Life can feel overwhelmingly chaotic, and I've often found myself needing help to navigate through it. During these tumultuous times, I've learned that small, consistent habits are crucial. By embracing habits that are personal, seasonal, and flexible, I can help myself feel more grounded and less overwhelmed. Recently, my life has been filled with professional demands like editing a book and preparing for a conference, all while managing the complexities of family life. To cope, I've been playing the piano more often—it's a soothing escape that helps me reset my mind. I've also focused on maintaining strict boundaries with my time, like adhering to a rhythm schedule for work and home. Weekends are for unwinding with family, not for catching up on work tasks. By prioritizing rest and personal interests, I can show up as my best self, not in spite of challenges, but because of them. This episode is a “Remember When,” a monthly episode to honor About Progress turning 10 years old. Looking back at 2016, I'm filled with a mix of nostalgia and awe at the start of my journey with About Progress. That year marked the beginning of a new chapter, not just for my blog and podcast, but for my personal growth. My first foray into blogging, followed by launching the podcast in November, was a leap into the unknown, full of technical challenges and self-doubt, yet it ignited a passion for creating a community based on real, unvarnished stories. Today, as I look back to where it all began, I'm proud of the progress and the supportive community we've built, proving that life truly is about progress, not perfection. Navigating the labyrinth of personal finance can often feel overwhelming, especially with societal pressures and the constant barrage of advice from various "experts." I myself have struggled with the anxiety of managing budgets and feeling as though I'm constantly missing the mark. Thankfully, Rebecca Palmer, a seasoned financial advisor, has shared insights that have reframed the way I view money. She highlighted that much of the stress stems not from personal failure, but from the systems that aren't designed to work with our unique lifestyles. In this episode we learn how to shift focus from attempting to perfect rigid systems to creating personalized systems that truly support our financial goals, leading to a more peaceful and grounded financial life. What if joy in marriage isn't about chasing happiness, but embracing courage? Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife's enlightening perspective reshapes our understanding of joy—not as mere happiness but as a deeper, more embodied openness to love and goodness, even amidst life's challenges. This kind of joy is interwoven with eros love—an expansive, soul-reaching connection that pushes us beyond our comfort zones and into a realm of growth and self-discovery. In my conversation with Dr. Finlayson-Fife, we explored how marriage becomes a fertile ground for joy—not by eliminating our differences but by choosing to love through them. By asking ourselves what we already know we need to do differently, we unlock the potential for profound personal growth and deeper marital intimacy, ultimately steering our relationships toward genuine joy. As I sat glued to the couch with my flu-stricken voice, I found myself reflecting on my goals for 2026 with unexpected waves of fear and overwhelm. Goals and I have had a complicated history; they once defined my life, yet I stepped away from them for nearly a decade. There's so much ahead—turning 40, the podcast's 10th anniversary, and a book launch, among other things. My focus for the year is to embrace rest and hobbies, ensuring my Do Something List reflects these needs. Join me as we embark on this year of growth and exploration together! For years, I battled with the idea that being ambitious made me appear too eager and self-serving. But I've learned that real ambition should ebb and flow, much like nature itself. It's okay to redefine ambition as a desire for more life, while also allowing ourselves periods of rest and recalibration. From my discussion with Amina AlTai, it's clear that ambition must be intentional and aligned with our true values. Releasing the need for perfection and instead embracing recovery and personal growth has been transformative. I've seen firsthand that our bodies often signal when our ambitions are misaligned, acting as guides toward a more sustainable path. As we lean into our strengths and gifts, let's transform ambition from a toxic force into a purposeful journey that expands our lives and those around us. Learn more from Amina and get her book HERE. As we step into this new year, there's a part of us that remembers the dreams we once had. I'm on a mission to invite that dreaming girl inside us back into our lives. We often let responsibilities, fears, and past failures dim our dreams, but it's time to change that. Dreams are not only powerful, but they're also necessary for living a meaningful life. Whether they're big or small, our dreams matter, and it's vital that we give them space to grow and evolve alongside us. Let's embrace our dreams and walk this path together, knowing that the growth and transformation along the way are just as important as where we end up. Here's to a year of embracing possibilities and finding fulfillment, regardless of how big or small those dreams may seem. In this personal growth podcast clip, licensed therapist Kimberley Quinlan, LMFT explains how anxiety quietly shapes our behaviors through avoidance, perfectionism, people-pleasing, reassurance seeking, and rumination. Have you ever considered that the most profound growth happens in the stillness of life's winters? Katherine May's concept of "Wintering" challenges us to view these quiet times not as setbacks but as necessary periods for renewal and introspection. It's about recognizing that slowing down and stepping back can rejuvenate our spirits. By appreciating these quiet seasons, we allow space for personal growth and the reinforcement of our core values. Reflecting on these ideas made me realize how often I've resisted slowing down, seeing it as counterproductive. Yet, in embracing rest and retreat, we can find contentment in being enough, even amid apparent inertia. These quiet times are invitations to connect deeply, both with ourselves and with those around us, paving the way for transformative change and a renewed sense of purpose. In this conversation with Kolbie Blume, we explored how embracing imperfection can lead to deeper fulfillment in our creative pursuits. We discussed the concept of focusing on tiny moments of wonder rather than the final product, highlighting that the magic lies in the process, not the outcome. Our chat reminded me of the importance of investing in oneself and making room for personal joys, despite the everyday trade-offs and responsibilities that often overshadow our own needs. Rediscovering hobbies and allowing ourselves to be beginners opens doors to joy and self-acceptance. It's about learning to prioritize ourselves on our list of responsibilities, exploring creativity without fear, and finding joy in the messiness of life. Remember, it's not about achieving perfection but about valuing the process and the personal growth that comes with immersing yourself in something you love, just as it is. Through this interview and my personal journey, I realized that being messy is, indeed, part of the magic. Celebrate 9 years of About Progress by submitting to our annual Favorite Things Giveaway! In a recent podcast episode, I walked through my quest to rediscover personal interests and prioritize them amid the whirlwind of daily life. Like many women, I'm navigating the busy demands of motherhood and work while yearning for outlets that are just for me—without needing them to be productive or result in a tangible outcome. I realize that it's not always easy to carve out these moments, but it's becoming clear that hobbies are more than a want—they're a need. The challenge lies in making the time without feeling guilty for setting aside the never-ending list of tasks. I'm committing to at least try, even if it means re-prioritizing my weekends. If you're in a similar boat, I invite you to join me in this journey of self-discovery and openly puzzle through the “how” alongside me. After all, stepping into hobbies is an investment in ourselves, a way to find joy amidst the busyness, and maybe even a step towards easing the funks we sometimes fall into. I've always emphasized the beauty and sustainability of small daily habits for self-improvement. But occasionally, our self-care journey demands a more significant leap to reboot our personal development. On this episode I shared how my recent solo trip to London was a radical act of self-care for me. These experiences, whether starting daily habits or planning an adventure abroad, define how to stop being a perfectionist and enrich our journeys toward how to feel happy. So, my call to you is straightforward: consider your own big step in self-care—it's time to reclaim, reconnect, and embrace your true self. In this episode I had the incredible opportunity to chat with yoga therapist and women's mentor, Sarah Horne, about how women's bodies function on a 28-day rhythm. It was enlightening to learn how embracing this natural cycle can impact our personal development, allowing us to harness the wisdom of self-care for mothers and others like us. Sometimes, striving for self-improvement can feel like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, especially when we ignore our bodies' natural rhythms. Sarah emphasizes the power of slowing down, a vital antidote to the perfectionism many of us face, showing us how this self-compassion can lead to a richer, more balanced life.
