- I LA er Rage Against The Machines single “Killing In The Name of” selve kernen af en rasende rap metal-revolution, mens Bodycount heller ikke lægger fingre imellem på deres debutalbum. - Nirvanas Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain og Alice in Chains-sanger Layne Staley dyrker danske Mercyful Fate i stor stil.

Though they were one of the first so-called “grunge” bands to sign to a major label, Alice in Chains were something of an outlier in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s Seattle scene. They didn't fall directly into the punk camp, or the hair metal camp, and even the true metalheads thought they weren't hardcore enough. This became painfully evident when the band opened a tour for Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, and were hazed, spat on, and booed. Alice's lead singer, Layne Staley, could take the criticism. He had a prankster's spirit, not to mention a rock ‘n roll attitude that paired well with his killer rock ‘n roll voice. But newfound fame was overwhelming, as was the destructive addiction to heroin Layne developed to deal with it all. Soon Layne Staley found himself lost in a jungle of his own making, not unlike the jungle that he sang so convincingly about in one of Alice in Chains' most endearing songs. On today's show, we're chatting with Tacee Webb, the original founder of Red Light Vintage in Seattle – a store she first opened in her early 20s in 1996 and is now buying back from its current owners 30 years later! Full circle story! Red Light has been a Seattle institution since the grunge era, known for its eclectic mix of vintage finds from the 1930s through the 1990s, its vibrant community spirit, and oh yes – its legendary naked shopping sprees. In this episode, Tacee takes us on a journey that starts on a tiny island near the Canadian border, where she grew up surrounded by her family's belongings dating back to the 1860s – from her Native American grandmother's furniture to Victorian dresses in the old log cabin. She shares how selling rusty anchors and clay pinch pots on the beach as a kid planted the seeds for a career in retail, and how an encounter with a glamorous vintage dealer in her teens changed everything for her. We dive into the wild days of Red Light in the '90s – when MTV was filming there, Courtney Love was tearing through the store, and Tacee became one of the biggest sneaker resellers in the business – at the time she was featured in the Wall Street Journal, Vogue, NPR, People, CNN, and tons of magazines in Japan. "We would get 100 voice mails a day – people calling me to sell their sneakers from all over the country, it was WILD!" Tacee wrote me. She shares stories about styling Alice in Chains for Rolling Stone, hosting bands like Modest Mouse in the store's cafe, and why she old Red Light in 1999, the bittersweet reality of watching Seattle boom and price out the creative class. Late last year, when she saw the Vanishing Seattle post announcing the original store's potential closure, she knew she wanted it back. Now, partnering with her daughter – who's been part of the Red Light story since she was a baby – Tacee is bringing back the beloved traditions while reimagining vintage retail for a new generation. It's a conversation spanning decades of vintage fashion history from someone who's lived it all. This episode is SUCH a fun one, so let's dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [7:09] Growing up on the San Juan islands in Washington, and her first "store" called The Rust Factory. [10:42] How Tacee's style evolved from small-town vintage fashion lover, influenced by Madonna, her Pan Am flight attendant mother's Pucci collection, and family heirlooms. [15:46] Her first encounter with vintage dealer Gloria and putting a 1890s wedding gown on layaway as a teenager. [18:59] Red Light became a vintage hub on the Avenue in Seattle after it opened in 1996. [22:12] Red Light was grunge rock headquarters including a cafe space where bands like Modest Mouse played, and MTV filming there constantly. [26:34] How Red Light approached vintage retail like traditional retail in the '90s. [28:15] The reworking and upcycling happening at Red Light in the '90s [29:38] Stories from the grunge era: styling Layne Staley for Rolling Stone, having Kurt Cobain's clothing in the store, and Courtney Love's shopping sprees. [37:36] Why Tacee sold Red Light in Seattle back in 1999. [42:15] How seeing the Vanishing Seattle post about Red Light potentially closing made Tacee realize she wanted her store back. [44:06] Partnering with her daughter – who has been part of Red Light since she was a baby– to take over ownership. [48:27] Red Light will re-open under Tacee right in time for its 30th anniversary, with a celebration weekend including a fashion show, and the return of the naked shopping spree. [56:42] Reimagining Red Light for a new generation with a membership-based vintage wardrobe lending library. [1:05:08] People kept asking Tacee when vintage would "go out of style" in the '90s, and her philosophy on fashion cycles. [1:08:33] How Tacee created vintage denim and sneaker buying guides in the '90s (pre-internet!) to educate dealers and pickers. [1:09:58] Tacee's massive sneaker buying operation and trips to Japan. [1:22:54] Her parents' incredible vintage collection on the San Juan island [1:25:12] Plans for an anti-fascist themed fashion show as a benefit for ACLU and other local organizations, including other vintage shops and dealers. On April 5, 2002, Layne Staley — the hauntingly gifted frontman of Alice in Chains whose voice carried the ache, rage, and beauty of an entire generation — died alone in his Seattle apartment at the age of 34, closing the final chapter on one of rock music's most tortured and transcendent lives. From the moment Alice in Chains emerged out of the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s, Staley's raw, wounded harmonies and unflinching vulnerability helped define the darker emotional core of the grunge movement. His death, arriving years after he stepped back from the public eye yet still painfully soon for the millions who felt connected to his music, transformed an already enigmatic figure into something larger — a symbol of artistic brilliance shadowed by addiction, isolation, and a pain too great to outrun. Nik, Keefy , and Don continue our foray into @aliceinchains with their 1995 self-titled album affectionately called "Tripod" - much to their dismay. This album seemed like a labor of love to finish in the face of tough circumstances. What do you think of this experimental album? Critics didn't love when it released, but has grown in admiration over time. Check out our last series on the first 15 years of Ozzy Osbourne's solo career • Ozzy Osbourne
Three brilliant frontmen lit up the 1990s with voices that could break your heart with songs that still echo today. Jeff Buckley soared with Grace before vanishing into a Memphis river. Blind Melon's Shannon Hoon danced barefoot through MTV fame, only to spiral into addiction on a tour bus in New Orleans. Alice in Chains' Layne Staley turned despair into anthems, then faded into reclusion until his lonely death in Seattle. This episode unpacks their meteoric rises, their drug-fueled downfalls, and the enduring legacies they left behind.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store

On this week's episode of the Music History In Depth Podcast, grunge music has its saddest date, as two singers leave us way too soon. The loss of an American leader inspires a great song from a group from Ireland. This week a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, sharing a sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band that is near and dear to both of you humble hosts. A band whose unique harmonies and awesome riffs inspired both hosts to pick up guitars and start singing; the amazing Seattle grunge gods ALICE IN CHAINS! Join us as we discover other bands influenced and inspired by AIC's revolutionary game-changing music. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and it has also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Cicadastone – “Dime A Dozen” from Cold Chamber (2021)A Pale Horse Named Death – “Heroin Train” from And Hell Will Follow Me (2011)Drain STH – “Serve The Shame (acoustic)” from Horror Wrestling (1998)EMBASSYROWE – “Volition” from Dreamliar (2024)Failure – “Let It Drip” from Magnified (1994)Seventh Void – “Shadow On Me” from Heaven Is Gone (2009)My Sister's Machine – “Wasting Time” from Diva (1992)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

This week we are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. Captain Content reminds us that a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. We hope that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Neurotic Outsiders – “Nasty Ho” from Neurotic Outsiders (1996)Thrasher – “Bad Boys” from Thrasher (1985)Heavy Bones – “4:AM T-M” from Heavy Bones (1991)Ultra Bomb – “Time To Burn” from Time To Burn (2022)Saints Of The Underground - “Tomorrow Never Comes” from Love The Sin, Hate The Sinner (2008)Mad Season – “Lifeless Dead” from Above (1995)Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” from Division One (1985)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
