'm Kristan Hawkins, and this channel is where I'm going to do the hard work: breaking down the biggest myths, unpacking the cultural lies, and digging into the questions everybody seems to be asking but nobody wants to answer. We'll go deeper into the stories behind the headlines, the ideas shaping our culture, and the beliefs that are quietly influencing the way women think about power, purpose, and fulfillment. This isn't just commentary. It's a community. So if you're here for real conversations, big questions, and deep dives that don't pull punches, follow and join me here. I'm building this space for all of us - and I'm glad you're here. 00:00 Witchcraft or Empowerment? 03:07 Pop Culture and the Occult 05:56 Freedom Without Meaning 07:36 Four Levels of Happiness Watch this episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVQINFboL0I Instagram: @KristanMercerKawkins X: @KristanHawkins Facebook: @HawkinsKristan YouTube channel: @KristanHawkinsSFLA
On today's episode of The CLS Experience we have a powerful bonus conversation with Craig Siegel diving deep into nervous system calibration, abundance, and expanding your capacity to receive. Craig breaks down the concept of “building a bigger vessel” and explains why success, money, and opportunity often challenge identity more than strategy. He shares how many people unconsciously sabotage growth because their nervous system is not calibrated to safely hold overflow, visibility, or expansion. Craig reframes manifestation as seed level work rather than obsessing over visible results, reminding listeners that desires already exist “in escrow” waiting for energetic alignment. He also unpacks the four levels of receiving, moving from blocked receiving and conditional worthiness into open receiving and ultimately embodying the belief that “I am abundance.” This episode is a powerful reminder that true transformation begins internally, and that expanding your ability to receive is both a spiritual practice and an identity shift.0:51 Why Money Changes Identity02:00 The Four Levels of Receiving03:19 Conditional Receiving Patterns05:05 Becoming AbundanceEarly Bird Tickets now available for our October live event, CLS: Formation HERE:To join our community click here.➤ To connect with Craig Siegel follow Craig on Instagram➤ Order a copy of my new book The Reinvention Formula today! ➤ Join our CLS texting community for free daily inspiration and business strategies to elevate your day, text (917) 634-3796➤ INSTAGRAM➤ FACEBOOK➤ TIKTOK➤ YOUTUBE➤ WEBSITE➤ LINKEDIN➤ X

Product consciousness shapes how your customers experience, interpret, and talk about your product. And if you are not accounting for it, you may be making product decisions based on incomplete or misleading feedback. In this episode of In Demand, Asia and Kim break down the four levels of product consciousness and why not all customer feedback should be treated equally. Asia explains how different types of users perceive friction, why some blame themselves instead of the product, and how relying on the wrong feedback can create a false sense of confidence. They walk through how to identify each type of customer, how to balance feedback across groups, and why observation often matters more than what customers say. The conversation also covers how to structure better UX research, when to incentivize interviews, and how to build a reliable feedback loop that actually improves product decisions. If you feel like something is off with your product but you're only hearing “it's great” from customers, this episode will help you understand why and what to do about it. Scripture as Mirror: The Freedom Behind ConfrontationIn 1964, Norman Rockwell painted "The Problem We All Live With" for Look magazine. It depicted 6-year-old Ruby Bridges walking to her first day of school during desegregation, escorted by headless US marshals, with a tomato splattered on the wall behind her meant to resemble blood.Rockwell received more hate mail from this image than any other in his career—not from Black Americans, but from average citizens angry that he showed something true, real, and ugly about America. It wasn't the content that made people uncomfortable. It was the confrontation. Here's what's profound about the painting: Where are you positioned as the viewer? Rockwell made you both an observer of the image and a participant in the story. It forced viewers to confront who they really were in light of the Black American story.Scripture works the same way. It's a mirror that confronts us, challenges us, and calls out our assumptions about God, the world, and ourselves. The question is: will we look intently at what we see, or will we walk away? The False Self and Fig LeavesGenesis tells us Adam and Eve were created naked and felt no shame. They lived in wholeness and vulnerability without fear of confrontation. But after eating the forbidden fruit, their eyes were opened. Genesis 3:7 says "they realized they were naked, so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves."The fig leaves are a physical symbol of a spiritual reality. When confronted, our inclination is to hide—from others, from ourselves, and from God.Our version of fig leaves today is what psychologists and theologians call the false self—the version of ourselves we project to others to hide our weakness, woundedness, and wickedness.Weakness: The parts we're insecure about—our fears, personality quirks, things we feel unconfident inWoundedness: Our embarrassing history, family of origin, traumaWickedness: Our sins, failures, willful disobedience—the anger we can't shake, the addiction we can't break free from, the pride in how we treat othersThe false self is a coping mechanism based on self-reliance rather than God's love and providence. What are you hiding behind? Your busyness? Your personality ("I'm just not wired that way")? Maybe even something good you're subtly putting before God—your family, career, health? The Four Levels of SinEarly church fathers and mothers understood how deep the false self goes. They identified four levels of sin:1. Gross Sins - Obvious wrongs most people would agree are bad: sexual immorality, deception, greed. These are easy to identify but also easy to use to make ourselves feel better. "I might have an anger problem, but at least I'm not an alcoholic."2. Conscious Sins - Things that are socially accepted but at odds with Jesus' way: How do you spend your money? What media do you consume? How do you talk about others? These confront not just our behaviors but our will and freedom.3. Unconscious Sins - Sins of motivation: doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Dysfunctional relational patterns others experience in us. You might not yell at your spouse, but do you harbor years of bitterness?4. Attachments - Good things that become bad things because of our reliance on them. Success in ministry. Career. Family relationships. If we lose these, we question who we are. A false self built on career success crumbles after retirement.Looking Intently Into the MirrorJames 1:23-25 says: "Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and after looking at himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it... will be blessed."Scripture has power to show us who we really are if we're willing to look intently. Most of us approach the Bible cognitively—asking about context, author, genre. These are good questions, but if that's where we stop, it's just a higher form of control.Try going deeper:How do I actually feel in response to what I'm reading?Where do I come alive? Where do I feel resistance? What aspects of my life are being touched? What do my reactions tell me about myself? If you don't feel resistance to anything when reading the Bible, you're probably not reading enough of it.When you feel challenged, discomforted, or exposed—that's an invitation to submit something in your soul to God. God forms us most deeply in the places where we are least like Jesus. The Gift of ConfrontationJames says whoever looks intently finds "the perfect law that gives freedom."Freedom from the false self you're killing yourself to construct. Freedom from wounds you'd rather hide than heal. Freedom from the weight of sin you'd rather manage than confess. Freedom from the fear of being found out.Remember how God responded to Adam and Eve's fig leaves? He went looking for them. He didn't wait for them to get their act together. He found them, confronted them, and even though He kicked them out of the garden, God went with them. What if that's how God is trying to call out to you today? What if the sign you're waiting for isn't behind a dream, vision, or miracle? What if it's behind confrontation? What are you hiding behind? What part of Scripture are you ignoring out of fear? What if that's exactly how God is trying to get your attention today? You don't have to cover yourself up to be seen by God. If you've given your life to Him, He's already forgiven you. The sins you're hiding, He's already paid for.Let the mirror do its work.

If you've ever told yourself, "I just need to stay calm," you've been sold a half-truth. Because elite performers don't win by being calm. They win by using emotion as data—and refusing to let it drive the steering wheel. In this masterclass conversation, I sit down with Mindset and Performance Coach Collin Henderson to unpack what actually separates average performers from elite ones: not talent… not even skill… but the ability to reduce internal interference when pressure spikes—on the first tee, on the back nine, or in the biggest moments in business. We break down Collin's "4 levels of confidence," the #1 performance killer (FOPO: fear of other people's opinions), why your brain is always trying to keep you safe (even when it sabotages you), and how to build unshakable confidence through identity, self-talk, and a repeatable process. In this episode, you'll learn: Why emotional regulation isn't "staying calm," but staying in control How to perform confidently without feeling confident Collin's 4 levels of confidence—and why most people get trapped in levels 2–3 The equation that explains choking under pressure: Talent + Skill – Internal Interference How to kill FOPO and stop playing golf (and life) like you're being judged by a panel Why identity is the true ceiling—and how to change it The simple framework to shift your "don'ts" into "do's" and stop carving failure into your nervous system Get your pencils ready and start listening. You don't have to feel great to perform great; elite performers execute through uncertainty and discomfort. Most people operate with conditional confidence, while unshakable confidence commits without needing results or validation. Talent plus skill minus internal interference determines execution probability, not talent alone. Fear of other people's opinions (FOPO) quietly sabotages performance, even though others are focused on themselves. Negative self-labels reinforce a fixed identity and set a ceiling on performance. Scripted self-talk and repeatable processes prevent the mind from freelancing under pressure. Key Quotes: "Words are the language of the brain. Emotions are the language of the body." "You don't have to feel great to perform great." "If you can't control your state, you can't control your performance." "If you want to change your psychology, use your physiology." "Talent plus skill minus internal interference equals execution probability." "You never outperform your self-image." Four Levels of Problem Solving: Leaders can empower members by identifying their current “level” of problem-solving: Level 1 (bringing a completed solution), Level 2 (proposing options), Level 3 (sharing findings/research), or Level 4 (simply asking for the answer). The “Hot Sauce” Technique: Delivering difficult correction is most effective when used as a “compliment sandwich,” where hard truths are encased in genuine love to ensure the counsel is “metabolized” rather than rejected. Facilitating Personal Revelation: Leaders should serve as a “Sherpa” or “guide on the side,” asking questions that invite the member to receive their own answers from the Spirit rather than providing them directly. Wellness Baselines: Richards emphasizes checking a member’s physical (sleep, diet, exercise) and spiritual (prayer, scripture, temple) “baselines” to address holistic needs before tackling complex emotional or behavioral issues. Heart-Led Vulnerability: To create safety, leaders should model vulnerability in sacrament meetings and classes, prioritizing personal, “heart-led” experiences over purely informational “head-led” teaching. Leadership Applications Member Empowerment: Instead of solving every problem, a leader can ask a member where they are on the 1–4 problem-solving scale, encouraging them to find and present their own solutions for the leader’s approval. Ward Council Dynamics: Councils are most effective when members “check their ego” and evaluate every proposal through “three hats”: their perspective as an individual, as a friend/neighbor, and through their specific stewardship. Joyful Ward Culture: Leaders can foster a “Church of Joy” by normalizing post-meeting interactions and using specific roles, such as “stenographers” to document the ward’s spiritual history and community connections. Most people are struggling in modern relationships, and it is not because they are broken. It is because the systems around them are. In this episode, you'll learn why roughly 65 percent of people operate from insecure attachment, why that quietly destroys energy, trust, and intimacy, and how secure attachment becomes a critical biohacking upgrade for human performance, longevity, and emotional resilience. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Adam Lane Smith, MA Psych, a leading global expert on Attachment Theory and the neurobiology of human bonding. Adam has spent over 16 years studying and working in psychology, helping individuals, couples, and families repair broken relationships, rebuild trust, and develop secure attachment. His work focuses on skill-based nervous system training rather than talk therapy alone, often creating change in months instead of years. He now runs a global coaching practice and is on a mission to bring secure attachment to one billion people worldwide. Together, Dave and Adam break down why modern dating, career pressure, and social isolation have produced a generation of adults who feel emotionally exhausted, disconnected, and stuck in survival mode. They explain how insecure attachment keeps people operating at low capacity, why bonding hormones like oxytocin and vasopressin regulate stress, sleep optimization, and emotional stability, and how broken attachment patterns sabotage metabolism, focus, and recovery. The conversation also covers AI companionship, dating apps, community collapse, and why no supplement, nootropic, fasting protocol, ketosis strategy, or carnivore diet can fully compensate for unsafe nervous systems. You'll Learn: • Why 65 percent of people struggle with modern relationships • How insecure attachment caps energy, focus, and emotional resilience • Why secure attachment matters more as you age, not less • How bonding hormones regulate stress, sleep, and recovery • Why high performers still burn out without nervous system safety • How men and women experience attachment and regulation differently • Why AI and dating apps can worsen disconnection if used poorly • How community and shared purpose rebuild secure attachment • Why supplements and nootropics cannot replace real connection • Where to start if you want stronger relationships and higher capacity Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. In this episode of The Brian Icenhower Podcast, real estate coach and author Brian Icenhower shares the proven leadership coaching techniques for goal setting that top-performing real estate leaders use to motivate and grow their agents. Drawing from Patrick Bet-David's book Your Next Five Moves, Brian introduces the Four Levels of Why — a powerful coaching framework that helps real estate agents identify their true motivations and move beyond short-term struggles toward long-term success. Using real-world examples from coaching teams and brokerages across the country, Icenhower explains how leaders can guide agents to “graduate” from one level of growth to the next — from survival, to status, to freedom, to purpose — without getting stuck or making reactive moves during challenging markets.

In this special episode, we welcome back Lindsay Whorton, President of the Holdsworth Center, to discuss her new book, A New School Leadership Architecture: A Four-Level Framework for Reimagining Roles. We dive into why the current model for school leadership is unsustainable and explore a new framework for building capacity and driving results in Texas public schools and beyond. The Holdsworth Center is a nonprofit focused on building and strengthening leaders for Texas public schools. Texas educates 10% of the nation's children, and the challenges faced there—like high teacher turnover and the increased complexity of the principal and superintendent roles—reflect national trends. Lindsay explains that we have created leadership roles that are "pretty close to impossible" for an average person. A core mistake is the assumption that if educators simply work harder and build the right skills, everything will be fine. We argue that the old model of the principal as the single "hero" responsible for the development of all 30-40 teachers must evolve. Lindsay's framework offers a way to diagnose and restructure leadership roles to create shared leadership and meaningful stepping stones for development. It's about getting clear on the different leadership jobs and how they relate, moving away from an unhelpful hierarchy and toward an ethos of sharing power. Key Takeaways: The Impossible Job: The current principal role, where one person is the primary developer for an entire staff of 30-40+ teachers, is unsustainable, especially with new teachers entering the profession with limited preparation. The Four-Level Framework: The book outlines a four-level architecture—Team Member, Team Leader, Bridge Leader, and School Leader (Principal)—each with a unique leadership mission for building capacity and delivering results . The Bridge Leader: This key middle layer is vital for coaching Team Leaders, ensuring coherence, and connecting the different levels of the school. It also creates meaningful, smaller-jump development opportunities for future principals. A Shift in Identity: Moving into new leadership roles requires not just new skills and time allocation but a fundamental shift in professional identity, often requiring leaders to "release control" and trust their colleagues. AI and the Human Core: As technology changes the future of work, cultivating the "most human" skills—like recognizing the beautiful, feeling confident, and building relational capacity—becomes even more critical in education. Why You Should Listen: If you work in education, you understand the increasing pressure on school leaders and teachers. This conversation offers a practical, thoughtful, and evidence-based way to rethink your school's operating structure, unlock the untapped leadership potential (the "stranded brilliance" we discuss) in your building, and create a system where success doesn't depend on "superheroes". We provide a blueprint for supporting your current staff while developing the next generation of resilient school leaders. Nick Jeffery and John Granger opened the Orthodox New Year with a conversation about, you guessed it, Rowling-Galbraith's Hallmarked Man. Both of them confessed that they were struggling with the most complex and carefully integrated novel in the author's oeuvre, with five different candidates for the body in the silver vault, a cast of characters for each candidate, all of them spun together with the Strike-Ellacott cum Murphy-Bijou ‘shipping madness as it unfolded. Neither of them was ready to talk about the book's structure in any detail. They chose instead to discuss the most obvious and most neglected of Rowling's Seven Shed tools, the signature writing elements she uses to craft the inspiration from her Lake springs and from her touchstone Golden Threads into the stories that fascinate her admirers around the world. That tool is her ‘Big Twist' finish, the surprise ending that shocks the reader caught in Rowling's narrative misdirection, the story clues sprinkled throughout a story to foster believing something that isn't true. Every Rowling reader knows this is what she is doing, but very few are conscious of the set-up until the narrative trap is sprung. One thing that readers can be looking for, consequently, are the ‘pushes' Rowling puts into her story to have us accept as facts that we have some reason based on textual evidence (and Tools, Springs, and Golden Threads) to think may not be true. Whence John's prediction post Running Grave that Robin was sterile. Whence Nick's theories that Charlotte was murdered and that Cormoran and Robin will forever be best mates, not husband and wife. The ‘pushes' in Hallmarked Man that John felt were positioning of a Strike-Ellacott reader for a judo move in Strike 9? There are five, three of which turn on paternity):* Per Ed Shardlow, that Murphy is not a good guy deserving of Robin's sympathy but a very bad man, in fact the man behind the gorilla mask (and if his surname has any mythological weight, the likely murderer of Castor and Pollux in Strike 10);* That “proper man,” Edward ‘Uncle Ted' Nancarrow, is Cormoran Strike's biological father consequent to an incestuous union with his much younger sister, Margaret (aka ‘Peggy,' aka ‘Leda Strike');* That Cormoran Strike is the biological father of Bijou Watkins, Esq.'s daughter, Ottolie, and that he was risibly reckless in his DNA testing for paternity;* That Jonny Rokeby was fooled by Peggy-Leda and Ted's management of his positive paternity test the way that Cormoran was hoodwinked by Bijou's sleight of hand with his negative result; and* Peggy-Leda told her older brother that she was going to tell Whittaker that Rokeby wasn't Cormoran's father, which led to her execution staged as a suicide. On to Week Three of Hallmarked Man! Next week we'll discuss Rowling's consolation tweet to Strike and Robin fans in “extreme trauma” from Strike 8's last chapter, a message that included a Cupid and Psyche painting, in addition to conversation about the importance (and difficulty!) of getting the surface story straight before diving beneath it Thank you for your support! The Quadrigal or ‘Reading at Four Levels' (John Granger, December 2021)The ‘Locked-Room Mystery' or ‘Impossible Crime' Subset of Detective Fiction (Wikipedia)Boris Akunin (Gregori Chkhartishvili) and the Erast Fandorin novels (Wikipedia)Who Killed Leda Strike? My guest today, Adam Lane Smith, has made it his life's work to get closer to helping men understand women and help us understand our own natural tendencies in relationships. Today, Adam and I talk about emotional starvation, the concept of CEO/COO between men and women, the ‘red flags' that your marriage is struggling, what men and women do to cause each other pain, and how men can lead in their relationships much more effectively. Do you ever notice how some people obsess over things, gossip about others, or recycle old ideas? Why is it that true innovators think differently? Dan Sullivan and Jeffrey Madoff break down the four levels of thinking and explain why thinking about your thinking fuels creativity, collaboration, and breakthroughs. Show Notes: Most people spend their lives fixated on things, people, or others' ideas, but true innovators think about how they think. People who think about their thinking are looking for other people who are doing the same thing. The highest level of thinking isn't competitive—it's collaborative. Two original minds create a third idea neither could alone. Nearly every meaningful innovation stems from that fourth level of thinking, where you examine how and why you think the way you do. Some of the most creative people don't even realize how they think—they just do. The moment you care more about stuff than ideas, you've lost the game. Like casting a play, the best teams are built when you assign people roles based on their unique strengths, not rigid job descriptions. If your team fears being wrong, they'll never risk being right. Defensiveness is the enemy of breakthroughs. Corporations reward conformity, but entrepreneurs win by asking, "What if we did the opposite? We're back with part 3 of my fascinating interview with Josh Forti and our special series exploring Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. In this installment we unpack powerful lessons from the book that continue to shape the way I think about business, value, and success. We focus on what it means to be a “prime mover” and discuss how producers can create meaningful change without losing their identity or purpose. Josh and I explore a variety of deep topics in this episode, from the importance of fulfilling work to navigating societal expectations around success. One of the standout moments was when we discussed Myron Golden's “four levels of value” framework, which breaks down the hierarchy of contributions—from manual labor to visionary leadership—and why each level plays a crucial role. This conversation pushed us to ask hard questions about fulfillment and whether everyone needs to be an entrepreneur to feel truly alive. Key Topics and Questions Explored: Fulfillment vs. Achievement: Can someone find deep fulfillment in roles that society views as “average” or non-entrepreneurial? The Four Levels of Value: We break down how workers, managers, communicators, and visionaries contribute to building a thriving organization. Success and Societal Criticism: How do you thrive in a world where success can often be criticized or misunderstood? Balancing Ambition and Contribution: What does it take to succeed while still giving back to your family, community, and society? The Art of Writing as a Journey: I share insights about my next book project and how it's reshaping the way I think about storytelling. If you're someone trying to balance growth with purpose, or you've ever questioned the path you're on, this episode will resonate deeply with you. It's packed with thought-provoking ideas, actionable insights, and a few personal stories you won't want to miss.
