Pourtant, cette locution n'a aucun rapport avec les trains ni avec les chemins de fer, qui sont apparus bien après la création de cette expression.1. Origine ancienne du mot "gare"Avant l'invention des gares de train au XIXe siècle, le mot « gare » existait déjà en français ancien. Il vient du verbe « garer », qui signifiait à l'origine « prendre garde », « se mettre en garde » ou « protéger ». Le mot « gare ! » était une interjection de mise en garde : c'était un cri pour prévenir d'un danger imminent, un peu comme on dirait aujourd'hui « attention ! ».Par exemple :« Gare au chien ! » signifiait « Attention au chien ! »2. Signification de l'expressionL'expression « sans crier gare » signifie donc faire quelque chose sans prévenir, de façon soudaine, inattendue. Littéralement, cela veut dire « sans avertir », « sans crier alerte ».On pourrait reformuler par :« Il est parti sans prévenir » = « Il est parti sans crier gare. »3. Pourquoi la confusion avec les trains ?La confusion vient du fait qu'aujourd'hui, le mot « gare » est essentiellement associé aux trains et aux transports. Mais cette acception est moderne. Le mot « gare » dans le sens de lieu ferroviaire est un raccourci de "lieu de garage des trains", c'est-à-dire un endroit où l'on abrite, gare ou stationne les locomotives.Cette nouvelle signification est apparue au XIXe siècle, bien après que l'expression « sans crier gare » soit entrée dans la langue courante, ce qui prête parfois à sourire ou à confusion.En résuméL'expression « sans crier gare » n'a rien à voir avec les gares ferroviaires. Le mot « gare » y signifie « attention » ou « mise en garde », comme on l'utilisait au Moyen Âge. Dire « sans crier gare », c'est agir sans avertir, de manière soudaine, sans donner d'alerte. The Towne Crier, founded by Phil Ciganer in the early 70s, has a long history staging folk acts in the Hudson Valley. As a young man, Phil prowled the folk scene in Greenwich Village, a wellspring of American music during the 60s. He initially based his venue in Beekman and has moved twice, most recently to Beacon 11 years ago.  Among the first musicians to play the Towne Crier was Pete Seeger, and this interview contains some great lore about Beacon's favorite late native son. Speaking of which, the Crier will host its annual celebration of Pete's life on May 3, the anniversary of his birth. Moving into the medieval era, we consider the importance of Windermere to the monks of Furness Abbey, and the subsequent use of cargo boats to transport everything from slate and charcoal to limestone and gunpowder. Arriving in the tourist age, we reflect on the remarkable monopoly of the Furness Railway Company, with trains and boats ferrying huge numbers of people on lengthy Lakeland adventures. As we backtrack to historic fords and the River Leven 'dog hole', we learn about the role Windermere played during the two World Wars, before turning to matters more frivolous: the Tizzie-Whizie, the Crier of Claife and the possible genesis of Beatrix Potter's creative world.
