Self Evident: Asian America's Stories

Daphne Chen always held a special place in her heart for the Taiwanese girl group S.H.E. Growing up in Ohio, she'd listen to their greatest hits before falling asleep, clinging to their pop songs as one of her only genuine links to the island and the culture her family had left far behind. So years later, when Daphne realized that those greatest hits were actually covers of American pop songs by Destiny's Child and the Legally Blonde soundtrack, she suddenly had a lot of questions... not just about S.H.E., but about why idolizing a Taiwanese girl group was so important to young Daphne in the first place. In this episode, we're sharing three conversations about the need to see and hear ourselves in popular culture — and the limitations of what pop culture can do to meet those needs. After Cathy chats with Daphne about their Asian teen idols in music, our intern Alex Chun calls up his favorite OnlyFans star, Cody Seiya, to unpack how watching queer porn has played such an outsized role in their own understanding of intimacy. Then, producer Harsha Nahata meets with two Indian diaspora culture writers to compare how — even with their differing upbringings and vastly different relationships to Bollywood movies — they began to question the role and the power of the Bollywood industry. Rhys Thomas, who directed multiple episodes of Marvel's Hawkeye series (including the first two), has clarified when, exactly, the Disney+ show fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Despite fan speculation that Hawkeye takes place in 2025 (two years after the present-day in Avengers: Endgame), Thomas has confirmed the show unfolds in the MCU's version of 2024. "For a period of time, we were going to set it two years out - which would make it 2025 - hence me messing with your minds about the timeline. But it's [one] year out [from Endgame]," tweeted Thomas. Hawkeye set photos leaked well ahead of the series' debut showed Clint Barton, Kate Bishop, and Lucky/Pizza Dog in New York City's Chinatown district outside a store with a sign in its window reading "Happy New Year 2025," as well as text referring to it as a Snake Year on the Chinese Zodiac. (The next Snake Year is, indeed, 2025.) However, it wasn't until Hawkeye's marketing campaign confirmed the show takes place right before Christmas that fans had all the pieces they needed to conclude the show picks up in December 2024 and not the early part of 2025. While the series' main storyline plays out in the post-Blip MCU, Hawkeye's first episode opened with a flashback to a key moment from The Avengers (2012) -- which, in terms of the MCU's timeline, takes place over a decade before the show's present-day. "We wanted to figure out a pivotal moment that made sense for Kate to enter the MCU, especially through her eyes," said producer Trinh Tran when asked why the series' creatives decided to link Kate's backstory with Earth's Mightiest Heroes (Clint included) this way. Between Clint trying to retire as Hawkeye and Kate aspiring to fight crime herself, the first two episodes of Hawkeye suggest the show may well serve as the swan song for Jeremy Renner's run playing the former in the MCU. Renner, who has jokingly referred to himself as being a "grandpa" of the franchise, is understandably keeping his cards close to the chest for the time being and simply claiming he has "no idea" what the future holds for Clint in the MCU beyond the series' final episode. Cobie Smulders To Reprise Maria Hill Role in Marvel Series ‘Secret Invasion' https://deadline.com/2021/12/cobie-smulders-maria-hill-marvel-series-secret-invasion-1234883068/ EXCLUSIVE: Cobie Smulders is set to reunite with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury on Marvel's Secret Invasion, reprising her her MCU role of Maria Hill. The Disney+ crossover comic event showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years. A rep for Marvel declined comment. Secret Invasion also stars Ben Mendelsohn — reprising his role as Skrull Talos — Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Christopher McDonald and Killian Scott. Smulders has reprised the role in several Marvel pics including Spider-Man: Far From Home, Captain America: Civil War and every Avengers film. She recently received strong reviews for her portrayal of Ann Coulter in American Crime Story: Impeachment. Kathryn Hahn discovered the name of her WandaVision spinoff series, Agatha: House of Harkness, when it was announced to the public. In an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Hahn discussed her excitement for reprising her role as Agatha Harkness in the upcoming series and the secrecy involved in working on a Marvel project. "I mean I didn't even know the title of the show until it was released to the public, they keep it so tight," she explained. Hahn also touched on why the role of Agatha appeals to her and why she wants to continue the character's story arc. "There is something that does feel so badass to be playing like, you know, we think of a witch, and you think of, immediately, you think of a woman who is loud, who is mysterious, who is dangerous because she's complicated and she's misunderstood," she said. "And all that stuff is a real turn-on to me as a performer in terms of digging into this person a little bit more. [I'm] very excited." Hahn played coy when asked about the potential for the series to introduce Mephisto, who was heavily rumored to be pulling the strings in WandaVision. "I have no idea," she said. "That was like a big thing during WandaVision, but I have no– who knows. I mean, I think right now, like anything, like Marvel, I mean who knows?" Agatha appeared in WandaVision as a powerful witch who used dark magic in an attempt to steal Wanda Maximoff's abilities. She initially hid behind the persona of Agnes, the nosy neighbor of Westview who always found a way to inject herself into Wanda and Vision's family life. After she was defeated, the series concluded with Agatha being trapped as her character in Westview. Hahn's performance was praised by critics and fans, with the actor being nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series. "Agatha All Along", the song from WandaVision that revealed Agatha as the antagonist, won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and recently received a Grammy nod. Plot details about Agatha: House of Harkness are currently unknown, with the title and the return of Hahn being the only pieces of information about the series. A WandaVision spinoff show centered on Agatha was announced back in October, with the official title reveal coming as a part of Disney+ Day the following month. Disney+ Cuts Two Pre-MCU Marvel Films From Its Lineup https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-pre-mcu-marvel-fantastic-four-cut/ Two classic Fox Marvel films are no longer available to stream on Disney+, and the reason why isn't totally clear. Disney+ subscribers looking to watch either 2005's Fantastic Four or 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer will have to look elsewhere, as the two films have seemingly been removed from the platform. At this time, it's not totally clear why the two movie left Disney+ on Dec. 1. Josh Trank's maligned Fantastic Four reboot is still available on the platform, alongside the two animated series based on Marvel's First Family. However, rights issues for streaming can be complicated, so it's possible Fantastic Four and Rise of the Silver Surfer will eventually end up back on Disney+. Both removed films are also still available to stream on Peacock. Directed by Tim Story, 2005's Fantastic Four was the first live-action film based on the titular superheroes to receive an official release. The movie starred Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Jessica Alba as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm/Thing and Julian McMahon as Victor Von Doom. Fantastic Four proved a moderate success at the box office, earning $333.5 million against a budget of between $87.5 and $100 million. However, the movie did not fare well with critics, and its score on Rotten Tomatoes currently sits at 27 percent. Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer were both distributed by 20th Century Fox and come from an era when Disney and Marvel Studios did not own the rights to the characters. However, in 2019, Disney bought 21st Century Fox, thus giving Marvel Studios the rights to the Fantastic Four. Soon after, Marvel Studios announced work on a Marvel Cinematic Universe Fantastic Four film, which Spider-Man trilogy director Jon Watts will helm. There is no casting information for that film at this time. Created by comics legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four first appeared in a 1961 self-titled series. Over the years, the team has had a number of different members. The core Fantastic Four, though, has generally consisted of Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and Thing. At the start of their adventures, the four get their powers after being exposed to cosmic rays during a mission into outer space. OUTRO [44:47] We would love to hear back from you! Join the lads this week as they discuss OPI Nail Varnish for dogs, the best way to get a man's hands on your 'package' and John makes a Dogs Dinner of naming the Ivy League Schools. We're talking Legally Blonde! --- Join us on the Socials: Twitter Instagram Facebook Support the show (Buy me a Coffee) --- Legally Blonde is a 2001 American comedy film directed by Robert Luketic in his feature-length directorial debut. Written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith from Amanda Brown's 2001 novel of the same name, it stars Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, and Jennifer Coolidge. Witherspoon plays Elle Woods, a sorority girl who attempts to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III by getting a Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School, and in the process, overcomes stereotypes against blondes and triumphs as a successful lawyer through unflappable self-confidence and fashion/beauty knowhow. The outline of Legally Blonde originated from Brown's experiences as a blonde going to Stanford Law School while being obsessed with fashion and beauty, reading Elle magazine, and frequently clashing with the personalities of her peers. In 2000, Brown met producer Marc Platt, who helped her develop her manuscript into a novel. Platt brought in screenwriters McCullah Lutz and Smith to adapt the book into a motion picture. The project caught the attention of director Luketic, an Australian newcomer who came to Hollywood on the success of his quirky debut short film Titsiana Booberini. "I had been reading scripts for two years, not finding anything I could put my own personal mark on, until Legally Blonde came around," Luketic said. The film was released on July 13, 2001, and was a hit with audiences, grossing $141 million worldwide on an $18 million budget, as well as receiving moderately positive reviews from critics, with particular praise going to Witherspoon's performance. It was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy. Witherspoon received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and the 2002 MTV Movie Award for Best Female Performance. The box office success led to a series of films: a 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and a 2009 direct-to-DVD spin-off, Legally Blondes. Additionally, Legally Blonde: The Musical premiered on January 23, 2007, in San Francisco and opened in New York City at the Palace Theatre on Broadway on April 29, 2007, starring Laura Bell Bundy. In May 2020, it was announced that Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were signed to write a third film.[3] In October 2020, MGM Studios confirmed via their official social media that Legally Blonde 3 is planned for release in May 2022.[4]

His famous father, Michael McLean, included Jeff in countless productions, which gave him unmatched training and earned confidence. "After performing all over the world and receiving the best training possible, I have become passionate about helping my students discover their voice and all its components. This discovery process gives my students permission to fall in love with the sound of their own voice. The journey of connecting with your emotions, understanding them, and allowing them to express vocally will be your key to creating the most beautiful and honest musicality. Training and performing all over the world for the past 2 decades has been a shaping experience. I have gained keen awareness about what kind of training is the most beneficial to defining my students' vocal artistry and technique. Courage takes many different shapes and forms for all of us. Whether you're walking down a catwalk, standing on top of a stage, or finding yourself through challenging times, the strength and resilience it takes to keep striving and showing up for yourself everyday is inspiring and truly powerful. I am bringing you the incredibly talented Erika Heynatz. I have known Erika for two decades and she is one of my absolute favourite performing artists.  Erika studied graphic design at university before beginning in the fashion industry as a model. She built a very successful career, including walking catwalks in Europe and hosting Australia's Top Model, before changing paths to become a performing artist.  In this episode, we discuss Erika's early career and her bold move to become a singer and perform on stage for ‘It Takes Two', Marie Claire, and three musicals including Legally Blonde, Singin' in the Rain, and Rocky Horror. Her show stopping performance won her BWW's Best Featured Actress in a Musical and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress In A Musical at the Helpmann Awards.  Erika shares her challenges, including how difficult it was to find a tribe and community when she was a model because so many people in that industry have blocked themselves off from others.  Erika warmly opens up about the nerves and fear she felt before going on stage. Through strength she changed her mindset to face her fears, find her courage and realise that it's not about her. The incredible thing about theatre is that it's all about the impact for the audience and purely just being in the moment that makes it a one-of-a-kind experience.  Erika talks about how she found her voice through standing up for herself and for other women. She discovered her power and strength through fear and pain. This experience has changed her as a performer and led her to build boundaries for herself and for others. She has found her passion to write her own content and plug in with amazing female creatives to tell a story of her own about perfection and disconnection. Erika's journey embodies bravery and courage. I know that it will resonate with many women and I'm so grateful to be bringing it to you.   Where to Find Erika:  Linked In:Erika Heynatz Instagram: ErikaHeynatz (@erikaheynatz) • Instagram photos and videos   Where to Find Tory: Website: https://powerful-steps.com/  Instagram: @powerfulsteps Powerful Steps Coffee Challenge: https://powerful-steps.com/coffee-challenge/.  Join The Confidence to Pitch Workshop - Nov 15th: https://powerful-steps.com/mentor-global-entrepreneur-program/the-confidence-to-pitch/ Youtube Channel:  Powerful Steps - YouTube See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
