Journalist Matthew Wolfe joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his new book Fires in the Night: The Earth Liberation Front, the FBI, and a Secret History of Eco-Sabotage. Wolfe talks about the history of environmental activism, including its rarely discussed bipartisan past, and explains how industry made climate change a Democratic and progressive issue. He reflects on the impact of the Earth Liberation Front, which originated in England and developed another home in Oregon. He also unpacks their three guiding principles, including preventing harm to people, and considers law enforcement's reaction to the radical group's arson tactics. Wolfe analyzes the post-9/11 shift in environmental activism and the significance of the term “eco-terrorism,” which moved from describing harm done to the environment to those taking radical actions in the planet's defense. CannCon and Ghost open the final show before GART week in Deadwood with a Tuesday packed with stories that connect in ways most people are not seeing. An AP investigation with a named whistleblower reveals the DEA knowingly allowed 74,000 fentanyl pills to flood New Mexico between 2023 and 2025 to catch bigger fish while running the "one pill can kill" public campaign at the same time. Bill Pulte walks into ODNI and CNN immediately runs a smear piece while Letitia James attacks his qualifications despite simultaneously backing Jay Clayton, who has identical gaps in intelligence experience. Ghost and CannCon apply the white hat versus black hat framework and explain why neither applies: incentive-based leverage is how this operation actually works. A federal judge blocks the SAVE database cross-referencing Social Security and citizenship data, and CannCon asks the only relevant question: who issues your Social Security number and who determines citizenship status? In geopolitics, Ghost delivers a layered breakdown of Colombia's contested election, tracing the Alex Saab connection to De La Espriella, the Smartmatic globalist pivot of 2014, and why Hispanic neocon Republicans are backing a Maduro ally while publicly opposing Maduro. A viral JD Vance Qatar slight gets debunked with the full video.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Health reporter Diana Bletter joins host Gabriella Jacobs for today's episode. Bletter joins us from her home near Nahariya after speaking with residents across Israel's north about life during an uneasy, on-again-off-again ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon. She describes a region unable to move forward. Residents are exhausted after another disrupted school year, uncertain about what the coming months will bring, yet determined to remain in the communities they call home. She shares stories of hardship and resilience from communities living just kilometers from the Lebanese border. Later in the episode, we move on to discuss a breakthrough in cancer therapy developed by scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, who have engineered nanoparticles that treat aggressive “triple-negative” breast cancer tumors without chemotherapy or drugs. We conclude by diving into a revolutionary method of identifying life beyond Earth by analyzing the diversity of molecular groups, pioneered by Israeli researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Bletter explains how scientists plan to use this method on Eureka, an Israeli spacecraft concept currently in planning. Drone News: Chinese Toy Drones, Walmart x Wing Drone Delivery, Man Fires BB Gun at DFR Drone

    Drone News Update

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2026 4:57

Welcome to your weekly UAS News Update. We have three stories for you this week: the FCC opens the door for Chinese toy drones but with a massive catch, Walmart and Wing are expanding drone delivery, and a Lee County DFR drone gets shot at with a BB gun. Let's get to it.First up this week, the FCC just announced they will allow new models of Chinese "toy drones" to be imported into the US. But before you get excited, the rules are so tight that almost nothing qualifies! To be considered a toy under this new exemption, a drone must weigh no more than 150 grams or 5.29 ounces. It must stay within 100 meters or 328 feet line-of-sight, fly no longer than 10 minutes on a charge, have a 300-foot altitude ceiling, and a speed cap of 10 meters-per-second or 22 mph. Most importantly, it can have NO GPS, no brushless motors, and absolutely no camera or network capability. To put that in perspective, the DJI Neo weighs just 135 grams, which passes the weight test. But it carries a 12-megapixel, 1/2-inch sensor shooting 4K video, uses a wireless link rated for 7 kilometers, has brushless motors, and flies for 18 minutes. So, it completely fails the rest of the requirements! And obviously, drones like the Mini 4 Pro or the new Mini 5 Pro at 249 grams don't even pass the weight check. Next we have a massive expansion in drone delivery that is putting two major operators on a direct collision course. Walmart and their drone partner Wing just announced seven new metro areas for their delivery network, including Memphis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Salt Lake City. Wing has already completed well over one million commercial deliveries, averaging about 23 minutes per drop. The service is free for Walmart+ members and $19.99 for everyone else. The snag here is that Amazon Prime Air is staging operations in Memphis and is actively conducting flights in Phoenix. This means we'll see both aircraft operating in the same airspace.Wing uses a smaller, purpose-built drone that hovers and lowers packages on a tether. Amazon, on the other hand, uses their MK-30 drone, which weighs 83 pounds and carries up to 5 pounds of cargo. Amazon has also had a few incidents this year with the MK-30 reportedly crashing into a construction crane twice, an internet cable, and an apartment building. Last up, The Lee County Sheriff's Office in southwest Florida released footage showing a man firing a BB gun at one of its UAS during a search operation. The drone was flying as part of the department's Drone First Responder program while searching for a bear when its operator spotted a group of men who appeared to be shooting a firearm into a wooded area. The released video shows one man pointing a BB gun at the drone and firing twice. The arrest occurred on Saturday, with deputies using the live feed as real-time evidence to support the arrest.Firing at any aircraft, including drones, is a federal felony under 18 U.S.C. § 32, "Destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities". The penalty runs up to 20 years in prison, a fine, or both. The classification of drones as aircraft is established in 18 U.S.C. § 31(a)(1), which defines "aircraft" as any contrivance invented, used, or designed to navigate, fly, or travel in the air. The FAA has previously confirmed that shooting at an unmanned aircraft falls under Section 32, and federal prosecutors have charged individuals on that basis. And the conversation continues on Post flight where we discuss these stories uncensored in the Premium Community, link is in the description. We'll see you for the live Q&A on Monday. Have a good weekend!https://dronexl.co/2026/06/16/fcc-toy-drone-import-rule-dji-neo-too-capable/https://dronexl.co/2026/06/17/walmart-wing-drone-delivery/https://dronexl.co/2026/06/17/dfr-drone-man-firing-bb-gun-federal-felony/

Battery energy storage fire safety is one of the most urgent permitting challenges facing solar and storage developers in 2026. Mike Nicholas, Energy Storage Specialist and Fire Consultant at Hiller Companies, brings a rare perspective: he built Kern County's entire BESS permitting program from scratch in 2019, when no national standards existed, and now travels the country helping developers, EPCs, and fire departments get these projects to yes.Kern County has the highest concentration of renewable energy and battery storage in California, including the largest active battery storage project in the world at roughly 3.2 GWh. Mike developed a 32-page submission guideline that standardized the permitting process and became a model other jurisdictions are now replicating. After retiring as a fire captain and assistant fire marshal in 2024, he joined Hiller, which represented about 85% of the battery storage clients that went through Kern County permitting. He now works with the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development and American Clean Power to build reference documents and videos for fire safety standardization. Here is what you will learn in this conversation about battery energy storage fire safety:Find out why the Moss Landing disaster changed everything. A fire inside an enclosed former power plant building destroyed an estimated 240 megawatts. An outdoor containerized failure, under current standards, would be contained to the enclosure of origin, a fraction of 1% of that loss. You'll understand why the industry is moving hard toward outdoor containerized deployments.Learn what UL 9540A and the new large-scale fire testing (LSFT) requirement in NFPA 855 (2026) actually require, and why they matter to first responders. You'll hear why the test forces a fully populated unit into a worst-case thermal runaway with suppression disabled, and what it means for containing a fire within the enclosure of origin.Understand what a complete Hazard Mitigation Analysis must include. Find out why a generic OEM document will not pass, and what site-specific elements, from failure modes analysis to emergency response plans for construction, commissioning, and decommissioning, are required under NFPA 855.You'll hear Mike's step-by-step account of what should happen from the moment a fire alarm sounds to the moment the incident command is established. Learn why gas meters, IR cameras, and a fire alarm annunciator panel at the static water tank are critical tools for first responders who may be 15 to 20 minutes from the battery yard inside the site.Find out what developers and EPCs get wrong in permitting. Mike explains why early engagement with the fire department, before land use approval, is not optional, and why hiring a registered design professional who knows NFPA 855 is the difference between hitting your financing deadline and chasing it.With BESS developers racing to lock in safe harbor and stay ahead of tightening FEOC and material-assistance thresholds, permitting delays and moratoria are a real threat to project timelines. Mike describes a shift already happening in California: under General Order 167-C, the California Public Utilities Commission now requires ESS operators to file emergency response plans and produce annual testing and maintenance reports, and Kern County has introduced an annual operational permit tied to emergency contact updates. These requirements are likely to spread nationally.Connect with Mike Nicholas Hiller Companies: https://hillerfire.com/ Support the showConnect with Tim  Clean Power Hour  Clean Power Hour on YouTubeTim on TwitterTim on LinkedIn Email tim@cleanpowerhour.com Review Clean Power Hour on Apple PodcastsThe Clean Power Hour is produced by the Clean Power Consulting Group and created by Tim Montague. We hear live from the ground about what has been unlocked for Kyiv, and later – in our regular segment on life inside Russia – we ask why Vladimir Putin may (or may not) be cracking down on organised crime at a time when public dissatisfaction is reportedly growing and his popularity plummeting.Contributors:Francis Dearnley (Host on Ukraine: The Latest). @FrancisDearnley on X.Joe Barnes (Diplomatic Editor). @Barnes_Joe on X.James Kilner (Russia Analyst). @Jkjourno on X.Senior Producer: Lilian FawcettVideo Producer: Sophie O'SullivanSocial Producer: Tom SteedStudio Director: Meghan SearleExecutive Editor: Francis DearnleyCreated by David KnowlesNOW IN FULL VIDEO WITH MAPS & BATTLEFIELD FOOTAGE:Every episode is now available on our YouTube channel shortly after the release of the audio version. Shawn Mahoney of NFPA's Technical Services team joins Drew for his fourth time on The Fire Protection Podcast, and this one covers a lot of ground before landing on a problem the industry keeps stepping over: construction-site fires. You've seen the headlines. A light wood-frame building goes up mid-construction, and the whole thing is gone, like the Denver complex that took a 238-unit building with it, or the South Park fire in North Carolina that killed two workers. Shawn's point is blunt: we already have the standard to prevent this. It's NFPA 241, the Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, and it's been around since 1930. It's referenced by NFPA 1, NFPA 101, the IBC, and the IFC. "The biggest issue is people just aren't using it," Shawn says. The code isn't broken. Enforcement is. Drew and Shawn dig into why adoption is so piecemeal, what real enforcement looks like (Boston shuts a site down if the fire prevention program manager isn't there), the legislative push after the North Carolina fire, and what the Fire Prevention Program Manager actually has to do day to day. Before that, they preview the NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, including Drew's Tuesday session on AI and fire protection, how AI has reshaped the codes world through NFPA LiNK, CASI, and the new Notebooks feature, and why data centers and small nuclear reactors are creating fire-protection problems in towns that have never seen anything like them. Join Drew for Episode 96 for a real conversation about why the standards we already have only matter if someone enforces them. Topics covered: Inside the NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas AI in fire protection: NFPA LiNK, CASI, and NFPA Insights LiNK Notebooks for codes, checklists, and impairment permits Data centers and small nuclear reactors as emerging fire risks Light wood-frame construction fires and why they're catastrophic NFPA 241 and the enforcement gap The Fire Prevention Program Manager role   Timestamps 00:00 – Introduction 02:27 – Inside the NFPA Conference & Expo 05:35 – AI in Fire Protection 07:46 – Data Centers & Small Nuclear Reactors 09:13 – NFPA LiNK, CASI & NFPA Insights 12:00 – LiNK Notebooks 15:21 – NFPA 241: A Standard Since 1930 16:50 – Why Wood-Frame Construction Fires Are Catastrophic 19:07 – Referenced Everywhere, Enforced Almost Nowhere 20:36 – How Boston Enforces 241 25:54 – The Fire Prevention Program Manager Role 28:33 – Educational Videos & NFPA's YouTube Channels 30:23 – Conclusion

Today's Headlines: Trump's Meet the Press interview derailed when Kristen Welker told him to his face that he lost in 2020, but not before he confirmed on the record that he wants January 6th defendants who assaulted police officers compensated, called them victims of "dirty cops," denied ever promising no new wars, and compared Iran favorably to Vietnam. Coincidentally, a Vietnam veteran filed a lawsuit over the UFC fight night at the White House, arguing it wasn't authorized by Congress and benefits Trump directly since he bought UFC parent company stock while promoting the event, with the Lincoln Memorial scheduled to host fighter weigh-ins, which is a sentence that exists. Trump will also be at the Knicks game inconveniencing everyone with TSA screening and canceled watch parties. On the war beat, Iran fired missiles at Israel for the first time since the April ceasefire, Israel bombed Beirut, oil spiked 3.6%, and Trump responded by calling Fox News to criticize Israel and telling Axios he was phoning Netanyahu because "each of them had their fun" — not the standard framework for analyzing a missile exchange. The May jobs report came in better than expected with 172,000 payrolls added, but markets dipped anyway, prompting Trump to post that "stocks should go up not down, that's the way it was for 200 years," which is not how markets work. And finally, a former Social Security Administration executive blew the whistle on a DOGE-backed plan to mark 2.7 million living people — citizens, permanent residents, teenagers, senior citizens — as dead in federal databases to make life impossible for immigrants and funnel them into Social Security offices where they could be arrested, which didn't go through, though last year officials did successfully file 6,000 people into the Death Master File, some of whom had to physically show up to prove they were alive. A forest lookout sits alone in a glass tower at 2AM and spots flames crowning two distant pines — a fire only he can see. By dawn there's no smoke, no ash, no scorched earth... and no fire at all. From phantom flames that burn and vanish to the burned Bigfoot pulled from a Nevada blaze and the UFOs caught streaking through wildfire smoke, tonight we wander into the strange and unsettling things that appear when the forests burn.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/ghostflamesREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/yjwtx7awFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: The author of Frankenstein always saw love and death as connected. She visited the cemetery to commune with her dead mother. And with her lover. (Mary Shelley's Obsession With The Cemetery) *** A girl moves into a new apartment and discovers that a haunting doesn't necessarily have to be frightening. (Ghostly Happenings In My Old Apartment) *** The July 1886 murder at the Shawmut Avenue laundry was so shrouded in mystery that even the victim's name was uncertain. (The Wash-House Murder) *** Ghosts, high strangeness, and even Bigfoot – it appears they may all have something in common, and that would be forest fires. (Forest Fires and the Paranormal) *** How do you explain an experienced lookout reporting a blazing forest fire, only for it to disappear less than an hour later – leaving no trace? He calculated an azimuth with his fire-finder, radioed a two- to four-acre fire to the station fifteen air miles away, and watched it recede and vanish completely within forty minutes, leaving no smoke, no flame, and no charred ground at dawn six air miles out. Supervisors dubbed it the Pilot Peak phantom fire and sent smokejumper aircraft and hotshot crews to circle the ridge for nearly a week without finding a trace, until two months later a thousand-acre blaze on Zena Creek burned in roughly the same location he had reported. From there the episode widens into wildfires laced with the paranormal, beginning with the Curve Fire that struck South Mount Hawkins in the San Gabriel Mountains of California's Angeles National Forest on September 1, 2002, traced to a brittle 1935 wooden lookout tower and rumored to follow a cult ritual, after which hikers reported eyeless animals with hardened flesh and tall shadow figures akin to the Dark Watchers. It moves to the Battle Mountain Complex Fire near Battle Mountain, Nevada on August 6, 1999, where a letter forwarded to the Bigfoot Field Research Organization and a later call to investigator Thom Powell described firefighters capturing a burned, roughly seven-and-a-half-foot creature with a strong equine odor and near-human features. It closes with a July 2014 wildfire at West Kelowna near Vancouver, Canada, where a Castanet news video appeared to show an object shooting from a cloud, and a 2017 sighting by Arthur Frenette in New Hampshire's White Mountains, who watched a ball of fire plunge into Kinsman Ridge ahead of an out-of-control blaze.Next the episode turns to Mary Shelley, who in her 1831 introduction to Frankenstein traced her writing to her literary parents, though her mother, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman author Mary Wollstonecraft, died of puerperal fever days after her birth when Dr. Poignand removed the placenta with unwashed hands. Raised partly at her mother's grave in the St. Pancras churchyard, where she read her mother's work and escaped a strained home after father William Godwin remarried, the teenage Mary met Percy Shelley through the household and, at sixteen, declared love and reportedly first had sex among the tombstones. That fusion of reading, death, and forbidden knowledge surfaces in Victor Frankenstein's graveyard study of decay and in Godwin's 1809 Essay on Sepulchres, which framed visiting the illustrious dead as a form of communion the daughter carried into her novel of a creature assembled from corpses. From there the tone softens with a benign haunting recounted by a woman named Cassie, who moved into a larger, better-kept apartment over Christmas 2018 and lived there three months before moving in with her boyfriend. The internet blinked off repeatedly, cell reception failed in parts of the unit, electrical sockets quit working, bulbs burned out fast, and the shower switched itself on while she was away at classes. One night around one a.m. she and her boyfriend both heard the pitter-patter of bare feet in the kitchen, yet she never felt threatened, and when she left she said goodbye to whatever shared the space with her.The episode closes with the Wash-House Murder, the July 1886 killing of a Chinese laundryman found stabbed fourteen times in his Shawmut Avenue laundry in Boston's South End, his braided queue cut off and the five hundred dollars he had saved for a return to China gone. The victim's name was never certain, printed variously as Bin Chong, Ding Chong, and Wong Kong, and the case drew the Boston Police into a Chinatown governed by rival companies named Moy, Ching, Lee, and Sing. Detectives questioned the violent Moy company leader Ah Moy Chong and brought in New York interpreter Warry S. Charles, but the murder was never solved, and Charles himself was convicted of first-degree murder in 1908 after importing hatchet-armed assassins as a tong leader, leaving four dead in Chinatown.
