I really hate the expression "there's so much to unpack" but regarding Celtic Frost's open solicitation for auditioning drummers, THERE'S SO MUCH TO UNPACK. "MUST BE WILLING TO LIVE IN SWITZERLAND". "MUST BE WILLING TO TURN A BLIND EYE TO ASSAULTING SOMEONE IN A MOTLEY CRUE TEE". "WE HAVE A STRONG IMAGE" (yeah, we've seen the back cover to 'Cold Lake'). We can spend all day getting bogged down in whether or not there's a contradiction between coveting a drummer who is "wild" but also expecting one who is "precise". And that's exactly what I am going to do, I am going to get TOTALLY FUCKING BOGGED DOWN in whether or not there's a contradiction. This examination will take place during the program's third hour.
What happens when a band ditches thrash just as it goes mainstream… and dives headfirst into French poetry, industrial noise, and orchestral arrangements? You get Into the Pandemonium by Celtic Frost, a boundary-shattering 1987 album that still divides, bewilders, and inspires. In this episode, we dig deep into this genre-defying masterpiece that blurred the lines between black metal, gothic atmospheres, and avant-garde experimentation. Was it ahead of its time or just too weird to work? Either way, it's unforgettable. We explore the album's fascinating backstory—from label resistance and chart failure to its underground cult status and lasting influence on extreme music. Along the way, we unpack everything from Baudelaire lyrics and Bosch album art to dive-bomb guitar solos and operatic vocals. If you're into the darker corners of 80s metal or love when bands break all the rules, this one's for you.If you're a fan of Ministry, Bauhaus, Slayer, or the experimental side of Metallica, hit play.

Meet Captain Content & Kevin in the pit again this week for a tooth-losing, hella good time! We're getting our aggressions out by revisiting the starting point of it all for Kevin. The thrash, crossover, speed metal movement of the 80s spawned his love of all things rock n' punk n' metal. Once again, we will not be covering the Big 4 of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax, but if you love them, then you will love this bunch. What is it that we do here at InObscuria? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we explore all things mosh-worthy! This is real meta,l people. Zijn ze eventueel bereid om hun liefde voor New York hardcore om te ruilen voor hunkering naar Germaanse power metal? https://virusukthrash.bandcamp.com Welcome to this week's episode where we dive deep into the world of punk, thrash, and heavy metal! Today, we're spotlighting Virus, one of the true pioneers of the U.K. thrash metal scene of the 1980s. Known for their old-school thrash—played raw, fast, and unapologetic—Virus set the standard for how thrash should be done.Formed in 1986 by Keith "Henry Heston" Hazelden and Terry "Tez" Kaylor of Criminal Damage, Virus quickly made a name for themselves with their DIY ethos and blistering sound. Early member John D. Hess joined during their first year, with Coke Finlay completing the lineup in 1987. Their self-funded debut Pray for War paved the way, but it was their second album, Force Recon, that cemented their place in the thrash pantheon.Virus shared stages with legends like Megadeth, Celtic Frost, and Napalm Death, becoming known as the “bad boys of thrash metal” thanks to their wild, chaotic gigs. The band split in 1990 but reformed in 2009 under Coke Finlay's leadership, releasing two EPs and a string of ferocious live performances.2020 marked their triumphant return with Evilution Apocalypse, their first full-length album in 30 years. The lead single, mixed by the legendary Randy Burns, captures the spirit of old-school thrash while pushing their sound into new territory.Today, Virus continues to shred lead by Coke Finlay on vocals and lead guitar. This is a band that's stayed true to its roots while evolving to keep the thrash flame burning bright.Get ready for a journey through their storied career, from the mosh pits of the 80s to the stage-shaking anthems of today. This is Virus: thrash, the way it should be played.

New Skeletal Faces, the genre-defying band led by Errol Fritz (vocals/guitar) and Don Void (drums), has once again pushed musical boundaries with their latest release, Until the Night. Following their debut, Celestial Disease, Until the Night showcases a bold evolution in their sound, blending elements of punk, gothic rock, metal, and more. In an insightful interview, Fritz and Void shared their thoughts on the album's creative process, signing with Peaceville Records, and what sets New Skeletal Faces apart from today's music scene. The band quickly points out how Until the Night differs from its predecessor. While Celestial Disease laid the foundation for New Skeletal Faces' identity Until the Night expands the band's sonic palette. "The songs are a lot more catchy on this album," Fritz explained. "It's just fucking catchy here to me." The album delves into a wider range of styles, from the aggressive, headbang-worthy Pagan War (arguably their heaviest track yet) to the darker, death-rock vibe of Enchantment of My Inner Coldness.Void also appreciates the new album's diversity: "There's stuff on Until the Night that's more punk, and stuff that's heavier than anything on Celestial Disease. It branches and pushes in every direction."Until the Night marks New Skeletal Faces' debut release on the legendary Peaceville Records. For the band, signing with the iconic label felt like a major milestone. "This is the first time I've ever been on a label of this size, so it's a big deal," Fritz said. Void added, "When we found out that they were interested, it was the easiest yes to ever say." The band had long admired Peaceville's roster, which includes genre-defining acts like Anathema, Paradise Lost, and Opeth. The support from Peaceville has been invaluable, allowing the band to stay true to their vision. "They immediately understood what we were about," Void said, noting how the label supported the band's unique artistic choices, including the gold foil album cover and custom vinyl variants.Speaking of the album cover, Until the Night features artwork by none other than Errol Fritz himself. Fritz, who also created the cover for the band's Sextinction EP, took a minimalist yet striking approach to the design. "Sometimes simplicity is better," he explained. "There's not a whole lot going on, but it says a lot." The artwork, which captures raw emotion, was a perfect complement to the album's diverse and atmospheric sound. "The minute you showed us those sick paintings of yours, we just knew they were the ones," Void said, praising Fritz's talent. The band also discussed making the music video for Ossuary Lust, filmed in a chapel in a cemetery just five minutes from Fritz's home. "We broke into this little chapel and just started filming," Fritz recalled. Despite the somewhat illicit nature of the shoot, the band had no issues with the church authorities. "Nobody stopped us. No priests walked in and tried to throw holy water on us," Fritz joked. The video, filled with striking imagery and a sense of rebellion, mirrors the band's aesthetic and attitude—uncompromising and raw.Another highlight for the band was working with legendary producer Bill Metoyer (Slayer, W.A.S.P., and the godfather of Los Angeles heavy metal). "Bill is a legend," Void said. "His resume speaks for itself." The band recorded Until the Night themselves before bringing the material to Metoyer for the final production. "It was incredible," Fritz noted, explaining how Mitoia understood the band's vision and helped bring it to life. Fritz and Void formed a personal bond with Metoyer outside the studio, enjoying nights of casual drinks and conversation. "He's just a lot of fun," Void said. "We hit it off with him immediately."When asked what sets New Skeletal Faces apart from today's musical landscape, the band had a simple answer: nearly everything. "We're too heavy for goth, and then we're too goth for metal," Fritz said. "We're not political enough for punk. We don't really fit into current trends." This genre-defying approach has earned the band a loyal following, with fans drawn to their unique sound that blends elements from multiple genres without being confined to any single one. When it comes to musical influences, New Skeletal Faces draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of artists, including Celtic Frost, The Cure, David Bowie, P.I.L., and Killing Joke. These bands, known for their boundary-pushing styles, have significantly shaped New Skeletal Faces' sound. "Looking ahead, the band is eager to continue experimenting and expanding their sound, creating music that is as unpredictable and exciting as their live shows. As Void said, "We just want to keep making music that stands out and pushes boundaries."With Until the Night, New Skeletal Faces has delivered an album that is as ambitious as it is bold—marking the beginning of a new era for the band. As they continue to challenge expectations, one thing is clear: New Skeletal Faces is a force to be reckoned with in the world of heavy music.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
We're back, and this time we've gone back 4 whole decades to talk about our favourite songs from 1984, including lots of jazzy indiepop, metal (from extreme to hair), german pop, and the mystery of whether Lionel Richie or Prince's girlfriend keep phoning Rockwell. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) -The Blue Nile, Billy Bragg, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Celtic Frost, Cocteau Twins, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, Julian Cope, Dio, Echo & The Bunnymen, Everything But The Girl, Husker Du, Iron Maiden, Killing Joke, Kenny Loggins, Manowar, Metallica, Nena, Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder, Prefab Sprout, Prince, The Psychedelic Furs, Ratt, Lionel Richie, Rockwell, Sandie Shaw, The Smiths, Swansway, Thompson Twins, Ultravox, and Van Halen!Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7JDSRATZtdBU5yJtD4zbFM?si=256411ee4df7417aFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Remember the late '80s when thrash metal was roaring through the underground, just waiting to explode? Those were the days when Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax were solidifying their places as the big four of thrash. But amidst these giants, bands like Paradox were carving their unique paths with blistering riffs and complex compositions that sometimes flew under the radar. If you're the type of metalhead who loves to dig through the crates at your local record store, hoping to stumble upon something you might have missed, then Paradox's 1989 release “Heresy” is the treasure you've been looking for.Paradox formed in Würzburg, Germany, in 1986, led by the dynamic duo of Charlie Steinhauer and Alex Blaha. Initially part of a cover band paying homage to acts like Overkill and Venom, they quickly transitioned to creating their original sound. By 1987, they had inked a deal with Roadrunner Records, a label synonymous with underground metal. Their debut, “Product of Imagination,” set the stage, but it was their sophomore effort, “Heresy,” that really made waves in the metal community.Imagine discovering an album purely by accident on a metal blog, where a quick 30-second sample convinces you that you've struck gold. That's precisely what happened when Tim stumbled upon “Heresy.” This album is a masterclass in thrash, delivering the speed, technical prowess, and raw energy defining the genre while infusing progressive elements that set it apart. From the opening acoustic strains that segue into ferocious thrash anthems, “Heresy” grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. Tracks like “Kill Time” showcase the band's insane technical skills, with 30-second note melodies played at breakneck speeds. It's not just about speed and aggression; Paradox brings a level of musicianship and melody often lost in thrash's chaos.A standout track, “Search for Perfection,” features harmonized leads that are as captivating as they are complex. These guys aren't just about playing fast; they're about playing smart, weaving intricate guitar lines that demand repeat listens to appreciate fully. The tracks “Heresy” and “700 Years On” blend the historical narrative with relentless riffs, creating a listening experience that's both intellectually and sonically stimulating. What makes “Heresy” particularly fascinating is its concept. The album delves into the Albigensian Crusade of the 13th century, a campaign initiated by Pope Innocent III to eradicate Catharism in southern France. This historical depth adds a layer of intrigue, making the lyrics worth diving into despite their rapid-fire delivery. The production, handled by Harris Johns (known for his work with Celtic Frost, Kreator, and Sodom), ensures that every note and beat hits with precision and power. No wonder this album still sounds fresh today, able to stand toe-to-toe with modern thrash releases. The band's journey didn't end with “Heresy.” After a hiatus, they returned in 2000 with “Collision Course” and have since released several albums, including “Heresy II: End of a Legend” in 2021. While line-up changes have been frequent, Charlie Steinhauer remains the driving force, keeping the spirit of Paradox alive and thrashing. So next time you're flipping through vinyl, keep an eye out for “Heresy.” Whether a $32 import or a hidden gem in the bargain bin, it's a worthy addition to any thrash aficionado's collection. And if you're still on the fence, take a listen on your preferred streaming platform. This is thrash metal at its finest, and it might just become your new favorite discovery.Songs In This EpisodeIntro - Heresy 15:29 - Killtime 16:55 - Search for Perfection 21:01 - Castle in the Wind 24:47 - Massacre of the Cathars 27:26 - 700 Years On Outro - Crusaders RevengeMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. While we may think of the German band the Scorpions as an 80's metal band, they started much earlier - way back in 1965. Things didn't really come together for the group until the 1978-1992 personnel lineup of Klaus Meine on lead vocals, Rudolph Schenker on rhythm guitar, Mattias Jabs on lead guitar, Francis Buchholz on bass, and Herman Rarebell on percussion. By the time that the live album entitled World Wide Live came out in 1985, the group had established itself as an international commercial success.Recorded during their 1984 world tour, "World Wide Live" showcases the band at their best, and is a testament to their skill as live performers. The album was produced by Dieter Dierks, and was initially released as a 2-LP vinyl set, a cassette, and a VHS of tour footage showing off the band's stage presence. Folks, you got your money's worth when you originally purchased this album! From the high intensity of rockers like "Big City Nights" and "Rock You Like a Hurricane," to the raw emotion of ballads like "Still Loving You," the Scorpions deliver a performance that connects with their audience. Hearing the live versions gives you a sense of the band in a way that is hard to capture from the studio arrangements.Lynch leads this journey back to 1985, when the Scorpions were rocking the world like a...well...they were rocking the world. Big City NightsThis song from "Love at First Sting" leads off side two of the first LP. Schenker and Meine composed this one, as they did with many Scorpions songs. This homage to night life in the city was released as the third single from their studio album, but failed to chart. No One Like YouOriginally appearing on their 1982 album, "Blackout," this track deals with infatuation and desire. Despite its only reaching number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100, it is one of the songs that established the Scorpions as premiere hard rockers of the 80's.Still Loving YouLong before the hair metal ballad became a trope, the Scorpions demonstrated their ability to handle a slower song while still maintaining intensity and raw emotion. The lyrics are of a guy struggling to convince the girl he has lost to give their love a second chance.Rock You Like a HurricaneThe Scorpions' signature song first appeared on "Love at First Sting" the year before this live album was released. It reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, a rare Scorpions song to break the top 40. The track leads off side three of the album. The risqué video would be a prime exhibit of the PMRC in their quest for more parental control over child access to music videos. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Crazy by Patsy ClineA film called "Sweet Dreams" chronicles the life of country music star Patsy Cline, and was in American theaters in this month. STAFF PICKS:Whole of the Moon by The WaterboysWayne gets the staff picks started this week with the best-selling song from an overlooked British-Irish rock-folk band. Cerebral and artsy, with lyrics like "I saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon," the song is about individuals with rare depth. The Waterboys reformed in 2000, and can still be seen touring, primarily in Europe.Lay Your Hands On Me by The Thompson TwinsRob brings us a song from the British group that has neither members named Thompson nor twins. It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Thompson Twins member Tom Bailey has said that the song takes religious ritual as a metaphor for the connection between artist, performer, and artist. It's Only Love by Bryan Adams and Tina TurnerBruce's staff pick is the sixth and final single from Adam's amazingly popular album "Reckless," and also appears on Turner's "Tina Live in Europe" released in 1988. Loaded with melancholy and anger from a breakup, the song encourages the jilted lover to remember - it's only love. This song went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.Money for Nothing by Dire StraitsLynch features a signature song from Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, with a strong helping of Sting to boot. This Grammy Award-winning track was a staple of MTV, and spent three weeks atop the US pop charts. The lyrics are a conversation between two working-class men as they watch music videos. This week on Toilet Radio we watched 1989 Christian documentary Hell's Bells: The Dangers of Rock N' Roll. Jordan and I sat down and watched all three hours of this thing so we could bring you the choicest nugs of a film that, quite honestly, has a firmer grasp on obscure kvlt heavy metal history than your average Metal Archives dipshit. Hosted by Eric Holmberg of Reel to Reel Ministries, Hell's Bells present a 5-part warning of the battle for your teen's soul as the foul forces of Satan infect the music of Celtic Frost, King Diamond, Diamanda Galas, Current 93, and George Michael. Join us as we backmask messages, flip through the Satanic Bible, get confirmation of demonic influence from "respected law enforcement officers" and get in on a lil' Satanic panic. It's a good one. Oftentimes albums which would go on to become influential and formative works for entire genres have a certain spark to them that, in retrospect, seems obvious and apparent. You listen and can go "Oh, I understand how this became important to a lot of people." Even if the quality isn't great or the songwriting isn't as tight as it could be, that spark is there and you can feel it. This isn't one of those albums.

This conversation with Donita Sparks of L7 starts with a look back at the Alternative Nation Festival in 1995 and the band's connection with Australian audiences. We'll discuss the unique qualities of Donita's guitar tone, which echoes Tom Warrior from Celtic Frost's style with a punk twist, and delve into how this sound was honed over time. The conversation will touch on the band's distinctive groove, the process of riff-writing, and Donita's musical inspirations. We'll revisit the early reception of Nirvana's Nevermind and get Donita's perspective on The Prodigy's cover of the L7 cut, "Fuel My Fire." We clear up if Jennifer Finch ever played with Moby's band and whether Oliver Stone personally reached out for the "Natural Born Killers" soundtrack contribution. Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the notorious 'Tampongate' at the Reading Festival, we'll discuss its place in the band's history. The interview will also cover the band's advocacy efforts through Rock for Choice and whether Donita still identifies with the feminist movement, followed by her views on current issues regarding transgender individuals in sports, prisons, and beauty pageants.
Tom G Warrior discusses the new live album by his Hellhammer tribute band, Triumph of Death, and he celebrates the continued support he receives from metal fans across the world.
My brain is like Swiss cheese....is about the most insightful thing Episode 179 offers you but I try and get to grips with Joan of Arc, from a mention in a Celtic Frost lyric all the way to a whole verse in The Smiths 'Bigmouth strikes again', where the title of todays podcast came from all the way to.....well being one of the most iconic figures in modern history. Her story is one of conquering adversity, kicking the patriarchy squarely in the balls, crowing a King, lifting a siege, inspiring a divided medieval nation with her religious devotion, dressing as she god damn pleased and ultimately dying a young grim and sexy death perfect for horror film adaptation!support the show over athttp://www.patreon.com/AlanAverillsponsored byMetal Blade recordshttps://metalblade.indiemerch.com/promo code AA 2023 for 10% off your orderships worldwideyou can order the new Primordial vinylright here :https://eu.kingsroadmerch.com/metal-blade/category/4370/primordial-pre-orderfor professional band backdrops or other requests contact :alan.averill@gmail.comPrimordial on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/0BZr6...Verminous Serpenthttps://open.spotify.com/artist/54Wpl...Dread Sovereignhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/60HY4...Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/agitators-anonymous-the-alan-averill-podcast. “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” 1987. That sounds like a very long time ago, but here's a few events that will provide some perspective. 1987 marked the time of the Black Monday stock market crash, the FDA approval of Prozac, the first sighting of The Simpsons on television, WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome, and the release of Guns N' Roses debut album, Appetite For Destruction. Additionally, many of us were deep in the throes of our own budding pubescence (and/or pube-essence) in 1987. 1987 also marked a time when the popularity and intensity of thrash began to grow ever more popular, clawing its way to the top of the mountain as one of the most transformative and powerful subgenres in all of heavy metal. And in 1987, our heavy metal horizons were just beginning to blossom and expand, gradually guiding us towards heavier, faster, and darker metal music than we had ever experienced before. Discover the most perfect example of a “flan” from 1987 and listen to the sexiest backmasking you've ever heard in your life (courtesy of the “hi-fidelity ghosts” that haunt Bunkerpoon Manor). It's time to take out your “squid dentures” and get “razor tight” while learning about our “guilty pleasures”, including the reasons why $18 is (sometimes) too much and there's no such thing as “free bags” in the less fortunate parts of the planet. This episode we are joined by Sami Sati and Tanner Swenson of Oak Pantheon. We start off with an interview and much hilarity ensues. George announces your opportunity to become fashion outcasts, before moving on to the usual traditions of T-Shirt and Beer Check, News, New Release and What We Are Listening To. We reveal the final results of the last Metal Thunderdome before moving on to Matt's Thunderdome opponents: Carcass' Swansong vs Celtic Frost's Cold Lake. Sami and Tanner, clearly suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, choose to stay for the entire episode.

Tony and his significant other have a bread compulsion. We talk about the “Satanic Panic” that occurred […]

Katon W. De PenaHirax singer Katon W. De Pena was front-and-center for the birth and rise of California's legendary mid-‘80s thrash-metal scene. Today, at age 59, he's as metal as ever and joins us to discuss Hirax, his former band Phantasm (featuring original Metallica bassist Ron McGovney), his connection to Celtic Frost frontman Tom G. Warrior, and the times a young Hirax fan named Mike Patton used to show up early to meet the band (and later returned the favor).Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
What. A. Show! The new Nickelback album drops on Friday, the 18th. It's called Get Rolling. We talk about the album and a few certain songs. Chad tells me about Tommy Lee's 60th birthday party, a very funny story from when they recorded their first album, and a Stanley Cup prediction. He also talks about Pantera, the hysterical Funny or Die video they shot a decade ago, and more. Bryan Kuznitz from Fame On Fire is up next. Their new album is called Welcome to the Chaos...and that's what it's about. It's their Pandemic record. He talks about the upcoming tour, a cruise they'll be playing on, a Nickelback cover they did, and that's just for starters. I talked with metal legend, Tom G. Warrior earlier this week. What a fun talk. The new Celtic Frost boxset drops on the 25th, and it's massive. We talk about his career, influences and LOTS more. -Meltdown-
