Miss Honey stans, grab your chocolate cake—our Book Club Month wraps with Danny DeVito's charmingly chaotic Matilda film review. In Season 8, Episode 20 of the So Many Sequels podcast, Josh and David dig into Roald Dahl's pint‑sized heroine, telekinetic justice, and the 90s VHS afterlife that turned a box‑office underdog into a cult classic. We debate Trunchbull nightmare fuel, gush over Mara Wilson's book‑devouring genius, and crown the weirdest narrator choice in movie history (sorry, Danny). We also tackle banned‑book controversies, the power of found family, and why Miss Honey would make a killer narrator. Plus insider trivia on chocolate‑cake chaos, box‑office flops bigger than a newt, and our own nostalgic tales of conquering multiplication like Matilda. What does it really take to survive as a professional author? In this refreshingly honest conversation, bestselling and award winning Maz Evans of 'Who Let the Gods Out' and I pull back the curtain on the realities of writing for a living."We aren't writers floating around in scarves," Maz declares with her characteristic wit. "We're business people running a business." This sentiment sets the tone for a discussion that reveals the genuine struggle behind the glamorous facade of publishing success. From the physical toll of deadline weeks (surviving on Uber Eats and forsaking personal grooming) to the mental exhaustion that accompanies creating a 100,000-word manuscript, both authors share their unfiltered experiences. Yet despite the challenges, Maz Evan's passion for storytelling remains undimmed. Maz shares details about her new comedy crime novel "That'll Teach You". For anyone who loves books or dreams of writing them, this conversation offers valuable perspective on what sustains authors through rejection, financial uncertainty, and creative doubt. As Maz perfectly summarizes: "The biggest success is staying in the game."That'll Teach HerA headmistress is dead. The circumstances are suspicious. And as every parent knows, being on the school group chat can be murder...As educators go, Claudia Stitchwell makes Miss Hannigan look like Miss Honey. But when the reviled headteacher drops dead in the school hall, a group of sceptical parents suspect the nut allergy explanation doesn't add up - they believe someone wanted to teach Miss Stitchwell a lesson. Only four people could have killed Stitchwell: Hattie, the adored school cook; Kiera, the hard-working teaching assistant; Clive, the loathed school bursar and Ben, the popular deputy head. All of them are liars... but only one is the murderer.Piecing together evidence from the daily drama and drudgery of the parents' group chat, local press, police reports, school newsletters, and good, old-fashionedSend us a textSupport the show"Enjoying 'The Conversation'? Tom Salinsky and John Dorney and from Best Pick podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Matilda the Musical. Matilda the Musical (2022) is a musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel based on the stage musical by Tim Minchin. It is directed by Matthew (Pride) Warchus and stars Alisha Weir as Matilda alongside Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Mr and Mrs Wormwood and Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull. Matilda the Musical follows the same story as the classic novel. Forever the disappointment of her family for not being born a boy, Matilda finds joy and escapism in reading. When it is discovered she has never been to school she is sent to Crunchem Hall. While at school she impresses the shy Miss Honey and irritates the angry and violent Miss Trunchbull with her precocious talents. Where it differs from the novel is the sub plot of an escapologist who falls in love with and marries an acrobat that is reoccurring. Is Matilda the best musical film of the last 20 years? It is according to Tom! Helen was less convinced, the addition of the unnecessary acrobat plot takes away from the original magic of the book and makes it a two hour film. While recommendability was pretty high its two hour runtime meant lower repeat and engagement scores, to give an overall rating of 4.16. We wrap up Family Movie Month with what can best be described as “Carrie” for kids. (With a surprising scoop of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and an important connection to “Scream 2”!) Despite its spooky undertones (and Roald Dahl roots), “Matilda” is also an enthralling coming of age story featuring small legend Mara Wilson, Embeth Davidtz's Icon to the Introverted, Miss Honey, TV royalty Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Best Supporting Jean Speegel Howard and Pam Ferris tearing the scenery from limb to limb as Trunchbull. Welcome to Bad Dad Rad Dad, where Kylie and Elliott talk about the movies they watch each week while searching for better cinematic dads. Along the way, they reflect on the resonance of ghosts, feel sad that they don't have telekinetic powers, challenge the critics who pee-pee-poo-poo-ed a 2002 film, swear a contemporary horror villain was inspired by Tom Hulce's Mozart, and feel the heaviness of a new film. This week's movies are: A Ghost Story (2017), Matilda (1996), Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (2002), Amadeus (1984), and The Zone Of Interest (2023).See Kylie & Elliott's matching ghost tattoos (inspired by Beetlejuice). Working to Live: Finding the Balance with Rob Regan What's the most important thing to you in life? Most people would say something like friends, family, or living comfortably. But how much of your time goes to those things? More often than not, 'successful' people spend almost all their days in their careers, unable to be with the things they say are the most important. This episode delves into the concept of "working to live" as we explore Rob Regan's journey. He describes the three most powerful years in his life and how they all involve the most important things to him: family, rugby, and work. Most executives get completely stuck at the office, but Rob has found the balance between work and the rest of his life. As for how he did it, sometimes we really have to take a terrifying step away from what we've been doing all our lives. If you're wondering how to get back to what you love the most while still managing your career — and, frankly, the rest of your life — then this episode is for you. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Discover the art of working to live. Learn what it means to be genuinely vulnerable — no matter how tough you seem. Uncover what it means to become who you are and return to what's most important to you, even if you've lost touch for a while. Resources Contact Rob on LinkedIn Coaching with Angela Cox Listen to The Mindset Mentor Meets Episode Highlights [01:43] Rob's Balancing Act Rob tries to balance his life around family, rugby, and work. His wife, Nicola, might disagree on his priorities, but he does his best to keep things equal. He admits that he doesn't do much outside those three things. Rob also questions himself often: can he say he's proud of himself, or is he proud of what he's done? [03:31] First of the Biggest Years: 2010 Rob's biggest years and proudest moments involve the birth of his daughter, Amy, in 2010. Rob and Nicola had difficulty having Amy and needed to undergo IVF. But Amy came into this world successfully. 2010 was also a big year for him and rugby. Rob admits that he doesn't have a talent for rugby, but his skill in the sport — like at work — comes from tremendous effort to build himself up rather than innate talent. He captained the Bromley RFC's third team at 35, leading them to a big win over their rivals in a high-scoring game. [08:56] A Story of Childhood Sweethearts Nicola and Rob got together at 14 and stayed together for nine years. Rob admits that he wasn't a good partner at the time — and even says that he ticked every box on how not to be a great boyfriend. They eventually split up in their early twenties and got married to different partners but returned to each other much later on. [10:32] Second of the Biggest Years: 2020 In 2020, Rob experienced the COVID lockdown. It was tough for Amy, as she had joined several clubs that required being physically at the club. Rob is particularly proud of how his family, particularly Amy, worked together to overcome the challenges of being in a lockdown. On his end, Rob was about to sell his company, which made his work life extremely difficult. Rob didn't feel that he was working at home. Instead, he felt that he was living at work. While his proudest moments in 2020 were the excellent outcomes for Amy, Rob is also glad that he learned to prioritise himself and his family over work. [17:31] Becoming Who You Are, Again 2020 was a period of enormous changes for Rob, between leaving Royal London, selling the business, and the looming pandemic. Rob said that he'd been struggling with a complete loss of identity. His raison d'etre had been work for so long and nothing else. [20:10] Third of the Biggest Years: 2023 In 2023, Amy played the part of Miss Honey in Matilda. On the last night of the performances, a little girl asked Amy for her autograph. Amy was somewhat nervous and anxious growing up but being in theatre boosted her confidence. 2023 was also about mental health for Rob and Nicola. Nicola's healthier now after receiving a cancer diagnosis back in 2018. On Rob's end, the Principality Building Society has a healthy culture that takes employee well-being seriously. He ended up telling his life story during a lunch and learn session. [25:37] What It Means to Be Vulnerable Many people, particularly executives, view vulnerability as a tick-box exercise. However, true vulnerability is raw honesty. Being vulnerable, according to Rob, is unsettling and scary. He admits he's been a bit of a control freak all his life, so being vulnerable feels utterly alien. 2023 was a year of real enlightenment for Rob — it's taught him to recognise his flaws better. He's always felt out of his depth when it comes to work. Rob describes himself as the electrician who, somehow, ended up running a £17b investment business. [32:28] This Is What Matters Your job, titles and promotions matter less than you might think. Rob spent so much of his life chasing his career but found that his family was far more important than anything at his job. Rob has a few regrets, one of them involving how he treated people. He believes there's no excuse for that — you have to accept responsibility, even if you don't know how badly you acted at the time. [35:22] The Definition of Success Rob's secret to success is about defining success for yourself first. The environment most people live in is relentless, thankless, and in some work cultures, ruthless, making resilience a critical core trait. However, Rob's question about success is, ‘Are you comfortable with yourself and your own skin?' Rob's advice is to learn to like yourself without sounding too arrogant — you won't always please everyone. 5 Powerful Quotes [04:18] 'I'm not a great rugby player. My rugby life and my work life are very similar, which is: bags of effort, and no talent.' [16:22] ‘I finally realised that doing the right thing for yourself and your family was much more important than work — and it was absolutely terrifying. But I stepped away and decided I was going to retire.' [24:48] ‘I could never imagine me: thick-skinned, cauliflower ear, Welsh rugby bloke being able to say stuff that would help people and make a difference in our space.' [27:06] 'Every day is still a school day. I've got all the same flaws I've always had, but I'm getting better at recognising them.' [34:14] 'I wasn't always the best version of myself; I didn't always treat people the way that they deserve to be treated. I tried to correct some of that later on with some individuals, and they kind of look at you a bit, "Well, shame you didn't think of that 10, 15 years ago, but you can't change the past," and what I'll do is do a better job. About Rob Rob Regan is the CEO of the Principality Building Society, a multi-billion pound building society. Rob has worked as an executive in multiple companies, including the Lloyds Banking Group, Royal London, and Ascentric. However, at the end of everything, he discovered that family is the most important thing in life. You can connect with Rob through LinkedIn. Enjoy this Podcast? [School of Movies 2023] This, folks, is arguably the greatest adaptation of one of Roald Dahl's books made to date. Taking everything that was great about the 1988 book (one of his last, only followed by Esio Trot, The Vicar of Nibbleswick and The Minpins) and one of the abiding favourites for many kids and previously-kids who aren't entirely sure if they have truly grown up yet. It's about a schoolgirl who develops telekinetic powers that she uses to banish a truly horrific headteacher. But that is merely the skeletal plot, there is so much there about being lonely, being neglected and abused and using your frustrations for something positive (making this the Anti-Carrie). And that was conducted in the beloved Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito film from 1996. But in turning this thing into a successful West-End musical Tim Minchin added some truly memorable, frequently brilliant songs, a whole sub-plot about a story Matilda is weaving together, even more significance for the role of Miss Honey (played with astonishing fragility by Lashana Lynch). It's also a little less mean-spirited than a lot of Dahl's work, which makes it more suited to newer generations. Alisha Weir absolutely kills it as Matilda, and Emma Thompson is unrecognisably foul as the monstrous Agatha Trunchbull. This film adaptation of the musical play adaptation is a Netflix-funded production, so should be possible to see right now. And with Wonka on the way from the director of Paddington, we hope this is the beginning of a 2020s Dahlaissance.
In the season 8A (that's right, we're calling it now) finale, our podcast titans recount their trials and travails conquering the Crown Tundra; attempts to land that hot date with Miss Honey; the hideous Legendaries they fought in Dynamax Adventures; the Galarian Star Tournament and Ball Guy's bogus grand prize; and finally throw Drew England's Connecticut champions up against Wellington Smithsmith's wealthy industrialists to determine who has the most powerful team in the archipelago.
Wellington Smithsmith & Drew England make landfall on the Armor of Isle—sorry, that is, the Isle of Armor. They're immediately accosted by a couple of escaped circus freaks, who inadvertently introduce them to the locals' warriors path. Along with several children who have seemingly never wielded a Poké Ball before, they must complete three trials in order to ultimately take on the island's defender, Master Mustard. (And, in Drew England's case, win the affections of Miss Honey.) But it doesn't end there. They must also fall in love with a kung-fu bear and then climb a couple of scary towers so that it can finally become its truest self, or something poetic like that. Plus! Even more Wild Area antics.

2022 was definitely the everything bagel of movie years. No less an authority than Stephen Spielberg anointed Tom Cruise as the savior of movies this summer, which made sense given the success of "Top Gun: Maverick". Then came the fall, and excellent movies were released…and no one showed up. And even when they did, as with the $2.2 billion dollar gross accumulated by James Cameron's "Dances with Smurfs Part Deux", the movies barely seemed to make a dent in the cultural landscape. It didn't help that so many of our beloved directors released crappy movies: Aronofsky with the odious "The Whale", Russell with his how-could-it possibly-go-wrong-with-that-cast disaster "Amsterdam", Alex Garland with the puzzling (and not in an interesting way) "Men", Iñarritú inadvertently reminding us how brilliant both "Roma" and "8 ½" are with "Bardo", and the literal crapfest (elephant, in this case) that was "Babylon". Sometimes, it felt like 2022 was a living, breathing argument against the auteur theory. Yet there were some very good spots too, including not one but two really interesting portrait-of-the-filmmaker-as-a-young-man movies with "Fabelmans" and "Armageddon Time". The scene of the year? Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tar (née Linda Tarr of Staten Island!) arguing with one of her students about the pointlessness of cancelling Bach in Todd Fields' most welcome return. "Everything Everywhere" became the only film in history to win three acting Oscars and Best Picture. Underappreciated gems like "The Menu" and (sorry, John and Michael) "Don't Worry Darling", and even appreciated ones like "Aftersun" wormed their way into our brains and didn't let go, though I will never look at s'mores the same way again. And we even had a solid Oscars ceremony, with powerhouse performances by Rihanna and Lady Gaga and nearly an epic battle between Malala and Cocaine Bear. Plus, we got perhaps the most sublime moment in American film this century: David Lynch playing John Ford in a Spielberg film. That glorious scene almost took away the sour taste of the “Look, I'm doing Bergman!” montage of film history that ended "Babylon" not nearly soon enough. And while we liked "EO" better when it was "Au Hasard Balthasar", and "Living" better when it was "Ikiru", and we thought that the Siegfried Sassoon biopic "Benediction" was a better World War I film than "All Quiet", there were definitely some tasty tidbits to be found on that everything bagel. An up and down year, but to paraphrase the wondrous Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey in Matilda, it wasn't much, but it was enough for us.

Let's talk about the fiction vs reality of Matilda's MISS HONEY! She has inspired a generation of teachers. For so many she was actually the reason, the catalyst, the inspiration to get into the job of teaching. She was the saving grace to the kids she taught. She was generous, she was compassionate, she protected her students and their wellbeing from the incredibly punitive and nasty principal Ms Trunchbull, who used behaviour management strategies that were physically and psychologically abusive to the students at Crunchem Hall Primary School. However, her pedagogy wasn't on point, because it takes a hell of a lot more than just a smile and taking interest to have a class that is engaged, happy and ‘well-behaved'. Challenging classroom behaviour is complex and nuanced, and dealing with it, addressing it, resolving it, reducing it, mitigating it, is also complex and nuanced. In this episode, I discuss the ‘Miss Honey Trap' that leads teachers to believe that relationships are the only classroom management strategy needed, and go over my non-exhaustive list of things that actually go into classroom management on top of the relationships and your values around caring for each child:Classroom environment Culture settingPlanning and preparationExpectationsNon verbalsRoutinesStrategies to de-escalate behaviour - low and high levelCoregulation / self regulationRelationships with parentsFollowing up on behaviourUnderstanding behaviour itselfFor more information on Approachable vs Credible - Michael Grindrs ENVoY non-verbal language listen to episode 8 - Low Level Behaviours, Big Level Frustrations!

In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Arun and Patricia discuss about the 2022 musical film Matilda the Musical based on the 2010 stage show based on the 1988 book Matilda starring Alisha Weir, Lashana Lynch, Emma Thompson, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, and Sindhu Vee. Matilda Wormwood is an intelligent five year old girl who has mean parents who don't remotely care for her. They were fined because they didn't send her to school and they send her to Crunchem Hall lead by the cruel, strict, and disciplined headmistress Miss Trunchbull and taught by the kind, loving, and supportive teacher Miss Honey. She also spends her time with the librarian Miss Phelps telling her the story of an acrobat and escapologist in the circus. Overtime, Matilda becomes more assertive towards the adults who have wronged her and helps those who are in need thanks to her newly discovered telekinetic powers. Will she succeed? When the film premiered, it received positive reviews from critics despite fans of both the book and 1996 adaptation directed by Danny DeVito criticized it calling it "inferior" or pointing out the changes, casting, and creative liberties it did. What did Arun and Patricia think of it? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Episode 1 Show Notes: Let's Go Back to the Beginning... Welcome to Home, Addressed! We passionately believe that the best, most beautiful spaces tell our personal style stories. So in this first episode, we revisit the places and spaces that first introduced us to interior design: our childhood homes (s/o to our Moms!), our favorite tv and movie homes, and other formative people and places from our pasts. Here are the three takeaways from this episode: 1) Consider what you loved most about your childhood home and try to recreate those feelings. This can be searching out pieces of furniture (try digging through your parents' attic!), revisiting paint colors you loved or cushy chairs where you read books. Engaging your senses in nostalgic sights, smells or sounds will likely bring joy and comfort. 2) Jog your memory for other people you encountered who had great personal style: maybe it was that stylish old lady at church or a neighbor who decorated like no one was watching. Channel them to step outside of your comfort zone. 3) Rewatch films, books, movies you loved as a kid and teenager for inspiration. This practice will make your inner child feel loved and also remind you that design trends are cyclical and classic pieces are timeless. A few favorite movie/tv homes: *Father of the Bride house *Clarissa Explains it All room (Margo loves the red and pink quilt, Jourdan loves how Clarissa's rebellious self-expression) *Cher's way normal closet (as if!) *Berenstain Bears treehouse *Miss Honey's house in Matilda *Angelina Ballerina *Little Women *Brambly Hedge Other related articles: *How our childhood homes shape us *Reimagining a childhood home (with a Hollywood twist)
To mark ten years since stalking became a specific crime in England and Wales, we speak to crime reporter and presenter Isla Traquair. In her day job Isla is used to confronting murderers and travelling to dangerous places but it was in a quiet village in Wiltshire where her stalking ordeal took place. In August this year Isla's neighbour, Jonathan Barrett, was found guilty of stalking. This followed what Isla calls a 7 month period of terror from March to September 2021. 99% of all boxers are men and it remains a male dominated sport in all areas. We speak to Susannah Schofield OBE who hopes to harness the growing appetite for women's sport with the recent successes of women's football and rugby by convincing the BBC to show women's boxing. New research shows the clitoris actually has over 10,000 nerve endings. 20% more than the previously suggested amount from studies on cows in the 1970s. Does this increase in number matter? We ask science journalist Rachel E Gross and Dr Brooke Vandermolen, an NHS Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar. Why is it that we so often struggle or fail in long term relationships? We're talking instead about unremarkable everyday behaviours that help to end a marriage. We speak to couples therapist, Joanna Harrison and relationship coach, Matthew Fray. The actor Andrea Riseborough tells us about playing Mrs Wormwood in the new Matilda the Musical film. The film is an adaptation of Tim Minchin's hit West End musical of the same name. It stars Emma Thompson as Mrs Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey and Stephen Graham as Mr Wormwood. She talks about playing one of Roald Dahl's most famous characters and her life off camera, meeting Patti Smith for the first time. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Surya Elango Editor: Emma Pearce
