POPULARITY
Isn’t having a good old belly laugh just the best thing?! Humour brightens up our lives. It’s fun, frivolous, fanciful, frolicsome, farcical and, well, freakin’ funny. But what if humour is also foundational to our flourishing and fulfilment? This week we’re taking humour seriously. We talk to psychologist Nettie Cullen about what humour does for us and Petra sits down with her old comedy mate, David Downs, who used humour to get through an otherwise grim cancer journey. And we even hear from some of you, accosted by us while relaxing in a park. Oh and we promise you a hearty helping of hilarity along the way! 396 Mortal Kombat 2 Invincible Finale Boys Backlash Flight of the ConchordsDoom Scrolling IntroSteph kicks things off with a Tip Top canned cocktail (Jungle Bird) while the Foos recap a packed weekend: Joe's work family-day picnic vibes, notes for next year (more trucks, coffee cart dreams, boba cart fantasies), and a throwback hang with old band friends at Richie's birthday — the same house where they used to throw teenage ragers. Joe lands a darkly perfect joke: the only time people call you “young” at 40 is at your funeral. Then Florida delivers, as always: a homeless man allegedly catches a felony after throwing an open ketchup packet at a Good Samaritan who checked on him — with the real story being the drugs they reportedly found afterward. Florida stays undefeated.Geeking Out is stacked: the Foos review Mortal Kombat 2 (May 8) and declare it's basically a full-on Johnny Cage movie — bigger scale, more classic characters, more fan service, and fight scenes that feel like the game's arenas brought to life. They roast a friend for making it halfway through the movie before realizing he thought he was watching Street Fighter. They also hit the Invincible season 4 finale fallout: Mark's trauma, Thragg stepping up as the looming big threat, Viltrumite chaos, and the internet's meme machine going into overdrive (mustaches included). Then it's The Boys discourse: the newest episode getting the lowest rating of the series, pacing complaints, and the show flirting with burnout — plus the wild release idea of the series finale in 4DX one day early… and the local showings basically selling out instantly. From there it's rapid-fire: Green Day's upcoming comedy movie Nimrods (Legion M involvement), the Swatch x Audemars Piguet “Royal Pop” collab causing real-world chaos (lines, cops, pepper spray) over a watch you can't even buy online, and a Mortal Kombat trivia quiz where Steph nearly goes perfect… until the razor-hat question exposes the Kung Lao/Liu Kang mix-up.Here's What I Would Do wraps with two dilemmas:Tori (Burbank) thinks a married coworker is crossing the line with “work spouse” energy and wants to shut it down without workplace fallout.Alyssa (Costa Mesa) agreed to location sharing with her boyfriend and now feels watched — and the Foos call it what it is: modern convenience turning into surveillance real fast. Before the outro, they shout out the Flight of the Conchords show at the Greek (their first time in years), with surprise moments and guests — and plenty of “Netflix is a joke” energy.ChaptersDoom Scrolling IntroIntroTip Top Jungle Bird canned cocktail + weekend recapWork family day picnic notes coffee cart boba cart talkOld band friends Richie birthday throwback rager houseFlorida man felony over ketchup packet + drugs foundGeeking Out Mortal Kombat 2 review Johnny Cage movieFriend thought it was Street Fighter until halfway throughInvincible season 4 finale trauma Thragg Viltrumites memesThe Boys lowest rated episode discourse pacing burnoutThe Boys finale in 4DX one day early sold out scrambleGreen Day movie Nimrods Legion M summer releaseSwatch Audemars Piguet Royal Pop collab chaos lines copsMortal Kombat trivia quiz Steph almost perfectHere's What I Would Do Married coworker flirting Tori BurbankHere's What I Would Do Location sharing feels like surveillance Alyssa Costa MesaFlight of the Conchords at the Greek recapOutro + Doom Scrolling OutroMortal Kombat 2, Johnny Cage, Invincible season 4 finale, Thragg, Viltrumites, The Boys backlash, 4DX finale, Green Day Nimrods, Legion M, Swatch Audemars Piguet Royal Pop, Florida ketchup felony, Flight of the Conchords Greek Theatre, work spouse, location sharing
Johnny Mac reports Conan O'Brien will host the 99th Oscars on March 14, 2027, noting muted social media reaction and quoting Disney TV Group president Craig Erwich praising Conan's “singular comedic voice.” He discusses a new Strike Force Five podcast where Stephen Colbert reflects on having only a few Late Show episodes left, uncertainty about future plans, and staff needing to vacate offices immediately after the finale; he also recounts guests he'd ban, guests he found attractive, and recent on-air kisses with Jimmy Fallon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Pedro Pascal. CNN will air a flash doc, “The Last Laugh: Stephen Colbert.” On the Kevin Hart roast, Variety says Michael Che and others dropped out due to scheduling; Che criticizes differences in roast writing and highlights mostly white joke writers, while Lil Rel Howery condemns Tony Hinchcliffe's George Floyd joke. Johnny Mac previews the Netflix Is a Joke roast of Kevin Hart (hosted by Shane Gillis) airing live Friday, noting Netflix hasn't announced roasters and speculating about possible names while quoting Netflix executives on choosing Hart and discussing Funny AF as a discovery vehicle. He recaps the Funny AF winner Ron Taylor's Vulture interview, covering his surprise at winning, follower growth, material and time-management issues, strategy shifts for live public voting, and plans to build an hour after winning. He highlights Angela Johnson's new special “Ugly Baby,” including her approach to family-related jokes, and reports Sinbad's return to performing after his 2020 stroke. In “Gossip corner,” he cites a Naughty But Nice report about Jimmy Fallon's odd Miami Grand Prix behavior and shares a past Sirius clip anecdote. Plus: His Crazy Car Accident, Comic Books, Letters From Prison, Hegseth, Hampshire College Closing and More! Comedians are under attack. The MAGA machine has pushed Stephen Colbert off the air, gone after Jimmy Kimmel, and skipped a comedian at the White House Correspondents Dinner for the first time in memory. That's not an accident — it's the playbook of every authoritarian regime that ever feared a punchline. Paul Rieckhoff sits down with his old college friend, beloved comedian and actor Eugene Mirman — Bob's Burgers, Flight of the Conchords, and the new special Here Comes the Whimsy — for a candid, funny, and unexpectedly moving conversation about what it means to make people laugh while the rigged two-party system burns and Trump and the executive branch goes all gas, no brakes. Eugene, a refugee from a genuinely authoritarian country, doesn't sugarcoat it: Trump's instincts are fascist, the cruelty is the point, and the use of state power to threaten billion-dollar companies into firing comedians is straight out of the thug-regime handbook. But he also refuses nihilism — America, he argues, is too big and too used to freedom to be wholly silenced, and that's exactly why the work of comedians, podcasters, and independent voices matters right now. Along the way the two cover Eugene's harrowing New Hampshire car crash and rescue, the absurd unqualified men running the Pentagon and the VP's office, comic books as hopeful dystopia, and why the angry middle should keep laughing — and keep showing up. Eugene Mirman is one of the most respected comedic voices of his generation. A refugee from the former Soviet Union, he is best known as the voice of Gene Belcher on Bob's Burgers and as the landlord on Flight of the Conchords, and was a regular on Adult Swim's Delocated. He co-founded the Pretty Good Friends comedy company in the basement of Brooklyn's Union Hall, has opened for The Shins, Modest Mouse, Yo La Tengo, Gogol Bordello, and Cake, and was named best New York City comedian by The Village Voice. A graduate of Hampshire College — where he designed his own major in comedy and delivered a one-hour stand-up set as his thesis — his latest special is Here Comes the Whimsy. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Watch/hear Eugene Mirman's hilarious new special album: Here Comes the Whimsy. -Check out Eugene's Pretty Good Friends. -Ditch your expensive carrier and support Independent Americans! In this episode of The Comedian's Paradise, host Marvin McCarthy sits down with the brilliant Jack McMinn, a standout musical comedian and a true "man of interesting facts". Jack pulls back the curtain on his creative DNA, tracing his early inspirations from the deadpan genius of Flight of the Conchords and the lyrical mastery of Tim Minchin. They dive into the evolution of comedy through the noughties and tens, discussing the unique "weirdness" of being a musical act in a stand-up world and why musical comedy remains such a powerful tool for connection. The conversation takes a deep dive into Jack's role as an archivist of the craft, exploring his "Whovian" obsession with Doctor Who and the profound influence of The Beatles on his songwriting. To wrap things up, Jack shares one of the most legendary stories in comedy lore: the incredible true tale of how Billy Connolly got discovered. From the wild characters of the circuit to the science of a perfect parody, this episode is a masterclass in the intersection of music, history, and humour.Episode Chapters[[00:00]] My inspiration from Flight of the concords and Tim Minchin [[04:16]][[04:16]] The noughties and tens, what matters in comedy, do I get any weirdness being a musical comedian, why musical comedy helps [[13:07]][[13:07]] Lots of wild people do comedy and restarting comedy multiple times [[19:47]][[34:39]] The story of the Beatles and my love for doctor who [[45:31]][[52:00]] How Billy Connolly got found [[59:00]]If you would like to know more on Jack, follow him on Tiktok and Instagram at jackmcminnpiano. Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie unveils new album 'Freak Out City' Kiwi musician and comedian Bret McKenzie, best known for his work with Flight of the Conchords, is set to release his second album next week. Freak Out City is a follow-up to his 2022 solo project Songs Without Jokes. The lead off single is All I Need, and Bret McKenzie says it's inspired by his long-term relationship with his wife, Hannah. "It's funny, when you've been in a relationship that long, there are some days where you love each other more than other days... and on one of those days where things were going great, I sat down at the piano and wrote this song." RHLSTP #588 - Edmund Hilary's Yeti Rucksack - Rich is upset about the things his wife is saying about him in her show, but never mind, he's being visited by the crew from the Cryptid Factor, Rhys Darby, Dan Schreiber and the mysterious Buttons. They chat about ghosts (a lot, given they've said they don't really talk about that), Rich trying to kill the Loch Ness Monster and what the Loch Ness Monster might actually be, whether an alien spacecraft is on the way to conquer Earth (you'll probably know one way or the other by the time this goes out and I for one welcome our alien overlords), the incredible rise of New Zealand comedians, which podcast is Dan's proper one, Button's hob-nobbing with Prime Ministers and rugby players, the improvised scenes in Flight of the Conchords and making out with Scully and why did Rich need to apologise to Rhys? - will there be time to find out?Listen to the Cryptid Factor here (or wherever you get your podcasts) - https://open.spotify.com/show/6N8YaO6bqGr7RtCMovP4HLSee RHLSTP live - https://richardherring.com/gigsSUPPORT THE SHOW!See details of the RHLSTP LIVE DATES Watch our TWITCH CHANNELBecome a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITE Buy DVDs and books from GO FASTER STRIPE Hosted on Acast. RHLSTP #587 - That's F***ing Bonkers - Richard is considering changing political allegiance if it can rescue his fading career, but he doesn't have to worry today - it's a sell-out crowd to see tiny keyboard wunderkind David O'Doherty. They discuss getting drunk on live TV with Dua Lipa, whether David needs therapy to unpack the different in sizes between his and his dad's instruments, how David might be at the exact right level of fame and what that means about interactions with his fans, confounding Richard Wilson, David's possible hidden superpower, why awards mean nothing if you're won them, how David saved the careers of the Flight of the Conchords and how Nish Kumar's diarrhoea proved that David's podcast idea would be a hit . Plus a human mic stand and a brilliant song from this friendly genius of a comedian. Mortality is a heavy, heavy subject. It was brought up in the forums a while ago so we're chatting about it now. We talk about death in popculture, how we treat death in our comics and our growing awareness of mortality as adults. You become increasingly aware of mortality as you age, mainly because you witness more and more of it in action; pets, celebrities that you loved, public figures that you're aware of, grandparents, family friends, parents, friends, and eventually even you have health scares. It's a cumulative thing, but eventually you move from being young and immortal to having the spectre of death ever-present. The ultimate goal of ALL life is immortality, it's what it always strives for in various ways; the two main ones being longevity and reproduction. Life is amazing in that it's a self sustaining bunch of chemical reactions and processes that have an inbuilt goal to keep on going forever however that can be accomplished. There are almost immortal things in our world like the earth and our sun that are billions of years old but even they die eventually and they have no way, will, or mechanism to prevent that, unlike life. But even though we as humans have relatively long lives compared to most other living things and we reproduce quite well, we as individuals certainly are NOT immortal and we have to deal with that in many ways. Our cultures traditionally separate death from normal life, we venerate it through religious practice, explain it and mythologise it. In the modern day we're separated from the realities of death more than ever before because childhood mortality is super low, we all live longer than ever before and when we reach the end of life we're hidden away in retirement homes and hospitals. Most people live in cities and don't experience the same close relationship with death that those on farms and fishing communities constantly dealt with. But it never goes away. As time moves on it always draws nearer, like a slowly creeping shadow. Which is a great analogy because light seems so bright and active, warm and enveloping, it seems ever-present and forever lasting- our sun is four and a half billion years old. But the end will come for that too eventually and things will return to darkness. Darkness and non-life are the natural state of things, life is only a brief glow, an aberration, momentary. The idea that life and death, dark and light are equal, different sides of the same coin and in balance is total and complete nonsense: Darkness and death are the normal, ordinary, basic, state of things- it's ubiquitous and universal, whereas life like light is unusual, precious, singular and special. Never forget that. This week Gunwallace was still recovering from his hospital stay so another best off: Life and Death - Light hearted lyrics and classical vaudevillian comical ukulele mixed with synth in the best tradition of flight of the Conchords… but this is Gunwallace !Originally 20th Feb 2017 in Quackcast 311 Topics and shownotes Links Mortality thread - https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/forum/topic/180089/ Featured comic: DemiMon Hollow Town Syndrome - https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/news/2025/sep/08/featured-comic-demimon-hollow-town-syndrome/ Featured music: Life and Death - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Life_and_Death/, by Joff, rated E. Welcome to the kick off of Transmissions' new season with your host, Jason P. Woodbury, after a wonderful summer mini-series from Tyler Wilcox, All One Song: A Neil Young Podcast. We first encountered this week's guest, New Zealand songwriter, actor, and composer Bret McKenzie, as one half of the indie pop/comedy duo Flight of the Conchords in the mid-2000s. But did you know that before that, he was a member of one of New Zealand's most popular reggae party bands? "Just for context, reggae music in New Zealand is kind of rock music in America or maybe even country," McKenzie says. "Outside Jamaica, New Zealand has the highest sales of Bob Marley records in the world. And it's the music you hear playing in the background when you're out." Since then, he's gone onto composer for film and TV projects like The Simpsons, The Muppets, Spongebob Squarepants, and more, and in 2022, he released Songs Without Jokes via Sub Pop Records. Inspired by vintage Los Angeles pop, the record showcased McKenzie sans obvious jokes, but not without levity and good humor. His new album, Freak Out City came out on August 15. Bolstered by vintage electric piano and groovy and psychedelic touches, it finds McKenzie expanding his Nilsson-esque palette with touches of Steely Dan, JJ Cale, and Todd Rundgren. McKenzie joins us on Transmissions to discuss the rabbit holes of modern life, cutting the record with studio legends like Leland Sklar, the Conchords specific brand of comedy, and shares details about his proposed Emmet Otter reboot with Ed Helms. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.

When Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords, Our Flag Means Death) started to notice the way AI had sunk its teeth into Hollywood, he decided to speak up. In his new stand-up show, “The Legend Returns,” the New Zealand actor and comedian sets out to prove that robots could never do what he's doing live on stage. Rhys joins Tom Power to tell us what's been on his mind when it comes to AI in the arts, plus, how he got his start on “Flight of the Conchords.”

You simply can't have too much Jennifer Coolidge, and Austenland (2013, available on Amazon & Apple) just let the woman who couldn't memorize lines go the F off in this pretend-Regency Era movie, where Keri Russell goes to a Jane Austen immersive resort/amusement park, falls in fake and real love, and we do a modern "Pride & Prejudice" retelling. We also get one of the "Flight of the Conchords" guys, Jane Seymour, the director of "Napoleon Dynamite," and a fake horse that is probably a donkey. This week Ari sits down with Tony Kiewel, the President of Sub Pop Records and co-founder of ORCA (Organization for Recorded Culture and Arts). Sub Pop has repped iconic artists like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Beach House, The Postal Service, Flight of the Conchords, Iron & Wine, Father John Misty, and many more. Tony's organization, ORCA, is a “think tank comprised of international independent music labels committed to increasing music's economic, social, and cultural value.” ORCA has done incredible research to demonstrate the tangible value of music in our society. ORCA also works with numerous record labels to increase financial and contractual transparency between labels and artists. In this episode, Tony shares the inner-workings of his experience at Sub Pop. He breaks down how independent record labels function in 2024 and how exactly his label invests in the future of their artists. Ari and Tony discuss how ORCA's research could help influence law and policy changes for the music industry and how the organization helps people outside of the industry understand how things work. Tony talks about what Sub Pop looks for when it comes to signing new artists, how they develop current artists on their roster, and how they go about working with undiscovered artists vs. artist on the cusp of stardom.
