Today we are honored to give the stage to DCAC Dianna Walsh Smoot, the daughter of trailblazing Dallas Police Lt Bill Walsh. For thirty-five years, the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center has stood as a guardian for society's most vulnerable victims, serving as a steadfast bulwark against the darkness of child abuse and neglect. Through compassion, advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to justice, the Center has provided a safe haven where children find their voices, families find hope, and offenders are held accountable. For more than three decades, its dedicated professionals, partners, and supporters have formed a protective shield around countless children, ensuring that no child has to face trauma alone. As the organization marks thirty-five years of service, its legacy is measured not only in the lives it has protected, but in the futures it has restored—standing watch as a beacon of hope, healing, and courage for generations of children across North Texas. In this episode, Dianna Smoot shares that remarkable legacy while reflecting on the evolution of the internationally renowned Crimes Against Children Conference. What began as a modest gathering of professionals committed to protecting children has grown into the largest conference of its kind in the world, bringing together investigators, prosecutors, child advocates, medical professionals, and educators from across the globe. The conference stands as a testament to Dallas' leadership in the fight against child abuse and exploitation, fostering collaboration, innovation, and a shared mission to safeguard children everywhere. Through Dianna's perspective, we explore how a small meeting became a global movement—and how the work of protecting children continues to unite thousands in the pursuit of justice, healing, and hope. Commercial geospatial intelligence has moved from nice-to-have imagery to core national security infrastructure. And Vantor is trying to reposition itself for that new era. On this week's episode of Valley of Depth, we sit down with Dan Smoot, CEO of Vantor, to unpack the company's transformation from a legacy satellite imagery provider into a space-based intelligence platform serving defense, intelligence, international, and enterprise customers. The shift is bigger than a rebrand. Vantor is betting that the future of geospatial intelligence is not just sharper pixels from orbit, but the ability to turn space-based data into software, AI-driven insights, autonomous navigation, sovereign intelligence systems, and real-time operational decision-making. We cover: How Vantor is moving beyond imagery into space-based intelligence Why the Maxar rebrand was necessary, even if controversial How commercial GEOINT is becoming a national security layer How Vantor's 3D data supports autonomous systems and GPS-denied operations Why partnerships with companies like Anduril matter for the future battlefield How Ukraine changed the government's view of commercial imagery Where Vantor fits into Golden Dome and missile defense Why sovereign geospatial capabilities are becoming a global priority …and much more.   • Chapters • 00:00 - Trailer & Intro 01:06 – Maxar Intelligence 02:39 – An outside view coming into the space industry 05:12 – The Maxar rebrand 09:00 – Product offerings and customers 12:15 – Vantage and Pulse 16:31 – Does being under a private equity firm change how Vantor operates? 18:53 – Vantor's partnership with Anduril 21:41 – EOCL (Earth Observation Commercial Layer) 25:24 – Cultural impact of commercial intelligence on global conflicts 29:46 – Vantor x Golden Dome architecture 30:48 – How Chinese tech compares to the US 33:25 – Capabilities of Tensorglobe that a customer could deploy today 36:17 – Raptor 38:42 – When will we have a sub-15-minute revisit at sub-20cm resolution? 43:35 – The winning valuation of Vantor for Advent 47:51 – Lanteris's revenue multiples 51:28 – What Dan would change about commercial EO and policy today 53:51 – What does Dan do for fun?   • Show notes • Vantor's website — https://vantor.com Vantor's' socials — https://x.com/vantortech Mo's socials — https://x.com/itsmoislam Payload's socials — https://twitter.com/payloadspace / https://www.linkedin.com/company/payloadspace Ignition's socials — https://twitter.com/ignitionnuclear /  https://www.linkedin.com/company/ignition-nuclear/ Tectonic's socials  — https://twitter.com/tectonicdefense / https://www.linkedin.com/company/tectonicdefense/ Valley of Depth archive — Listen: https://pod.payloadspace.com/   • About us • Valley of Depth is a podcast about the technologies that matter — and the people building them. In this deeply candid conversation, Ruby opens up about pregnancy after infertility while battling OCD and intrusive thoughts, navigating severe nausea called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), and what it felt like to hold hope and despair at the same time, and how becoming pregnant didn't magically erase the mental health struggles she was carrying. Because as many of us know: having babies doesn't fix everything — you still have to heal. She also talks about getting pregnant again, and having HG a second time. On this week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome Katelynn Smoot – wife, mother, advocate, and the fiercely devoted mama of little Lilah, the bright, joyful warrior behind Stand With Lilah. At just 18 months old, Lilah was diagnosed with ATRT-MYC, a rare and aggressive form of childhood brain cancer. Since that moment, Katelynn and her husband have been full-time caregivers — navigating hospital stays, treatments, sleepless nights, and the emotional, physical, and financial toll that childhood cancer brings. While the world saw the incredible moment when Taylor Swift donated $100,000 to Lilah's GoFundMe and the Swifties who followed and matched it (which is INCREDIBLE!), most people don't see the day-to-day reality: the cost of cancer, the strain placed on young families, and the unimaginable strength it takes to keep going. Still, through all the pain, fear, and uncertainty, Katelynn continues to show up with unwavering love, honesty, and hope. She uses social media to illuminate the realities of childhood cancer — for awareness, community, and to help others. And in the midst of caring for Lilah and raising their two babies, Katelynn and her family are also working to bless other families facing ATRT and childhood cancer this Christmas, raising money and collecting gift cards to spread comfort and love this Christmas. Because this season is focused on the 1980's, and we are talking about the two best free soloists of their generations, Peter Croft and John Bachar,  there is a Venn Diagram that puts today's guest squarely in the center: Jeff Smoot.  In Jeff's book Hangdog Days: Conflict, Change and the Race for 5.14, he tells the tale of the beginnings of sport climbing in the U.S. -  of Alan Watts and Todd Skinner - tales that John Bachar often plays the antagonist for. His most recent book, All and Nothing: Inside Free Soloing, takes a look at, among others, Bachar and Croft.  And Jeff was there for much of it. What can we learn from them?Today on the show, we tell the nearly 100-year-old story of Smoot and Hawley, that explains why Congress decided to delegate tariff power to the executive branch in the first place. It's a story that weaves in wool, humble buckwheat, tiny little goldfish, and even Ferris Bueller... Anyone? Anyone? It's also what set the stage for the Trump tariffs. President-elect Donald Trump enacted a heap of import taxes in his first term, in particular on goods from China. President Biden's administration largely kept those tariffs in place, and levied new tariffs as well, on electric vehicles and solar panels. And now, as Trump's second presidency is on the horizon, he has promised even more tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China, and even on all imports across the board. And now, as Trump's second presidency is on the horizon, he has promised even more tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China, and even on all imports across the board. We update this classic episode about the Smoot Hawley Tariffs, and review the impact of more recent efforts from Trump and Biden alike.Help support Planet Money by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney.
