On April 7, 2021, a man showed up to a property in Rock Hill, South Carolina and took the lives of six people. Robert and Barbara Lesslie had been taking care of their grandchildren, Noah and Adah, when former NFL player Phillip Adams shot them to death. He also killed two HVAC workers on the property, James Lewis and Robert Shook. Adams' actions have been attributed to the head trauma from his time playing football - and after his death, he was diagnosed with Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly referred to as CTE, and it is believed this is what lead to his actions. When you talk about basketball icons who changed the game, Coach Semeka Randall Lay belongs in that conversation. From her Cleveland roots to the bright lights of Knoxville, and now leading the charge at Winthrop University, her story is one of grit, greatness, and growth. In this episode of SportsLifeTalk's You Got Next, hosts Head Coach KT and B Jones sit down with “Hard to Handle Randall” — one of the fiercest competitors ever to wear the orange and white — to unpack her journey from backyard battles to championship glory, from playing under the legendary Pat Summitt to carving her own legacy as a head coach.Semeka Randall's story starts in Cleveland, Ohio, where her competitive spirit was forged in a neighborhood game called booty — a no-mercy test of toughness that left no room for fear. That same fire carried her to high school dominance, becoming a two-time Ohio Ms. Basketball and Parade All-American, before committing to play for the University of Tennessee. At Tennessee, Randall became part of one of the most iconic trios in women's college basketball — the legendary “Three Meeks” alongside Tamika Catchings and Chamique Holdsclaw. Together, they brought unmatched energy, intensity, and championship DNA to the Lady Vols, guided by the late, great Coach Pat Summitt.Randall's defensive ferocity and emotional leadership made her a fan favorite — and a nightmare for opponents. Whether she was racking up eight steals in a rivalry game or saluting Geno Auriemma after a dagger jumper, she played with pure heart and swagger. “I just wanted to beat his butt,” she laughs. After hanging up her sneakers, Coach Randall transitioned to the sidelines — and like any true competitor, she started from the bottom. She laughs about her rookie coaching mistakes (“I forgot the game tape once!”), but those early days taught her resilience, patience, and purpose. As an assistant at Michigan State, she helped guide the Spartans to a national championship appearance, solidifying her reputation as a brilliant recruiter and motivator. Her journey would take her through several programs before finding a true home at Winthrop University.Today, Coach Randall Lay is redefining what it means to build a program from the ground up. Since taking over at Winthrop, she's delivered the school's first winning season in a decade and is determined to restore pride to Eagle Nation. Her leadership mantra? “Why not Winthrop?”She's building more than a team — she's creating a culture. One rooted in discipline, defense, and belief. “I'll go through a brick wall for my student-athletes,” she says — and her players would do the same for her. With her contract extended through 2028, the best is yet to come.

What happens when the leaders in your hometown turn a Black neighborhood into a dumping ground? In part 2 of our conversation, environmental scientist and advocate Kibri Hutchison Everett takes us back to my hometown of Rock Hill, South Carolina, to confront the legacy of the so-called “Trash Pile.” What began with the placement of unlined landfill in the heart of a Black neighborhood, the Trash Pile stands as a stark example of how racist policy choices create sacrifice zones in the United States. It is now a neighborhood with no water, sanitation, or city services, despite being within city limits.Kibri shares how this desolate community still bears the scars of contamination, land loss, and disinvestment, and why she purchased a parcel of land there to transform it into a test site for community science and grassroots advocacy. Together, we explore how pollution, policy, and poverty intersect, and how data, organizing, and courage can shift the fight from environmental injustice to environmental and economic liberation. This is not just a story about Rock Hill, South Carolina or even the plight of Black communities in the South. It's about the structures that allow entire communities to be written off, and the movements rising to reclaim land, dignity, and a livable future.Connect with Kibri EverettLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kibri-hutchison-everett-646b051b3/Instagram: @the.enviro.vegan and @key.environmental.consultingWebsites: www.keyenvi.com & www.palmettofutures.orgBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-environmental-justice-lab--5583745/support.Connect with our Environmental Justice Lab community: Instagram: @envjusticelab YouTube: @envjusticelab Email: theenvironmentaljusticelab@gmail.comDon't forget to subscribe and rate the podcast wherever you listen! What does it mean to fight for environmental justice when the very language of justice is under attack? In this first episode (of a 2-part series), I talk with environmental scientist, small business owner, and consultant Kibri Hutchison Everett about the fight for environmental justice. We trace her journey from growing up in Rock Hill, South Carolina (my hometown), to working in federal environmental data analysis, and ultimately to founding her own company to support communities on the frontlines of pollution and disinvestment. We talk about her work with the HBCU Environmental Justice Technical Collaborative, and Kibri speaks candidly about the realities of working with marginalized communities, and calling environmental racism what it is, even when federal agencies and political leaders try to erase the term. Together, we unpack how industries target poor Black, Brown, and rural communities, how changes in White House can roll back decades of progress overnight, and why grassroots organizing and data sovereignty remain critical tools for resistance. This is not just a policy discussion; it's a call to action. Tune in to learn how environmental justice plays out on the ground and why vulnerable communities are still forced to fight for clean air, clean water, and basic dignity.Resources: HBCU Environmental Justice Technical CollaborativeArticle: Environmental Justice in an Era of Federal RollbacksHBCU EJ Screening ToolJustice40 Awards TrackerConnect with Kibri EverettLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kibri-hutchison-everett-646b051b3/Instagram: @the.enviro.vegan@key.environmental.consultingWebsites: www.keyenvi.comwww.palmettofutures.orgBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-environmental-justice-lab--5583745/support.Connect with our Environmental Justice Lab community: Instagram: @envjusticelab YouTube: @envjusticelab Email: theenvironmentaljusticelab@gmail.comDon't forget to subscribe and rate the podcast wherever you listen! Investigative journalists — Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — broke major news this past Tuesday with the announcement that Myrtle Beach pastor JP Miller has been accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at his father's church, Cathedral Baptist Church (formerly All Nations Church), in 1998 and again sexually assaulting her in 2023. The lawsuit was filed by Jane Doe No. 1 against John-Paul Miller, Reginald Wayne Miller, and their churches, including Solid Rock Ministries. Mandy and Liz share details of the lawsuit while connecting the dots on what was happening in JP's life at the time. Plus, they sit for an interview with Rock Hill attorney Randy Hood of McGowan, Hood, Felder and Phillips law firm, who is representing Jane, to learn more about Jane's case and what the world of litigating institutional child sexual abuse looks like. Hood is no stranger to suing churches on behalf of sexual assault victims. He also represents clients in the case against Morningstar Fellowship Church in Fort Mill, South Carolina. On Tuesday, Mandy and Liz also broke the very important news that attorney Mark Tinsley from the Murdaugh Murders trial — aka Zero Dark Tinsley and Tiger Tinsley — is also representing Jane in her case against the Millers. Also on the show, JP Miller appeared in Magistrate Court on Wednesday for a hearing related to seven of his cases against protesters and … well, he did a terrible job, as expected… The premium extended episode includes a play-by-play featuring the most pertinent highlights.
