I have two guests on the podcast today, and they have made something extraordinary together. The first drew queer Britain into being for sixty years and quietly refused to call any of its art. It paid the mortgage. It was cheaper than being a window cleaner. He published the world's first LGBTQ+ graphic novel in 1983, drew for Gay News, Capital Gay and The Guardian, made safer-sex campaigns through the AIDS crisis, and hung a nineteen-metre banner at Carrow Road for Justin Fashanu. All of which he called work - never art. That guest is cartoonist David Shenton. The artist who finally insisted it was art is Ian Giles. Together they have made Kindly Ease the Tension, David's first ever institutional retrospective. It begins with a small burnt doll, dressed in clothes knitted by a boy in a Lancashire terrace house and thrown into the fire by his father. The doll survived. So did the boy. In this conversation we get into what happens when somebody finally calls your sixty years of work art. We talk about the Duvet of Love; an AIDS memorial David stitched in a bedsit that he never meant to be art. We talk about the trans baton being passed in a moment when many in the gay community have gone quiet. We talk about censorship and the rising conservatism in the arts, the works that have to be shown after hours, the double standard between classical nudity and queer images. And we talk about what intergenerational care actually looks like in practice.  David is seventy-seven and says this retrospective has stretched his horizon by another ten years. Scripture for Meditation John 4 KJV 4 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) 3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. 4 And he must needs go through Samaria. NASB 4 So then, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that He was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing; rather, His disciples were), 3 He left Judea and went away again to Galilee. 4 And He had to pass through Samaria Reflection on Scripture: I find the framing of this chapter interesting. Because the Pharisees knew Jesus had gained many disciples it seems he was forced to leave and additionally forced to travel through Samaria, which we will explore in coming weeks. This is an interesting way to phrase it and it can give an interesting idea for what was an imperative for Jesus. In the strictest sense Jesus did not have to do anything. Jehovah did not have to create the universe or anything else after that. These things are consistent with God's character and therefore God chooses them. The only way that God would not choose those things is if he did not have his current character. With that said none of that makes it a foregone conclusion for what God has to do. Perhaps this is very obvious but it is worth pondering on for a moment.  God is certainly able to determine His guiding ethics and it is far above human understanding to tell God what he has to do. It is something of a ridiculous notion that the Pharisees could force Jesus to do anything. Even when he was on the cusp of being sent to death, Jesus told Peter he could have called down legions of angels to do His bidding and chose not to. There is literally nothing that the Pharisees could have done, that you could do, that I could do, that would force God to do something that He didn't already determine that He should do.  With that said, once God determines to do something, he lays out a plan on what is needed for that to happen, and then he does it. In this episode, Brian welcomes Doug from Oregon for an intense and deeply detailed account of a roadside Sasquatch encounter that took place in February 2006 along Highway 199 between Grants Pass, Oregon, and Crescent City, California.Doug explains how a late-night drive home through the dark, winding canyon near the Collier Tunnel and The Narrows turned into one of the most unforgettable moments of his life when his headlights and orange truck lights revealed a massive upright figure walking along the road.Doug describes the creature as unlike the classic bulky depictions many people imagine. Instead, he saw something towering, lean, powerful, and athletic, with the build of an enormous basketball player.He estimates it stood somewhere around ten feet tall or more, with long arms, massive shoulders, a narrow waist, pronounced musculature, pale gray skin, dark charcoal-gray hair, and orange-red eyes that appeared to catch the light as Doug passed in his 1995 Chevy dually. The creature did not run, panic, or react aggressively. It simply kept walking, calm and natural, as Doug drove by close enough to see its face, body structure, stride, hands, feet, and skin in startling detail.The conversation moves beyond the sighting itself into the emotional aftermath of seeing something so rare and impossible to easily explain. Doug talks about the shock, excitement, fear, and frustration that followed, especially after sharing the story with people who dismissed him or made him feel ridiculed. Over time, encouragement from his wife and conversations with Native friends, outdoorsmen, hunters, and other witnesses helped him become more open about what he saw.He also shares related local accounts from the same region, including sightings near Siskiyou Forks Road, Bluff Creek, Bald Hills Road, the Klamath River, Monkey Creek, and other deeply remote parts of Northern California and Southern Oregon.Brian and Doug also dig into one of the biggest questions surrounding roadside Sasquatch encounters: why would such an elusive creature be seen walking near or on a road? Conservations are calling for the Selwyn District Council to consider a by-law to stop people feeding Kea at Arthur's Pass, something they say can be fatal. It encourages Kea to hang around roads and built up areas, and that is where accidents happen. The Kea Conservation Trust's Renee Habluetzel spoke to Lisa Owen.

A marathon legislative session this week in Columbus produced several measures that we'll be unpacking here to begin the show. We start with what didn't get done: new rules for data centers. That legislation went off the rails over tax abatement. Data centers currently receive a 100% sales tax exemption. Proposed legislation would have reduced that tax break to between 50% and 75%. But many lawmakers, responding to concerns from constituents, say the industry should receive no exemption at all. Property tax relief remains a priority for Ohioans and lawmakers took action during their marathon session to provide help qualifying senior and disabled homeowners. More than 700,000 Homestead Exemption recipients will receive a nearly $500 credit toward their tax bill in January. Voters will decide whether to put photo-identification requirements for in-person voters – already a law in Ohio – into the constitution after lawmakers approved a constitutional amendment for the fall ballot. In a separate measure lawmakers sent to the governor a bill that extends voter ID to those casting votes by absentee/mail-in ballot. Ohio Republicans who say they are concerned about fraud in Medicaid in Ohio passed new regulations but first stripped out a provision that would have denied funding for those who care for sick family members. That provision had sparked spirited protests at the Statehouse. The Cleveland Clinic agreed to a deal with the Department of Justice this week that will end gender-affirming care for minors for at least the next 20 years. Prompted by an investigation into billing irregularities for such care, the agreement would remain in effect even if the current state law prohibiting gender-affirming care would be overturned. The MetroHealth System will not seek recertification of its Level 2 pediatric trauma center in 2027, though it will still treat children through its broader Level 1 trauma center for adults which also can treat minors. It will transfer pediatric cases to University Hospitals, which runs the region's only Level 1 pediatric trauma center, saying it's better for the broader system not to duplicate efforts. UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky entered the season as the consensus number one overall pick and has comfortably at the top of mock drafts, with the Chicago White Sox picking first for the first time since 1977. However, in recent weeks, Fort Worth Christian High School shortstop Grady Emerson and Georgia Tech catcher Vahn Lackey have been gaining ground. Jim explains why he might take Emerson over Cholowsky, while many scouts believe Emerson has a higher ceiling than the 2025 Baseball America College Player of the Year does.
