This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

Though they were one of the first so-called “grunge” bands to sign to a major label, Alice in Chains were something of an outlier in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s Seattle scene. They didn't fall directly into the punk camp, or the hair metal camp, and even the true metalheads thought they weren't hardcore enough. This became painfully evident when the band opened a tour for Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, and were hazed, spat on, and booed. Alice's lead singer, Layne Staley, could take the criticism. He had a prankster's spirit, not to mention a rock ‘n roll attitude that paired well with his killer rock ‘n roll voice. But newfound fame was overwhelming, as was the destructive addiction to heroin Layne developed to deal with it all. Soon Layne Staley found himself lost in a jungle of his own making, not unlike the jungle that he sang so convincingly about in one of Alice in Chains' most endearing songs. This week we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. Captain Content reminds us that a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. We hope that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Neurotic Outsiders – “Nasty Ho” from Neurotic Outsiders (1996)Thrasher – “Bad Boys” from Thrasher (1985)Heavy Bones – “4:AM T-M” from Heavy Bones (1991)Ultra Bomb – “Time To Burn” from Time To Burn (2022)Saints Of The Underground - “Tomorrow Never Comes” from Love The Sin, Hate The Sinner (2008)Mad Season – “Lifeless Dead” from Above (1995)Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” from Division One (1985)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Patrick returns to Musical Chairs as the guys cover two more epic bands from the pages of rock's history book. For several weeks now, Patrick has made it known that he planned on covering Alice In Chains for his next band, and that would come to pass with this Episode. Formed in the late 80s, Alice In Chains rose to rock prominence in the early 90's with some of the most iconic songs from that entire era. Despite losing one of the most recognizable frontmen of that time frame (Layne Staley), the band has forged on and is still making great music to this day. Dave, on the other hand, covers Rainbow. After leaving Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore created Rainbow, and despite an ever-changing lineup of singers and band members, Rainbow certainly left its mark and became a staple of the early days of MTV. It's another great installment of Musical Charis that you won't want to miss.Today's hosts: Dave Ungar (@AttitudeAgg) and Patrick O' Dowd (@WrestlngRealist)Episode 5 of Season 4 of Musical Chairs focuses on Alice In Chains & RainbowAbout Chairshot RadioThe rebirth of Chairshot Radio will see a rotating cast of hosts delivering you a new show EVERY day. Text us, and Rock on!Ever wondered how a band's darkest themes could captivate millions and change rock music forever? Alice in Chains' "Dirt" did just that, and in this episode, we peel back the layers of this iconic album. We'll take you through the band's gritty origins, highlighting the magnetic synergy between Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley. Relive the early days of the Seattle music scene and get a glimpse into Layne's high school performances that hinted at the greatness to come. Journey through the complexities of "Dirt" as we dissect tracks like "Them Bones" and "Damn That River." We'll discuss Jerry Cantrell's vision, the band's interconnected relationships, and the raw, intense lyrics that define the album. From the haunting reflections on mortality to the visceral imagery of anger and pain, this chapter is a deep dive into the powerful themes that make "Dirt" stand out. And don't worry, we keep things light with shout-outs to Beavis and Butt-Head and some classic '90s pop culture.Ready for some critical takes and candid reviews? We're not holding back on the songs we dislike, but we'll also highlight the musical prowess behind them. Expect a heartfelt discussion on "Rooster," shedding light on Jerry Cantrell's father's Vietnam experiences, and a humorous critique of chaotic tracks like "God Smack." We'll wrap up with a nod to the album's relentless sound and its place in Alice in Chains' legacy. Tune in for an episode packed with humor, personal reflections, and a true appreciation for one of rock's greatest albums.Support the Show.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Black Smoke Trigger over Zoom video!New Zealand rock juggernauts Black Smoke Trigger have unleashed their hard-hitting new single “The Way Down” today. The accompanying death-defying music video sees Black Smoke Trigger go to extreme lengths in pursuit of rock n roll glory. Filmed atop The Auckland Sky Tower, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, the video features the band performing on the rooftop 630ft up and guitarist, Charlie Wallace, jumping off the building whilst shredding a guitar solo.Produced by the legendary Nick Raskulinecz (Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, RUSH) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Muse, Prince), “The Way Down” is an arena ready rock anthem that combines a gigantic, toe tapping riff from leader and guitarist Charlie Wallace (creator of the hugely successful Guitar Mastery Method) with soaring vocals from frontman Baldrick, who's soaring vocal range channels icons like Chris Cornell and Layne Staley in both passion and versatility and a pummelling rhythm section courtesy of Bassist Dan Fulton, and drummer Josh Te Maro. The track follows the band's previous single “Caught In The Undertow”, the video for which was also a feat of extreme conditions. Filmed at Muriwai beach in Auckland, New Zealand and at a helicopter crash testing facility in a 3.6M deep pool, the whole band performed much of the song underwater, highlighting their dedication to creating unforgettable visual accompaniments for their hard-hitting rock anthems.Blending raw punk aggression with arena-ready hooks, “The Way Down” provides the perfect soundtrack as Black Smoke Trigger literally dives into the unknown. The latest single cements this ambitious quartet as heavy music's most daring new force. With elite musicianship honed from years of tireless work, Black Smoke Trigger show no signs of compromise in their pursuit of creating pure exhilarating rock chaos. Their unbridled passion bleeds through every note. The horizon shines bright for these Kiwi rock trailblazers. Stay tuned for much more to come.ABOUT BLACK SMOKE TRIGGERBlack Smoke Trigger are led by Wallace (creator of the hugely successful Guitar Mastery Method) whose insane talent provides everything from delicate melodic motifs to face-melting shred solos and stadium-conquering riffs. Mandatory Music and CD: Dirt by Alice in Chains

Dirt Review from All Music Dirt Review by Steve Huey Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, and queasily disorienting, keeping the listener off balance with atonal riffs and off-kilter time signatures. Staley's stark confessional lyrics are similarly effective, and consistently miserable. Sometimes he's just numb and apathetic, totally desensitized to the outside world; sometimes his self-justifications betray a shockingly casual amorality; his moments of self-recognition are permeated by despair and suicidal self-loathing. Even given its subject matter, Dirt is monstrously bleak, closely resembling the cracked, haunted landscape of its cover art. The album holds out little hope for its protagonists (aside from the much-needed survival story of "Rooster," a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam-vet father), but in the end, it's redeemed by the honesty of its self-revelation and the sharp focus of its music. [Some versions of Dirt feature "Down in a Hole" as the next-to-last track rather than the fourth.] --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

Minnesota-based singer/songwriter Tony Cuchetti brings us the lone 1995 release by grunge supergroup Mad Season, 'Above'. When Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and journeyman bass player John Baker Saunders met at rehab, they decided to form a band and brought in Layne Staley of Alice In Chains primarily because they thought he would benefit from being around some clean musicians. With Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin rounding out the band, they crafted this dense record of slow-burning jams that is as bleak a document of drug addiction as you're ever likely to hear. Songs featured in this episode: River Of Deceit (Live at the Moore, Seattle 1995) - Mad Season; Lay It On Me, The After - Tony Cuchetti; The Rooster - Alice In Chains; Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees; Wake Up, X-Ray Mind, River Of Deceit - Mad Season; Better Man - Pearl Jam; I'm Above, Artificial Red, Lifeless Dead - Mad Season; Hunger Strike - Temple Of The Dog; I Don't Know Anything, Long Gone Day - Mad Season; Voodoo - Godsmack; November Hotel - Mad Season; Riders On The Storm - The Doors; All Alone - Mad Season; Stubborn Bones - Tony Cuchetti
