Half the states in the US have passed age verification laws that put pornography under threat. Not only does this compromise a vital industry, it puts all of free speech in danger as well. Today, Adam is joined by Siri Dahl, an adult performer and outspoken critic of age verification laws, and Noelle Purdue, a writer and internet porn historian. Together, they discuss how attacks on porn have been an entry point for devastating impingements on civil liberties.SUPPORT THE SHOW ON PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/adamconoverSEE ADAM ON TOUR: https://www.adamconover.net/tourdates/SUBSCRIBE to and RATE Factually! on:» Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/factually-with-adam-conover/id1463460577» Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0fK8WJw4ffMc2NWydBlDyJAbout Headgum: Headgum is an LA & NY-based podcast network creating premium podcasts with the funniest, most engaging voices in comedy to achieve one goal: Making our audience and ourselves laugh. In this episode of the show we are embarking on the 11th mini-run of the year and we are contributing to the tradition of observing Noir-Vember. On this occasion, we will spend the entire month talking about films directed by John Dahl - The John Dahl Fall, so to speak. And we begin our deliberations with Dahl's 1989 debut Kill Me Again. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about the ways in which Dahl's movie adds to the noir tradition, how it executes on the genre playbook and whether it attempts to subvert any of its staples. We also position the film within the wave of neo-noir sweeping the medium at the time, if the movie had enough star power to stand out in the busy release slate and if it needed some extra oomph to become more noticeable.Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsFeaturing: Rich FosterIntro: Infraction - CassetteOutro: Infraction - DaydreamHead over to uncutgemspodcast.com to find all of our archival episodes and more!Follow us on Twitter (@UncutGemsPod), IG (@UncutGemsPod) and Facebook (@UncutGemsPod)Buy us a coffee over at Ko-Fi.com (ko-fi.com/uncutgemspod)Subscribe to our Patreon! In this episode of the Getting Smart Podcast, Tom Vander Ark sits down with Dr. Ronald Dahl, a distinguished pediatrician and developmental scientist from UC Berkeley, to explore the transformative potential of adolescence. Together, they discuss why adolescence is not just a period of vulnerability but also a dynamic window of opportunity for learning, growth, and authentic contribution. Dr. Dahl highlights the importance of fostering agency, mattering, and experiential learning environments that allow young people to feel valued and empowered. From the neuroscience of brain plasticity to the actionable steps educators and leaders can take to create supportive systems, this conversation dives deep into how we can rethink adolescent development and learning. On season 10, episode 9 of Paid in Puke, we're falling for John Dahl's 1993 neo-noir The Last Seduction, starring Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, and Bill Pullman. Fiorentino commands the screen as a femme fatale who is as brilliant and sexy as she is cold, and calculating. She steals the whole pot from a joint drug deal devised with her husband (Pullman), and hides out in small town in upstate NY. There, she passes the time with a naive townie (Berg), who eventually proves himself to be useful in ways other than sex. Dahl directed this film as a black comedy, but the script is also extremely smart and tight, making it a standout of the 90's neo-noir genre. We have a lot of fun dissecting Bridget's schemes, appreciating her fashion and quick wit, marveling at the range of Bill Pullman, the ahead-of its time race and homophobia commentary (including a non-problematic trans character played by an actual trans woman!) and the surprising connections to Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar. On the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal the aliases we would adopt if we were ever to go on the lam.
Dr. Dahl presented a Real Science webinar on heat stress on April 1, 2025. You can find the webinar at balchem.com/realscience. This episode of Real Science Exchange further explores the key elements of Dr. Dahl's webinar.Dr. Dahl talks about geographical differences in whether farms provide cooling for dry or lactating cows. Cows get heat stressed long before humans. Some farms are concerned that using misters for cooling will add too much water to their manure handling systems. He notes a study comparing conventional misters and fans, no cooling, and smart soakers that only provide mist if a cow is present. When the total amount of water (drinking + cooling system) was evaluated, the smart soakers cooled as well as the conventional system, but used the same amount of water as the no cooling group. (7:08)During the dry period, a main impact of heat stress is a reduction in dry matter intake. However, there are dramatic shifts in immune function and effects on mammary development and redevelopment in cows who experience heat stress in the dry period. This sets the stage for lower productivity in the next lactation. In addition, there are many negative impacts on the in utero calf from heat stress. Calves from heat stressed dams are challenged from a growth standpoint, in addition to organ development challenges in the mammary gland, ovaries, and immune system. These calves are less likely to make it through their first lactation, are less productive, and pass their poor production and survival phenotype on to their offspring. (14:28)Dr. Tao talks about when during the dry period to provide cooling for cows. Spoiler alert: the entire dry period! He also notes that bred heifers should have cooling provided for the last 60 days of gestation as well. Laura asks about the impact of heat stress on neonatal calves and how it may impact their mammary development. More research is needed in this area, and you also have to wait two years to collect data from the first lactation. Dr. Dahl notes that observations from season of birth data indicate lower longevity for calves who are born to heat stressed dams. (18:26)Milk production is decreased by 8-10 pounds per day for cows stressed during the dry period, and they also produce a lower volume of colostrum. Calves from heat stressed dams also have a lower rate of passive transfer of antibodies from colostrum. The panel talks about why that might be, whether or not those gut differences persist after calfhood, and how that might be related to growth differences between heat stressed and cooled calves. (27:30)What about reproduction? It appears that heat stress during the dry period has a negative impact on reproductive function in the subsequent breeding season. Recent research has indicated that calves experiencing heat stress in utero have poor gonadal development and lower follicular reserves. In addition, placental development is also negatively affected. Dr. Tao notes that heat stress negatively impacts mammary gland involution during the dry off period. All of this leads to a decrease in cow longevity. (35:36)Dr. Dahl describes a retrospective records study using Florida and California herds to evaluate cows in their fifth through eighth lactations. In Florida, about three-quarters of those animals were born in cooler parts of the year rather than in hotter months of the year. The pattern in California was similar, though not quite as extreme. (44:02)Dr. Tao and Dr. Dahl expand on the economics of cooling cows, including return on investment and the costs of not cooling. The guests also talk about some of their research abstracts at the 2025 ADSA meetings. (48:10)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. In this deeply personal episode of the Say Yes Anyway Podcast, I open up about one of the most important and heartbreaking topics I've ever explored—human trafficking. As I record this episode from Thailand, a country known for both its beauty and its dark realities surrounding exploitation, I reflect on the journey that led me to dedicate my life to raising awareness and creating change.I share how my awakening to this issue began over 16 years ago in Seattle when I first learned about trafficking happening right in my own community. That discovery ignited a lifelong mission that has since taken me around the world—from Los Angeles to Thailand—working alongside organizations fighting for freedom and restoration. We explored:The global realities and human stories behind sex trafficking in Thailand and beyondThe emotional and psychological manipulation that keeps individuals trapped in exploitationThe power of compassion and radical love as tools for transformation and justiceMy experiences serving women on the streets of Los Angeles and what those encounters taught me about resilience and hopeThe heart behind Wholeness Journey and how it brings healing, identity, and community to survivorsWhy it's time for all of us to step up, speak up, and become changemakers in our own waysThis episode is a call to action—to see, to care, and to do something. Change starts when we say yes to awareness and allow compassion to move us toward action. Together, we can create a ripple effect of hope and healing. It would mean the world if you can share this episode with a friend who's ready to step into her zone of genius and create lasting transformation. One brave YES can change everything. If you liked it, download and share it with a friend or on social media and tag @jessdahl_. Follow along our impact work @wholenessjourney

Ét point i fire kampe.

On July 12, 1979, Chicago's Comiskey Park erupted into chaos during what was supposed to be a quirky baseball promotion. Shock radio jock Steve Dahl's “Disco Demolition Night” incentivized listeners to bring disco records to a White Socks doubleheader, where, between games Dahl promised to blow them up in center field. Instead, the event descended into a riot, forcing the team to forfeit. On the surface, the incendiary event looked like a wild publicity stunt gone wrong — but in hindsight, it was tantamount to a book burning. In retrospect, the destruction of thousands of disco records was a symbolic rejection of the social meanings the sounds held, particularly for queer communities of color. The night marked not just the literal destruction of vinyl but a cultural turning point when disco's dazzling reign collapsed under backlash. Or did it? In this episode, we explore how a stadium stunt revealed the deeper racial, sexual, and generational tensions shaping American music at the dawn of the 1980s. In episode seven, host Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares talk with Gillian Frank is a historian of gender, sexuality, religion, and politics in the twentieth-century United States at Trinity College, Dublin. He is a managing editor of NOTCHES: (re)marks on the history of sexuality and co-host of the podcast Sexing History, which explores how the past shapes contemporary debates about sex. Frank's scholarship has appeared in leading academic journals and edited volumes, and he has held research fellowships at Princeton and other institutions. His current book project examines the history of child adoption and foster care in the U.S., tracing how religion, race, and politics shaped family formation in modern America. Or did it? Nanci Dahl is back to answer some deep questions in this bonus episode of Get Real! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Wipe your slate clean of everything you *think* you know about the pet rock. You'll marble (err, marvel) over its true history! Its inventor, Gary Dahl, thought he'd created a novelty gift that was set in stone. Imagine his surprise when the pet rock's popularity began to crumble. Maybe he shouldn't have taken it for granite? Ehh?? Get it?? In this episode, Kristin also addresses the often-asked question about whether she's still friends with her former Let's Go To Court co-host. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! Nanci Dahl built her name on over 100 magazine covers, working with legends like Oscar de la Renta and La Perla, and fronting campaigns for BMW, Hilton, McDonald’s, and more. But behind the glamour, she survived heartbreak—from a lost love to multiple miscarriages—before finding Braden and welcoming their miracle daughter, Holland. Today, they’ve transformed their Little Pond Farm into a space for photoshoots, video productions, events, and unforgettable celebrations. Born from resilience and built on love, it’s proof that beauty can rise from even the hardest chapters.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this back-to-school episode, we hear from two longtime teachers in the public schools. High school history teacher Christina Dahl and JV Forrestal kindergarden teacher Lesli Tomkins talk about changes for the 2025-26 school year, the largest of which is a new "bell-to-bell" ban on cell phones at Rombout Middle School and Beacon High School. This is a huge experiment that's playing out across New York State, and Christina offers an early take on how it's going,. We also review some important curriculum changes that are picking up steam this year. A big one for elementary students is the addition of "science of reading" teaching requirements. In the high school, New York State is sunsetting the Regents Exams and shifting to a "portrait of a graduate" framework which emphasizes critical thinking, creativity and global citizenship. In addition to their teaching roles, Christina and Lesli also lead the Beacon Teachers Association - the union representing educators in the district. We spend some time talking about the role of the union and what kind of support teachers need (spoiler: wages commensurate with cost of living tops the list). Thanks so much to Christina and Lesli for taking the time out to chat during these hectic first weeks of school, to superintendant Matt Landahl for introducing me to to them, and to school board VP Meredith Heuer for guiding me on questions.
