At long last Shannon gets to talk about the book she's been planning on since the last Halloween episode — The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. We first discuss the Aesthetic Movement of the 19th century and a tiny bit of the life of Oscar Wilde before we jump into the book itself. Then Bryce gifts you with an abbreviated history of metal music. Get a notepad ready to take notes because he gives you a LOT of information! Happy Halloween! - Accept-nummeret “Fast as a Shark” sætter nye standarder for speedet metal, og tænder ild i brødrene Stützer i bandet Devils Symphony. - Lars Ulrich og James Hetfield har rekrutteret et par nye medlemmer til Metallica, Cliff Burton og Dave Mustaine, og skaber stor opmærksomhed med demoen “No Life ‘Til Leather”. - Iron Maiden udgiver deres første album med Bruce Dickinson, ”The Number of the Beast”, der går rent ind hos metalfolket.
- Jungersen og Stützer jubler over Ozzys andet soloalbum Diary of a Madman og Motörheads vaskeægte livealbum No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith. I Helsinki albumdebuterer Motley Crües åndsbrødre i Hanoi Rocks. Sidstnævnte udgiver endda hele to album i 1981.
This week, we talk about the bizarre, the unusual and unsettling, the creepy and uncharacteristic… And what really makes it terrifying and disturbing is that these are true stories… Be prepared to be shocked! These are Rocktastrophes: true tragedies that occurred in the real world of rock n' punk n' metal. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection, an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big shocking thing.Songs this week include:For Squirrels – “Superstar” from Example (1995)The Gits – “It All Dies Away” from Frenching The Bully (1992)Death Angel – “Stagnant” from Act III (1990)Reagan Youth – “Heavy Metal Shuffle” from A Collection Of Pop Classics (1994)The Exploding Hearts – “Still Crazy” from Guitar Romantic (2021)The Yellow Dogs – “Until The Night Was Done” from Upper Class Complexity (2012) Armegeddon – “Brother Ego” from Armegeddon (1975)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/https://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

"Back in Black", mens Led Zeppelin går i opløsning.
40 years ago this week our nation was under assault by forces of evil. These forces were conspiring to control artists and take away Americans' constitutionally-guaranteed rights to freedom of expression. In the halls of the United States Senate, three righteous warriors - Frank Zappa, Dee Snider and John Denver - stood up for artists and free speech by directly confronting the evil in power. The evil in power were the so-called "Washington Wives" - spouses to powerful Senators that were weighing a bipartisan violation of the first amendment to the constitution. The head of this clan otherwise known as the PMRC, or the Parents Music Resource Center, was the dreaded Tipper Gore. In the name of "protecting children" Tipper and her friends aimed for censorship. In the process, they gave us a weird but fascinating playlist they dubbed "The Filthy Fifteen" - fifteen songs they deemed to be obscene. This playlist is worth another look, and ATTT has decided to enlist our friends the ATTT All-Stars to give it our patented Worst To First treatment. Shannon Hurley, Gabe Scalone, Joe Lavelle, Matt Dinan and David Daskal were on hand to rank these songs and wax poetic about what a fucked up time the Reagan years were. Formed in 1981 – the same year as Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Mercyful Fate, and Sodom – Dark Angel earned a devoted cult following as pioneers and architects of the burgeoning thrash metal sound. The genre-defining We Have Arrived (1985), Darkness Descends (1986), Leave Scars (1989), and Time Does Not Heal (1991) helped shape a musical movement alongside their peers. @darkangelthrash #darkangel #thrashmetal #oldschoolthrashmetal #thrashlegends #brutallydelicious #podcast #podcast #metal #interview #genehoglan #drummer #musician #newmusicrelease Learn more about your ad choices. Jordan gave me a simple prompt: "How about a show about heavy metal?" and now it has turned into three episodes covering early 80s US heavy metal, late 80s heavy metal, and now, heavy metal across the world through the 1980s. This week we're talking about the Canadian, German, Swedish, Danish, and English heavy metal bands that defined the 80s and cemented a then-nascent sound into the foundations of the music we love today. We got Thor, we got Heavy Load, we got Raven, we got Mercyful Fate, we got Warlock, and we got Helloween. Folks... it's a good one. The big streaming platforms have been giving us absolute hell lately so if you would like to hear this episode in it's full, uncensored glory, go over to the TovH Patreon and give us a couple bucks. Otherwise, the episode is free here without all that legally-objectionable copyrighted music. This program is available on Spotify. It is also available on iTunes or whatever they call it now, where you can rate, review, and subscribe. Give us money on Patreon to get exclusive bonus episodes and other cool shit.

This week the podcast is putting on our face paint, flipping our crucifixes, and worshiping the Dark Lord, although we're not certain exactly who that is in this context? We are discussing the Mercyful Fate album Don't Break the Oath, released Sept. 7, 1984. In this episode we discuss haunted houses, getting trapped in bathrooms, boring conversations with Richard Gere, are there drugs in heaven, the different types of devils, bad tattoos, witches, who created hell, Spinal Tapand so much more! Snowy Shaw is one of the most versatile and visually distinctive figures in heavy metal. A Swedish multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and visual artist, Snowy first made a name for himself in the late 1980s as the drummer for doom pioneers Memento Mori, and later King Diamond, where his theatrical approach to drumming and showmanship stood out. He would go on to play in a long list of influential bands, contributing vocals, bass, drums, and guitar with equal confidence.Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Shaw became known as a kind of musical chameleon, joining forces with a number of high-profile metal acts including Mercyful Fate, Notre Dame, Dream Evil, and Therion. His ability to adapt stylistically while leaving his own artistic stamp made him a sought-after collaborator. Shaw often brought more than just musicianship—he had a hand in stage design, costumes, and overall presentation, giving many projects a more theatrical, immersive quality.Shaw's talents weren't limited to traditional band settings. He also built a solo career, blending gothic, symphonic, and extreme metal influences into his own theatrical brand. His solo shows featured elaborate costumes, character-driven songs, and a dark sense of humor. Albums like The Liveshow – 25 Years of Madness in the Name of Metal showcased his wide-ranging influences and deep roots in everything from classic rock to extreme metal. His silence came to an end with this exclusive interview. After weeks of avoiding the topic, Snowy sat down with me to tell the full story of what happened with Eurovision, how it impacted him, and why he stayed quiet. This marks the first and only time he has opened up about the situation, offering his honest thoughts and reflections on the next stage in his career. In addition to sharing that story, Snowy talks about his journey through the highs and lows of the music industry, his creative process, and what drives him today. Whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering his work, this conversation is a deep look into one of metal's most interesting minds. Michael Poulsen of Volbeat joins The David Ellefson Show to talk about their raw new album, God of Anger's Trust, out June 6. Michael shares stories of touring tiny clubs, signing to Metal Blade, and collaborating with Mercyful Fate's Hank Shermann. From '50s rock 'n' roll to brutal riffs, he breaks down how Volbeat's sound came to life.Today's episode is brought to you by Rockabilia.com, Use code: DAVID10 for 10% Off your order. 100% authentic band merch since 1987!Join the Patreon for early access to episodes and Q and A's with the hosts www.patreon.com/tdesFor David Ellefson Stage Played Basses and Merch www.ellefsonemporium.comFollow David on Social Medialinker.ee/davidellefsonFollow Joshua on Social Medialinker.ee/talktoomeypodcast #Volbeat #Denmark #ThrashMetal #Megadeth

We pick up the story with Midnight visionary Athenar as he explains how Midnight evolved from 2003 to the present day. You will hear many parallels between the careers of Midnight and Night Demon, how Athenar grew to take Midnight more seriously year by year as their popularity expanded by leaps and bounds, and his misgivings along the way. Athenar and Jarvis break down the discography album by album, with particular emphasis on the forthcoming Steel, Rust and Disgust opus. If you care about Midnight, Night Demon, or real heavy metal, this episode is a must-listen. Enjoy. Listen at nightdemon.net/podcast or anywhere you listen to podcasts! Bob Catlin SA SlayerS.A. Slayer was one of Central Texas' most celebrated underground metal bands until its final chapter in 1984 (Jason calls them the Texas version of Mercyful Fate). With recent news of reunion gigs booked at the 2025 Hell's Heroes and Keep It True festivals, we caught up with guitarist Bob Catlin for an update and history lessons, including the infamous 1984 Slayer vs. Slayer gig, the highly collectible 1983 “Prepare to Die” EP, his foray into industrial metal with Evil Mothers and Pigface, and how former S.A. Slayer singer Steve Cooper was the coolest cat in the room.Created and Produced by Jared Tuten

“Are you comparing King Diamond to KISS!?” KING DIAMOND is the undisputed champion of all things dark & creepy that scarify & terrify throughout the metal multiverse. In our humble opinion, The King should be deemed the official ambassador of Halloween. Through the use of the creative forces granted unto him by his Scandinavian homeland (and perhaps with a little supernatural assistance for added evilocity), The KING has been unleashing terrifying tales of gothic horror backed by a progressive power metal soundtrack that have been scaring the Hell out of audiences for nearly four decades (even longer if you count his time in Mercyful Fate). There can be no doubt that he is THE premier horror metal storyteller of all time, “The KING” if you will. When in doubt, always remember The King Diamond Paradox: “King Diamond IS Mercyful Fate AND Mercyful Fate IS King Diamond!!!” Get ready for a bit of trivia regarding the music video for “The Family Ghost” and find out which former heavy metal haunt in Atlanta was legitimately (actually) haunted. Understand that it's always better to go with “a super smart 6 than an ultra dumb 9” because without adequate brainpower, there's “no bone movies” (especially if she insists on “using her teeth every time”). Discover “the worst part about being married”, pay tribute to the “chili dog queen” and JOIN US for a trip through the gruesome tales of twisted horror from the mind of Hvidovre, Denmark's metal master of the macabre, KING DIAMOND. Warning, Parental Advisory, Slackers!Back in 1985, a group of politically connected women banded together to create the “Parent's Music Resource Center”. Led by Tipper Gore, wife of future Vice President Al Gore, and Susan Baker, wife of then Treasury Secretary James Baker, the group sought to clamp down on what it perceived to be an increase of disturbing lyrical content in popular music. The main focus was on lyrics containing references to sex, drugs, violence, and the occult. To drive home their point, the PMRC created a list dubbed “The Filthy 15” - an eclectic list of recording artists spanning multiple genres. Somehow, artists like Prince, Cyndi Lauper, & Madonna, were grouped with bands like Mercyful Fate, Venom, and Judas Priest. The opposition to PMRC came in the form of some strange bedfellow - three very different musicians in their own right - who believed strongly in freedom of artistic expression. In what has become a legendary Senate hearing, Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, Frank Zappa, and John Denver, all hailing from vastly different backgrounds, made their case against the PMRC. We also take a look at how some of the musicians on The Filthy 15 feel decades later - has age (and parenthood), moderated their views on censorship or do they still hold to the same ideals of their younger, wilder selves?
This week we go back to 1983 to the debut album from Mercyful Fate - Melissa. One of the albums that helped influence Black Metal and Extreme metal. Staicha, Georgina and Blake discuss this album in detail and give their top 10 albums of 1983 which was a great year for many classic metal albums.
We're joined by Vixen Vocalist, Lorraine Lewis & Mercyful Fate & Fury Bassist, Becky Baldwin to celebrate Women's History Month. We talk about the evolution of women in Hard Rock & Heavy Metal over the last five decades & the trendsetters that have contributed to the emergence of females in this music genre.

Have you come across a map on social media showing the ratio of female to male metal musicians by country? Or have you seen a bar graph showing what months the most metal albums are released annually? If you have, there is a good chance that you have come across data visualizations created by Metal Stats. In this episode, the Boo Boo Butt Boys™ Judge Dredd and Wulf interview Metal Stats about his process for scraping and shaping data from Metal Archives while controlling for variables. They discuss the eternal questions regarding regionalism in metal, such as the infamous Denmark Paradox (a.k.a. in light of having produced Mercyful Fate, why did Denmark never produce black metal to the same degree that the rest of their Scandinavian brethren did?). We also explore the relationship between a country's GDP and metal produced by that country. Finally, we investigate why both creators and viewers of data visualization need to think critically about data that is being presented. We make references to many maps and graphs, mostly created by Metal Stats, throughout the episode. Check out the links below to see them for yourselves!
