On Halloween Night 1992, the BBC aired Ghostwatch, which purported to be a live investigation into a house and family that had been plagued by poltergeist activity. The studio segments were hosted by Michael Parkinson, while children's presenter Sarah Greene explored the house and interviewed the family at the center of the haunting. Things started to go very wrong and the show ended in disaster. Due to a quirk of scheduling, a large part of the audience didn't realise that it was all fake. Ghostwatch is frequently listed as one of the scariest TV moments of all time. Ghostwatch was written by Stephen Volk and directed by Lesley Manning. Comics writer and artist Nick Roche joins us to relive his experience of watching Ghostwatch, aged 13, dressed as Batman for Halloween. Nick is @NickRoche. His orignal graphic novel Scarenthood is out now and he's currently the robot designer for Transformers:EarthSpark on Nickolodeon. Alan is @alan_maguire. We talk about that voice, those melodies, that guitar playing, the time he and Louis theroux interviewed each other for Select Magazine, his creative partnership with Jon Brion and so much more. Sidenote: consider this a kind of reverse trigger warning: we don't talk about any details of Elliott Smith's death or engage in any speculation around it in this episode. Here's the Elliott Smith and Jon Brion show we mention https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK4okHerWeI and here's the Elliott Smith/Louis Theroux interview https://selectmagazinescans.monkeon.co.uk/?p=2571 Alan is @alan_maguire. Welcome to our first proper episode of 2024. If you listened to our Weezer episode or our Patreon episodes then you know that Andrea and Alan are big fans of Pat Finnerty. Pat makes a fantastic youtube series called What Makes This Song Stink. We were delighted when he agreed to appear on the show and even more delighted when he picked Spinal Tap. What's this? What's this? Meg Hyland's back to talk to us about The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jenny Maguire is one of the co-ordinators of Trans And Intersex Pride Dublin and she's been obsessively watching Drag Race since she was eleven years old so it seemed only right that she came on Juvenalia to talk to us all about it. Alan is a former big fan who's fallen off a bit and Andrea watched her first season of Drag Race for this episode. It was a good mix, we had a good time. (we had some zoom issues so sorry if some of ther audio is a little wonky) Jenny is @JennyMaguir. You can learn more about Trans And Intersex Pride Dublin here Alan is @alan_maguire. Hello, everybody's scheduled got all messed up so we didn't get a chance to record a new episode this week. We thought you might like to check out our Patreon-only bonus series Started/Finished where we, guess what, talk about what we've started and finished lately. In this one from earlier this year, Alan and Sarah talk about Citizen Sleeper, Tunic, Piranesi, Pokerface, and Chris Ware. We hope you like it and we'll be back with a regular episode in two weeks. Started/Finished is a looser recording environment than Juvenalia so you'll occasionally hear footsteps from pets and spouses during the ep but hopefully it's not too distracting. Marty Ryan of Limerick band Anna's Anchor joins us as we dive into the sweaty indie night in 2006 to talk about landfill indie. All the greats are mentioned, The View, The Pigeon Detectives, The Wombats. We also try to figure out what makes a landfill indie band and take some time to mention the bands that get lumped into that genre that we still actually like quite a lot like The Futureheads and Maximo Park. Marty is the frontman of Anna's Anchor. Their new album The Merries is out now on Strange Brew. Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Andrea @AndreaCleary_. Writer and broadcaster Aoife Barry returns to the podcast and she's brought one of the big topics, one we assumed would have come up at some point in the previous 178 episodes but it's here now and that's the important thing. It's Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride! We enthuse wildly about the film before jumping into a discussion about the types of films Hollywood is willing to make now. It's a great hour. Aoife is @SweetOblivion26. Aoife's book Social Capital, which is excellent, is out now. Alan is @alan_maguire. He does a bit of standup but Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski. We thought it might be nice if we got all three of us on the same episode for once to tell each other about something we thought the others might not know about. Sarah told us about the Tower Of The Sun in Osaka. Alan told us about Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter's Long Earth series, and Andrea told us about Ryan Gosling's 2009 folk-horror-doo wop album Dead Man's Bones. We hope you like it. Allegra is a longtime superfan of all Weezer, Alan and Andrea are longtime superfans of early Weezer so it was a good chance to explore the bits of Weezer that we maybe haven't given a fair shake over the years. PARKLIFE, SunshEEEine, and so forth. We're talking about the cultural juggernaut (for approximately five years) that was Britpop with Michael Orange aka Feather Beds. We talk about Blur v Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene deep cuts, and try to figure out if The Bends was Britpop. Along the way we take diversions into No Disco, 120 Minutes, and City Pop. Artist and podcaster Carly Monardo returns to us for the third time and this time we've got a doozy. We're talking about Bloc Party's debut album Silent Alarm (2005). We talked a lot about being twenty. It's very much about being twenty and working in Urban Outfitters, and discovering things for yourself. We also took a slight detour to deliver a pep talk about following your dreams and making that thing. This is a good one, you'll like it. Carly is @whirringblender. She stars in Rude Tales Of Magic and Oh These, Those Stars Of Space which are both extremely worth your time. Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski. We're seven years old today! To celebrate, we decided to put one of our Patreon-only episodes up for everybody. On our bonus series Started/Finished, we talk about what we've started and finished lately. On this one from Jul 2022, Alan and Andrea talk about Stranger Things, Elena Ferrante, Disney Cruise Youtube Walkthroughs, and the Portal games. One of these things turned into an extended discussion about Weezer and Pat Finnerty. You'll never guess which one. Started/Finished is usually only available to our Slammer level patrons. There are currently 22 episodes of Started/Finished along with other bonus episodes, zines, and outtakes at patreon.com/juvenalia Thank you so much to everybody who's ever listened to an episode or shared the show. Thanks to Dee McDonnell for our artwork which still slaps. Thank you to Cassie Delaney for having us on Tall Tales.

Comedian, screenwriter, and director Becky Cheatle joins us as we take another look at Star Wars! Musician Gavin McDermott aka Dashoda joins Alan and Sarah for a big talk about the console that gave us Ocarina Of Time, Mario 64, and Goldeneye, amongst other classics, Nintendo's N64. We talked about all of them but we found ourselves coming back again and again to Goldeneye. Alan was a Sega child so this was an educational week for him. Sarah is, of course, 1/4 Nintendo so had lots to talk about with Gavin. Dashoda is @DashodaMusic. Dashoda will release his debut EP Never Enough on Wednesday 15th March 2023. Ok, so we definitely thought we had this scheduled to go up over Christmas but we just came back from our holidays and it turns out we messed up. Sorry. You're probably still making your way through all the Christmas specials from other podcasts anyway so what's one more eh? Alan and Sarah have never seen It's A Wonderful Life. Sarah and Cassie have never seen Die Hard. Alan, Sarah AND Andrea have never seen The Holiday so we decided to watch all of them and see what the fuss was about. (Spolier alert: We all hated The Holiday. Sorry to fans of that one.) Thanks for sticking with us in 2022 as we tried to regain our footing and our ability to schedule podcasts after everything. Happy New Year! Andrea is not on twitter anymore. You can hear her on The Nialler9 Podcast and My Favourite Album with Andrea Cleary. You can hear Cassie on The Creep Dive. Alan is @alan_maguire. It's the winter time do we've got some more recommendations for you. Not, I repeat, not Christmas recommendations. You have to follow your own bliss at Christmas. No, instead Alan and Sarah are here to talk about things that feel wintery-but-not-Christmassy to them. Things like Windwaker, Sigur Ros's (), Mulled Wine and Nigella's Roast Chicken, Twin Peaks, and Mount Eerie. Extremely un-festive we're sure you'll agree. Alan is @alan_maguire.
