Obie Anthony lost 17 years of his life. Upon his release, he founded Exonerated Nation and has advocated for new legislation to change life for the justice impacted. Exonerated Nation amplifies the leadership, determination, and tenacity of exonerees. We believe that exonerees are uniquely positioned to challenge injustice, transform the systems of oppression which cause wrongful imprisonment, break down the stigma associated with incarceration, and humanize communities affected by criminalization. About Obie... Obie Anthony was sentenced to life without parole for a murder he did not commit when he was 19 years old. California incarcerated him for 17 years. When he was exonerated and released in 2011 Obie didn't even have identification – no social security card or birth certificate. After seventeen years in prison, he didn't know what to write on his resume, how to land a job, or even how to use a cell phone. He had to learn on his own how to establish his life again. That's when he dedicated himself to supporting other exonerees to meet their basic needs after release. Obie was instrumental in the passage of California Assembly Bill No. 672 (nicknamed and cited as “Obie's Law”). The bill requires the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to assist exonerees with transitional services, including housing assistance, job training, and mental health services. In 2016, Obie founded Exonerated Nation, and is committed to transforming the experiences of exonerees after release, and building a community that can provide safety, stability, and healing to wrongfully convicted Californians. https://exoneratednation.org/ (Exonerated Nation Website) Connect with Obie... https://www.facebook.com/exoneratednation/ (Facebook) https://www.facebook.com/exoneratednation/ https://www.instagram.com/exoneratednation/ (Instagram) @exoneratednation https://www.linkedin.com/in/obie-anthony-56989649 (LinkedIn) https://www.linkedin.com/in/obie-anthony-56989649 Credits: Host: Kristine Bunch, Indiana exoneree and Outreach Coordinator for https://interrogatingjustice.org/ (Interrogating Justice) and https://howtojustice.org/ (How to Justice) Producer: Tammy Alexander, creator and co-host of the https://www.podpage.com/snow-files/ (Snow Files Podcast) Announcer: https://www.imdb.me/the-real-eric-brenner-on-tv (Eric Brenner), actor and voice over artist https://howtojustice.org/ (How to Justice) is a non-profit group that seeks to raise up justice-impacted people. In 1995, Obie Anthony was 19 years old when he was convicted of murder and attempted robbery. Despite no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, prosecutors relied on testimony from an informant - a convicted killer and pimp who ran a house of prostitution near the scene of the crime, and who claimed to have seen the shooter. In 2008, the Northern California Innocence Project working with Loyola's Project for the Innocent, took on his case. The court vacated Anthony’s conviction on September 30, 2011, after an 11-day evidentiary hearing. After 17 years in prison, Anthony was released on October 4, 2011, and prosecutors dismissed the charges on November 18, 2011. In August 2012, Anthony filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles, which agreed to settle the claim in 2015 for $8.3 million. Anthony was also awarded compensation by the State of California in the amount of $581,600. Obie Anthony has become an activist and used his lawsuit to create Exonerated Nation.

S2E13: Justice Had Just Begun: Stories From The 2017 Innocence Network Conference, Part Two This special edition of Wrongful Conviction was recorded at the 2017 Innocence Network Conference in San Diego, CA, where 170 exonerees and 750 members of the innocence movement gathered to honor newly freed people and learn about the latest developments in freeing the wrongfully convicted. Part Two features interviews with Kristine Bunch and Obie Anthony. Kristine Bunch was 22 years old and pregnant when she was charged with setting a fire that claimed the life of her three-year-old son, Anthony, on June 30, 1995, in a trailer home they shared in Decatur County, IN. She was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of 60 years for murder and 50 years for arson and languished behind bars for more than 17 years until her exoneration in 2012. Obie Anthony was 19 years old when he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1995. There was no physical evidence connecting him to the murder, and prosecutors relied on the testimony of John Jones, a convicted killer and pimp who ran a house of prostitution near the scene of the crime. He was exonerated in 2011 after serving 17 years in prison. Obie Anthony is the founder and president of Exonerated Nation, a non-profit organization that offers exonerees a variety of support services so that they may successfully transition to life outside of prison and reintegrate back into society. His activism was instrumental in the passage of California AB 672 in October 2015, now known as Obie’s Law, which requires the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the DMV to provide up to one year of transitional services including job training, housing assistance, and mental health services to all eligible exonerees released from state prison. wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co. 17 years in prison! Obie Anthony was convicted of a 1994 attempted robbery and the murder of Felipe Gonzales in 1995. The conviction, based on the testimony of one witness who operated a nearby house of prostitution, had a prior manslaughter conviction, and was known to carry and use firearms, was overturned in 2011. Northern California Innocence Project Legal Director, Linda Starr, said, “Police purposely ignored and hid evidence that did not support their theory…The prosecution falsely denied that they granted their star witness a deal for his cooperation and failed to correct his lies at trial. And Mr. Anthony's own attorney failed to investigate the case. For their failures, Mr. Anthony has spent 17 years in prison for a murder he did not commit – and the actual murderer has remained free. This cannot be considered justice” (Santa Clara Law News & Events). Tune in to hear Obie Anthony and Linda Starr tell Obie's story of his conviction, exoneration and his release 17 years later.
