Send us a Text Message. In this episode of History Fix, I explore the concept of "Mayanism" -  the centuries old notion that the Maya were a mystical, lost civilization with abilities, knowledge, and powers that modern humans no longer possess. And how these beliefs were started by European conquistadors who couldn't fathom that the Maya were possibly capable of their impressive accomplishments without some kind of supernatural interference, beliefs based in racist ideas that white Europeans were undeniably superior to all other races on Earth and therefore should be the most advanced. I'll explore how Mayanism led to the 2012 end of the world calendar debacle and how it still affects Maya people living in Mexico and Central America today.  www.historyfixpodcast.comSources: A Short History of podcast episode "The Maya"BBC "'Mayan Day of Apocalypse' Arrives"National Geographic "Who were the Maya? Tonight, on the season opener, I'm going to be taking a look back at the year that has followed the December 21, 2012 end of the world date. So what exactly has happened since that fateful date? Well, to make one thing clear, the Maya did not state that the world would come to an end on that date. They simply said that that date marked the end of the current Baktun, or cycle of the Mayan Long Count Calendar. We have just entered the 13th Baktun (or 14th Baktun, depending on how you look at it) and are at the precipice of a new era. This Baktun is supposed to mark a new way of thinking, a change in the way that we perceive our Earth, those on it and how we treat it. This is supposed to be a shift in our attitude, spirituality and overall, produce a new breed of man - one who thinks of Earth & environment first, treats his fellow man with respect and also promotes peace. But has this actually happened? Have we really changed our attitude completely or is this something that will take place gradually? To me it looks like the answer is obvious, to others, it is more cloudy. No matter what your feelings on the situation are, it makes for great conversation.

In a public talk in front of the Great Pyramid of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza, Berkeley Lab's Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist George Smoot discusses the remarkable precision that ancient Mayan astronomers achieved solely with the naked eye and comments on the significance of the approaching end of the current World Age of the 5,000-year-long Mayan Long-Count Calendar, due to conclude on the 2012 winter solstice. No, the end of the world is not at hand, Smoot says, but it's true that we're undergoing a fantastic transition in cosmology. The Mayan view of the universe was based on the sun and moon, a handful of planets, and a couple of thousand stars. Ours is an evolving cosmos reaching back over 13 billion years, based on a cornucopia of data accumulating almost daily and including hundreds of billions of galaxies.
