Welcome back to Pizza Quest!Muhammad Abdul-Hadi's and Michael Carter's new book, "We the Pizza," just came out this week. They join us from their restaurant, Down North Pizza, in Philadelphia's Strawberry Hill neighborhood, to tell us all about it. The subtitle of the book, "Slangin' Pies and Saving Lives" is really what makes Down North Pizza unique among the many great pizzerias we feature here. The restaurant represents a larger mission, including the hiring of formerly incarcerated individuals, providing housing subsidies for those in need, and a number of other neighborhood and community projects that we discuss in this conversation with Muhammad and Michael, all designed to elevate the quality of life for the locals and to also serve as a model for, hopefully, otherDown North's across the country.  It's a work-in-progress but the launching pad for it all is the amazing and creative square-style pan pizza menu created by head chef Michael Carter and his team of cooks. The creativity on display is beautifully captured in their new book, written by Muhammad, along with co-author David Joachim, as well as beautifully energetic photos by Amurri Lauren. As you will hear here, all of the good works envisioned by Muhammad, who has been a community activist for years in Philadelphia, are made possible by the success of Down North Pizza. Join us as we discuss how to make a vision of community transformation come true, in this week's episode of Pizza Quest.

Lester Griffin launched The Foundation nearly two years ago in response to his own experiences with the criminal justice system and the support he wished he had as a youth growing up in Vancouver. The nonprofit provides resources for at-risk teens and young adults such as job development skills, mentorship and community service opportunities. It also helps adults recently released from incarceration by providing them free boxes of food, hygiene supplies and access to a team of navigators with lived experience to support their reentry into society.   The Columbian previously wrote about The Foundation and, more recently, about Griffin’s efforts to open a transitional housing complex in Vancouver in the coming weeks for people released from prison. The Restored Transitional Complex will have 14 beds, a communal living area and aims to provide stable housing for occupants for up to a year. Griffin joins us to share more details, along with Ajay Harnage, a formerly incarcerated individual who hopes to move into the new facility.

If we have learned anything this past week in Los Angeles, it's that anybody can be a hero! In response to the wildfires ravaging our hometown of Los Angeles, we wanted to sit down with Eddie Herrera Jr. Formerly an incarcerated firefighter and now a free man working for Cal Fire, Eddie has had an incredible journey of overcoming pain and shame, through hard work and dedication. He shares with us his process of evolution, and the unique path he took to becoming an institutional firefighter 16 years into his prison sentence. We've seen a ton of discourse on the internet about the heroic work of incarcerated firefighters in California, and questions about how the programs work, compensation, and what the pathways are to pursuing a career in firefighting upon release. Eddie had lots of information to share with us in response to these questions, and we are just excited today for you to get to know him. Investing in growth opportunities for our incarcerated population creates safer communities for all of us. Thank you so much Eddie!

Today he is a free man, and in this episode he is speaking to the Arizona Department of Corrections Correctional Officer Trainer Academy. He shares his story and how these future correctional officers can have a positive impact on those who are incarcerated.  It was a moving scene to witness George speaking to a room full of those who will go to work in the prison system. Neighbor's Table Podcast aims to facilitate restorative conversation around the realities of criminal justice and mass incarceration. Our prayer is that the church in America would know how to enter into these conversations, and that movement would start with listening to our neighbors. Something powerful happens when people listen to one another. We hope that love of neighbor leads to advocacy for those that society often overlooks. The Second Chances Mini-Series spotlights four people who are finding their way after incarceration and who have been able to build a career doing what they love. This mini-series are their stories. Up first is Gabrielle Perry, MPH. Thank you, Gabrielle, for sharing your very personal story with us.  In this powerful podcast episode, host Whitney Lee engages in a candid conversation with Gabrielle Perry, founder of the Thurman Perry Foundation. They discuss the challenges faced by women impacted by incarceration, discussing reentry into society, the impact of incarceration on individuals and communities, and the importance of dignity and empathy in the criminal legal system. Gabrielle shares her personal journey of resilience having faced being a caregiver at a young age, incarceration, and homelessness, and having succeeded in becoming an epidemiologist. Her life story sheds light on the systemic barriers faced by formerly incarcerated individuals. Even one day in jail uproots an entire life and the community that that life touches. Gabrielle shares too about survivors guilt after beating the odds, and recalls the moment she had to decide whether she would be upfront about her history to future employers and educators.Through their discussion, they challenge societal perceptions and biases towards those with criminal legal involvement or criminal convictions, emphasizing the need for compassion and support in the reentry process. April is Second Chance Month in the United States. During Second Chance month, we bring awareness to the journey of formerly incarcerated people returning to society. Communities throughout the United States are in dire need of a stronger reentry ecosystem for those returning from incarceration and institutionalization. Formerly incarcerated people and people with arrest records, truancy records, or other involvement with the criminal legal system face a stigma that is life long and impacts the ability to someone to secure safe and affordable housing, and to secure gainful employment or access to certain careers, among other things. Resources Mentioned:Thurman Perry Foundation: https://thurmanperryfoundation.org/The Thurman Perry Foundation is a Louisiana-based non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls impacted by incarceration. They have several signature programs including the Perry Second Chance Scholarship to fund higher education for women and girls impacted by incarceration (accepting applications through April 2024!) When you think about your company's DEI efforts, are formerly incarcerated people in that equation? Probably not, right? Most companies shy away from hiring returning citizens for fear they can't be trusted, will not deliver value, or won't show up. And you would be wrong.Today, Trent Griffin-Braaf shares his story, breaks apart negative stereotypes, and tells us about the many benefits of hiring such individuals. Trent explains how he saw transportation as a way to fight poverty and create more equity in employment, housing, and education in areas that need the most support. We talk about the challenges faced by formerly incarcerated individuals in reintegrating into society and he shares the often overlooked impact of incarceration on mental health. But most importantly, Trent shares how your organization can support returning citizens in the workplace, what programs to put in place, and how to source this untapped, extremely loyal, talent pool, and why employing such individuals benefits your business and your community. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Transportation opens up many opportunities and paths for individuals to gain further education, increase pay opportunities, gain medical access, and, in many other ways, help to reduce poverty. For mental health, you need to understand what you need to show up - everyone is different and will have a different recharge. There is strength in that. Every person should live their life like a business - with mission statements, values, and ethics. "Organizations need to identify what's the real risk with certain crimes, then eliminate certain crimes if needed. Our region is dotted with ghost towns - places that were once full of culture and community and now barely inhabited. Sometimes the change comes from environmental shifts, but sometimes the causes are man-made.  In the next part of the series “Place, Erased,” the Gulf States Newsroom's Drew Hawkins brings us to a Louisiana town where Black residents are feeling as though they must leave, because of  toxic pollution from nearby petrochemical plants. But these residents are still fighting for the remains of their displaced town. Just a few weeks ago, we brought you a conversation about deaths behind bars. Today, we're discussing the opposite: Life beyond bars.  At least, that's the title of a new photovoice exhibit that delves into the lives of formerly incarcerated people, in their own voices. The exhibit, which was created with the Formerly Incarcerated Transitions Clinic, opens today at Southern University in New Orleans.  Dr. Anjali Niyogi, a professor at Tulane University and director of the FIT Clinic, and Desiree' Morrison, a participant in the project, tell us more about the exhibit and the message they hope it sends. It's officially November, a time when harvest-centric events celebrate Louisianans' love of food.  What better time to talk about pigs – a source of food integral to Louisiana's traditions? For centuries, pig roasts have been a way for Louisiana communities to ensure an animal was used in its entirety – and that a whole community would be fed. From boudin to barbeque, pork has been part of culinary traditions passed through the generations across the state. Jessica B. Harris, author of “High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America” tells us more about the history of pig roasts and pork-eating in Louisiana.
