I'll tell you what happened in my career before. Maybe you've been there, too. There's a sponsorship, sometimes a fairly high-profile sponsorship, and I have gotten asked to write it about it in an ad or email…but, there wasn't really a strategy. That is not the way to get the best ROI, the most juice for the squeeze.Sponsorships truly succeed when they tie into the value proposition of the brand. So this lesson in a recent podcast guest application really grabbed my attention – “Maximize brand awareness by going beyond the ‘logo slap' sponsorship”To hear the story behind that lesson, along with many more lesson-filled stories, I talked to Rebecca Biestman, Chief Marketing Officer, Guild [https://guild.com/].Guild raised $175 million in a Series F funding round in 2022, at a $4.4 billion valuation. Wellington Management led the financing, and Oprah Winfrey participated in the round, along with other backers. Biestman manages a team of 70 in the marketing department.Lessons from the things she madeMaximize brand awareness by going beyond the “logo slap” sponsorshipEmbrace new tech that helps drive your brand strategyTo build a brand that lasts, consider rebranding a team sport Be prepared to step up when the unexpected happensThe best candidate for a role isn't always the one who has done it beforeMaking a difference and building something great aren't mutually exclusiveDiscussed in this episodeJoin us for MEC050: Let AI Agents Market For You [https://join.meclabsai.com/ai-agents] on Tuesday, May 13th at 2 pm EDTCreative Marketing: Does it all make sense? Why are energy startups missing out on funding despite rising power demand

GREY Journal Daily News Podcast

Energy consumption increases globally, with global power demand rising by 2.2% last year, surpassing the average annual increase for the past decade. Predictions indicate that this trend will continue due to the scaling of AI platforms, rising demand in emerging economies, and increased use of air conditioning. Despite this growing demand, global investment in energy startups reached its lowest level in four years in 2024, starting off slow in the first quarter. However, notable investment activity occurred in April, including a $258 million Series F round for Mainspring Energy and a $500 million investment for Silicon Ranch's solar projects. Base Power secured $200 million for battery backup solutions. Investment in energy efficiency and infrastructure increased, exemplified by The Stargate Project, which plans to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure over four years, with $100 billion designated for immediate initiatives. The energy startup sector shows potential for a rebound, as historical trends indicate capacity for large investments, particularly in fusion technology.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. It's been more than a minute since Tesla went public, but the EV company was inescapable on TechCrunch this week. From layoffs to pricing changes and more, it was a week dyed deeply in Tesla colors so we had to chat through the latest. But that was just one element of what we got into on Equity this week. We also dug into Mary Ann's reporting about Ramp's latest round — and up valuation — that fit neatly next to Rippling's own impending fundraise. If you are handling money, it's a good time to be a startup. The team also dug into Cherub, which wants to connect investors and founders, Maven Ventures' consumer investing push, and touched on what Mercury is up to. All told, we were fortunate to have Kirsten Korosec along with us this week given the sheer volume, and diversity of transportation news to chew through, especially as it relates to Tesla.Equity is back tomorrow with a special interview between Mary Ann and Notable Capital's Hans Tung, so stay tuned! Until then, hit play and let's have some fun.Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast and posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. REGULATING AI - Discussing the Implications of Readily Available AI with the CEO of SingleStore, Raj Verma, Part 2

This episode continues the conversation with Raj Verma, CEO of SingleStore - a Series F startup that provides a cloud-native database built with speed and scale to power real-time applications.Eric and Raj discuss the implications of openly available AI. On one hand, a ton of good will be brought into the world. On the other hand, every new technology comes with its caveats and even the simplest things like booking a flight online can lead to malicious actors scamming people out of their hard earned money.Eric recalls his work with an executive at OpenAI, where he had a sneak peak into what we now know as ChatGPT, and their team was by no means blind to the possibility of their tech being used for the wrong reasons. The team at OpenAI had factored this in, and are cognizant of the fact that they are responsible for safety regulations for their software.Raj speaks on AI regulation, and believes that the biggest governments in the world will regulate AI usage appropriately, as none of them are interested in AI-supported crimes. This doesn't mean that all regulation will be the same, as global superpowers have differentiating viewpoints in their social and governing philosophies, which could cause problems down the line.Change happens faster than we think. Raj uses the analogy of how fast cars replaced horses in the early 1900's, when talking about how quickly the AI revolution can take place. Predictions are typically made drawing comparisons to the past, but as it's been proven time and time again - the future comes quicker than we can possibly imagine, and Raj sees a similar pattern with how AI is disrupting us right now.Tune into the full episode to learn more wisdom about the upcoming AI revolution!HIGHLIGHTS:00:00 What's the true value of AI?03:48 Does tech democratization lead to good or evil?07:02 AI Regulations on social media 09:53 The potential destructiveness of AI12:41 GameStop and Silicon Valley Bank 16:59 Change happens faster than we thinkConnect with Raj - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rajvermaceo/Don't forget to subscribe to the Chaos to Clarity Podcast for more invaluable episodes to help you grow your business and stay ahead of the curve! DEMOCRATISING DATA - Using AI To Leverage Data with the CEO of SingleStore, Raj Verma, Part 1

In this episode, Eric is joined by Raj Verma, CEO of SingleStore - a Series F startup that provides a cloud-native database built with speed and scale to power real-time applications.Raj speaks on their journey of finding the problem in their market. They saw how inefficient it is to navigate between multiple data platforms and that data is often too fragmented and spread between too many sources to ensure quality conclusions due to there being too many points of failure. Big tech has a huge data advantage over mid-market competitors due to the fact that leveraging data is super expensive. SingleStore is on a mission to democratize data utilization in smaller companies, which also reflects in their client base - SaaS companies between $10-300 million ARR see the most benefit from implementing SingleStore, and their best performing segment are go-to-market tools, which is a motion that historically doesn't rely on data as much as other parts of the business.Generative AI is changing the way companies utilize data. Raj mentions that in the digital age, generative AI has been in the making for decades. He sees AI being discussed in 3 buckets - first one being that it will help automate easy work, second being that hard tasks will become easy, and third being that the impossible will become possible. He predicts that 50% of software jobs will become automated. Raj is fascinated by what it means for the impossible to become possible. He believes that science will be the sector that will see the most growth from AI, and he speaks on how AI is changing the way we approach medicine. Tune into the full episode to learn more about how SingleStore is democratising data!HIGHLIGHTS:00:00 What does SingleStore do?02:06 The problem SingleStore saw in the market05:38 How agile teams suffer due to inefficient data tools09:21 What keeps incumbency in place? 12:47 How early stage startups can leverage their data16:42 How generative AI is changing the world21:40 AI implications in medicine Connect with Raj - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rajvermaceo/ Don't forget to subscribe to the Chaos to Clarity Podcast for more invaluable episodes to help you grow your business and stay ahead of the curve! I explore how GetYourGuide, a company that started in a dorm room, grew into a $2 billion enterprise, selling over 80 million tickets to travelers seeking unique experiences, such as private tours of the Vatican Museum. We look at the travel experience market as an untapped online frontier, previously dominated by offline transactions and now worth $300 billion. Tao recounts the founding story of GetYourGuide, from its original concept as a peer-to-peer platform for tour guides to pivoting towards professional activity operators, marking the beginning of its success. We also touch upon the company's recent $194 million funding round and discuss the increasing trend of travelers preferring experiences over material possessions. (13:56) Adapting Culture and Surviving Crisis This chapter begins by exploring the integration of culture with changing strategies, emphasizing the importance of a consistent culture that supports shifts without causing disruption. I discuss the development of authentic core values by sharing a story of initial failure and eventual success through a reflective process with the leadership team, highlighting the key role of core values in determining who fits within a company. The conversation then pivots to the impact of COVID-19, recounting the immediate challenges and strategic decisions made in response to the pandemic, including the choice not to lay off staff and to continue investing in the future. The chapter concludes with an optimistic outlook, noting a strong recovery and promising prospects for the years following the initial crisis. (21:10) Travel Industry This chapter focuses on how businesses adapted during the pandemic, particularly addressing the balance between long-term planning and immediate operational needs. We touch on innovative measures like salary sacrifices for stock options and government-subsidized work hour reductions. We highlight the insights gained from having co-founders with molecular biology backgrounds, which helped us stay ahead in understanding the virus's impact on the travel industry. Additionally, we discuss the acceleration of digitization due to the pandemic, using the QR code's newfound ubiquity as a prime example. This digital shift significantly impacted operations, especially for our partnerships with historical attractions and museums, which had to quickly adapt to digital ticketing and queue management. Lastly, we examine the surge in travel as restrictions lifted, debunking the idea that the spike was merely 'revenge tourism' and noting the persistent trend towards domestic tourism. (31:53) Board Members, Funding, Global Network Effects This chapter focuses on the strategy behind assembling a board of directors for a private company, highlighting the importance of selecting members who bring expertise and accountability. We explore the company's recent Series F funding round, which includes a mix of cash and a revolving credit facility, designed to provide financial flexibility. The significance of raising funds during a period when many tech companies struggle is discussed, emphasizing the company's steady growth and prudent financial practices that have led to a successful up-round without resorting to complex financial instruments. I share insights into the deployment of the raised capital, underlining the company's investment into a technology-driven flywheel model, which encompasses building customer audience, enhancing the product, and acquiring a diverse inventory to support their mission of expansion, particularly in the U.S. market. (40:48) Travel and AGI Building Connections This chapter begins with reflections on the value of a connected world and the peace dividend concept, emphasizing how less military spending can boost investment in other sectors like technology and education. I examine the impact of decoupling on trade efficiency and express hope for the role of travel in fostering empathy and cultural understanding. I share insights on the potential of AGI and chat GPT to transform operations in various fields, including machine learning, translation, customer service, and personalized recommendations. I highlight the impressive capabilities of AI in instant translation, which can facilitate global communication and commerce. Lastly, I recount the startling experience of near-zero revenue during COVID-19 and discuss how resilience led to recovery. To keep up with these themes, I encourage listeners to use GetYourGuide for their travels and connect with me, Tao Tao, on LinkedIn. Links: Playing to Win: How Strategy Really WorksThe Mind of the StrategistAmazon's Leadership PrinciplesNetflix's Core ValuesDelivering Happiness Turning on the Lights at the VaticanGetYourGuideEpisode URLMichael Koenig on LinkedIn

The business is already majority owned by non-Chinese investors.- The company shares do give ByteDance founders control over the business, perhaps that needs to change.- ByteDance produced $61b in 2022 revenue. Tiktok was $10b in 2022. (...per my sources).- ByteDance closed a $100m Series F at a $220b valuation in Mar 2023, a 22% increase from its last round in Dec 2020. ByteDance is the most valuable pre-IPO stock globally. - If data security is the issue ... how does changing the cap table solve a data security issue?- Oracle managing the app, reviewing code, and publishing to the app stores appears to be a much better data security solution, in my opinion.- Early investors include Susquehanna Asia Investments, DST Ventures, Sequoia China. Other notable investors include General Atlantic, Softbank, NEA, KKR, Tiger Global, Carlyle, Coatue.- The illogical divesture demand by the White House leads us to believe this whole thing is political farse … similar to how Chinese companies were to be delisted from US stock exchanges which ended up never happening. 02:54 | T-Mobile buys Ka'ena Corporation, a cell service provider, for $1.35b; 39% cash and 61% stock- Ka'ena includes brands Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile- T-Mobile is acquiring the brands' sales, marketing, digital, and service operations- T-Mobile will; use its supplier relationships and distribution scale to help the brands to grow and offer competitive pricing and greater device inventory to more U.S. consumers seeking value offerings and leverage Mint's industry-leading digital D2C marketing expertise (aka Ryan Reynolds) as part of its broader portfolio to reach new customer segments and geographies- Ryan Reynolds, the Canadian actor, owns a 25% stake in Mint Mobile; analysts estimate that Reynold's acquired the shares at a $15m valuation, Reynold's shares are estimated to be valued at $150m to $200m04:31 | OpenAI, the AI company, releases GPT-4, a multimodal AI- GPT-4 API pricing...Prompt (questions that the user types in) = $0.03 per 1,000 “prompt” tokens (about 750 words)...Completion (words that GPT-4 responds with) = $0.06 per 1,000 “completion” tokens (again, about 750 words)...Tokens represent raw text; for example, the word “fantastic” would be split into the tokens “fan,” “tas” and “tic”- Early adopters using GPT-4...Stripe: GPT-4 to scan business websites and deliver a summary to customer support staff...Duolingo: GPT-4 built into a new language learning subscription tier...Morgan Stanley: GPT-4 powers a system that'll retrieve info from company documents and serve it up to financial advisors...Khan Academy: GPT-4 as an automated tutor- OpenAI worked with Microsoft to develop a “supercomputer” from the ground up in the Azure cloud, which was used to train GPT-4- OpenAI has a $29b valuation as of Jan 202306:25 | Large cap raises for the week- Anthropic | $300m Series C, $4.4b valuation- Scroll | $50m Series C, $1.8b valuation- Character | $200m Seed, $1.0b valuation- Humane | $100m Series C, $850m valuation- Ring Therapeutics | $87m Series C, $602m valuation07:24 | Pre-IPO stock performance for the week- Pre-IPO stocks down 0.81% outperforming S&P by 3.6%- YTD OpenSea and Kraken still lead the group up 36% and 21% respectfully, Chime is down YTD 31%, Airtable and Stripe are both down 21% YTD- last week Chime was up 0.56% to lead, Epic Games was down 7.5% and Stripe was down 5.6%AG Dillon & Co venture capital funds...- AG Dillon SpaceX Pre-IPO Stock Fund

“The world is changing. Technology is driving economic proliferation around the world. With that increase in technology at scale comes tremendous risk”, says Shawn. Head of Insurance Shawn Ram, shares his transition from Aon to joining the founding team of rapidly expanding Coalition, the San Francisco-based cyber insurtech. “What really drives our value is the fact that our insurance is active. Alongside our cyber product, we provide active risk assessment”, explains Shawn. Having recently raised $250m in a Series F funding round, led by Allianz and supported by Kinetic Partners, Shawn shares the Coalition's approach to data collection and assessing policyholders' vulnerabilities.    “We track how often there's vulnerabilities in software, what technology isn't patched appropriately, any lookalike domains or any compromise. It's the same view generally that an adversary would have.” With Coalition currently establishing a UK presence and with further expansion in to APAC planned for 2023,  Shawn outlines how the business is aiming to double its headcount over the next 12 months as well maintain its culture amidst scaling. “We desire to remain humble, we sweep the floors, we're authentic”, says Shawn.  “When you build a new operation where the individuals that are being hired in country have no background, no experience with the coalition culture, it's critical that you get that right.” Shawn gives an insight in to Coalition's ‘remote-first' culture, the opportunities for high-performing talent and his experience of transitioning from large corporate to tech start-up. “There's something that happens in a start-up environment. There's no alternative, it's like success or failure. There's no middle ground. As a company or as an individual, it breeds a different level of commitment, diligence and vigour.” Shawn concludes with offering advice to anyone seeking to join a tech-enabled business. “Evaluate the mission, evaluate the vision, evaluate the people. The people you surround yourself with are critical. And be honest with yourself.  Do you have the attributes needed to grind in a start-up environment? Are you comfortable with the pace and speed in which it operates?"
