St. Louis is known for its philanthropic generosity. For many Black-led and Black-serving nonprofits in the region, donors generally don't fund them at the same level as they fund white-led organizations. Fundraising professionals Rachel D'Souza, Shelly Williams and MK Stallings discuss how funding gaps prevent non-profits from growth and how efforts like Giving Black Day can help.

F. Kenneth's Statement: Although art has been a passion since childhood; I stepped away from it for years and pursued writing, in which I'm also a proud Self-Published Author of 9 books, with #10 in the works. In 2018, under the moniker, F. Kenneth Art, I returned to my artistic roots with a newfound passion for my craft. I began studying all aspects of art; both the business and creative sides, and pursued it wholeheartedly. In 2019, I held my first artist exhibition in Clayton, MO and was featured in Urb Arts', "Abstract Pop-Up" Exhibit, curated by Susan Lively. In April, 2021, I was invited by Urb Arts, Owner, MK Stallings to be in the "Balm" Exhibit, curated by Billy Williams. In addition to creating character sketches for books and collaborating with several local entrepreneurs on new projects, I currently strive to become a self-employed artist and studio gallery owner. Poets once had the reputation as prophets. They crafted poems that reflected the culture and truths of their community for listening audiences. Yet, poetry is not typically viewed as a medium for truth but something dead or too insular for relevance. Furthermore, poems that are performed have somehow lost their place in literature. This talk challenges the notion that good poetry is only experienced on paper and seeks to reconnect this literary art to its prophetic, oral history. MK Stallings is an artist who voices his truth through poetry. Founder of arts-based nonprofit UrbArts, MK facilitates youth poetry workshops, coaches poetry slam teams, teaches sociology using poetry as a learning strategy, and advocates for marginalized artists. UrbArts acts as the fiscal sponsor for Brick City Poetry Festival and MK is a key member of the planning committee.
This week, MK Stallings sits down with Erielle Jones and Charles McGill, aka Aries and Oracle. The current first- and second-place VerbQuake champions discuss coming into their own in poetry slam competitions, and how social issues have shaped their work.
