Amelia brings the panic, Monique brings the Australian research, and Stacey wonders whether asking children to read every night is accidentally killing the joy. Twenty-five years on, we're taking Elle Woods back to court, and this one holds up better than almost anything else from 2001. First up we get into the real-life story the movie is based on: the real law student who felt like an outcast for loving pink and for the fluffy pen she took to class. Then there's the casting chaos that nearly sank the whole thing. Christina Applegate said no, Britney Spears was in the mix, and the studio thought Reese was too "unlikeable" to lead, so we break down the audacious move she pulled to land the role, and why it only works because of her.And finally, the ending you never got to see. In a rare twist, test audiences wanted more, and the alternate version they nearly went with would've turned the whole film into a cautionary tale. We unpack the courtroom perm logic, and the graduation speech Donald Trump allegedly lifted from Elle Woods.Remember The Spill drops the tea twice a day in this feed so follow us for all the latest entertainment news… OR you can WATCH our show in full length video on the Apple Podcast app - make sure your phone is up to date and enjoy the watch! Lexi Minetree was handpicked by Reese Witherspoon from over 3,000 auditions to play Elle Woods in the new Legally Blonde series, and she has not looked back. In this chat with Josh, Lexi opens up about the acting teacher who told her she wasn't the actor he thought she was, and how it almost broke her. She talks about the voice memos Reese sent her when she was doubting herself, and why she deliberately does things that terrify her. She also tells Josh what it meant to work alongside James Van Der Beek in his final ever on-screen role, and why some of the throwbacks to 2001's Legally Blonde - like using a payphone - stopped her in her tracks.  Plus she joins the group chat to answer your questions, including how long it took to get ready as Elle every day and why her most dreaded small talk topic right now is her own show. Jump into a grab bag of legal issues, a “law salad” of ideas that have lately been on the minds of hosts Jim Reeder and Mic Rogson. Law may teach you to think like a lawyer, but does it also teach the practice of law? Hear what Mic and Jim walked away with on graduation day and how it applied to their careers and decades of experience. Practicing law after law school sometimes produces surprises, like learning to mix linear thinking with creativity. You can prepare all you want, but sometimes you need to be “as flexible as Gumby,” Mic says. In the real world,  Jim says, practicing lawyers learn to be comfortable. Comfortable with creativity, comfortable with reacting to surprises, and comfortable admitting to the judge, and themselves, that they don't know everything and may need time to review unfamiliar case law when it crops up in the courtroom. Intimidation and anxiety are the enemy, and young lawyers must learn to relax and react. Then, forget “real life” as Mic and Jim share their favorite courtroom dramas and comedies. What's your guilty pleasure, and which productions capture how you feel about the law? Everything from the gravity of “Judgment at Nuremberg” to the lighthearted “Legally Blonde” to the surprisingly accurate portrayal in “My Cousin Vinny.” What's your favorite? Matt and Dawn are joined by Luke to review four shows available on streaming services this week. Firstly, a once firm podcast favourite, The Bear, bows out with its fifth and final season. This season has a different shape, with the first 7 of 8 episodes taking place over the course of one stressful night of serving customers at the restaurant. The format change feels fresh, but after 2 two lacklustre seasons, does the show go out on a high? Next, Apple TV's newest show, Lucky, stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a criminal on the run. It's a fast-paced, frenetic show that never really slows down and feels very different to the shows we've reviewed of late. Prime Video has Elle, a prequel to Legally Blonde, which explores the early life of Elle Woods that might not be required at all. Lastly, Dawn and Matt review the first episode of one of their favourite little comedy gems, Trying.

It's Friday night, I'm home alone, and I'm recording a completely ridiculous episode. No coaching, no reframe, just me wanting to talk to someone about episode one of the new Elle Woods show on Amazon Prime. My husband took the kids to the beach, I opened Prime, and this little show whisked me right back to being a '90s Seattle grunge girl. Fair warning: this one is pure nostalgia. If you grew up in the '90s, went to concerts, lived anywhere near the Pacific Northwest, or ever dyed a strip in your hair and thought it was the coolest thing ever (it was not, but it was to me), come sit with me for a few minutes. And if that's not you, skip this one. I promise next week's episode gets deep and coachy again. WHAT I COVER IN THIS EPISODE: Why the show is a love letter to 40-year-old women who grew up on Legally Blonde (and why they nailed it) The soundtrack, the plaid, the hoodies, the one girl with an umbrella, and how perfectly they captured '90s Seattle grunge My own Seattle years, from Capitol Hill to Green Lake, walking my puppies and running my dog-training business The clique-and-judge culture of '90s high school, and my honest confession about who I would have been to a new girl like Elle Why I love that the show's characters are positive and kind, and what that stirred up in me as a parent now A little window into the me you might not know: concerts, green Doc Martens, and starting a web design company at 17 LINKS AND RESOURCES: Come to France with me https://catholicmomcalm.com/france/ Calm Catholic Kids (Summer of Kindness stories free now, Collections 4 and 5 coming soon): https://calmcatholickids.com CONNECT WITH STERLING JAQUITH: Website: https://catholicmomcalm.com Connect on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/catholicmomcalm

Currently two things seem to be true: there are ever more stage musicals based on films, and there is ever more debate about whether there are too many of them.Today Mickey-Jo is glancing back at the history of the film-to-stage adaptations, the major examples that shifted how audiences engage with such shows including Disney's arrival on Broadway as well as musicals including Monty Python's Spamalot and Legally Blonde, and the potentially growing disinterest in recent movie based narratives. He is also considering whether musicals based on movies have a brand image problem, the shows that are already trying to circumvent that, what the future might look like for the contemporary Broadway musical, and whether original shows are inherently better...check out Mickey-Jo's free substack newsletter:www.mickeyjotheatre.substack.com•00:00 | introduction03:04 | the history13:41 | the popularity23:52 | is originality better?30:28 | conclusionAbout Mickey-Jo:As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. We talk about finding Elle's signature pink, creating the difference between Beverly Hills and Seattle, and designing the spaces that shape her world before UCLA and Harvard. In this episode, we discuss Elle's bedroom, the Woods family house, the Seattle high school, the Cosmo office, Blockbuster, and how the design team balanced 90s authenticity with a fresh visual style for today's audience. This conversation is a thoughtful look at how production design and set decoration can reveal who a character is becoming through palette, texture, space, and detail.Listen to Decorating Pages for more interviews with the production designers, set decorators, and art department teams behind your favorite shows and films.

Ever wondered what a ‘winter show' looks like? Well fear not because Steph clues you in on this week's show as we dive into another triad of televisual entertainment. First out of the gate this week is the final season of The Bear on Disney+ (51:06). Will the restaurant keep its doors open? Will Carmy and Syd be able to save the day? Will Ritchie yell obscenities across the kitchen? All is revealed in the show's last hurrah. We also take a trip back to the high school origin story of Legally Blonde's Elle Woods in Elle on Prime (1:05:50), and head back beneath the earth for a return to the Silo on Apple TV (1:15:45). And if that wasn't enough, the team make their respective cases for characters who deserved more screen time than they ultimately received and stage a full-throated (steady!) recommendation of what we're calling ‘the great unifier', the one show that has aligned James, Kay, Steph and Boyd in unanimous admiration.Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide.
