We talk about Lithium-ion batteries on aircraft with the president and chief executive officer of UL Standards & Engagement. In the news this episode, we have some recent Lithium-ion battery issues on commercial flights, the A320-family corruption of flight data due to solar activity, and network-based location trackers for checked bags. Guest Jeff Marootian is the president and chief executive officer of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), a nonprofit safety advocacy organization. Jeff leads global efforts to advance safety and sustainability through standards development and advocacy. He is also a leading authority on rechargeable batteries and travel safety. ULSE has developed a new campaign to raise awareness of the fire risks associated with rechargeable devices in aviation at A Simple Step for a Safer Flight. It provides good information for people planning to travel. Jeff explains that Lithium-ion battery incidents are rare, but their frequency is increasing in airports and in the air. ULSE advocates for keeping rechargeable devices within arm's reach, and certainly not in checked baggage. We look at Lithium-ion thermal runaway, and Jeff tells us that it often results from batteries that are damaged, poorly constructed, or lack certification to a safety standard. Other topics we cover include the use of containment devices on airplanes, the need for a consensus process to deal with devices that are smoking or on fire, and how a coalition of stakeholders is working to address these concerns. Jeff also tells us what to look for when making a decision to purchase a rechargeable device. For more, see: Lithium-Ion Battery Incidents in Aviation: 2024 Data Review. Previously, Jeff led the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, following roles as Senior Advisor to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and as a Special Assistant to the President in the Biden-Harris White House. Aviation News Eight People Rushed To Hospital After Smoking Battery Pack Fills Airplane Cabin With Toxic Fumes While passengers were boarding a Scandinavian airline SAS A320 at Norway's Oslo Airport, smoke started pouring out of a portable battery pack in a passenger's bag, filling the cabin with toxic smoke. The crew used a Halon fire extinguisher on the bag and removed it from the plane, then transferred it to the tarmac, where the airport fire brigade took over. The battery pack did relight before it was contained. Eight people were taken to the hospital with suspected toxic smoke inhalation, and all were discharged within 48 hours. United Flight Diverts to Dublin After Another Laptop Falls Into Business Class Seat A passenger’s laptop computer became trapped in the business class seat on United Airlines Flight UA925 flight from London to Washington. The plane was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Dublin. Solar flare vulnerability in A320 software forces emergency action by airlines In a recent press release, (Airbus update on A320 Family precautionary fleet action), Airbus said, “Analysis of a recent event involving an A320 Family aircraft has revealed that intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls.” Airbus consequently identified a significant number of A320 Family aircraft currently in service that may be impacted. The “recent event” was the uncommanded drop in altitude by a JetBlue A320 on October 30, 2025 that resulted in injuries and an emergency landing. Airbus says that “The subsequent investigation [After the incident] identified a vulnerability with the ELAC B hardware fitted with software L104 in case of exposure to solar flares. This identified vulnerability could lead in the worst case scenario to an uncommanded elevator movement that may result in exceeding the aircraft structural capability.” Airlines are instructed, according to The Air Current, “to either roll back to an earlier version of the software or replace the affected elevator aileron computer (ELAC) hardware with one containing the older software version. The maintenance action is expected to take three hours, according to the Airbus advisory.” AirTag's newest feature could work even better now for many travelers The Apple AirTag is useful for tracking the location of objects. There are other Bluetooth and network-based trackers available from Tile, Samsung, Chipolo, and other manufacturers. Air travelers use these trackers to locate their lost luggage. Last year, Apple introduced a “Share Item Location” feature. With the latest upgrade, you can share an AirTag's location with select airlines, allowing them to locate your luggage quickly. The AirTag API enables the seamless flow of detailed location information directly into an airline's backend. Apple and Delta have developed a tool that airlines can use. A Victorian Christmas looks cozy on greeting cards—glowing candle-lit trees, shimmering tinsel, children gathered around the fire. But behind the snow-globe charm was a season of deadly house fires, toxic decorations, poisoned sweets, and experimental electric lights that turned “old-fashioned Christmas” into a very real nightmare. In this episode of Terrifying & True, we dig into the true history of how festive traditions nearly burned homes to the ground, poisoned entire families, and forced the world to rethink what “safe” even meant.Inside this episode:Candle-lit Christmas trees as ticking time bombs: How dry fir branches, open flames, and flammable Victorian fashion created instant infernos in parlors across Britain and beyond.Toxic snow, tinsel, and ornaments: From cotton “snow” that flashed into flame to lead-based tinsel and arsenic-dyed decorations that slowly poisoned anyone who touched or tasted them.Deadly toys and poisoned treats: The rise of arsenic greens, adulterated candies, and tainted puddings, and the chilling real-life stories of children who paid the price for “holiday cheer.”Early electric lights and new kinds of danger: How the “safe” alternative to candles—experimental electric light strings and overloaded wiring—brought shocks, sparks, and fresh fears to the Christmas season. From horror to reform: The fires, poisonings, and public scandals that pushed governments, scientists, and ordinary families toward modern safety standards, consumer protections, and fire codes that still save lives today. This Christmas, as you plug in your UL-listed lights and hang shatterproof ornaments, remember the people who learned these lessons the hardest way possible—and the ghostly echoes of Victorian Christmases that still haunt our holidays. We're telling that story tonight.

Send us a textForget the postcard version of Dodge City. We open the door to the Great Western Hotel and step into a town intent on trading dust for dignity, noise for order, and short-term profits for a longer arc of respectability. The surprise is in the name itself: Great Western wasn't a nod to cattle drives; it was a bid to borrow the prestige of Brunel's railway and steamship, the Victorian shorthand for speed, reliability, and modern life. That branding choice tells us more about ambition on the plains than any staged gunfight ever could. We follow the transformation from the unpolished Western House to a hotel with plate glass, private rooms, and a no-whiskey policy under Dr. Samuel Galland, a German immigrant who believed Dodge City could be sober and civilized. Along the way, we separate trail reality from tourist memory: drovers called it the Western or the Dodge City Trail, while the phrase Great Western Trail arrived decades later through scholarship and heritage markers that retconned the landscape. The evidence runs through ledgers, newspapers, and the lived language of the men who drove the herds. The human stories make the stakes tangible. A silk-top-hatted dentist walks Front Street on principle and learns the cost of standing out before earning respect. Fires scorch the business district, owners come and go, the hotel changes names and survives the Dust Bowl, then vanishes in 1942—only to reappear as a museum gateway that sits near modern trail markers, inviting a tempting but false connection. What remains is the real takeaway: the West wasn't just won by grit; it was branded into being by people who knew that names can move minds as surely as rails move trains. If this reframe challenged a myth you held, share the episode, leave a rating, and tell us which Western “truth” you want us to unpack next. Chris Cuomo responds directly to a flood of viewer comments and questions — from accusations that he's “changed,” to criticism of his Alan Dershowitz interview, to claims that he's too hard or too soft on Trump. He addresses confusion around shutdown politics, breaks down the realities of the ACA debate, and pushes back on misinformation about what Trump did or didn't do — including his shifting claim about “ending seven wars.” Cuomo also explains why outrage remains the dominant political currency online, and why so many people mistake anger for clarity. Cuomo digs into arguments about wealth, privilege, and independence; clarifies his views on Epstein, Venezuela, and selective outrage; and calls out how social media's algorithmic incentives twist honest disagreement into hostility. He talks openly about intensity, decency, and why provocation has replaced persuasion — and closes with a reminder not to waste moments with family on fights that don't matter. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the one-hundredth-and-seventeenth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by MAJ Marc Howle, the Brigade Senior Engineer / Protection Observer-Coach-Trainer, and MAJ David Pfaltzgraff, BDE S-3 Operations OCT, from Brigade Command & Control (BDE HQ) on behalf of the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guests are senior members of JRTC's fires support enterprise: MAJ Jeff Horn, MSG Esteban Melendez, and SFC Larry Gillispie, Jr. MAJ Horn is the Executive Officer OCT for the Fires Support Task Force. MSG Melendez is the Battery Senior NCO OCT and SFC Gillispie is the Fires Direction Center Senior OCT for the Fires Support TF. This episode centers on the critical role of indirect fires in enabling brigade and battalion maneuver during large-scale combat operations (LSCO). Discussion emphasized how modern battlefields—defined by continuous observation, rapid enemy counterfire, and contested electromagnetic terrain—demand faster, simpler, and more integrated fires processes. The episode explored the necessity of marrying intelligence, targeting, and maneuver to generate timely and accurate effects, noting that units frequently struggle with building effective EVENTEMPs, aligning priority intelligence requirements with high-payoff target lists, and ensuring fire support elements understand the commander's visualization. Indirect fires are no longer a supporting arm that can be “plugged in” at the end of planning; instead, fires must lead maneuver, set conditions, disrupt enemy reconnaissance, and shape the tempo of operations. Units that succeeded at JRTC did so by developing disciplined fires rehearsals, maintaining digital pathways for observers and FSEs, and employing simple, survivable fire support plans that could be executed under degraded conditions. The episode also examined common shortfalls in fire support execution and provided practical solutions rooted in LSCO best practices. Many units struggled to connect sensors to shooters, often due to poor task organization, inconsistent digital connectivity, or a lack of rehearsed triggers and decision points. The conversation stressed that fires must be integrated early, beginning at WARNO 1, so that reconnaissance, counter-reconnaissance, and targeting all feed a coherent fires architecture. Leaders must enforce conditions that enable fires in contact: dispersed artillery positions, rapid survivability moves, redundant communications, and timely, accurate reporting. Best practices discussed included using decoys to force enemy action, leveraging sUAS for battle damage assessment and real-time refinement, simplifying TLWS/TTLODAC products, and conducting thorough fires technical rehearsals. Ultimately, the episode reinforced that mastery of indirect fires is inseparable from mastery of LSCO itself—units that can sense, decide, and deliver effects faster than the enemy preserve freedom of maneuver and dominate the fight. Send us a textI released a free training that shares the 4 steps I use to help clients reduce eczema, inflammation, and food-reaction symptoms by 50%+ in a few months — without restriction or overwhelm. Watch here: christabiegler.com/blueprintThis week, I'm breaking down the simplest, most practical steps I use with clients to spot mold issues and support cleaner indoor air. After talking with naturopathic oncologist Michael Robinson (his new episode airs next week), I was reminded how foundational air and water quality are for immune resilience and cancer prevention. Mold is far more common than most people realize, and with a few inexpensive tools and a calm, empowered approach, you can get a clearer picture of what's happening in your home and your body.KEY TAKEAWAYS: • Mold symptoms can look like skin issues, sinus congestion, yeast, or frequent illness • Stress can reactivate old mold exposures • Check water areas for bubbling floors, stains, or separating walls or baseboards • Use humidity meters in bathrooms and the kitchen • Fans and fast drying prevent many issues • Thermal guns help spot cold or moisture areas • ERMI dust testing is better than air samples • Supporting your nervous system helps immune recovery • I upgraded to Jaspr for stronger filtration and cleaner air⚡Jaspr Air Scrubber Commercial-grade, steel-built, and filters 5× more than typical purifiers. Removes 100% airborne mold (per their testing) in 3 hours and may reduce snoring and throat clearing. $799 ($400 off) with code “lessstressed” through 12/1, then it goes back to $200 off.Episodes Mentioned:245 I split tested urine mycotoxins (mold) and here are my results with Christa317 Environmental Mold Remediation with Michael Rubino, Founder of HomeCleanse334 Mold Remediation Made Easier with Dr. Emily Kiberd336 DIY Mold Inspection & New Construction (Part 2) with Michael Rubino355 Air Quality After Floods and Fires with Mike FeldsteinCLICK HERE for more mold episodes! ❓Question for Christa? Now that all of Israel’s living hostages are home and the vast majority of the bodies of deceased hostages have been returned, the “line of thinking” among many Israeli military and political leaders is “we have nothing to lose” and “we can continue our fight against Hamas,” says Haaretz senior security analyst Amos Harel. Members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, he believes, are clearly “looking for an excuse” to return to full-fledged war. Speaking on the Haaretz Podcast, Harel discussed the challenges of ensuring security on Israel’s southern and northern borders and rebuilding and rehabilitating Gaza, given the “vague” nature of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for an international stabilization force and a ruling Board of Peace. In the meantime, Hamas remains fully armed and in control of nearly half of Gaza. The Americans “have some vague ideas about how to solve things, but nothing ever moves ahead,” Harel observed. “Will there be an international force? Will any country in the world risk the lives of its soldiers and put them in harm's way trying to restrain Hamas? These are big challenges for the Americans.” On the podcast, Harel also discussed the fragile cease-fire with Hezbollah on its northern border and the firestorm in Israel's military and political arenas over accountability for the October 7 attacks.
