Should we listen to the advice of people who do not walk with God? We'll discuss this and more as we dive into Psalm 1 and see the profound, life-guiding gems this psalm has to offer us! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. What did the podcast say about general structure to the Book of Psalms? Look over your own Bible; how does it format and organize the psalms to reflect some of this structure? 2. The podcast explained that the Book of Psalms is often classified as “Wisdom Literature”. How does this genre help us understand how the psalms are arranged and what they are intended to accomplish? 3. Glance over Psalm 1 again. Why do you think this psalm is presented first in this book? What does its position show us about its importance? 4. The podcast pointed out that there is a significant difference between not walking in the counsel of the wicked, versus not walking according to wicked counsel. What is this distinction and what difference does it make? How might a person be tempted to only avoid counsel that is “wicked” versus avoiding counsel given by the “wicked”? 5. Likewise, in verse 1, who are the wicked? In our own society, who are these people? Have you ever received counsel that might have seemed good, but you avoided it specifically because it came from a person who was not walking with God? 6. What does verse 1 mean by NOT “standing in the path of sinners?” If we were to go down this path, to what “end” would we be advancing towards? 7. How does the concept of “sitting in the seat of scoffers” build upon the idea of walking in the counsel of the wicked or standing in the path of sinners? What are these people scoffing at? Why would it be spiritually detrimental to listen to these kinds of people? 8. What does the blessed person do in verse 2? What is their delight? What do they love? What do they fill their mind with? 9. How does verse 3 characterize God's blessings being like a tree planted by water? If a tree thrives in a hot dry climate, what can we be sure is happening below the surface of the soil? 10. What does verse 4 say about the way of the wicked? What does it mean to blow away like chaff? What blows away? 11. In verse 5, what does it mean that the wicked will not stand in judgment? Why not? 12. According to verse 6, what does the Lord know? What does this tell us about His knowledge? Why is this important to remember when facing difficult decisions? 13. When you think about the principles of Psalm 1, do you believe them? How are they currently being reflected in your life? Are there any changes you need to make in light of this teaching? The Book of Job asks some of life's most challenging questions... and the answers it gives call us to trust the Lord. But is there any benefit to trusting Him and obeying Him? Definitely! We'll unpack some of those benefits in today's podcast on Job 42: Job's Repentance and Restoration. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast mentioned that the book of Job addresses questions like, “Why is there so much suffering in this world? What kind of power does Satan have? Can I trust God, even when I don't understand Him?” Are any of these questions ones that have you asked in the past? How have you answered them? What is the Book of Job's answers to these questions? 2. The podcast also gave the following summaries of the advice from Job's friends: Eliphaz derived his wisdom from age and experience. Bildad derived his counsel from the wisdom of crowds and the authority of what the experts say. Zophar derived his wisdom from the pursuit of righteousness. And Elihu derived his wisdom from the pursuit of passion and zeal. Does any of this advice frame your own thinking? If so, how can you move on from that way of thinking? 3. Once the Lord begins to set the record straight in Job 38, what has He said so far? How has the question of “who?” been the ultimate answer to the question of “why?” 4. What did Job's repentance consist of in verses 2, 3, and 6? Why were these statements necessary for Job to say to the Lord? Have you ever said these kinds of things to the Lord? Why or why not? 5. After Job's repentance, how does the Lord restore him? What does this teach us about the Lord's desire to bless His people? 6. Sometimes people think that bad things happen to people because they are under judgment from God. What does the Book of Job show us, instead? 7. From what you have learned from the Book of Job, how should we think of God and His plans for our life? How can you align more with this mindset? Answers to suffering are not easy or simple and today, as we look at Job 39-41, the Lord helps Job understand His wisdom and power and that even when we do not understand what God is doing, He has a wise and good plan. DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Today's passage continues the opening instructions from Job 38 that we looked at yesterday. What did we discuss regarding the importance of knowing “who” the Lord is? 2. The main focus of Job 39 is on the Lord's work in creation. What kinds of things does the Lord focus on? How does His designs in creation reflect His sovereignty? 3. When the Lord asks Job what he has to say for himself in Job 40:2, what was Job's answer? What does this show us about Job's understanding of himself in relation to God? How is this different from the people who proudly predict what they will say to God when they finally meet Him? 4. What did the podcast mention about the difficulty of knowing who the animals are in Job 40 & 41? 5. How is the “behemoth” described in chapter 40, verses 15, 19, 20, 23 and 24? What do you think this was? 6. How is the “leviathan” described in chapter 41, verses 7, 10, 13? What do you think this was? 7. The ultimate point of all these instructions about animals is that everything is under God's control and operates according to His design. How might these truths help a person who is struggling to understand why bad things happen? 8. The podcast moves on to Isaiah 45:20-24. According to the podcast, how does this passage help us understand God's wisdom and His ways? What will all people one day say about Him? 9. As we wrap up today's study, we saw that Job repented of his irreverent questioning of God. Is there any such repentance needed in your own life? One of life's most universal questions is "Why?" That's the question Job was asking all along, but today we find out that the question he really should have been asking was "Who? Join us for today's study in a powerful passage dealing with questions we sometimes ask.  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Although we have blitzed through the book of Job, at this point you probably have a good idea of the situation. What is going on in Job's life? 2. What kinds of answers did Job's friends offer? Why were these answers not helpful? What were they based on? How does the Lord describe their prattling in verse 2? 3. Verse 1 tells us that the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind. Think about the last time you were in a windstorm, what would any conversation have been like with all that noise? How does this help us understand that this was truly the Lord speaking and not just some vague “impression” that Job might have had? 4. The podcast points out that one of the most common words throughout this passage is the word “Who?” It occurs 13 times in verses 2, 5, 25, 36, and 37. Glance over these verses. Who is the “who” referring to? 5. How does this help us understand shifting our questions of “why?” to “who?” Why is the answer of “who” necessary to understand the answer to the question “why?” How is the answer of “who” foundational to the answers of every other question? 6. Look over these verses. What do they tell us about the Lord's power and character? How does knowing about His character help us trust Him when we still have unanswered questions? 7. What questions of “why?” are you facing now? (Or what questions of “why?” have you faced in the past?) How does knowing “who” God is, help you rest in those situations? By Job 19, Job thinks he's at death's door and yet, he has total hope in his coming Redeemer who is God. Join us for a special excursus study in one of the Key Verses in the Entire Old Testament! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. In verse 25, when Job says that he “knows” his Redeemer lives, what does this word “know” indicate about the depth of Job's certainty regarding this? Where do you think this kind of conviction comes from? How are you pursuing this kind of conviction in your own life? 2. In verse 25, what is a “redeemer”? How does Galatians 4:4-5 help us understand this concept more? 3. According to Colossians 1:13-14, what has Christ's redemption accomplished? 4. The podcast explained that the word for “redemption” in verse 25 is a specific word “ga'al” which is used when the two people (the redeemER and the redeemED) who were related to each other. What does this tell us about the nature of Jesus? How does this tie back to the Lord's promise in Genesis 3:15? 5. In verse 25, Job says that his redeemer “lives”. Given that Job was written well over 1,000 years before Christ, why is this a startling pronouncement? 6. What event is Job talking about in verse 26? What is Job saying that he believes? 7. Look up Isaiah 26:29, Ezekiel 37:12-14 and Daniel 12:2. What do these passages tell us about the resurrection? 8. According to the podcast, how is the word “see” that's used in verse 27 a different word than the word “see” that's used in verse 26? What might this difference indicate about the kind of sight we will have after the resurrection? 9. When you reflect on how early this book was written, how does this passage increase your own confidence in the certainty of these truths? Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"It costs $0.00 to become a master of habit and skill development. Understanding how to cultivate habitstrength™ is your first key." ~Grunburg Forgive the swearing! For 12-plus years, Martin has taught and preached that habit development for humans has little to do with Cue, Routine, Reward – aka the "Habit-Loop" – and much more to do with intention, action, and reflection. The "Habit Loop" concept originated after a study of rodents. Unfortunately, the well-intended "Habit-Loop" advice has proliferated all over the internet, yet it provides HUMANS with very little understanding of how to intentionally build habits. Humans possess three powerful, innate capacities: CHOICE, INTENTION, and REFLECTION. By following The Habit Factor's PARR methodology – Plan, Act, Record, and Reassess – one can easily develop habitstrength over time.  Once you understand habitstrength, you can – and should – apply PARR to develop any habits or skills that align with your most important goals! In this episode, Dr. Margaret Bauman and Jennifer Leighton share their experiences and advice, encouraging SLP's to consider potential, underlying medical conditions that may be leading to behavioral changes in individuals with CCN. Gear up for some detective work as this observant duo share compassionate tips for digging deeper, asking questions, and supporting our clients with CCN in new ways that recognize how strongly pain and illness shape behavior, and how loudly behavior communicates. A continuation of the last episode that focused on the music of The Electric Light Orchestra. In this episode we listen to the two previous bands that helped form the concept of ELO. The founders of the band came from two separate groups; Jeff Lynne was in the Birmingham band The Idle Race, which was heavily influenced by The Beatles, Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd and Ray Davies of The Kinks. They played a blend of psychedelic music mixed in with English Music Hall styles and whimsical pop. Roy Wood and Bev Bevan came from the successful mid to late 60's English pop band The Move. They played straightforward rock n' roll until they fell under the influence of the flower power movement and produced some great psychedelic pop music. Ultimately Jeff Lynne was asked to join The Move and e and Roy Wood conceptualized doing music that had pop melodies blending in with orchestral music in the same manner The Beatles did on "Sgt. Pepper". The concept of ELO was born but the two bands they came from had their own unique identities and sounds. This episode presents a sample of their musical output back in the 1960's. In this week's Fast Five podcast, sponsored by Microsoft, the A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Takeoff, and Sezzle, Chris Walton and Anne Mezzenga: - Had a split opinion on Publix's new nano-fulfillment partnership with Instacart. - Both extolled the virtues of the one-stop shop and H-E-B's newest store concept down in Texas. - Praised Verizon for going all-in on 24/7 pickup lockers. - Tipped our caps to Target for once again getting omnichannel retail tech right, as evidenced by their recent pilot of a robot that gives $8 manicures in-store. - And closed with a discussion of what Victoria's Secret selling on Amazon portends for the future and why Chris, specifically, thinks it is a pill that more mall-based retailers should just up and swallow. There's all that, plus the latest review read-a-loud, Anne's pining for 21 Jump Street, and Chris Walton's long obsession with frosted tips. Welcome to this new episode of: Light ‘Em Up!  We are now being heard in 93 countries! Thank you!On this explosive episode, we shine the “light of the truth“ on Eyewitness Mistaken Identifications. From behind the one-way mirrored glass in a dimly lit room in the precinct police station, the police detective (or line-up administrator) has just given you these instructions:“Turn to the right, turn to the left, step forward, step backward.” This is the opening scene in your personal nightmare.  You've just been identified – mistakenly – in the commission of a major felony, and arrested.  As this nightmare unfolds in front of your very own eyes, the horror continues: You go to trial, are wrongly convicted, and sentenced to life in prison for a crime you did not commit.Trust in the fact that this happens more often than a person may care to know.Mistaken identifications in a criminal justice setting are a leading factor in wrongful convictions and are the leading cause of wrongful convictions in sexual assault and robbery cases. Let's not be naïve nor be in denial about the facts – while African Americans make up only about 13% of the U.S. population, they represent a majority of innocent defendants wrongfully convicted of crimes and later exonerated.People wrongfully convicted are exonerated for a variety of reasons: Official misconduct, perjury, false forensic evidence, false confessions, etc. By far the single greatest cause of wrongful convictions nationwide is eyewitness error. An eyewitness could be 100% confident and still be 100% wrong. Two exonerees were condemned to death and their sentences were carried out.We delve into:● the definition of an “in-custody eyewitness lineup” and explore the “procedural safeguards” (that prior to 1967 did not exist) in order to protect defendants from erroneous conviction resulting from mistaken eyewitness identifications.● best-practice solutions as to how to protect suspects and defendants from the devastating and life-changing consequences of mistaken eyewitness identification. ●to educate and empower you, we have painstakingly “cleaned up” and digitally re-mastered a portion of the original oral argument from U.S. v Wade (1967), argued before the U.S. Supreme Court. The landmark decision established 5th & 6th Amendment privileges of the right against self-incrimination and the right to counsel as it pertained to in-custody eyewitness lineups. ● we've itemized the 5 step “model lineup procedure” and discuss the traditional eyewitness identification practices and problems with the process.  Would it surprise you to hear that the NYPD uses Adobe Photoshop to “doctor” its in-custody “filler” photos? In order to continue to be a voice to the voiceless – we probe this perplexing issue that the Supreme Court has been grappling with for more than half of a century. You, I, anyone can be arrested.  Jesus was arrested.  Just because you were arrested – doesn't mean you committed the crime. You've been “fingered” in a lineup, now what will you do?  Know your rights – before you're “railroaded” for a crime you didn't commit. We'd like to thank our friends at Feedspot, as recently we were honored by being ranked #10 in their most recent poll out of the 40 Best Criminal Justice Podcasts.  Visit their blog at www.Feedspot.com or simply follow this link:  Best 40 Criminal Justice Podcasts You Follow in 2022 (feedspot.com) And for all your news and current affairs check out our friends at Newsly by visiting https://newsly.me.  Use the promo code L1GHTEMUP to launch your savings.  Phil Rizzo, Executive Producer

In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to the absolutely fabulous Daphne Maxwell Reid! Ms. Reid comes on the show to discuss her fashion line, her photography books, and of course her storied acting career.  It's a fantastic conversation I know you're going to enjoy! About Daphne Maxwell Reid Everyone remembers Daphne Maxwell Reid as an iconic TV mom of the 1990s, from her three seasons as Aunt Vivian on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” And Daphne couldn't be more excited when the cast of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunited 30 years later for an unscripted reunion special that aired on HBO Max last November. These days Reid is a Renaissance woman, respected artist and designer, and education activist.  Working from her home in Virginia, and still happily married to pioneering television actor/producer/writer/director Tim Reid (“WKRP in Cincinnati,” “Frank's Place,” “Sister, Sister”), Daphne Maxwell Reid is living proof that a passion for creativity and a dedication to hard work can ensure a lifetime's worth of success. Breaking new barriers is nothing new to Reid, who decades ago became the first African-American homecoming queen at Northwestern University and shortly thereafter one of the first African-American women to appear on the cover of Glamour magazine.  But many fans of her modeling and acting career probably don't know that Reid is a lifelong shutterbug, a hobby passed down by her father that has now become a focal point of her career.  With five books and 5 annual calendars already published, Reid specializes in fine art photography that features doors and doorways from around the world, including Cuba, Venice, France, China, Germany, and Belgium.  Now she's added to her publishing resume with her first cookbook, “Grace + Soul & Motherwit,” which offers her favorite recipes spiced with personal memories and reflections from her life and travels. Reid has also been a seamstress for much of her life, creating many of her own outfits and costumes as a young actress and model, and has now developed those skills into an exclusive, custom clothing line called Daphne Style, making Chinese silk brocade jackets that are wearable works of art.  She also keeps busy as a spokesperson for Virginia State University, a historically black college/university (HBCU), doing outreach, public relations, and speaking engagements that allow her to preach the importance of education and career prep for students of color.   A thoughtful, inspiring, and fascinating professional with over five decades of experience, Daphne Maxwell Reid continues to demonstrate that mastering a new skill is always possible for an artist with a generous spirit and self-determination.   Thanks to Empire Toys for this episode of the podcast! Nostalgia is something everyone loves and Empire Toys in Keller Texas is on nostalgia overload.   With toys and action figures from the 70's, 80's, 90's, and today, Empire Toys is a one-stop-shop for a trip down memory lane and a chance to reclaim what was once yours (but likely sold at a garage sale)   Check out Empire Toys on Facebook, Instagram, or at TheEmpireToys.com The DTALKS Podcast has also been ranked #9 in the "Top 40 Detox Podcast You Must Follow in 2020" according to Feedspot.com for our work in the Cultural Detox space. Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Golf is a game of inches and the most important are the six inches between your ears." ~Arnold Palmer Much like golf, LIFE is often a game of inches. It's the "six inches" betwen our ears that we tell ourselves all sorts of stories. Stories about ourselves and the world at large. These stories tend to reveal themselves in our decisions, actions and results. At any given moment, one could be telling themselves an infinite number of stories. Yet, most of us aren't too discerning about which ones consume our attention. Almost all breakthroughs in goal achievment and personal tranformation, including habit change, begin with a new and different story. Further, the listerner is challenged to listen to which stories they 'play' habitually (on autopilot), and how those stories have impacted their life. More "tweener" episodes are on the way.
