The world has grown quiet about climate change. Too quiet. We scroll past floods, fires, droughts… and move on with our day.As if the problem solved itself. As if we've earned the luxury to look away.Janos Pasztor (full episode) has spent 40 years inside the rooms where climate decisions are made — from serving as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Change to advising presidents, prime ministers, and global institutions. And in this SPARK20 highlight episode, one truth stood out:We are not done with climate change. We are only entering its most consequential chapter. This is not a doom story. It is the story of a man who still believes humanity can choose a better future — if we're willing to face the questions we've been avoiding. What You'll Learn in 20 MinutesWhy global warming accelerates even as we reduce emissions (00:01:15)  And why governments are still “not addressing the issue sufficiently.”Why adaptation alone cannot save us (00:01:54)  And what the real limits of adaptation look like. Why Janos believes we may need to cool parts of the planet (00:02:32)  And why no political leader wants to say it out loud. How climate diplomacy changed since the 1980s — and why it matters now (00:03:32)  Including the rise of China in global negotiations. Why capitalism itself may need to evolve (00:08:05)  And what this means for investors, innovation, and global stability. What geoengineering really is (and is not) (00:09:16)  Forget the internet myths — this is the factual explanation. Why volcanic eruptions hold a clue to future climate solutions (00:12:04) Why SRM is scientifically feasible — and politically dangerous (00:17:11)  The technology is simple. The governance is not.Why the biggest risk of SRM is not cost — but consent (00:17:44)  And what happens when societies don't get a say. What a unilateral climate intervention could trigger (00:20:33)  A scenario every policymaker should hear. Why Janos still believes in a brighter future (00:21:07)  A rare moment of optimism from someone who has seen every side of the crisis.Quotes to Carry With You

Since the 1960s, scientists have been developing and honing models to understand how the earth's climate is changing. One such pioneer of early climate modelling is Syukuro Manabe, who won the Nobel prize in physics in 2021 for his work laying the foundation for our current understanding of how carbon dioxide affects global temperatures. A seminal paper he co-published in 1967 was voted the most influential climate science paper of all time.In this episode,  we speak to Nadir Jeevanjee, a researcher at the same lab in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration where Manabe once worked, to look at the history of these early climate models, and how many of their major predictions have stood the test of time. And yet, as climate negotiators gather in the Brazilian city of Belem on the edge of the Amazon for the Cop30 climate summit, the data sources that climate scientists around the world rely on to monitor and model the climate are under threat from funding cuts by the Trump administration. This episode was produced by Mend Mariwany, Katie Flood and Gemma Ware. Ahead of the United Nations 30th annual climate conference, Bill Gates released a memo that, you could say, surprised a lot of people. That's because in this memo he seemingly changed his position on climate change, acknowledging that there is no “doomsday” risk from global warming. Now, the memo is long (it's over 5,000 words) and it's filled with data, graphs, charts, and anecdotes—laying out the argument that climate change is not going to lead to the end of civilization, that measuring temperatures isn't the best measure of progress on the issue, and that thirdly, the money being spent on climate related issues would be better allocated towards improving human health and prosperity.

Landfills across African cities are catching fire and releasing methane, an invisible greenhouse gas with more short-term warming potential than CO2. Sustainable strategist Mohamed A. Sultan reveals how local communities are turning this crisis into opportunity, diverting hundreds of tons of waste from landfills and helping thousands of farmers adopt more sustainable techniques. Learn why cutting methane emissions is a win-win opportunity to drive down global temperatures while also creating more livable cities. We delve into the UAE National Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Biennale, titled "Pressure Cooker" with curator Azza Aboualam. An assistant professor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University Dubai and co-founder of Holesum Studio, Aboualam explains how architecture can be a cornerstone for achieving food security, particularly in challenging climates like UAE's and the broader Gulf region. Inspired by a simple question from her mother about the origin of blueberries in the UAE, Aboualam's work explored the intersection of architectural design and food production, focusing on innovative greenhouse typologies. The "Pressure Cooker" exhibition showcases how traditional and high-tech architectural elements can be reconfigured to prolong growing seasons and expand food production within the UAE. We unpack the complexities of food security as a national priority, the economic and environmental costs of imported food, and the surprising prevalence of individual-led greenhouse projects in the UAE. We also touch upon the fascinating historical context of food in the UAE, the impact of population growth on food systems, and a unique architectural cookbook attached to the project, which frames the conversation around food and built environments. 0:00:00 The UAE's Vision For Food Security0:02:40 "Pressure Cooker": Architecture and Food Flow0:03:33 The Blueberry Revelation: Origin of the Idea0:04:38 Why Food Security Is an Architectural Problem in the UAE0:05:48 The Urgency of Food Security In The UAE0:07:08 Global Warming and Food Production Challenges0:08:08 Inside The "Pressure Cooker" UAE Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 20250:10:41 A Call to Action and Moment of Reflection0:11:55 The True Cost of Food0:12:21 Greenhouses: a Common Practice in the UAE0:14:16 The "Kit-of-Parts" Innovation0:14:42 The Adaptable Greenhouse System0:16:07 Food Production in Apartment Living0:16:44 Sparking Broader Conversations0:17:30 Individual vs. Urban Scale Food Production0:19:08 Who Is Doing Food Security Well?0:20:32 Food Infrastructure in the UAE0:21:56 Regional Knowledge Sharing0:23:02 Local Food Production and Sufficiency0:23:53 Oil Revenue's Impact on Food Security0:25:01 Pressure Cooker Recipes: An Architectural Cookbook0:26:44 Engaging With Local Farmers0:28:18 Pathway to Food Independence0:29:03 Defining Food Independence0:30:54 Supermarkets: a Changing Landscape0:32:08 Historical Food Production in the UAE0:33:11 Migration and Food Systems0:35:00 Resources for Learning About Food Security0:36:51 The Problem of Food Waste0:39:17 Packaging Waste in the F&B IndustryUpcoming event

In episode 239 of America Adapts, Doug Parsons revisits his conversation with Dr. Katharine Mach, Professor at the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and a lead author for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. Katharine explains the process of drafting that report and how the media both succeeds and fails at communicating its urgency. Doug and Katharine also discussed the need to rethink the role and purpose of the IPCC as it prepares for its next major assessment—especially now, as the Trump administration dismantles the National Climate Assessment and scales back federal climate programs, making the IPCC's global work more important than ever. That makes the IPCC's independent, global work even more vital—providing the scientific foundation the world, and especially the U.S., still needs to understand and respond to climate risk. Transcript available here. Topics covered: IPCC is a grand partnership between the governments of the world. How did the media do in reporting on the IPCC report? The IPCC has zero regulatory authority over sovereign nations. What does it mean to be a lead author for the IPCC. Many developing countries don't have the climate data and experts that developed countries have. How can the IPCC be relevant to adaptation planners in the U.S. Who is the audience for the IPCC report and how do you communicate to different audiences. How can American policymakers make use of the IPCC report. Adaptation education at the University of Miami Key Quotes: “Adaptation isn't a checklist—it's a continuous conversation about what kind of future we want.” “Climate risk is always filtered through inequality.” “Transformative adaptation is about changing the rules of the game, not just moving the pieces.” “Science must learn to listen before it speaks.” Check out the America Adapts Media Kit here!
