Property taxes generate more than $20 billion dollars in tax revenue in Ohio each year. They help pay for public schools, emergency services, libraries and parks. Lately, some home owners are feeling financial pressure from rising property taxes across the state. This is directly connected to property valuations that have gone up, including by an average of 32% in Cuyahoga County. This pressure is part of the reason some people are calling to reform or even abolish Ohio's property tax. Others think people simply shouldn't be taxed on property they've already paid for. The group leading the property tax ban effort, Ax Ohio Tax, failed to collect enough signatures in time to get their initiative on this November's ballot but organizers are already looking ahead to 2027. If property taxes are reformed or completely eliminated, what would happen to the services that rely on that source of funding to operate? Would schools, police, and parks see funding cuts, or could there be an alternative source of revenue? These were some of the questions that were posed at the latest "Sound of Ideas Community Tour," which was held at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Panelists representing a wide variety of perspectives, spoke with a live and lively audience about everything from why they believe property taxes should or shouldn't be reformed, to how school funding operates, to the value of parks to the general public. This episode tackles two listener questions with significant implications for cattle producers. The first explores how increasing cattle carcass weights affect corn demand and feed efficiency. The discussion estimates that an average increase of 36 pounds in carcass weight requires roughly 257 additional pounds of corn per animal, adding up to a substantial amount nationally, although it represents less than 1% of total U.S. corn use. Despite declining feed efficiency and average daily gain as cattle get larger, feeding cattle to heavier weights can remain profitable because a greater proportion of the added weight ends up in the carcass rather than in non-marketable tissues. The hosts explain that heavier cattle help offset the effects of historically low cattle inventories by increasing total beef production without requiring more animals. This additional production helps meet strong consumer demand and moderates beef prices that might otherwise be even higher. The second topic focuses on leasing cropland for pasture when improvements such as fencing, water infrastructure, and forage establishment are required. Panelists emphasize that successful pasture lease agreements begin with clear communication and should account for who pays for improvements, how long the lease will last, and what happens to infrastructure when the lease ends. They note that arrangements can vary widely, from landowners paying for materials to tenants absorbing costs in exchange for longer lease terms or reduced rental rates. Written agreements and careful financial planning are strongly encouraged to protect both parties and ensure that long-term investments can be recovered. Overall, the episode highlights how thoughtful economic analysis and upfront communication can lead to better decisions throughout the cattle production chain.

10 years before the catastrophic train derailment and chemical disaster in East Palestine, Ohio, one of the deadliest rail disasters in North American history took place in the Canadian town of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec. On July 6, 2013, an unattended freight train that had been parked on the tracks overnight began to roll downhill and gather alarming speed as it careened towards the city center of Lac-Mégantic. The train, which was operated by Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railway and carrying over 2 million gallons of crude oil, derailed around 1:15 AM. The resulting explosions and fire killed 47 people and destroyed over 40 buildings, obliterating a large portion of the downtown area and prompting mass evacuations. 10 years before the catastrophic train derailment and chemical disaster in East Palestine, Ohio, one of the deadliest rail disasters in North American history took place in the Canadian town of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec.On July 6, 2013, an unattended freight train that had been parked on the tracks overnight began to roll downhill and gather alarming speed as it careened towards the city center of Lac-Mégantic. The train, which was operated by Montreal, Maine, and Atlantic Railway and carrying over 2 million gallons of crude oil, derailed around 1:15 AM. Eric shares his own evolving journey: coming out as bisexual at 14, stepping back into the closet after a painful family response, and gradually, over the last several years, coming more fully into his queer, polyamorous, and autistic identity. A central theme is masking: the exhausting, sometimes invisible labor of performing neurotypicality and heteronormativity in order to feel safe. The panel explores how masking operates differently depending on context. Race, religion, socioeconomic status, and gender all shape how much masking is required and how dangerous unmasking can feel. Kristen speaks powerfully about growing up with an unnamed sense that something was "wrong" with her, and how evangelical Christianity offered both structure and suppression. Savant describes the specific neurological experience of unmasking, what he calls "the peanut butter feeling," and how musical theater taught him to mask with almost military precision. Jill is candid about the role alcohol and substances have played in her own mask, and how her whiteness, cisness, and socioeconomic privilege have buffered her from some of the costs other panelists face. Eric describes experiencing his first autistic meltdown after years of not recognizing the depth of his own burnout. The conversation also touches on the practical, embodied work of unmasking. Kristen shares a therapist's suggestion to draw your masking self versus your unmasked self, and talks about learning to notice somatic cues: face pain from performative smiling, shallow breathing, tense shoulders. Eric recommends Devon Price's work and describes how 145 consecutive days of meditation have been part of his recovery. Savant offers the insight that his "observer brain" was always turned outward and never inward, and that true unmasking means turning the mirror around. The panel closes with single-sentence affirmations to a younger self or to anyone earlier in their journey: Eric: "Just be completely you and don't worry about your mother." Kristen: "Your safe people are out there. Don't give up." Jill: "There's nothing wrong with you. You're not broken, and you don't need to be fixed." From June 4, 2016: This week, the Brookings Institution held an event on a new Brookings report on implementation of the Iran Deal: The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) adopted by Iran and the P5+1 partners in July 2015 was an effort not only to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons but also to avert a nuclear arms competition in the Middle East. But uncertainties surrounding the future of the Iran nuclear deal, including the question of what Iran will do when key JCPOA restrictions on its nuclear program expire after 15 years, could provide incentives for some of its neighbors to keep their nuclear options open.In their Brookings Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Series monograph, “The Iran Nuclear Deal: Prelude to Proliferation in the Middle East?,” Robert Einhorn and Richard Nephew assess the current status of the JCPOA and explore the likelihood that, in the wake of the agreement, regional countries will pursue their own nuclear weapons programs or at least latent nuclear weapons capabilities. Drawing on interviews with senior government officials and non-government experts from the region, they focus in depth on the possible motivations and capabilities of Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates for pursuing nuclear weapons. At the 39th Constitutional Convention of the United Auto Workers (UAW) in Detroit, Michigan, union delegates debated and affirmed the aggressive direction the UAW has taken under current President Shawn Fain, supporting pushes to increase shop-floor militancy, support new organizing efforts, and take stronger stances on the political crises working people face today. Among the major developments to come out of the UAW Constitutional Convention was a historic vote to divest the union from Israel bonds, which provide financial support to Israel's government as it continues to wage a US-backed campaign of genocidal violence and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians.
