Full Transcript Below: When Christmas Doesn’t Look the Way You HopedBy: Michelle Lazurek Bible Reading:“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” Proverbs 13:16 I'm not coming home for Christmas. These words hit hard when my husband and I realized my son would not be home for Christmas this year. In his third year of college, he has a girlfriend and wants to spend Christmas with her and her family. While we love who he's with and want him to have a good relationship with her family, it hurts us deeply that we won't get to see him during one of our favorite times of the year. For me, my favorite part of Christmas is not opening presents for myself, but watching my children open their presents on Christmas morning. It just won’t be the same without him. If you are grieving the loss of a loved one or a loved one won't be at Christmas like you'd hoped, you are not alone. Many of us will have a different type of Christmas this year. Sometimes it's because family and loved ones can't make the trip to see you. For others, it's a financial issue, and relatives can't afford to buy presents like they used to. A great way to make the most of the holidays, even if they don't look like you remember, is to create new traditions. While it's OK to have feelings like anger and sadness over the loss of years past, the best way to forge ahead is to make new memories in this new chapter in your life. For us, it means making the most of having our daughter home in the few remaining years she has left with us. It also means connecting with our son through Zoom or phone so we can be together for the holidays. It is difficult to hold on to hope when it seems like all is lost. The above verse tells us that when we hold out hope for something that seems far beyond our reach, it can feel as if our life is falling apart. However, God is a God of miracles. He can turn any situation to his advantage. Above all, he can respond to requests, even the most difficult ones, in a moment. The verse above reminds us not to give up hope. Keep on praying. Keep on asking God to answer your prayer request, even if it has been years. Christmas is a time for miracles! Our ability to still pray for situations that seem nearly impossible tests our faith, stretching and growing us spiritually. God wants us to rely on him and ask him in faith for anything. Although we may not always get what we ask for, it is essential that we still ask and pray, trusting that God will allow the situation to turn out exactly as he wants. Consider new ways to make the most of your holiday. Make contact with your relatives who won't be able to make the trip. Offer to pay for gifts for a loved one who is financially strapped this year. Observe the true meaning of the season by being the hands and feet of Christ, especially during the holiday season. Although the holidays are meant to be joyful, they aren't for everyone. Sometimes people grieve deep losses during the holidays. Just because someone is suffering doesn't mean you can't help them make the most of it. If you're the one grieving, lean on others for help. Don't be afraid to ask for prayer or for help from those who can offer it. It may mean your family members bring the side dishes while you provide the main entree for the holiday meal. Perhaps it means not giving gifts this year. Whatever you need to do, do it to make your holiday the best it can be. Even if it's not the way you hoped, do what you need to do. Christmas ultimately is not about gifts or extravagance. Instead, it is about spending time with loved ones who are near you. It is also a great way to connect with those who are far away. If your relatives can't come to you, go to them and make the effort to see them. Pray and ask God for everything, even the situations that seem hopeless. Don't allow your heart to be troubled. Instead, make the most of your holiday season and do what you can to connect with loved ones and observe the real meaning of the season. Father, let us be people who remember who you are and what the holiday season is for. Let us remember that Christmas is not about gifts, but instead about being connected to family. Let us reach out to communicate with family members who cannot make it this season. Amen. Highlights from this episode: Understanding the Why: Picky eating isn't just stubbornness. It often stems from sensory sensitivities, past negative experiences, or a need for predictability. Kids aren't being difficult—their bodies are protecting them. Red Flags to Watch For: If your child shows signs of weight loss, growth issues, drops food categories, or frequently gags or chokes, it's time to seek professional help. Remember: asking for support is a win, not a failure! No Pressure Plate System: You choose what, when, and where food is served; your child chooses if and how much to eat. Offer two to three safe foods and one or two "learning foods" for gentle exposure, plus a "no thank you bowl" for stress-free refusals. Calm Bodies First: Try a 2–3 minute pre-meal routine—wall push-ups, sipping water through a straw, sitting with good posture—to help kids feel regulated and ready to eat. Food Chaining & Texture Ladders: Move from safe favorites to new foods in baby steps, adjusting one property (size, shape, temperature) at a time. Celebrate curiosity and every little try! Making Meals Manageable: Deconstruct dishes, keep sensory overload low (dim lights, reduce kitchen noise), and offer dips or fun utensils to encourage engagement. Handling Family Gatherings: Stand your ground! Share your approach if you're questioned, and remember—you know your child best. As WORT celebrates its 50th birthday this year, we've been reflecting on what the last half-century has meant to our community. But on today's show, host Douglas Haynes asks, what will the next 50 years look like? He's joined by the next generation of radio leaders, Olivia O’Callaghan and Daniel Stein from WSUM and Ted Hyngstrom from the Daily Cardinal who produces the weekly feature, Cardinal Call, on WORT. Record numbers of UW Madison students are signing up to volunteer at WSUM, say O'Callahan and Stein. There's interest from students wanting to play music on air and from listeners wanting to engage in digital content, like DJ spotlights and vinyl takeovers. Hyngstrom speculates that there's such a demand for radio because it's easy to consume, you can just put on your headphones and get music or news on demand. There may be something to the generational generalizations about Gen Z-ers ditching the algorithm in favor of analog media, from cassettes to radio. O'Callahan says it's rewarding to be a part of a medium with a long history. And Stein says that even if the medium is an old one, people are consuming radio content in very 21st century ways, by listening on apps, by setting reminders for their favorite shows, replaying favorite shows, and listening on the go.  Stein says that “radio is a big market for people who are looking for an itch that's not already being scratched.” Whereas AI is zapping people's creativity, people tune into WSUM or WORT “because they want to hear something authentic.” College Radio and community radio are shaping local culture, and that work excites these three students. Hyngstrom says that the work of “making something” motivates him, like an art form would. He's driven to work on human-centered stories shaped by expert knowledge, like the Daily Cardinal's recent AI issue. O'Callahan says that getting to know show hosts contributes to the intimacy of the listening experience of radio. She got connected to college radio as a way to meet people, and now she's getting professional experience by applying classroom work in a real-world capacity. And from multimedia content to dynamic programming, our guests envision a bright and innovative future for radio. Ted Hyngstrom is the producer of Cardinal Call, a collaboration between WORT and UW-Madison student newspaper “The Daily Cardinal.” As Podcast Director, he has overseen a comprehensive overhaul of how the Cardinal approaches audio journalism, working to integrate podcasting and audio journalism into the newsroom while simultaneously supporting multimedia storytelling. Academically, Ted is a sophomore Honors college student at UW-Madison studying Journalism and Political Science. Someday, he hopes to work as a local news multimedia journalist. Olivia O’Callaghan is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying journalism and sociology. She joined WSUM Student Radio her freshman year, and worked as a Traffic Director in 2024 before being elected to serve as Station Manager for the 2025 calendar year. She hosts a music show at 10pm on Wednesday nights called “Kitchen Sink.” Daniel Stein is the Program Director at WSUM where he oversees the content broadcast on their FM and online signals, develops show schedules for nearly 200 active members, and enforces federal broadcast regulations. Monday, 15 December 2025   then he need not honor his father or mother.' Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. Matthew 15:6   “And no, not he should honor his father or his mother. And you invalidated God's commandment through your tradition” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus began explaining the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees in regard to the issue of tending to one's parents as commanded by the law. He continues that, saying, “And no, not he should honor his father or his mother.”   By the leaders' granting the people to take their gifts and dedicate them in this fashion, a practice that was derived from tradition, they created a rift in people's proper adherence to God's prescription. That is stated by Jesus with the words, “And you invalidated God's commandment through your tradition.”   The word akuroó, to invalidate, is first seen here. It will be used in the comparable passage in Mark 7:13 and then only again in Galatians 3 concerning the surety of the covenant of promise given to Abraham that is not invalidated by the temporary Law of Moses –   “And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul [akuroó] the covenant that was confirmed before by Godin Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.” Galatians 3:17, 18   These leaders were essentially saying, “Isn't it more important to give your gifts to God than to keep them around, taking up space, cluttering up your lives and your homes?” They knew full well that by convincing people they were doing a service to God that they would rush to give. Never mind that these leaders would be on the receiving end of such gifts in one way or another and that the parents would be left unattended to in their old age.   The perverse nature of the doctrine is laid bare by Jesus, shaming the people for their greed, dishonesty, and outright hypocrisy. God doesn't need their gifts. Rather, what He wants from His people is obedience to His prescriptions.   “Hear, O My people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you; I am God, your God! 8 I will not rebuke you for your sacrifices Or your burnt offerings, Which are continually before Me. 9 I will not take a bull from your house, Nor goats out of your folds. 10 For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the mountains, And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. 12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you; For the world is Mine, and all its fullness. 13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, Or drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High. 15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” Psalm 50:7-15   Life application: Do you ever hear preachers or teachers making an appeal for donations that includes catchphrases like seed offering, increase, multiply, tithe, tithing, tithes, pleasing to God, firstfruits, opening the storehouses of heaven, and so on?   If you hear these things, be sure not to give to such people. If you are giving to receive in return, you are giving for the wrong reason. If you are giving because someone told you that you are going to make God happy by giving them money, you are giving for the wrong reason.   God is happy with your faith, praise, and thanksgiving. He doesn't need your money, even if His people do. If His people do, and you are able to give, then do so without expecting anything in return. Be cheerful in your giving, or don't give. Giving grudgingly will not lead to future rewards.   Glorious Lord God, we come before You to praise You for who You are, to thank You for Your grace and tender mercies, and to glorify You for the salvation You have granted to us through simple belief in the full, final, finished, and forever work of Jesus Christ. We believe and we thank You. All praises to You, O God. Amen.
