It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection! In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
In a special episode, Greg and Ed interview Kevin Maes in Kevin's own podcast studio on Rama IV. Kevin is a long-time expat in Thailand hailing from Belgium who became entangled in a very unfortunate crime drama and subsequently wrote a book about it called ‘Kingdom of Trials,' which is now available on Amazon. Kevin begins with his Thai ‘origin story,' how he ended up in the Land of Smiles, and more importantly, how and why he fell in love with it. Unfortunately, he eventually was sucked into a drama involving his ex-wife's boyfriend that shockingly ended in the boyfriend's death. Kevin and another friend were charged with murder, and a years-long ordeal would ensue involving the ins and outs of the Thai justice system. Kevin recounts his fears step-by-step, including his shocking (but somewhat heartening) decision to return to Thailand to face the Thai justice process even though he had an opportunity to remain in Belgium safely for the rest of his life. Suffice it to say, both the interview and the book are worth the interest of any expat or serious Thai-phile. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. We also sometimes post on Facebook, you can contact us on LINE and of course, head to our website (www.bangkokpodcast.com) to find out probably more info than you need to know.
In a special episode of the INSEAD Knowledge podcast, we shine a spotlight on a sister podcast series, The Age of Intelligence. Hosted by Theodoros Evgeniou, Professor of Technology and Business at INSEAD, and Tim Gordon, co-founder of Best Practice AI, the series features insightful conversations with notable guests from a range of different fields. Its aim is to look at how AI is rebalancing our world – from disrupting national powers and influencing business competitiveness to impacting individual lives. In this episode, Evgeniou and Gordon speak with computer scientist and MIT professor Pattie Maes. Their discussion centres on Maes' pioneering work in AI and her unique perspective that technology should be used to augment human intelligence, not replace it.

Send us a textIn this harrowing part 2, Aundreah Maes tries to survive as Edwin Lara adds to his victim/survivor count. Lara also starts to make up a bunch of excuses for his actions. Finally, a surprise thief shows up to sprinkle around some more bad vibes as we close the book on this case. “Do you think this is a game?”-- On July 25th, 2016 Aundreah Maes has just finished her shift at the mall in Salem Oregon, when a man armed with a handgun forces his way into her car and tells her to start driving. This man, a cop-in-training named Edwin Lara, is wanted for the disappearance of a young woman, Kaylee Sawyer, in Bend Oregon and is now on the run, killing and car-jacking anyone in his way. The only person able to stop him is the one he expects the least: his own hostage, 19-year-old Aundreah Maes. Today I am joined by Catherine Cartie! Catherine is a watercolor artist, illustrator, and calligrapher based in Fort Worth, Texas. She specializes in licensing custom artwork and watercolor patterns to clothing companies, wedding stationers, interior designers, and other brands across the country. Catherine also loves creating for her online product shop, which consists of original paintings and art prints, silk scarves, notecards, gift wrap, playing cards, and an annual Christmas Card and acrylic ornament collection. She is probably most known for her butterflies. A few years ago, Catherine created a series of watercolor butterfly paintings that resonated with her audience in such a beautiful and unexpected way. To be able to connect with people through sharing their stories of butterflies really made Catherine understand the power that art has to bring everyone together. Those butterflies took on a life of their own and have become a central part of Catherine's brand. When she is not painting or dreaming of new products or pattern ideas, you can find Catherine on the tennis court, at some kind of kid's sporting event, or at her favorite local coffee shop with her friends, and 3 beautifully crazy children, Jack, Elliot, and Maes.Cartherine's InstagramCatherine's WebsiteThe Net

Loneliness has received a lot of attention—especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. In this episode, Rebekka Weidmann speaks with loneliness experts Marlies Maes, Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Marcus Mund, and Susanne Bücker about the definition of loneliness and related but distinct constructs, the rising interest in loneliness, measurement issues, interventions, and more.
Martin Maes is something of a contradiction. On one hand he's an articulate man with a stoical outlook, and on the other he quite simply doesn't do things quietly. Whether it's coming onto the scene as one of the first true-enduro youngsters before eventually delivering on his potential after many years of trying with GT, or getting mired in a doping scandal and beating downhill racers at their own game, there is so much about his career that is exceptional.
Business Advisor Executive and Key Note Speaker with over 25 years of experience, including general management of small to mid-size organizations, corporate development, business operations and strategy. Currently CEO at Maes and Associates, a Southern California based business strategy consulting firm delivering powerful solutions that turn visions into measurable results.
