She has a 13-year career so far, including working with kids and adults with disabilities, in private practice, and in the education system. A passionate mental health advocate and disability ally, Steph is also a big film and TV nerd and loves to overthink even the most basic media portrayal of a thing. She's a mum of a toddler human, an adult cat Myf, and also a bit of a music snob with no right to be. Psychocinematic Podcast - Psychocinematic Podcast was a concept formed back in 2019 when Steph decided she'd like to put her passion for psychology together with her passion for cinema. But as a full-time psychologist working with kids, when was she going to get the time to work on it? Then the pandemic hit... just as she was about to have a baby... suddenly time was limitless! Psychocinematic officially launched in September 2020. But over 2 years later, Psychocinematic is only growing with every episode and has become more than just a passion project. Psychocinematic Podcast is a form of entertainment, education, and a connection point with a community of people who desperately wish to smash mental health and disability stigma and end ableism in media.

In October, we observed Mental Illness Awareness Week. In that time I asked myself, as a society, Are we TRULY AWARE of mental illness? (Spoiler: NOOOOooo!)This month, we take the time to acknowledge and raise awareness of many different conditions we call “mental illness” like Depression, Schizophrenia, ADHD, PTSD, Dementia, Bipolar Disorder and more. However, as I listen to society debate the many pressing issues of our current society, the widespread violence and chaos, or hypothesizing about “what's wrong with Ye?” it strikes me that we do not even have the BASIC language to fully appreciate most mental illnesses. Every day, I hear people use language like "crazy" or "weird" to describe people who are experiencing mental health crises. I hear misuse of words like "bipolar" to describe erratic weather, and a host of other frankly ignorant statements about emotional and mental health. Our culture has long downplayed attention to emotions, despite them being ever-present, resulting in widespread mental health struggles that have yet to even be "named" and identified. Our current system is woefully inadequate to address the realities of how many people need mental health support and treatment. In this episode of MYA, Dr. Alauna breaks down why a Brain, Body, Behavior anatomy lesson is KEY to truly becoming Mental Health Aware! It's Mental Illness Awareness Week, and I hosted a 5k walk in Fort Collins yesterday to raise awareness. I met the most amazing people. We talked about living with someone who isn't willing to accept their mental illness, and the toll that takes on their loved ones. And we've all been there - with a physical illness or injury we haven't wanted to admit! I refused to admit I was sick as a kid and begged to go to school (my brother still laughs about that part!) I got sick in the car and ended up back at home
There have been some steaming piles of hot mess left on our collective doorstep over the last couple of weeks. And hot mess is a euphemism for what this is. Governors Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott (Florida and Texas, respectively but also with no respect) sit atop this steaming pile with their cheap political stunt. These wo duped some of the most vulnerable members of our society - undocumented immigrants - by shuttling them to what they consider wealthier "sanctuary cities" ON OUR DIME. And there were a lot of dimes spent on this. Then there's Brett Favre, the Welfare Queen. Scamming welfare money and essentially snatching it from impoverished people in Mississippi, which is one of the poorest states in the country. Then on a different note, Dr. Stewart leads the conversation with Montoiya Collins and Ariane Graves around Mental Illness Awareness Week and National Depression Screening Day. AND it's the ladies in the building this time!
State of the Arts Episode 96, the Mental Illness Awareness Week Special just released! Poet, short story writer, flutist and one of my besties Sheri Upright joins me for an in-person interview, along with her loving husband who is also my dedicated podcast co-host Derek Upright. In this inspirational new episode I take a dive into Sheri's universe of creativity. A universe she immersed herself in, beginning way back in her childhood. In her earlier years, she was a part of the undefeated East Meadow High School marching band that moved through 5th Avenue in famous New York City parades. For all the years she was a part of the band, they held a dynasty of first place victories against their competitors. One of her poems she shares in this episode is dedicated to this part of her life. In the poem "5th Avenue" she recalls the thrill of the entire experience. Being a stellar flutist, she participated in the New York State Music Association examinations where she nearly reached a perfect score. After graduating from high school as the salutatorian, she attended Hofstra University. From writing for her high school newspaper to a position at Hofstra collegiate magazine The Font, she evolved as a student writer. Her poetry and short stories won several prestigious awards. At Columbia University she took a poetry class as her odyssey as a writer continued. Eventually she completed a Master's Degree at Hunter College in Education. In this moving episode she reads a poem she had shared with her entire high school back when she made her salutatorian speech. The emotion-packed poem is about the transition from childhood to adulthood and the remising of days past. Her poem about the Brooklyn Dodgers, the team her grandfather cheered for, touched my heart on a personal level as they were my Dad's favorite team too. Derek and Sheri share personal, romantic moments as she recounts a piece of work she had attempted to write for him once and as he compliments her on all her inspiring attributes. In a candid conversation she reveals how writing helped her through the difficulties she faced due to her mental illness. So strong, positive, bright and caring is this admirable guest! The most touching episode of State of the Arts awaits to be listened to! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Melanie Brulée is a bilingual singer/songwriter originally from Cornwall, Ontario. She spent much of her 20s living in Australia, where she first picked up a guitar and developed an interest in singing and songwriting. She came back to Canada and quickly established herself on stages and at festivals across Canada and in the United States. She's got two full-length albums out, a French-language album called Débridée, which came out in 2015, and an English language album, Fires, Floods, and Things We Leave Behind, which came out in 2018. As you'll hear in our interview, after some intense touring and hard work promoting that album, Melanie found herself burned out and questioning the direction she was headed in. A step away from music allowed her to focus on other areas of interest, including mental illness and mental health, which took on new importance for her after she learned, long after the fact, that her estranged father had taken his own life. This led her to learn more about mental illness and deal with mental health issues of her own. In conjunction with Mental Illness Awareness Week 2020, Melanie organized a series of conversations about mental health on Instagram Live and released a powerful song and video called “The Mess,” which is a take on an all-too-familiar inner struggle: a showdown between Anxiety and Depression, each fighting for power over its host, leaving THE MESS in the wake. This year, she released another powerful song and video relating to the topic, this time in French, called “Crier.” More information, videos, and music credits: https://wp.me/pdcjXL-83

Did you know that this week is Mental Illness Awareness Week? I know this subject is not talked about very much in the church, but today I want to give voice to it. I am so excited to have Carla Arges on the podcast this week. She is a mental health advocate, and I love that she honestly and vulnerably shares about her struggle with mental illness this week. What I also love is she gives such truth and wisdom. She talks about mental health vs mental illness and compares it to physical health and physical illness. It was very eye-opening to me. She also encourages others to focus on their identity in Christ through Affirming Truths. One of my favorite parts of the episode! I promise you do not want to miss her wisdom. This episode so speaks to Mental Illness Awareness Week. I interview Patty, a soul sister, who, like me, has experienced three different versions of mental illness: Her mom, her sister, and herself. Patty and I talk about mental illness stigma and shame and family dysfunction. We also get very personal with stories of our own bunny holes and what it really means to be resilient and selfish. We share similar feelings of what it's like to be a strong independent caregiver and to fight the fears that come with admitting we all need a little bit of help sometimes. As Patty explained, "I came to realize that, you know, it wasn't my crap. It was just realizing how to do self-care and realizing to look out for myself and realizing that my sister's problems were not my problems and that my mother's problems were not my problems, That was hard and it still is hard because you want to be there for your family members. But at that point, when I was in my own depression, I just couldn't do it. I didn't even tell anybody what was going on with me. You don't want to imagine yourself being there. And I think that was the other thing is that fear of, 'Oh God, is this going to happen to me? Do I have a mental illness? I think I always knew I wasn't, but it's always still there.'" If this episode rings true for you, leave us a comment below and share your story. --------------- A storyteller at heart who built a career in writing, media & marketing, Paolina Milana is grateful for the magic AND the madness she's experienced. Her roots are entangled with mental illness and taking on caregiving roles -- something she has come to realize is not unique to her; rather, it seems to be common on several levels among others, especially the high-functioning women who from the outside looking in seem to have it all together. Madness To Magic brings to listeners stories of real world encounters with what we all experience and yet feel shamed to keep silent. Embracing ALL of us is key to tapping into our own power to make all things possible. Special thanks to the creators of the beautiful instrumental you hear during this podcast - Philippa Dowding & Allister Thompson - Original song “Sarah Tiptoes” from their album BIRCHES. Also love to the guy who's the master behind this podcast's production and audio engineering -- Joseph Dean Edwards.

This week, Anthony and James look at key themes that arose at several conferences from around the globe over the last two weeks: Brexit and how it will impact Mifid II, disillusionment with blockchain, and data quality challenges. 2:00 Shocking, there are major data challenges relating to Mifid II, according to the chairman of the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) Robert Ophéle. Get this: there’s a lot of regulatory arbitrage, the data quality being reported “leaves much to be desired” and they may need to enact “a number of legislative fixes.” https://www.waterstechnology.com/reference-data-data-management/data-governance/3908211/financial-watchdog-mifid-ii-data-quality-difficult 10:30 Another shocker, some exchanges are not quite finding value stemming from their blockchain proofs-of-concept. Fortunately, we have Nouriel Roubini to speak some truth to power. https://www.waterstechnology.com/trading-floor-technologies/3908021/exchanges-still-seeking-blockchain-uses https://www.banking.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Roubini%20Testimony%2010-11-18.pdf 17:00 And the more things change, the more they stay the same: firms still struggle with data quality and data governance, even as they look to explore new tools, such as machine learning, and new streams of information, such as alternative data. https://www.waterstechnology.com/operations/3908456/experts-warn-on-data-quality-for-ai-projects https://www.waterstechnology.com/market-data-data-analytics/data-consumers/3909501/for-buy-side-esg-alt-data-are-necessary-cost-to-recapture-alpha 31:00 From a non-industry perspective, it’s Mental Illness Awareness Week and Anthony relates it back to a new book about Abraham Lincoln. To lighten things up a bit, James recommends some sci-fi books. If you are so inclined, you can donate to MIND, the mental health charity, or the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, which awards grants to those making advancements in the understanding of numerous mental disorders. https://www.mind.org.uk/ https://www.bbrfoundation.org/

Daniel Arnold, is a world-renowned NYC street photographer who has been hailed by Gawker as ‘The best photographer on Instagram,’ by Wired as ‘Instagram’s ultimate street photographer,’ the New Yorker turned over their Instagram feed to Daniel for a week to document activity on the NYC subways, and his work is regularly featured in Vogue as well as The New York Times, just to name a few of his accolades. And in the interest of full disclosure...Daniel also happens to be my cousin. In this marathon conversation Daniel and I take a deep, candid, and unfiltered look at the creative process. We leave no stone unturned and share both of our very honest experiences with both the amazing (i.e. manic) sides of creativity...and we also aren’t afraid to talk about our numerous personal experiences with depression and burnout. I thought this article would be both helpful and timely given that October 7th is the beginning of Mental Illness Awareness Week. If you are dealing with mental health issues, whether or not you work in a creative field like us, know that you are not alone. If you’ve ever felt like your creativity is a calling, a part of your identity, or something you simply must get out of your system in order to feel alive or be considered a productive member of society, you don’t want to miss this conversation. And as soon as you’re done listening (or even while you’re listening), do yourself a favor and look up Daniel’s Instagram page. His photos will literally blow your mind. And I’m not saying that because he’s my cousin....his 200 thousands followers definitely agree with me. When he needed extra cash in March (“I had 40 bucks in my bank account and 10 grand of credit card debt,” he said), Mr. Arnold told his Instagram followers that he would sell 4-by-6 prints of his photographs for $150 each. By day’s end, he was $15,000 richer. In 2012, the gossip website Gawker published an article about how Mr. Arnold had been censored: He had posted a cheeky but artfully composed photo of two topless sunbathers at Fort Tilden beach. Though he had only 1,500 followers at the time, Gawker called his Instagram feed a “stream of brilliantly voyeuristic snapshots of New York City streets.” Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, and the show notes were prepared and published by Elyse Rintelman. The original music in the opening and closing of the show is courtesy of Joe Trapanese (who is quite possibly one of the most talented composers on the face of the planet).
