My guest for today is Rachel Gainer of Rachel Rebuilt and our conversation today is all about personifying the inner critic. Many of us try to categorize it as totally negative and think that we need to ignore that voice in order to overcome it. However, Rachel encourages us to “rewire” the inner critic, exploring new ways to interact with it and more deeply honor your intuition. Rachel is a life coach for working mothers and emerging entrepreneurs, helping her clients tackle the inner stories that are holding them back from achieving what they want to achieve. She also hosts her own podcast called Life Rebuilt -- check it out in the links below! In this episode we discuss: Turning your inner critic into your “inner ally” can help view that voice as someone who just wants to protect us from failure. It can be difficult to distinguish between true intuition and the bad intentions of the inner critic. A helpful tactic can be asking yourself: “Does this voice want me to grow or to stay small?” Try to visualize the character your inner voice is taking on -- is it the bully, the boss, the spiritual guide? If you're pushing yourself so hard that you're burning out, that might be a sign to ease up on yourself and reevaluate. Find the balance of pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone 10-15% -- this is where you will find the best results, rather than simply working harder all the time. Dread comes from an external expectation, whereas fear comes from an internal expectation. The holiday season is a beautiful and magical time for most of us--but it can also be a time of loneliness and heartache for those who have lost loved ones. This episode is a reminder of the little things we can do to reach out to those who are grieving during this time of year. Rachel Gainer, a mother of five including an angel baby, shares her experience of losing her 2-month-old daughter, Daphne. She talks about the meaningful ways that family and friends supported her during that enormous loss and in the years since. Though this topic may seem a bit heavy, the episode is full of hope, love, and goodness, and it is sure to give you great ideas if you've ever wondered just what to do for someone who is hurting. Don't forget the invitation at the end of this episode: Please reach out this week to someone in your own life who could use some extra support and love as the holidays approach. Many of us know friends and family members who have lost precious loved ones. During those heartbreaking times, it's so hard to know what to say and do to show our love and support. On today's podcast, we hear from a mother who has been there and has so much wisdom to share. Several years ago, Rachel Gainer lost her two-month-old daughter, Daphne, and was engulfed in sorrow. She talks about her journey to "rebuilding" her sense of self after Daphne's death, and she shares invaluable insight into what it's like to grieve and what we can do to serve those around us who are hurting. Listen in as she teaches us how to... 1) Reach out to the grieving family, no matter how long it has been.2) Offer a specific service or gift based on your talents and interests.3) Speak with sensitivity. This is an episode that everyone should listen to--because, at some point, we will all inevitably need to support someone whom we love who is grieving. You won't want to miss Rachel's ideas for specific, heartfelt gifts we can send and meaningful words we can say. You'll also want to hear all about her angel baby, Daphne. We have pivotal experiences in our lives in which we witness quintessential moments of love & sacrifice, but also grief. Sometimes those that experience them with us process the experience very differently than we do . We all know the amazing benefits of exercise: mental acuity, emotional release, increased strength, more consistent metabolism, confidence, and on and on. But we don't often talk about the effects of abusing exercise, a trap we can all so subtly fall into. This can happen through both over- and under-use, although much of this episode it devoted to abuse through too much (or too intense, too often) exercising. Alongside my two expert guests--Meg Miles and Rachel Gainer--we discuss it all. How fitness is a powerful tool for good and so essential to our well-being; but also how abusing it can negatively alter our lives and become all-consuming. Learn through our discussion how to properly make exercise an important part of your life without letting it control you. In this episode, there is a wealth of science, personal stories, and loads of take-aways. Our goal? To empower the listeners to view their bodies--and fitness--with love and "healthy enthusiasm." "I had to find a new way. And I had to stop believing that I could do it all by myself, that I could get through everything on my own." Rachel Gainer was a lifelong perfectionist, until her world fell apart. She struggled through infertility, she let "getting healthy" go too far, she was overworked and not taking care of herself, and then she and her husband suffered two devastating losses in a row: a failed adoption and then the death of their baby girl. After adopting three more children, Rachel decided she needed to rebuild her life, and for her that meant surrendering control, getting rid of shame, and learning to love herself. Rachel shares about how harshly she viewed herself for so many years, what her true motives were behind striving to be perfect, what she learned from the lowest lows a parent can experience, how her daughter's death pushed her to rethink the way she viewed herself and her body, and how it's taken her six years of hard work to begin to see herself becoming the woman she wanted to be. You'll love what lessons this woman has to share with you, and her great bravery in her willingness to share her struggles and her weaknesses.
