But beneath the headlines lies a hidden story: John B. Wilson, a father falsely accused of bribery, became a scapegoat in a DOJ-orchestrated media circus. Despite no evidence of bribes, Wilson faced a brutal six-year battle against the Department of Justice, USC, and Netflix's distorted narrative. Exonerated on core charges, he now reveals the scandal within the scandal—how prosecutors manipulated evidence for fame and institutions shielded their interests. Join us for a gripping tale of injustice and one man's fight for truth. GUEST: John B. Wilson, author of Varsity Blues: The Scandal Within the Scandal, rose from a challenging childhood marked by poverty and an abusive mother to earn degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Harvard Business School, graduating at 23 as the youngest in his class. A trailblazing business leader, he became Bain & Company's youngest partner, helped Staples join the Fortune 500, and nserved as Gap Inc.'s COO during its $50 billion peak. Falsely accused in the 2019 Varsity Blues scandal, Wilson fought a six-year legal battle, exposing DOJ misconduct and media manipulation. Exonerated, he now advocates for justice system reform. On April 25, 1989, James Richardson was exonerated after spending 21 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit—the poisoning deaths of his seven children in 1967. A Florida fruit picker, Richardson was wrongfully convicted after flawed police work, suppressed evidence, and false testimony. His neighbor, Bessie Reece, had poisoned the children's lunch, but jurors never learned of her criminal past or her later confession. Special prosecutor Janet Reno reopened the case, uncovering the truth and leading to Richardson's release on May 5, 1989. Though he received a small settlement, he was denied full compensation from the state. Reece was never indicted. James Richardson passed away in 2023, a symbol of justice delayed but not denied. The Central Park 5, now known more accurately as The Exonerated 5, brought a defamation lawsuit against Donald Trump for stating during a presidential debate that the five men had "pled guilty", had "badly hurt someone" and had "killed someone", in connection with crimes that had been committed in Central Park in New York City. All three of Trump's assertion were untrue. Trump filed a motion to dismiss the defamation case, and a federal judge denied that motion to dismiss (with the exception of one of the counts, which the judge gave the plaintiffs leeway to correct and refile). The Delphi 'Missing Evidence' That Could Have Exonerated Richard Allen Could an innocent man be wasting away in prison while the real killer walks free? Richard Allen sits behind bars, sentenced to 130 years, but his confession seems more like the ramblings of a broken man than an admission of guilt. After 14 months in solitary confinement, he emerged a shadow of himself, claiming responsibility for crimes that defy logic—including one against a grandchild that doesn't even exist. So why is the prosecution clinging to this? And why were other key suspects, like Keegan Klein and Ron Logan, seemingly ignored despite damning evidence? Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott dig into the murky waters of this case, questioning whether justice has been sacrificed at the altar of ego, or if something even more sinister is at play. Is the justice system failing to seek the truth, or has it never really been about truth at all? #TrueCrime #DelphiMurders #RichardAllen #HiddenKillers #JusticeSystem #CrimePodcast #LegalCorruption Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Lori Vallow “I Will Be Exonerated” – Legal Expert Breaks Down Her Delusion Is Lori Vallow-Daybell really convinced she's walking free, or is this just another chapter in her bizarre saga of self-delusion? In a jaw-dropping jailhouse interview with Keith Morrison, Lori doubles down on her innocence, claiming divine visions of her own exoneration—even as she sits convicted and serving a life sentence. From believing her children were zombies to now believing Jesus personally showed her a future without prison bars, Lori's grasp on reality seems... tenuous at best. But could her courtroom antics actually influence a jury? And how will a judge handle her inevitable outbursts when she represents herself? Buckle up—this trial is bound to get weird. Even after Christopher Dunn won his release from prison in July, Missouri's Attorney General is still trying to put him back. It's just one of the consequences of the unique way Missouri law treats claims of "actual innocence.” We discuss the state of Missouri's innocence laws with Saint Louis University criminologist Kenya Brumfield-Young, as well as attorney Charlie Weiss, who has represented five people who were released from prison after being found innocent. Weiss and Brumfield-Young also share their insights into a proposed bill that would expand the scope of who can make a claim of “actual innocence” under current Missouri law.

This is a special feature on Crime to Burn. On Sunday, November 10, I was able to sit down and have a conversation with Kristine Bunch. We covered Kristine's case in episodes 32 and 33. Kristine was accused of intentionally setting a fire at her home that claimed the life of her toddler son. Investigators developed their theory of what happened based on a now debunked arson investigation myth that was once widely believed. Shanin Specter, attorney for the exonerated "Central Park Five" joins Michael to discuss the defamation suit filed against former President Trump for what he said about them in a September 2024 presidential debate. The group of men were accused and convicted of raping and beating a woman in New York City in 1989. The convictions were vacated in 2002 after someone else confessed to the crime. Specter says had Trump immediately retracted and apologized after his comments in the debate with VP Kamala Harris, they would not have filed the lawsuit. Original air date 22 October 2024.
David and Robert Bintz, brothers from Green Bay, Wisconsin, were exonerated in September 2024 after spending nearly 25 years in prison for the 1987 murder of Sandra Lison. Lison, a 44-year-old mother of two, was working as a bartender at Good Times in Green Bay when she disappeared. Her body was discovered shortly after in the Machickanee Forest, 30 miles away, having been strangled. Authorities also found evidence of sexual assault. Despite no physical evidence connecting the brothers to the crime, David Bintz became a suspect after allegedly arguing with Lison over a bar tab on the night she vanished. The case remained unsolved for over a decade until, in 1998, David, who was already serving time for another crime, was implicated by a cellmate who claimed David had confessed to the murder in his sleep. In 2000, both brothers were convicted of robbing and killing Lison and sentenced to life in prison. The conviction, however, rested on circumstantial evidence, as no physical proof tied them to the scene of the crime. The turning point in the case came nearly two decades later when the Great North Innocence Project, based in Minnesota, took an interest in the brothers' situation. After years of legal battles, the organization enlisted the help of the Investigate Genetic Genealogy Center (IGG) at Ramapo College in New Jersey. Through genetic genealogy, investigators were able to create a DNA profile from the evidence found at the crime scene. After running the profile through consumer databases like GEDmatch, the IGG narrowed the DNA match down to three brothers, one of whom was William Hendricks, a convicted rapist who had died in 2000. The case took a significant step forward when authorities exhumed Hendricks' remains in April 2024. A DNA comparison revealed there was a one in 329 trillion chance that anyone other than Hendricks was responsible for the crime. In light of this conclusive evidence, a Wisconsin judge vacated the brothers' convictions on September 27, 2024, officially setting them free after decades of wrongful imprisonment. “Today, Sandra Lison will rest in peace, because her true murderer is now known,” said Judge Donald Zuidmulder in court. “It is therefore my bounded duty to exercise and follow the law, well satisfied that I will sign judgments vacating the convictions for both of these defendants and set them free.” The ruling brought an end to a decades-long fight for justice, though questions remain about how the brothers were convicted in the first place without concrete physical evidence. District Attorney David Lasee, responding to concerns about the initial investigation, said, “The prosecutors and the law enforcement officers were handling this case at the outset, followed the evidence that they had at that time, and that conviction was sound.” The exoneration of David and Robert Bintz is one of the many recent cases where DNA evidence and advances in genetic genealogy have cleared individuals who were wrongfully convicted. The case also underscores the significant role that innocence projects play in reviewing and challenging old convictions. As the Bintz brothers begin to rebuild their lives, the true perpetrator, William Hendricks, will forever be linked to the brutal killing of Sandra Lison, offering a sense of resolution for her family. However, the long road to justice highlights the flaws in a system that allowed two men to spend nearly half their lives behind bars for a crime they did not commit.
