Sam Mills is a British writer who has always turned to fictional characters for answers in her life. Whether that was Roald Dahl's Matilda when she was younger or Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway as an adult, they've always been the language she's used to interpret her situation. As a child, Sam didn't understand why her dad would disappear for long stretches of time so she'd tell her classmates he'd been abducted by a gang and was being held hostage. These were stories inspired by some of her favourite authors. When she was 14 years old she found out what was really happening, her father had schizophrenia. Sam's favourite storybooks continued to help her to process the world and when she became her father's primary carer, they became a lifeline. Sam has written a book about her experience called Fragments of My Father. Presenter: Emily Webb Producer: Alice Gioia Picture: Pages of a book Credit: BBC

Lydia was pukey-sick for this episode, and I think my delivery reflects some of the stress I was feeling. Sorry about that. Lydia delivers an amazing impersonation of What If World's former president, J.F. Cat, though! This short chapter contains a surprisingly progressive argument in favor of Believing Children. I like it quite a lot. Irene has the advantage of being a Princess, of course, which works out in her favor. Lydia and I are currently reading Roald Dahl's Matilda, which is great, but the combination makes me feel sad for all the children who don't have genius or power working in their favor in bad situations. We all love our kids. Sometimes they're exasperating, but so are we. Let's be kind to smaller people. Leave us a message if you're having fun. This episode of Pic.Think: FILM is a one-to-one discussion on Danny DeVito's rendition of Roald Dahl's Matilda with Sy & Raveen. In the first part (Childhood movies & literature), we start off the conversation taking a stroll down memory lane by first considering which 1990s movies defined our children. We also reminisce on what childhood books we read or wished we had. Throughout both the second and third part (Childhood vs. Adulthood), we review Matilda by comparing how we felt watching as a youth versus how we feel watching as adults. We discuss the memorable scenes, characters, messages taken from the film etc.

It's colourful, quotable and it inspired a generation of children to spend countless hours fruitlessly staring at glasses of water... this week on Beyond The Box Set, we continue our actors-turned-directors mini-season with a look back at Danny DeVito's utterly delightful adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda. Already an emerging child star thanks to roles in classic movies like Mrs Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street, Mara Wilson turned in the defining role of her career as the book-loving heroine Matilda Wormwood. Character actress Pam Ferris, meanwhile, chewed scenery with abandon as the monstrous Ms Trunchbull, proving that the best movie villains should always be characters we secretly sort of root for. In this week's episode - the latest edition in our ongoing series on movies by actors-turned-directors - we look back at the delicate balance of darkness and whimsy that makes Matilda one of the all time great films for children, and attempt to brainstorm what a sequel might look like over twenty years later... ----- Beyond The Box Set is the hit British movie podcast in which two movie-loving idiots take a classic standalone movie each week, and attempt to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Our show is available on all major Podcasting platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify and more. We're also active on most forms of social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
