The PhilenApocalypse is back and this time cannabis comic Ngaio Bealum is here to witness it! This year Philena takes a swipe at super heroes just as their box office fortunes are starting to wane. Her first pick puts the trans in transgressive as trans femme comedian Vera Drew violates all manner of copyrights with THE PEOPLE'S JOKER (2022), a stinging satire of Batman and stand-up comedy wrapped in a surprisingly personal coming-of-age tale. It'll all make sense if you just watch it on Tubi, but not before getting your strain recs from Ngaio and Philena. And then Philena goes a little more mainstream with SKY HIGH (2005), a live-action Disney comedy about a high school for superheroes that is floating in the clouds. Philena thought this was something she dreamed up until rediscovering it recently. It does exist! The movie has one of the most loaded casts ever with Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Bruce Campbell (!), Lynda Carter (!!), Chloris Leachman (!!!), Mary Elizabeth Winstead + Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald from "The Kids in the Hall"!!! Even with Philena controlling the horizontal and the vertical, she has to endure Ngaio and Bob descending into fanboy talk as they go way too deep into Legion of Super Heroes lore for a while, but Philena was fascinated by the tragic tale of Triplicate Girl and Duo Damsel at least. For many board gamers, Spiel des Jahres is simply the little red pawn on a game box. Spotting it on a shelf often suggests that a game is worth paying attention to. That's not only true in the German-speaking board game world, but also in many other countries, including the UK. Over the years, winners such as The Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Ticket to Ride have helped establish the award as one of the most influential honours in tabletop gaming. Yet, there is a lot more to this story. According to its own history and mission statements, the annual prize was never intended to be the end goal. Instead, it was created as a tool to encourage people to play games, to promote games as a cultural asset, and to help the wider public discover the value of gathering around a table. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel dropped the first full trailer for X-Men '97 Season 2 this week, confirming a July 1 premiere on Disney+ and Apocalypse as the season's central threat. The nine-episode season picks up from the Season 1 finale with the X-Men scattered across time from ancient Egypt to the far future, while those left behind in the '90s work to bring them back, with the trailer also sneaking in a Morph-as-Deadpool shapeshifting moment for good measure. A third season is already in production. On the Doomsday front, Joe and Anthony Russo posted a series of cryptic images to Instagram with various hints and teases towards an Avengers: Doomsday reveal connected to this week's SXSW Film Festival in London; as of Tuesday morning, the hype seems to have all been for a Doctor Doom themed coffee shop pop-up for attendees of the festival. James Gunn took to Instagram this week with a fit check from the set of Superman: Man of Tomorrow, revealing a first look at Nicholas Hoult in Lex Luthor's iconic mech-suit, which in the comics gives Luthor superhuman strength, flight, and force fields. The image also appears to show a sandy, otherworldly backdrop, leaving plenty to speculate about heading into the film's 2027 release. A24's Backrooms had one of the biggest opening weekends of the year, pulling in 81 million dollars domestically and 118 million worldwide in its debut, the largest opening in A24 history and more than triple what Civil War earned in 2024. The film was adapted from the viral YouTube web series by its creator Kane Parsons, who at 20 years old is now the youngest filmmaker ever to open a number one film, and was produced for roughly 10 million dollars. Returning for a 3rd episode and to help us get closer to our 10th anniversary, Arizona cosplayer and creator Sara Moni Cosplay joins me. We originally recorded an episode in 2016 during my first year, and then she returned in 2020. Now here we are, reflecting on the past, present, and futures of our fandoms and passions. We kick things off with a through line through our previous conversations, as we once again return to the X-Men. We talk about the past several years of X-Men media, from movies like New Mutants, to X-Men 97, and the inclusion of X-Men characters in the MCU. Sara and I discuss what could be coming in the MCU with Doomsday, and what she'd like to see from the future of the X-Men and other mutants in the MCU. Sara and I also dip our toes into the comics by talking about the Krakoa run. From there, we talk about something new. Monster High doll collecting. We talk about how Sara's gotten into this new space of fandom and how her collection has grown and the process of adding to the collection. Plus, we talk about the characters lend themselves well to be cosplayed. We wrap up with a great overview of what Sara is doing now. A few months ago, it inched a tiny bit closer to midnight. Mark wondered whether this phenomenon was akin to how the news media incessantly reports on bad things so as to boost their audience, so he asked Joe about who makes the Clock-setting decisions and whether they serve any real purpose other than generating alarming headlines.
