While her musical journey began busking on the streets of Australia, she now embodies multiple facets of the arts sector, taking a step away from the stage to amplify the music industry's underrepresented voice as the new executive director at the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (OMIC). In addition to years of performing and touring, Melanie has worked as a consultant, mentor, booking and PR agent, and radio promoter for Indigenous artists. Her passion for collaboration and advocacy has led her to initiate numerous projects including founding a women-led collective of songwriters, fundraising and speaking on behalf of mental health organizations, and developing youth workshops on songwriting and self-confidence. In her work as a dynamic organizer and facilitator, Melanie's purpose is to connect, unite, and empower the communities around her.______________Presented by Folk Music OntarioHosted by Rosalyn DennettProduced by Kayla Nezon and Rosalyn DennettEdited by Jordan Moore of The Pod CabinTheme music “Amsterdam” by King CardiacArtwork by Jaymie Karn
Melanie Brulée is a bilingual singer/songwriter originally from Cornwall, Ontario. She spent much of her 20s living in Australia, where she first picked up a guitar and developed an interest in singing and songwriting. She came back to Canada and quickly established herself on stages and at festivals across Canada and in the United States. She's got two full-length albums out, a French-language album called Débridée, which came out in 2015, and an English language album, Fires, Floods, and Things We Leave Behind, which came out in 2018. As you'll hear in our interview, after some intense touring and hard work promoting that album, Melanie found herself burned out and questioning the direction she was headed in. A step away from music allowed her to focus on other areas of interest, including mental illness and mental health, which took on new importance for her after she learned, long after the fact, that her estranged father had taken his own life. This led her to learn more about mental illness and deal with mental health issues of her own. In conjunction with Mental Illness Awareness Week 2020, Melanie organized a series of conversations about mental health on Instagram Live and released a powerful song and video called “The Mess,” which is a take on an all-too-familiar inner struggle: a showdown between Anxiety and Depression, each fighting for power over its host, leaving THE MESS in the wake. This year, she released another powerful song and video relating to the topic, this time in French, called “Crier.” More information, videos, and music credits: https://wp.me/pdcjXL-83

Amanda Rheaume's fifth album "The Skin I'm In" (Release date: Feb 15 2019), the follow up to the very well-received "Holding Patterns" from 2016, is an upbeat Americana-pop roots recording with a central message, most powerfully stated on the title track, that 'it's really okay to just be you'. The new album was produced by Colin Cripps (Blue Rodeo, Jim Cuddy Band) and features nine original songs, co-written with Jason Blaine, Justin Glasco (Andrew Bird, Avril Lavigne), Tim Bovacanti, Melanie Brulée, Jim Bryson and more. Amanda Rheaume will be releasing the new album with shows in Ottawa (Feb 16), Toronto (Feb 21), Kingston (Feb 23) and Peterborough (Mar 1) before heading to Europe for a spring tour. Toronto’s Melanie Brulée joins us on Episode 404 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about her great new Americana album “Fires, Floods & Things We Leave Behind", a fabulous slice of pedal steel driven country music that comes equipped with its own widescreen spaghetti western like vibe to kick things off. It's a great conversation. I hope you’ll stick around for that. We also take a look at more of the new music we've received including new releases from Sarah MacDougall, Oliver The Crow, Melanie Dekker, Vishtèn, Ivan Rosenberg, Ken Tizzard, Lennie Gallant alongside a tribute to the sadly departed 'Swamp King' Tony Joe White. British Columbia based singer-songwriter David Graff joins us on Episode 402 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about his new album “Supposed To Fly”. David has just returned to writing and recording after a twenty year gap. Despite some early success, with songs placed in movies and television, and an EP called “Some Of What I Know”, David dropped out of the music business in the late nineties to pursue a career as a visual artist. However, he’s back with a truly fabulous collection of songs. You really need to hear this interview and check out this new album. We also check out the latest releases from The Maes, Claire Coupland, Melanie Brulée, Ann Vriend, The Jeremiahs, Orit Shimoni and Cheshire Carr. "Fires, Floods & Things We Leave Behind", the great new album from Melanie Brulée, is a fabulous slice of pedal steel driven country music that comes equipped with its own widescreen spaghetti western like vibe to kick things off. Melanie Brulée is in fine voice on twelve tracks that reflect on relationships, loss and addiction while taking us back to the golden age of country music, and joined by some great players including pedal steel player Kevin "The General" Neal who brings much of the sound to the recording, with guitars from Champagne James Robertson (Lindi Ortega, New Country Rehab), Kyle Teixeira on bass and Adam Warner on drums. This is definitely not your average country album - and a recording you must check out. We caught up with Melanie Brulée in Toronto to chat about the new project. Music: Melanie Brulée "I Will", "Pretty Wasteland" and "Whiskey & Whine" from "Fires Floods & Things We Leave Behind" (2018, Lapin Blanc).
