Preview of Maryland Deathfest XIX, 22-26 May, 2024, in Baltimore, MD, USA. Plus: Baltimore tips from native Marylanders.
We sit down with Paul from Owl Ripper Recordings, The Owl, Morbid Beauty and numerous other projects such as Sloth Hammer. We discuss his extensive career in heavy metal and noise/drone/ambient music, his work as both a label owner and a music producer and what got him into this style of music. We talk about the Czechian music scene, him attending Obscene Extreme and Brutal Assault and the time he played at Maryland Deathfest and his local scene in Orlová. Find all links to all of Paul's projects at the link below: https://linktr.ee/theowlripper
On this episode of the Endless Metal Podcast, we** are joined by Greg Chandler, one of the founding members of the seminal extreme death doom band Esoteric. The dialogue comes at a very exciting time for the band, as Esoteric prepares to tour Australia for the first time. We also celebrate Esoteric's return to the U.S. for the first time in eleven years; they perform at the Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore May 23-26, 2024. We cover topics such as Ben's belief in long form extreme death doom music as classical music, the emotional language of Esoteric through exploring lyrics and listening to select tracks from the band's most recent album A Pyrric Existence (“Sick and Tired”) as well as The Maniacal Veil (“Silence”)—a monumental record celebrating its 15th anniversary—and Greg's recent guest appearance on Ahab's latest record The Coral Tombs (“The Maelstrom”) (among other topics). We are grateful to Greg for joining us from the UK after a very long day working in his studio and only one week out from the band's Maniacal Pyrronism Tour of Australia. **Unfortunately, due to rolling blackouts and ensuing confusion, Jeff was not able to join Ben for this interview.
This week on Toilet Radio: We discuss Maynard James Keenan's upcoming Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar at a suburban strip mall dojo. For just $200 you can get a free t-shirt! / Pantera got CANCELLED for good reason. We talk about Phil getting the boot from Germany and Austria and their upcoming tour with Lamb of God. / Phil Labonte got some national attention for being a thirsty old loser on Tinder. / Escape the Fate hired an unnamed artist that completely stole that shit whole hog from Cameron Gray's artwork for Dead Letter Circus. / Jon Schaffer is continuing to be a good little gubmint snitch./ Slay Squad from everyone's favorite YouTube reality competition, No Cover, is going on a real tour with real bands. / Finally, we look at the first set of bands announced for the next now-uncanceled Maryland Deathfest. In this episode we talk with Erik from Black Temple. I met Erik at the Maryland Deathfest and it turns out we have friends in common (the Centenary crew for one). Erik mentioned his band Black Temple and after listening to their monstrous music laden with blackened death, I figured it would be fun to talk about the band and the music. We chatted about how Black Temple went from a recording project to a live gigging band. Their current release called Altar of Rotting Flesh is out now and they have a new album in the works called Aura of Fire. As usual we hit the favorites such as first albums, first concerts, and the infamous and controversial subject; pizza toppings. Go get a beverage and get comfy as we talk with Black Temple. We are featuring our friends over at Satanik Royalty Records again, this time with their first non-Seattle-located and freshly signed band, Ugly. Bassist and vocalist Brandon Hay phones in from the dubiously pronounced Prescott, AZ (is it Press-Kit or Press-Scott?) to talk about his epic run of exploring punk, crust, and grind in his early days and ultimately crossing paths with the NW hesher legend Freiburger. Brandon elaborates on the trial-and-error origins of forming a small town band (involving a transient member of Graf Orlock) and how Ugly has evolved since its inception, as well as how it all comes back to GWAR once again, winding up in a band with one of his all-time influences, unexpected Jack Johnson jams, reverse engineer songwriting, whether he's a Luddite or not, if they feel obligated to like every band from their home state, and aspirations to be the heaviest band in the Tri-Walmart Area. Stick around for some bonus Maryland Deathfest chatter at the end too. Support Ugly, who has a new album coming out in 2023. Track featured is "Grateful" off Ugly's split with Life's Torment Thanks to Freiburger and Satanik Royalty Records for helping to set this interview up! NOTE: This episode has a lot of garbled echo on my end, so apologies for the unfortunate listening experience!
Matt, James and Brendan sit down for what is technically the CDM mid year report, which is as usual a few months late. They run through their top 10 (plus some) albums of the year so far and give a full rundown of Maryland Deathfest. They also discuss May's mental health charity sampler, our new radio show Knuckledraggerzzz Extravaganza, our first and second run of merch, and more.

Extreme B.O. Short biker dudes picking fights. Italian horror film composers. Circle pit cunnilingus. Cat puke. These were just some of the things Dylan experienced while attending what will probably be the last Maryland Deathfest. At least for a while. Diary of Doom briefly rears its ugly head from its respite as Dylan recounts his journey into darkness and grime to Nathan from I Hope You Suffer, who also attended MDF in years past. Trigger Warning: We do discuss suicide in this episode per the tragic event that occurred at the festival. If you would like to further support the family during this time, you can do so at their GoFundMe. Track featured at the top of the episode is "Inner Paths (to Outer Space)" by Blood Incantation off their album Hidden History of the Human Race and the track featured at the close is "Mystery's Apotheosis/City of the Living Dead Theme" by Fabio Frizzi as performed by Frizzi 2 Fulci. Music featured throughout includes Yautja, Primitive Man, Frizzi 2 Fulci, Atheist, Suffocation, Obituary, Enforced, Cerebral Rot, November's Doom, Cancer, Coroner, Autopsy, Triptykon, Blood Incantation, and Triumph of Death.
THIS WEEK ON TOILET RADIO: We got a lovely email from a listener asking, "So what exactly do I do with the information that Matt Pike is big time into antisemitic conspiracy theories?" We're also talking about what was the final Maryland Deathfest(?) including: Will Rahmer's Big Weekend Out, people doing gross shit, barricades burst, beer shortages, and a death in the middle of a festival. Can't say I blame the organizers for calling it quits. Exhorder has a new guitarist: Pat O'Brien, formerly of Cannibal Corpse. Weird! Akhlys got mad about not being included in the festivities and had to look up some synonyms about it. Finally, Prosthetic Records is now sponsoring our favorite soccer team: The Glossop North End Football Club. Everyone knows we've been lifelong fans of this club so it's a nice surprise. Tombs are on the eve of releasing their fifth full length Under Sullen Skies which is much like biting the head off a rocket and reveling in the burn of the explosion. No surprise really, the band have been incendiary since their debut Winter Hours and just get better and better with each release. This album however finds them better and more vicious than ever. It's not a stretch at all that they've already been placed high on one specific best of 2020 list and we are certain they'll be on many more to come.Just ahead of the album's release, mainman Mike Hill took the time to chat with Buke about Under Sullen Skies and how Savage Gold was somewhat an impetus for it. They also spend some time talking about Mike's deep love of the extreme side of music and how it's shaped him over the years as well as some of Mike's early favorites and how Venom, Celtic Frost, and Norwegian Black Metal shaped Tombs' sound. Mike also reveals the album that made him pick up a guitar and how Tombs got its start as a band that he would love to hear as a fan. The two chat about the experience of working with Season of Mist and some old Relapse tie ins as well as the Anthrax Club and the Maryland Deathfest experience. All that and an extended discussion on mixed martial arts and combat sports in general. Under Sullen Skies will be available November 20 on Season of Mist. To keep up with all things Tombs, visit their official website, Facebook page, Instagram page, and their YouTube channel. 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

After months of anticipation, and program coverage right here on RAM, The Seance Metalfest is in the books. An amazing weekend was had by all. Great music and even better people added up to a shit ton of memories that will be forever embedded in our hearts and minds. But RAM's activity doesn't end once the sleep is caught up on and the hangovers are nursed. Welcome to the inaugural Seance Metalfest Post Game Show. Much like after our Coreen lived it up at the Maryland Deathfest, it's time to reflect and share some personal highlights of the Fest. First up, we had an entertaining chat with Canadian grinders Flash Out. With so much going on their camp it was an opportune time to reacquaint our listeners with them. As well we got into the faces of some of the party goers to share with us their thoughts on the shindig. Easily one of our most entertaining segments ever! Musically, we crank the SMF headliners Outre Tomb and Sunless. Plus some cool tunage from Wilt and Endless Chaos. Horns!! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. Here is the 88th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Richard Hoak of Total Fucking Destruction, Brutal Truth, and Peacemaker. Richard Hoak should be no stranger to readers of this blog - as drummer for both Total Fucking Destruction and Brutal Truth, he's been a major part of the history of grindcore, as well as my own history with the genre. Richard was kind enough to hook me up with a copy of TFD's latest album, #USA4TFD, and we made plans to do this interview when his schedule opened up. We discussed TFD's set at this year's Maryland Deathfest, the writing and recording of #USA4TFD, the surprisingly wide appeal of grindcore, and the philosophical underpinnings of TFD's lyrics. Richard also filled me in on the creation of Brutal Truth's Need To Control - an album that is 25 years old this year, and which served as my introduction to Brutal Truth (and is still one of my favourite grindcore albums of all time). My thanks to Richard for speaking to me, and to you for listening. TRACKLIST: Total Fucking Destruction: "6.5 Billion (Pieces of Shit)" "Kill The Jocks and Eat Their Brains" "Necro-Anarchist " taken from the album Compact Disc Version 1.0 "#USA4TFD" "A Note To My Future Self" "Anal Trump Is Gay" taken from the album #USA4TFD "Monsters" taken from the EP Monsters "I Did Something Bad" "Bugs" "Hater" taken from the EP Our Love Is A Rainbow "Hate Mongering Pig Pandemonium" "Human is the Bastard" taken from the album Hater Brutal Truth: "Godplayer" taken from the album Need to Control
With seemingly every band either travelling to and/or playing the Maryland Deathfest we found ourselves without a "Creature Feature" this week. No pro-blem-o. This week we kick up our feet, broke out the beer and Lemmys, and just let loose. Everyone has played the "If I Won The Lottery" game. If money were no object, what would you do. We had our drunken version of this game geared toward Heavy Metal. Where would we go. What we do. How would we contribute further to the Metal World. Crack open one of your faves and give this a listen. In our "News, Views, and Tunes",we pay tribute to artists that created some key Metallic art. We crank some new tunes from Hate, Martydod, Jesus Piece, some classic Sodom and SNFU, and introduce Wykan in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns!! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. Here is the 57th instalment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Rasyid Juraimi of Singaporean stoner rockers Marijannah. I caught up with Rasyid when Marijannah played Rumah Api, on the same night that I interviewed Australian psychedelic metal band Potion (with whom Marijannah were touring). Though I've seen him play a number of times, and have actually interviewed his Wormrot bandmate Arif twice, this interview was the first time I've spoken with Rasyid. We talked about Marijannah's origins, the difference between writing for stoner rock and grindcore, as well as the setbacks the band faced in getting their debut album Til Marijannah released. Though the focus of the interview was on Marijannah, I couldn't help but ask about Wormrot's show at this year's Maryland Deathfest - thus concluding a triptych started back in January on the Wormrot podcast and continued in April on the Code Error episode. It turns out this story had a happy, drunken, trashcan-throwing ending. My thanks again to Rasyid for talking to me, and to you for listening. In Episode 76 we are joined by Dan Lilker, Erik Burke and Scott D’Agostino of grindcore band Blurring. Calamity ensues and someone even gets bitten by a dog. Then we get into all the usual segments: news, new releases, what we’ve been listening to, and our Top 5 Slayer Songs We Want to Hear on the Farewell Tour. Matt takes on Metallica in Skullcrushers.

Here is the 29th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with illustrator and podcaster Mark Rudolph. Mark is half the team behind the Requiem Metal Podcast, which he does with his friend Jason Hundey. I've been a fan of their podcast for years, and it's no secret that Requiem provided the blueprint for this one. In addition to that, Mark provides art for Decibel Magazine, and has put out a few metal themed graphic novels inspired by the music of Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost. We did the interview in the "VIP Area" behind the merch booths at Maryland Deathfest 2015, while a reunited Solstice threatened to drown us out from a nearby stage. We talked about Mark's beginnings in the zine world, the genesis of the Requiem podcast, and some of his recent illustration work. Since the interview was conducted last summer, one of the big questions was, "Will there by more Requiem?" Of course, in the intervening months Mark and Jason resurrected the podcast, and have released a slew of new shows. I wish I could have released this episode while that news was still fresh and exclusive, but time got away from me. What can I say - I take after my heroes. My thanks again to Mark for taking the time to talk to me, and to you for listening. TRACKLIST: Eucharist - Wounded and Alone Entombed - Forsaken Dismember - And So is Life Ceremonial Oath - The Shadowed End Dark Tranquillity - My Faeryland Forgotten Unanimated - At Dawn Dawn - Ride The Wings of Pestilence
Chris and guest host Billy discuss the brutality of Maryland Deathfest 2015. Billy had an all-venues pass, so he ended up seeing many more bands than Chris did. Hanging out with Chris Dick and the gang made another Memorial Day weekend even more memorable! We were sad that Spence couldn’t join us, but next year […]
Dino Cazares took a break from consuming young children to be our guest on the podcast one week ahead of the release of Fear Factory's new album Genexus. While Godless goes a little gaga, we talked about the storied history of the band, the troubles with labels and producers and their struggles with the limelight and keeping band members happy. We also find out the fate of Divine Heresy and some of Dino's other projects. We take another listener call about festivals, since that topic seems to be on the top of everyone's mind as they watch the downfall of the Mayhem Festival. We discuss whether any changes need to be made to some static festivals such as Maryland Deathfest, and whether changing the formula would give the appearance that they're "selling out." Songs:Fear Factory – "Dielectric"Amorphis – "Death of a King"
Here is the 26th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring a conversation with my friends Scott Colvin and "Metal Mike" Dabaie as we made our way to Maryland Deathfest. On the second day of Maryland Deathfest XIII, I recorded a conversation with my friends Scott and Mike as we drove down from Scott's home in Annapolis, Maryland (where Scott was kind enough to let us spend the night). We discussed the metal culture, the perception that metalheads are prone to violence, and what we were looking forward to most that day. My thanks again to Scott and Mike for speaking with me, and to you for listening. TRACKLIST: Tryptikon - A Thousand Lies Arcturus - Angst Bulldozer - Don't Trust The 'Saint' Morpheus Descends - The Horror of The Truth Vulcano - Death Metal
Here's the 25th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring a conversation from my ride down to Maryland Deathfest with Josh Landes (Limbs Bin/Infinite Distortion Radio), Jesse Bagels (Spite/Stygian Black Hand Records) and Henry Yuan (Electric Assault Records). I ran into Josh at ABC No Rio when Full of Hell and The Body played the week-end prior; he offered me a ride down to MDF, which I eagerly jumped at because AMTRAK and Chinatown buses suck. During the course of the ride we discussed who we were most excited to see at MDF, our previous experiences at the fest, and recent events in Baltimore, among other things. It was the best time I've ever had getting down there. My thanks again to Josh, Henry and Jesse for the ride, the conversation, and the good company. TRACKLIST: Bloodbath - Total Death Exhumed Lycanthrophy - Rancour Napalm Death - One Eyed Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Hungry Homeless Handjob Aura Noir - The One Who Smite Master - As Two Worlds Collide Suffocation - Depths of Depravity Obituary - The End Complete
2015 Maryland Deathfest: In this special edition of the Metal Heads podcast George and Buke take the show on the road to Baltimore, Maryland for the 2015 Maryland Deathfest. "Metal Rain" intro used by permission of Men Without Armies.
For this episode, your intrepid metalhead Chris made his way down to Baltimore for MDF XII, and while mourning Spence’s absence, he drank in the synergistic vibe of the diverse crowd and hung out with Chris Dick of Decibel and Billy Gamble of Dig. The weather was amazing: sunny but cool for the leather-clad folks […]

We're back on track. This episode we discuss cutting our own hair, Maryland DeathFest, sleeping during the day, electricity, the smell of buildings burning, too much self love on social media and our visit to AwesomeTalk! Tv.
This year, both of us attended Maryland Deathfest to witness the metal event of the year. Not only did we join Chris Dick of Decibel for band sets, Bergers cookies, and late-night chili dogs, but we also met Mark Rudolph of Requiem Metal Podcast to talk shop about podcasting. The weather in Baltimore was unseasonably […]
