Jeremy Alder! Comedian! Ex-preacher! Almost A Grown Man! Friend! Delight! More! We have a great chat! You have a great listen! About Jeremy Alder: Homeschooled in the heart of Texas by fundamentalist missionary parents with a penchant for conspiracy theories, Jeremy's childhood was anything but conventional. Now married with children of his own, Jeremy's material delves into the trials and tribulations of growing up homeschooled, the complications of religion, the mysteries of marriage, the chaos of parenting, and the existential crisis of aging—all with a healthy dose of skepticism and silliness, dry wit and charm. Jeremy headlines comedy clubs and bars around the country and has opened for several nationally touring acts, including Demetri Martin, Russell Howard, Tom Papa, Aparna Nancherla, Nicole Byer, and Chad Daniels. He has been a featured performer at numerous comedy festivals, including Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, Big Sky Comedy Festival (Best of Fest), Asheville Comedy Festival, and Cleveland Comedy Festival (Best of Fest). Jeremy's Dry Bar Comedy special, “Purity Pants”, has generated over 6 million across platforms. About his album "Almost A Grown Man": Jeremy Alder's debut comedy album Almost A Grown Man is out courtesy of Blonde Medicine. A ‘güero' born, raised and homeschooled in South Texas, Jeremy was steeped in a world of alternative facts and fervent beliefs and learned early on to find humor in life's absurdities. Alder started comedy 10 years ago and now he's got an autobiographical hour of jokes and stories about growing up weirdly religious and homeschooled in Texas, young marriage, remarriage, and fatherhood. Also, plenty of God, sex, drugs, and guns to keep it interesting.  The album was recorded in the historic small town of Hillsborough, North Carolina, where Jeremy lives. Said Alder, “I recorded the album at a bar around the corner from my house. There were a lot of locals there, including the mayor, as well as my wife and kids. It felt like a community event!” Jeremy went to seminary after college, where he developed a humorous and provocative preaching style that sometimes got him in trouble. When a personal crisis led him to stop preaching and going to church, he turned to standup. The comedy community quickly became his new spiritual home, which he will be the first to tell you, is not a good thing. Jeremy met label heads Dominic Del Bene and Jessica Mozes by coincidence outside a show and found another supportive community in Blonde Medicine. Almost a Grown Man will is available wherever comedy is heard. Thanks for listening! And this is only the first HALF of our conversation. Ryan Francis performs under the name "Huge Huge" (@hugeeugeofficial), was in cult-favorite indie horror movie ThanksKilling, and is (dubbed by me) a real good liver of life!  Ryan's back on the show this week for a proper catch up and my goodness does it not dissapoint.  If you're a longtime listener of this show, you'll know that one, Ryan is a past guest of the show with his first appearance being back on episode 41 and that in itself is worth going back and listening to if you haven't. It's one of my favorite conversations. So, I say, if you're an avid listener, there's a chance you'll know how much I appreciate the conversation I had with Ryan. For many reasons I could list again, mainly covering how the conversation was filled with a lot of very fun stories and reminders to just live life and let yourself experience things, and this episode, is such a great follow up to that. So while Ryan shares many new fun stories of what he's been up to with his music project Huge Euge, the crazy story of playing Riot Fest, and a lot of other fun stuff I've come to expect from him, he actually also opens up about grief and processing the loss of his mom. I'm incredibly thankful for Ryan being as open as he is in this conversation and I just can't say how much I appreciate him sharing all the highs and the deepest of lows in this one. And for all of that, it's a really great conversation that I'm very excited to share with you guys. The discussion also touches on the DIY music scene in Asheville and Charlotte, their experiences with record labels, and the significance of festivals like Fest in their career. Additionally, they share humorous anecdotes about local culture, including the infamous barbecue wars in North Carolina.Intro Music Courtesy of Overthinker: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5iQ2tyRloyNp6Yjd5sv73C?si=ib3bYCwHSYSYW16iiwPHHQPower chords and crashing boards. Tom and Mikey are lifelong friends that grew up on Long Island during the glory days of alternative music where our local bands were As Tall As Lions, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Sleeping, Envy on the Coast, you get the point. We spent many nights together at The Downtown, catching any pop-punk, indie, hardcore, or emo band that came through. This was not a phase, Mom! Fast forward 20 years and we are still just as passionate about the scene as we were during our girl jeans and youth XL band tees days. Tom and Mikey are diehard New York Islanders fans, but Justin (Bolts fan) likes to remind us that we are #notanislespodcast. As we got older we realized we can like more than one thing and running beside our love for music has always been our love for hockey. On October 31, 1969, Patricia Spencer (16) and Pamela Hobley (15) vanished from Oscoda, Michigan. Both skipped school and were last seen walking along River Road, possibly heading to a homecoming game or Halloween party. Patricia was vibrant and family-oriented; Pamela was rebellious, recently engaged, and rumored to use drugs. Initially considered runaways, police later concluded they were likely abducted while hitchhiking and murdered. A motorist's report of giving them a ride and a 1985 tip about their murder near a barn were ignored until 2010, when Chief Mark David reopened the case. Searches yielded no evidence, and a 2013 person of interest led nowhere. Theories link the case to serial killer Rodney Alcala (due to a photo resembling Pamela) and the Oakland County Child Killer, but neither fully fits. The case remains unsolved, with no bodies or closure.   Join The Dark Oak Discussion: Patreon The Dark Oak Podcast Website Facebook Instagram Twitter TikTok Youtube This episode of The Dark Oak was created, researched, written, recorded, hosted, edited, published, and marketed by Cynthia and Stefanie of Just Us Gals Productions with artwork by Justyse Himes and Music by Ryan Creep
