In the early hours of the morning, Lee and another cadet watched a silent oval-shaped object descend toward them, pass directly overhead at low altitude, and then shoot away at impossible speed after performing sudden direction changes. Then we move on to our second guest Brittany, calling from New York state in the US. Over the past year she has experienced repeated orb encounters ranging from distant lights in the sky to low-level activity directly over her yard. What if flow, insight, and mystical experience are different scales of the same underlying process? In this standalone Lectern episode, John Vervaeke speaks with Hüseyin and Daniel about their recently published paper on the cognitive continuum: a framework that moves from fluency to insight, flow, mystical experience, and transformation. The discussion develops Vervaeke's earlier work on relevance realization by bringing it into dialogue with the enactive approach, complex dynamic systems theory, and contemporary psychedelic research. The episode begins with the enactive critique of a simple subject-object split. Daniel explains why both self and world are groundless in the enactive sense: not nonexistent, but not pregiven independent substances either. Self and world arise relationally through embodied sensemaking. This matters because mystical experiences often involve a loosening or collapse of the ordinary self-world boundary. Hüseyin then walks through the paper's core argument. Fluency is reframed as a local form of attunement, not merely ease of information processing. Insight becomes a more global reorganization of the system. Flow becomes an insight cascade: a temporally extended state of metastable attunement. Mystical experience becomes the most global state on the continuum, where the deepest structures of self-world organization can be destabilized and reorganized. The conversation also makes a strong ethical point. Experiences that loosen ordinary constraints are not automatically good. Psychedelic states, mystical experiences, contemplative practices, and mindfulness can create epistemic vulnerability. Depending on context, they can become transformative, but they can also lead to derealization, depersonalization, false insight, spiritual bypassing, narcissism, or psychosis. Integration, practices, ethical frameworks, communities, and traditions matter because transformation is not produced by the state alone. Key Insights Mystical experience cannot be adequately explained by neurobiology alone. Enactivism challenges both naive realism and idealism by treating cognition as embodied, embedded, and relational. Relevance realization and sensemaking converge around a shared account of how cognition finds and enacts significance. Fluency is a domain-general feeling of attunement with the world. Insight is not only a representational shift; it can be a reorganization of the person-world system. Flow can be understood as a cascade of insights sustained through metastable attunement. Mystical experience may involve a globalized form of relevance realization, or even the release of relevance realization's ordinary grasping. Transformative experience requires more than destabilization; it requires viable reorganization. Context, set, setting, integration, ethical orientation, and community shape whether self-transcendent experiences help or harm. Scientific work on these topics needs reflexivity because research itself participates in the world it describes. Tonight's guest is VJ, calling from California, who recounts a close-range encounter with a structured craft deep in the mountains of Central Mexico. While guiding expeditions through ancient Mesoamerican regions, he was taken to a remote UFO hotspot by two indigenous companions. At around 3AM, a metallic disc estimated at 20 meters in diameter appeared across a ravine, hovering silently just above the ground. The object remained in view for nearly an hour, vanishing and reappearing without any visible propulsion. What followed was something far stranger. The US Government finally disclosed files on UFOs / UAPs, sort of. Much of what was released included black dots, witnesses to balloons and kites, bright lights seen in the sky, and stories so old they are part of both pop culture and UFO-mythology, including incursions over nuclear-related facilities such as national labs. Newer records released somehow are even less credible than those from the 1940s, the latter of which have already been public knowledge. These include “ghost rockets” and “foo fighters.” The same is true for Apollo reports of strange phenomena. So what was this “disclosure” all about? Could it simply be a distraction? Could it be that the real “evidence” will be presented in Disclosure Day when it is released as a fictional film?  Furthermore, there are some real core issues here that need addressing: UFOs are NOT proof of aliens or inter-dimensionsals, nor are they evidence of fallen angels, nephilim, demons, etc.  When has the government ever instructed the public to make their own decisions, especially about controversial subjects like UFOs — wouldn't this lead to grandiose fantasies being reinforced by an official stamp? … Could it be a rewriting of UFO history in preparation to disclose that there actually is an explanation for what was released — this is exactly what the intelligence community (CIA) and military suggested doing in the 1950s (Robertson Panel Report). In other words, are these files nothing more than a 75 year old policy being reinforced? The real conspiracy appears to be, then, that the government has no idea what these things are but were worried the public would figure it out before they could, and before they could exploit it for their own purposes. Why would ancient aliens use propulsion systems and space suits recognizable only to modern man and his inventions? Wouldn't they be far more advanced? Or could it be that the subject changes with technology and understanding of the natural world? Tonight's guest is Ron Barber. In 1978, while working in television news, Ron reported on a series of strange events unfolding across rural Missouri. Cattle were being found dead under unusual conditions, with missing tissue, no clear cause, and no easy explanation. At the same time, reports of unexplained lights and objects in the sky were coming in from the same areas. Ron was there, speaking to ranchers, visiting sites, and documenting what was happening as it unfolded.
