Driving instructor Rose Dooley lives alone in rural Ireland, but in fact she's hardly ever alone. The local residents call Rose any time they have a, shall we say, ghost problem. Which happens more often than you'd think. You see, Rose's father, the late ghost hunter Vincent Dooley, has imbued Rose with certain ‘talents' to divine and chat up ghosts that are giving people a hard time. That's when she's approached by one Martin Martin, a woodworker whose late wife has been making his life hell for the past several years, constantly berating him and his choices from beyond the grave. Martin's daughter Sarah is growing up and has ideas of her own. At the same time, determined to sell his soul for a revived career, washed up American pop star Christian and his wife Claudia have been picking out virgins to sacrifice, and soon set their sights on Sarah Martin. It's up to Rose and Martin to foil the Winters' nefarious schemes, and to make sure it's "curtains for Christian." Humans encounter non-human intelligences of various kinds and try to make sense of them. Prologue: Ira has some thoughts about our country's long history of alien invasion movies. (2 minutes)Act One: In this past year we've witnessed a revolution in A.I. since the public rollout of ChatGPT. Our Senior Editor David Kestenbaum thinks that even though there's been a ton of coverage, there's one thing people haven't talked much about: have these machines gotten to the point that they're starting to have something like human intelligence? Where they actually understand language and concepts, and can reason? He talks with scientists at Microsoft who've been trying to figure that out. (30 minutes)Act Two: A short piece of fiction from the perspective of aliens who've been scouting Earth, from writer Terry Bisson. It's called “They're Made Out of Meat.” It's performed by actors Maeve Higgins and H Jon Benjamin. (5 minutes)Act Three: A species of massive, mysterious, highly intelligent beings have recently been making contact with humanity. Or our boats, anyway. Many people seem convinced they are seeking revenge for past injustices. Producer Chris Benderev wondered if that was true. (7 minutes)Act Four: Many of us, especially when we're young, feel like we're the alien, trying to understand and fit in with the humans on this planet. Producer Diane Wu spent some time recently with a teenage humanoid who feels that way. (15 minutes)Transcripts are available at thisamericanlife.org

On a list of the least funny topics imaginable, the global refugee crisis, border disputes and questions of citizenship are probably close to the top. And yet comedian Maeve Higgins has spent her career finding ways to make jokes about (and make sense of) the ways we draw lines across the globe. She's a stand-up comedian and writer who speaks from the point of view of an Irish immigrant in the United States. In this excerpt from How to Be a Better Human, a TED Audio Collective podcast hosted by Chris Duffy, Maeve talks about ways we can find funny and eye-opening vantage points to look at the realities and borders of the world, our place in it and how imagination and laughter can help us through tough times. We asked Chris to select a book that he thinks explores these topics more deeply, and he selected "There There" by Tommy Orange. Listen for his recommendation and why he thinks it's "like the best action movie and one of the smartest sociological and historical essays paired together." This episode is part of the TED Talks Daily summer book club, a series featuring talks and interviews to inspire your next great read.

In this episode I interviewed American journalist and lawyer Alia Malek, whose work has been published by the New York Times and New Yorker. I spoke to her about her 2017 book The Home That Was Our Country, which is partly about moving to her grandmother's flat in Damascus from 2011 to 2013, but also about Syria. We talked about the murder of one of her relatives when she was on a childhood visit to Syria, the disappearance of people in Damascus over the years, and the descent into war. We also talked about how she wrote the book, not just the reportage, but also using material written by her family, interviewing her family, and researching the history of the country. You can buy Alia's book here: https://uk.bookshop.org/books/the-home-that-was-our-country-a-memoir-of-syria/9781568588445The article mentioned which she recently wrote for the New York Times is here: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/25/magazine/germany-trial-syria.htmlShe mentioned two nonfiction books. Part 2: After a reluctant start, mathematician Ken Ono makes an unexpected discovery. Aparna Nancherla is a comedian and general silly billy. She also has a half-hour special on the second season of The Standups on Netflix, as well as appearances on Late Night with Stephen Colbert on CBS and Two Dope Queens on HBO. Other acting credits include A Simple Favor, Crashing, High Maintenance, Master of None, and Inside Amy Schumer. Aparna was also named one of “The 50 Funniest People Right Now” by Rolling Stone. She also co-hosted the 2018 Women's March Rally in NYC. In 2019, she was in a Super Bowl commercial with Michael Bublé for sparkling water neé seltzer. In 2016, she released her debut album, Just Putting It Out There, on Tig Notaro's label, Bentzen Ball Records, and recorded a half hour special for Comedy Central. On Monday nights, she co-hosts Butterboy at Littlefield in Park Slope, Brooklyn at 8 p.m. with genius treasures Jo Firestone and Maeve Higgins. Ken Ono is the Thomas Jefferson Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia and the Chair of Mathematics at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has published over 200 research articles in number theory. Professor Ono has received many awards for his research, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Packard Fellowship and a Sloan Fellowship. He was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE) by Bill Clinton in 2000, and he was named the National Science Foundation's Distinguished Teaching Scholar in 2005.
