Todd Durkin IMPACT Show

A few years ago I shared my Reinvention Series that was wildly popular (Ep. 301-306). It shared my 3.5 year period of going through a terribly difficult time that included a debilitating back injury, 2nd knee replacement, sleep apnea diagnosis, being burnt-out, and ultimately exiting Fitness Quest 10 from day-to-day operations. What I realize now is that it was all a setup for what is about to be NEXT. I recently made a huge decision that is setting up my next step in business & life. But I had to take the FIRST step before advancing to the NEXT step. After 25-years of being in my original location where I started my gym, I have decided to NOT renew my lease. There are several reasons why and I will share all of them on today's IMPACT SHOW episode. As a matter of fact, tune-in to today's first episode of a series called ‘Next Chapter Starts Now' that will end with one of the biggest 2 announcements in my entire fitness & coaching career. LITERALLY. Here is what I will discuss today: Why this is (kinda) my last podcast ever… What I believe is next? Top “10” Reflections on 25-Years in the “Roots” including… 1. Reggie Bush puking off the balcony 2. Training “LT” (LaDainian Tomlinson) for the 1st time 3. Training Drew Brees for the 1st time 4. The diamond girl coming into the gym to show me engagement rings 5. My Boom Box was a mainstay for years! 6. Svarpa Yoga and a curtain between my TD Fitness Classes and that yoga class.  7. The “Green Room” and the “Blue Room”—2 massage rooms 8. Melanie & I painting the ROOTS before we opened with our first golden retriever, Sid. 9. The power of Community. September 11, 2001. The fires in Scripps Ranch in 2003. Fires again in 2006. COMMUNITY in the good times and the tough times. . 10. Expanding…twice. First, 2002 Took over a breast-pump rental store. Gave us an extra 1,000 square feet. Then in 2006, we took over downstairs. It was a 500K expansion. I was scared and excited. 11. And Then Some: The 6-things I put on a Notecard to manifest an additional $10,000 per month when expanding. I end today's episode with 4 Coaching Questions for you to answer: 1. Have you ever moved from something that makes little or no sense to the outside world, but it feels so RIGHT on the inside world? 2. Have you ever been so scared to make a move that you deliberated for a while, or even too long, before making it? 3. How does FEAR play out in your world? Does it paralyze or crush you? Or does it propel you?4. What big decisions are you making today that you KNOW the answer “inside” but you aren't making them… (employee, expansion, sell, or acquire, grow, invest, etc.) and WHEN are you going to make those decisions? What is going to happen that will allow you to make them? Send us a textWhat if you could hear the same family one year apart and actually feel the shift from chaos to connection. In this powerful “before and after” episode, Jeff revisits Angela Freeman and her two kids, Ruby and Elias. Last year, we met them in Toronto when every day felt like triage — school battles, misunderstandings, and constant fires. One year later, everything looks different.Through sober momentum, the right school fit, and daily co-regulation, the Freemans moved from surviving to thriving. Ruby's attendance shot up to 97%, she jumped three grade levels in math, and even won a science award. Elias found the right adult in his corner, became a student leader, and learned to love sports again. And Angela — now nearing four years sober — reframed advocacy, focusing on training the teacher in front of her child and protecting routines that bring safety and connection home.In This Episode You'll Hear • What the Freeman family's “before” looked and felt like when everything was on fire • How one year of steady sobriety and co-regulation changed the tone of their home • The power of placement as intervention and why “fit” matters more than label • How one trusted adult at school can be the difference between crisis and confidence • Angela's advocacy reframe: stop fighting systems, start training people • Real numbers that prove change — better attendance, higher grades, stronger bonds • Practical home language to keep everyone safe: “cut this, not that”Why It Matters The Freeman story proves you don't need perfect conditions to change a trajectory — just the right fit, one person who gets it, and small daily moves that protect safety and connection. It's a story of resilience, recovery, and real-world success that reminds every caregiver: you're not alone, and small changes stack up fast.

This Day in Legal History: O.J. “Not Guilty”On October 3, 1995, a Los Angeles jury returned one of the most controversial and widely watched criminal verdicts in American history: O.J. Simpson was found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. The trial, which lasted more than eight months, captivated the nation with its blend of celebrity, race, police misconduct, and media spectacle. The prosecution presented DNA evidence linking Simpson to the crime scene, while the defense, led by Johnnie Cochran, argued that Simpson was framed by a racist LAPD, particularly Detective Mark Fuhrman.Cochran's now-famous line — “If it doesn't fit, you must acquit” — referred to a moment when Simpson tried on gloves allegedly worn during the murders, and they appeared not to fit. The defense used that moment to cast further doubt on the prosecution's case. The jury deliberated for less than four hours before acquitting Simpson, prompting strong reactions across racial and social lines. The case exposed deep divisions in American society, particularly around race and policing. It also helped usher in the era of the 24-hour news cycle and reality-style courtroom coverage, with networks like CNN and Court TV devoting extensive airtime to the trial. The not-guilty verdict did not end Simpson's legal troubles: in 1997, a civil jury found him liable for wrongful death and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages.Apple confirmed it has removed the ICEBlock app and similar tools from its App Store following pressure from the Trump administration and Attorney General Pam Bondi. ICEBlock allowed users to report and track the locations of ICE officers through crowdsourced data. Bondi stated the app endangered law enforcement officers and crossed a line by facilitating potential violence. The Department of Justice supported the move, citing safety concerns. This action followed an exposé by right-wing influencer Laura Loomer, who outed the creator of a similar app, Red Dot, and accused the platforms of enabling violence against ICE agents. Loomer also claimed that a recent deadly shooting at a Dallas ICE facility involved the use of such tracking apps.Apple defended its decision, stating it aims to keep the App Store a “safe and trusted” space, and that ICEBlock violated policies by potentially enabling harm to law enforcement. The app's developer, Joshua Aaron, criticized the removal, comparing it to how apps like Apple Maps crowdsource speed trap locations. He argued that his app was protected by the First Amendment and that Apple's action was a concession to authoritarian demands.Tech Giant Apple Bows to MAGA Demands and Removes ICE Tracking AppsOpenAI filed a motion in federal court to dismiss a trade secret lawsuit brought by Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco, accuses OpenAI of deliberately poaching xAI employees to gain access to confidential information about Grok, xAI's chatbot, which the company claims surpasses ChatGPT in performance.OpenAI rejected the allegations, calling them baseless and part of Musk's “ongoing harassment” campaign against the company. In its filing, OpenAI argued that employees are free to leave xAI and work wherever they choose, and that it is within its rights to hire them. The company suggested xAI's legal actions are designed to cover up its internal struggles and inability to retain talent. This case is one of several legal battles unfolding between Musk and OpenAI. Musk has also filed a separate suit accusing OpenAI of abandoning its original nonprofit mission. In turn, OpenAI has countersued Musk for harassment. Meanwhile, xAI has sued Apple, claiming it colluded with OpenAI to suppress competition—an accusation both companies deny and are also seeking to dismiss.OpenAI's legal response characterized xAI's complaint as a distraction from its own failings and a tactic to slow down competitors in the heated race for dominance in the AI industry.OpenAI asks court to dismiss trade-secret lawsuit from Musk's xAI | ReutersU.S. District Judge Michael Simon recused himself from a case challenging President Donald Trump's decision to deploy Oregon's National Guard to Portland. The Trump administration had raised concerns over public comments made by Simon's wife, Representative Suzanne Bonamici, criticizing the deployment as a “gross abuse of power.” To avoid any appearance of bias, Judge Simon opted to step aside, stating the case should remain focused on its core constitutional and legal questions. The lawsuit, filed by Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, seeks to block Trump's use of state National Guard troops, arguing it is illegal and driven by political motives. The complaint alleges Trump is exaggerating protest threats to justify federal overreach and seize control of state forces. The case has been reassigned to Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump appointee.Bonamici, whose district includes much of Portland, made her critical remarks during a press conference with Oregon Governor Tina Kotek. The Department of Justice cited her comments in its request for Simon's recusal, arguing they could undermine public confidence in judicial impartiality.A hearing is scheduled for Friday on Oregon's request for a temporary restraining order. Similar legal challenges are underway in California and Washington, D.C., where federal troop deployments have also faced pushback. A California judge previously ruled Trump's actions unlawful, but that decision is currently on hold pending appeal. The D.C. case remains unresolved.Judge recuses himself from Oregon National Guard case | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Ludwig van Beethoven, a composer of some note. This week, we close with Franz Liszt's transcription (S. 464) of the first movement—Allegro con brio—from Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21. Originally premiered in 1800, this symphony marked Beethoven's formal debut in the genre, and even in its first movement, we hear the young composer testing the boundaries of the Classical form inherited from Haydn and Mozart. The opening chords start in the “wrong” key—a bold harmonic gesture that signaled Beethoven's intent to shake things up, even as he worked within a familiar structure.Liszt, the great 19th-century virtuoso and composer, took on the monumental task of transcribing all nine of Beethoven's symphonies for solo piano. The transcription of the First Symphony, catalogued as S. 464, is part of that sweeping project. These arrangements were not simply meant to showcase Liszt's pianistic brilliance (though they certainly do); they were a way to bring Beethoven's orchestral works into the drawing rooms and salons of Europe—before widespread orchestral performance or recording technology. In Liszt's hands, the Allegro con brio becomes a brilliant piano showpiece, retaining the symphony's rhythmic drive, thematic clarity, and structural ingenuity. He translates orchestral texture into ten fingers with remarkable fidelity, using tremolos, arpeggios, and dramatic dynamic shifts to recreate the energy of strings, winds, and brass. The transcription is virtuosic but never flashy for its own sake—it's an homage from one revolutionary to another.Beethoven's First Symphony bridges the Classical and Romantic eras, and Liszt's solo piano version builds a new bridge, connecting orchestral grandeur to the intimacy of a single performer. It's a reminder of both composers' commitment to pushing musical expression forward. As you listen, you may forget it's just one person at a piano—Liszt makes the entire orchestra sing.We leave you this week not only with Beethoven's bold opening statement to the symphonic world, but with Liszt's brilliant act of translation—a distillation of power, wit, and elegance, all under a single keyboard.Without further ado, Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 – the first movement. Rethinking High-Severity Fires?

High-severity wildfires that burn communities are obviously bad. But what about high-severity fire that burns in the backcountry? Guest Dr. Dick Hutto, Emeritus Professor of biology and wildlife biology at the University of Montana and author of the recently published book A Beautifully Burned Forest: Learning to Celebrate Severe Forest Fire, makes the case that high-severity fire has been unfairly demonized and this fire forms an important and transitory habitat type. Rethinking high-severity fire has policy consequences. Do we invest as heavily in fire risk reduction for wildlands or is funding better spent in and near communities? Do we invest as heavily in fire suppression where fires are burning far from human habitations? And what do we do after fires burn—do we log and replant or leave it be? Listen to hear Dr. Hutto's prescriptions.Want to learn more? Check out Dr. Hutto's website on fire ecology. Support the show

On today's show Torres reacts to THE WILDEST Saturday yet in college football. Kalen Deboer gets the biggest win of his time at Alabama - while Kirby Smart OFFICIALLY has a Bama problem. Plus, James Franklin falls short again - why is there any reason to think things will be different? Finally, Torres wraps with a big one for Ohio State, a crushing defeat for USC and why BYU has emerged as maybe the best story in college football. And finally, minutes after the show ended Arkansas fired Sam Pittman - Torres discusses who should be next with the Hogs. Alabama's thrilling win + Kirby Smart's Bama problem (2:00): Torres opens by discussing the thriller in Tuscaloosa between Alabama and Georgia. He explains why this is the biggest win of Kalen Deboer's career and also why the season has now just begun for the Tide. Also, why Kirby Smart officially has "an Alabama problem" - why can't Kirby Smart figure out the Tide (21:00)? James Franklin melts down again (35:00): From there, Torres reacts to Oregon's win at Penn State and another meltdown from James Franklin. At what point do we have to acknowledge that Franklin just isn't the guy for the Nittany Lions? Then from there, Torres talks big wins for Ole Miss, Ohio State and BYU (51:00)! Sam Pittman gets fired - who's next at Arkansas (1:17:00): After the show went off air, Arkansas made the move and officially fired Sam Pittman. With the Arkansas coach gone, who could be the next head coach for the Hogs. Faith and Legacy of Charlie Kirk The conversation opens with reflections on the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s death (presented here as a political assassination). Speakers emphasize how his passing led to a surge in open conversations about faith, particularly Christianity, in political circles. They describe memorial events where political leaders, including Donald Trump, focused more on God, unity, and faith than on politics. Testimonies highlight Kirk’s role in conservative politics and his attempts to foster dialogue, even with opponents like Van Jones. Unity and Political Dialogue Several anecdotes stress how Kirk worked to bring together people from different camps (e.g., Trump and Elon Musk, Van Jones). His death is framed as a catalyst for renewed hope, encouraging more civil discourse across political divides. Criticism of Media (Jimmy Kimmel/ABC) A significant section critiques Jimmy Kimmel and ABC News for misrepresenting Kirk’s assassin as a right-wing extremist. The speakers argue law enforcement confirmed the shooter was a leftist with Antifa and pro-transgender affiliations. They accuse Kimmel of spreading lies with serious consequences, though they oppose government censorship (via FCC), advocating instead for market accountability. Comedy, Free Speech, and Bias The transcript contrasts Jimmy Kimmel’s humor (labeled partisan and unfunny) with Jon Stewart’s satire, which they describe as genuine comedy—even when mocking conservatives. They argue comedy should target all sides, not just serve as partisan attacks. Dallas ICE Shooting The conversation pivots to another violent attack: a gunman opened fire on an ICE facility in Dallas, killing and injuring multiple people before committing suicide. This attack is linked to rhetoric from left-leaning politicians and activists who have demonized ICE agents. Speakers argue that inflammatory political rhetoric has “real consequences,” drawing parallels to Kirk’s assassination. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Some hauntings never stay behind. They don't belong to a single house, a single street, or even a single family. They follow. They spread. They claim what they want, and sometimes the only thing left behind is ash.  The first house seemed ordinary enough, until a second attic was discovered—hidden, sealed, as if waiting to be opened. Soon after, the sightings began. A tall, gaunt man in outdated clothing walked the halls with deliberate steps, never acknowledging the living, never fading when seen. Friends spotted him in windows. They saw him walking up porches blocks away. He wasn't tied to walls—he was tied to them. When the family moved to West 4th Street, the figure followed. The upstairs hallway was a gauntlet of dread. Boots stomped overhead where no floor existed. A photo frame drifted across a room. A baby pointed to an empty staircase and whispered “Mamaw”—naming the grandmother she had never met. And the violence didn't stop there. Voices whispered, doors locked themselves, bushes grabbed at clothes, and even a turtle-shaped candy dish snapped open as if alive. And then, one by one, the neighborhood burned. Houses, factories, entire blocks reduced to ash. Finally, the house itself caught fire and collapsed. But the haunting didn't end. Because sometimes fire doesn't cleanse—it only frees what was already there. This is the true haunting of East 2nd and West 4th Street. And the tall man?
