The final conclusion to our Death Discography series. On this one we give our opinions and ranking of the final Death album - The Sound of Perseverance as well as some final thoughts on the discography as a whole. Then we have an interview with Richard Christy who played drums on The Sound of Perseverance and finish things out with thoughts from Jason Hundey (One of the Co-hosts for the great Requiem Metal Podcast). Jason talked about the discography as a whole, what makes Death special, the importance of Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance to him, Chuck's lyrics on those albums, and a lot more. Andrew got lost in the timestream this week, but we learned from the best that when you lose a founding member to cosmic forces beyond your control, you gotta solider on with new friends. So here we are, doing our first annual discussion of the first Excalibur Annual, accompanied in this heroic endeavor by educator and fellow podcaster Jason Hundey, co-host of the Requiem Metal Podcast! We hash out important topics like: why Annuals? Can we give 1993's newest Dark Elf enough heat to make Jason's Khaos trading card worth more than the paper it's printed on? And, most importantly: is this comic book metal??
This is the second half of our conversation with the Requiem Metal podcast about the grindcore band Discordance Axis. In this half we dig into the way they incorporate images and concepts from Neon Genesis Evangelion. We also talk about Discordance Axis's spiritual successor Gridlink, who frequently referenced bullet video games, mecha anime, and the War on Terror in their work. Special thanks to Jon Chang for his interview, and to Jason Hudney and Mark Rudolph from Requiem. Requiem is one of the most in-depth and thoroughly researched msuic history shows around. Neon Genesis Evangelion is a key lyrical infleucne on critically acclaimed grindcore band Discordance Axis, especially thier final record The Inalienable Dreamless. Ian and Joseph deep dive through the band's discography (including their spiritual successors Gridlink) with the help of Requiem Metal Podcast. In this episode of Art and Science Punks Kate and Rob discuss day-to-day encounters we turn into games and what we try to learn along the way. Kate and Rob also share an art pick and a science pick this week: one about a ground breaking researcher, the other about a kind and joyful painter. Here is the 29th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with illustrator and podcaster Mark Rudolph. Mark is half the team behind the Requiem Metal Podcast, which he does with his friend Jason Hundey. I've been a fan of their podcast for years, and it's no secret that Requiem provided the blueprint for this one. In addition to that, Mark provides art for Decibel Magazine, and has put out a few metal themed graphic novels inspired by the music of Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost. We did the interview in the "VIP Area" behind the merch booths at Maryland Deathfest 2015, while a reunited Solstice threatened to drown us out from a nearby stage. We talked about Mark's beginnings in the zine world, the genesis of the Requiem podcast, and some of his recent illustration work. Since the interview was conducted last summer, one of the big questions was, "Will there by more Requiem?" Of course, in the intervening months Mark and Jason resurrected the podcast, and have released a slew of new shows. I wish I could have released this episode while that news was still fresh and exclusive, but time got away from me. What can I say - I take after my heroes. My thanks again to Mark for taking the time to talk to me, and to you for listening. We love Alice in Chains! And we were so inspired by Requiem Metal Podcast’s Alice in Chains Episode 164 that we wanted to do our own tribute to Layne Staley and the boys. Consider this a companion to the Requiem episode, and we guarantee that there’s no overlap in songs. AIC was the most metal […]
This year, both of us attended Maryland Deathfest to witness the metal event of the year. Not only did we join Chris Dick of Decibel for band sets, Bergers cookies, and late-night chili dogs, but we also met Mark Rudolph of Requiem Metal Podcast to talk shop about podcasting. The weather in Baltimore was unseasonably […]
