If you live in South Louisiana, you probably saw the headlines last month raising alarm about the region's vulnerability to climate change. Like this one in The Guardian: ‘Point of no return': New Orleans relocation must start now due to sea level rise, study finds. WWNO and WRKF reporters Aubri Juhasz and Eva Tesfaye have been looking at the study, media coverage and how locals are responding. They sat down to talk about it with one another. The sequel to the Oscar-nominated documentary “Time,” titled “Time II: Unfinished Business,” premiered Friday on Amazon Prime. It picks up where the first leaves off, after Sibil “Fox Rich” Richardson's husband, Rob, is freed from Angola after serving 21 years for armed robbery. Fox was also involved in the robbery and served seven years in prison. The film documents the couple's fight for the release of their nephew, an accomplice who is still serving time. It also highlights their fight for justice reform to ensure punishments fit the crime. “Fox Rich” and Rob Richardson join us with more.—Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Bev Livingston speaks with her guest, Lora McDonald, Executive Director of Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity, better known as “MORE Squared”.  Lora McDonald has served as a social worker in metropolitan Kansas City for three decades. In her early career, she worked in a Missouri state prison; licensed foster and adoptive families; and served youth who were street homeless. McDonald's career evolved to developing and implementing programs, ranging from crisis intervention with adoptive families to creating community gardens; more recently, McDonald was the architect of the Second Chance Program for people returning from incarceration.  While designing Second Chance, she would organize the Kansas City Metropolitan Reentry Coalition in order to address policies that impeded the success of people with criminal histories.  Around the same time, she was introduced to MORE2 and the National Leadership Training from the Gamaliel Network. She has been Ex. Dir of More² since 2012, and during that time, the organization has won many victories, expanded into Kansas, and sustained a significant ongoing public presence through a myriad of issues. Lora McDonald was the lead organizer who beat back a plan to collapse KCPS for an all-charter school model; she wrote the bill and led statewide organizing to win food stamps for people with drug convictions; and drove the campaign that established the first tenant's rights in Kansas City, Missouri with the passage of Healthy Homes. MORE2 is recognized as one of the leading organizations for police reform in the metro, specifically focused on accountability and transparency in Kansas City, Kansas, and local control of Kansas City Police Department. Bev and Lora will talk about the More² Gubernatorial Forum, Voting Rights for Formerly Incarcerated people and on June 2nd, a Jail Bill of Rights coming up before the legislature in Jackson County for a final vote. Then, Host Keith Brown El will talk with our NEW Host, Justice Johnson, about jails in Jackson County MO and Kansas City MO as we try to keep listeners informed of the changes being made in our local incarceration system. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

FIGJAM members use their voices and experiences to change community attitudes and push through barriers of stigma and discrimination. We discussed strip searching in prisons. Strip searching is an unnecessary, degrading and deeply harmful practice that should be banned in law by all governments, according to a new report released by the Human Rights Law Centre, Flat Out and FIGJAM. The report was discussed in detail highlighting violations of human rights in prison. FIGJAM's campaign was also discussed.

On this week's Truth to Power, we tackle the issue of higher education's role in reintegrating the formerly incarcerated into society. On Monday, Sept. 29th, at the University of Louisville's Ekstrom Library, the UofL Liberal Studies program presented this event on "Reimagining Public Safety: Transforming Public Universities into Pathways of Reintegration and Repair" with philosopher and higher education leader Dr. Brady Heiner, the Founder and former Executive Director (2016-2022) of Project Rebound at Cal State Fullerton (https://www.fullerton.edu/rebound/). Dr. Heiner was also the Founding Executive Director and Executive Committee Chair of the CSU Project Rebound Consortium (2019-2023), which provided leadership and oversight for the statewide expansion of Project Rebound programs across eighteen CSU campuses. In this public lecture, Dr. Heiner argued that public universities must be reimagined as civic infrastructures of care, accountability, and belonging. Drawing on his experience building and scaling programs that support thousands of formerly incarcerated students across 18 campuses in the California State University system, Heiner outlines how universities can repair social dislocation, reduce incarceration, and rebuild communities harmed by punitive and extractive systems. Up top, I promise that this episode is not more politicized dribble. I hear it everywhere, every day, and I just will not make room for it in this show. Instead we'll be discussing the candidates who are so often looked over.   Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.   My guest today is David DeLong. David is on a mission to show the US, and by proxy other countries, that we do not have the labor shortage that we think we do; by introducing us to alternative options.  For example: 1 in 8 adult men in the US has been convicted of a felony, and that history alone eliminates you in most job application software. However, a one-time offender (with more than five years since release) is statistically far less likely to break the law or be arrested than any other employee in the company.  So let's reevaluate the opinion with this new data: Maybe you want more people with one-off convictions in your company, since they are likely safer and less likely to leave your team if given a chance.  ( Https://Www.ReadHiddenTalent.Com )  ( Https://Www.SmartWorkforceStrategies.Com )  ( https://a.co/d/gCET55S take you to: Www.Amazon.Com "Hidden Talent: How to Employ Refugees, the Formerly Incarcerated & People With Disabilities" )  ( https://www.youtube.com/@daviddelong4246 will take you to: Www.YouTube.Com - "David DeLong YouTube Homepage" )  Let's hire the overlooked!  So what do you think after hearing this? Would you advocate for any of the previous people to join your team? Why or why not?   In ranking news... July is upon us, and the global ranks are as follows: 1. The United States, with Wisconsin, California, and Oregon at the top.  2. England of the United Kingdom, just barely over Scotland.  3. Ireland.  4. Australia, with Queensland ahead for now.  5. Myanmar.  That's it for this week! Have a great week, a great weekend, and I'll see you all back here next week for another new episode!  Until the next episode, pretty please do all the things to help the show: rate, review, like, and subscribe.  Reach out to DumbEnoughPodcast@Gmail.Com or on any social media if you want to reach me personally.  Most importantly, Stay Dumb!  #Podcast #Education #SecondChance #Incarcerated #Disabled #Immigrant #Hiring #Workforce

Welcome back to Pizza Quest!Muhammad Abdul-Hadi's and Michael Carter's new book, "We the Pizza," just came out this week. They join us from their restaurant, Down North Pizza, in Philadelphia's Strawberry Hill neighborhood, to tell us all about it. The subtitle of the book, "Slangin' Pies and Saving Lives" is really what makes Down North Pizza unique among the many great pizzerias we feature here. The restaurant represents a larger mission, including the hiring of formerly incarcerated individuals, providing housing subsidies for those in need, and a number of other neighborhood and community projects that we discuss in this conversation with Muhammad and Michael, all designed to elevate the quality of life for the locals and to also serve as a model for, hopefully, otherDown North's across the country.  It's a work-in-progress but the launching pad for it all is the amazing and creative square-style pan pizza menu created by head chef Michael Carter and his team of cooks. The creativity on display is beautifully captured in their new book, written by Muhammad, along with co-author David Joachim, as well as beautifully energetic photos by Amurri Lauren. As you will hear here, all of the good works envisioned by Muhammad, who has been a community activist for years in Philadelphia, are made possible by the success of Down North Pizza. Join us as we discuss how to make a vision of community transformation come true, in this week's episode of Pizza Quest.

Lester Griffin launched The Foundation nearly two years ago in response to his own experiences with the criminal justice system and the support he wished he had as a youth growing up in Vancouver. The nonprofit provides resources for at-risk teens and young adults such as job development skills, mentorship and community service opportunities. It also helps adults recently released from incarceration by providing them free boxes of food, hygiene supplies and access to a team of navigators with lived experience to support their reentry into society.   The Columbian previously wrote about The Foundation and, more recently, about Griffin’s efforts to open a transitional housing complex in Vancouver in the coming weeks for people released from prison. The Restored Transitional Complex will have 14 beds, a communal living area and aims to provide stable housing for occupants for up to a year. Griffin joins us to share more details, along with Ajay Harnage, a formerly incarcerated individual who hopes to move into the new facility.

If we have learned anything this past week in Los Angeles, it's that anybody can be a hero! In response to the wildfires ravaging our hometown of Los Angeles, we wanted to sit down with Eddie Herrera Jr. Formerly an incarcerated firefighter and now a free man working for Cal Fire, Eddie has had an incredible journey of overcoming pain and shame, through hard work and dedication. He shares with us his process of evolution, and the unique path he took to becoming an institutional firefighter 16 years into his prison sentence. We've seen a ton of discourse on the internet about the heroic work of incarcerated firefighters in California, and questions about how the programs work, compensation, and what the pathways are to pursuing a career in firefighting upon release. Eddie had lots of information to share with us in response to these questions, and we are just excited today for you to get to know him. Investing in growth opportunities for our incarcerated population creates safer communities for all of us. Thank you so much Eddie!

Should Biden issue a pardon to Donald Trump for his federal crimes? Will that help with America's standing or do we have 99 OTHER problems and Trump ain't one?! There have been some Republicans and Democrats calling for a preemptive Trump pardon. Is this kind of grace-giving exactly what's wrong with the Democratic Party?     Also, can Trump vote now that he's been convicted? In Florida, where Trump lives, folks with felonies have limited voting rights and Trump does not qualify. BUT Florida's Governor, Ron DeSantis, has signaled that he'll bend (READ: Break!) the law to allow Trump to vote.
