Roald Dahl's key skill, as Colin Burrow puts it, 'was his ability to repress nastiness while keeping it visible'. Following his review of a new biography, Burrow talks to Tom Jones about Dahl's limitations, his successes, and his 'marvellous medicine' approach to fiction.Find further reading on the episode page: https://lrb.me/dahlSubscribe to Close Readings Plus before the end of the year: https://lrb.me/closereadings Hosted on Acast. In today's episode of LID Radio, we're in discussion with Jacob Dahl, the author of In Search of Time: Understanding the Nature and Experience of Time for a Better Life. We talk about his book and the ten lenses through which he looks at time in it. About Jacob Dahl Jacob Dahl is a Senior Partner Emeritus at McKinsey & Co, a board member and investor. He has an MSc in Economics from Copenhagen University, has worked as a management consultant for 26 years and has lived in Denmark, Europe, Africa and Asia with his wife and four children. Jacob has always been passionate about history, philosophy and physics. About In Search of Time We talk about time all the time; in fact, it is the most used noun in the English language. Yet, we have a very limited understanding of what time really is and find it difficult to explain it. The clock itself has become essential in our lives and having a shared idea of what time is has been critical for the evolution of our societies. However, time also comes with frustrations: we never seem to have enough of it during our busy days, we are bothered about our big life clock ticking too fast, and we are saddened by the lack of long-term considerations by decision makers. So, can we somehow maintain the good aspects of time and deal with the bad, by gaining a better perception of what time really is? This book looks at time through ten lenses in order to grasp a better understanding of it, as well as laying out the benefits of getting rid of our self-imposed bad time habits. ➡️ Grab a copy: https://lidpublishing.com/book/in-search-of-time/

Vinod and Geoff have taken some long flights in 2022 and have taken various items onboard. Our take-on items have evolved over the years. As we recorded this experience the 2022 holiday season is approaching, and we wanted to share our inflight recommendations for yourself - or perhaps as a gift idea for someone. Full disclosure - these are our own recommendations, and we are not receiving any sponsorship from any of the products mentioned. We start with headphones, earphones, headsets, and earbuds. There are various products out there but be aware that there is a difference between noise cancelling and noise reduction. You may also want to look at buying a set of audio adapters - in case an airline has a unique audio plug. And if you're travelling with a battery powered headset, don't forget to bring a spare battery. We ask what does someone use to watch onboard? Tablets, phones, e-readers - what happens if there is no screen in the back of the seat in front of you. Vinod remembers back to when WestJet removed seatback screens. How do you watch your device properly - are you going to be able to view it while eating a meal, for example? Remember as well to have a power bank for your device, since you don't know how easy it will be to find power to recharge when you arrive. Vinod always keeps a device plugged in during his flight. Have something with you, online or offline, for the flight. Vinod has a book that is permanently tucked into his luggage. Rest on a flight is key - we look at neck pillows, and Vinod shares a story of his unique Danish neck rest. Vinod shares his disgust of people who walk barefoot into the lavatory and has recommendations for in-flight footwear. He also shares his experiences of hotspot passengers returning to a Canadian winter wearing only flipflops. Shoes without laces can be very useful - either for passing through security, or since your feet swell during flight. When you arrive in your destination, do you have the proper power plug adapter? It is much easier these days than back when we needed a box of different plugs. If you're liking this episode experience, you may also enjoy Experience 026 "More from the mailbag. The baggage above you - overhead bins." It's available wherever you listen to your podcasts. We discuss baggage and bags. It may be useful for you to have a bag for the back of the seat to put your stuff in - also since seat pockets are often really unsanitary. If you have a rollerboard bag, it may be worth it to get the wheels changed with inline skate wheels. What should you wear during flight. For long haul flights, you may wish to consider some loungewear. Always bring a clean set of base layer clothes with you as carry-on, just in case there's a baggage problem, or something happens to your clothes during flight like spills. Vinod shares a dripping lime pickle story. Packing cubes are a great suggestion for people who want structure in their bags, and also for privacy in case security or customs goes through your bag. Water bottles - if you have one you might have to wait for service to fill it. Vinod always takes a sealed bottle of water from the flight. If you use a messenger bag, we recommend getting one that fits over your luggage handle. If you bring food on board, it is usually a good idea to bring something with added protein. AirTags - after the global luggage chaos of 2022, using these can help you keep track of where your bag is. Flying with children - "keep it simple stupid". Are you going to be able to walk the aisle or get in the lavatory with your child and the bag? Connecting clips and lattices - a recommendation when you need to link your bags together. News Items: cntraveller.com article "9 airlines with premium economy cabins worth splurging on" skift.com article "Boeing Getting Crushed on Trump-Era Air Force One Deal"   If you have a story about your preferred inflight essentials, upcoming trips, or other experiences that you would like to share, please email us at stories(at)seat1a.org or find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Ladies n Genminminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Blue Peter, Scouting & Online Panto Legend Peter Duncan to The Good Listening To Show!Peter Duncan is a quintessential family entertainer, a veritable prolific-pants of creativity and versatility. He is an Actor, Presenter,  Adventurer, former Chief Scout, Pantomime King & Blue Peter Alumni. My first ever Theatre job was understudying Peter in David Wood's Whirligig Theatre show, “Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish” way back when, circa 1988!A wonderfully rich and textured conversation indeed. One of the things I was intrigued to find out more about was a recent blog post in which Peter said: "Just after dying on a cross and ascending to heaven on a wet pensioner's matinee (whilst appearing in "The Mystery Plays") I sat in my car and was overwhelmed.  I felt as if I had walked through an ethereal portal where nothing was inexplicable. ‘I was a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars, I had a right to be here' I always long to feel again that deep flash of knowing calm.More about Peter: Peter Duncan is a dreamer. And a thinker. And a daredevil. His life has never, ever been dull. His parents were in show business! They took him on their travels, all year long,  from summer seasons to winter pantomimes. Peter Duncan himself made his first public appearance as a teenager on stage at the Mermaid in London, playing Jim Hawkins in "Treasure Island". Then, at 16, he joined the Olivier Company at The National. It sounds as though he has either been working or travelling every day, ever since. On TV, in film on one side of the camera or the other, or on stage, in a play or in Panto. Or on the road with family or with a documentary camera  in Russia, USA, India or China. If Blue Peter made Peter Duncan famous, he has found more anonymous popular fame with new generations of children as a Pantomime Dame. The characters Peter Duncan has created  himself include Dame Trott, Billie Eyelash and most recently, Dame Dolly Donut! The anarchic humour of the Dame disguises the more serious side of Peter Duncan, who turns to Dahl for command of language, to Jung for a different view of dreams, to Gibran for poetic inspiration, to Goethe for a guide to bolder living, to Shakespeare for a gloomy summary of human existence, to Desiderata for a graceful exit. This is a man of mystery, yet who is distracted by the physicality of football or the presence of women. Who had a spiritual experience after playing Jesus in a matinee, on a wet afternoon in a car park in the provinces. Who, in his spare time, is a dystopian conceptual artist, with a dark view of the further future - yet a bright view of today! Someone who writes a blog - on an annual basis! A former wannabe hippie - who visits his barber even less frequently and had at the time of this interview, just renewed the ceiling lining of his summerhouse, on a whim, for the first time in 25 years. There is much more to Peter Duncan than meets the eye! For a small fee, you can see a trio of his latest pantomimes online, created during and after lockdown. They and this interview provide some fascinating inner glimpses of his personal complexity. Peter Duncan certainly deserves centre stage…

*This Special Episode is Dedicated, in Loving Memory to Justin Wesley Jones, Lisa's Son My VERY Special Guest today is CHEF LISA DAHL! Dahl Restaurants began operations nearly twenty-seven years ago with one restaurant and the most straightforward notion - “When you cook with love, you feed the soul.” DRG has evolved to six restaurants in Sedona. Each one is unique, and all are next-level dining experiences. Owner and executive chef Lisa Dahl has weathered many storms in twenty-seven years, yet it is Lisa's abiding respect for the guests and their experience that endures. That cultural aspect is pervasive. The interplay of outstanding cuisine, service, architecture, art, and mother nature is unmistakable. Savvy guests take the Dahl restaurants tour because the reputation for cuisine and service is well known. Lisa Dahl's vision is to be the premier culinary group where staff feels inspired, safe, and fulfilled while, as a company, manifesting genuine hospitality measured by the highest standards of food, beverage, and service profitably and sustainably in a scalable fashion while serving and giving back to our communities. Lisa is in the process of expanding Butterfly Burger and Pisa Lisa Woodfired Pizza concepts into other markets. In addition to the restaurant business, her most significant project is strictly humanitarian - Project Soup Hope aims to stem national and global hunger in a unique and effective method. COOKBOOK AUTHOR Lisa Dahl is a prolific foodie. Along with opening six restaurants, four in the last ten years, She self-published the best-selling Elixir of Life Cookbook and sold over 20,000 copies. In 2022, Chef Dahl published A Romance With Food - Latin Inspired Cooking. It captures her exuberant Latin Fusion cooking style and is a stunning tribute to her wide-ranging inspirations from travels in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. ACCOLADES Lisa has appeared on the Travel Channel's Food Paradise and Food Network's Beat Bobby Flay championed three prestigious burger battles and is a two-time featured chef at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City. She was recently awarded Arizona's highest culinary honors two years in a row by the Arizona Restaurant Association - "Top Chef of Arizona" and "Food Pioneer." Chef Dahl is regularly featured in Forbes, FSR, and a host of other media platforms. She shares and provides insight into the real-life world of running restaurants pre and post-pandemic. Lisa is also a regular on ABC's Sonoran Living, CBS, and Fox, sharing culinary hooks for home chefs. FOOD AND FASHION It has been said Chef Lisa Dahl sees her restaurants as living, breathing organisms, not merely businesses. Guests don't step into a Dahl restaurant; they emerge into the space. And what becomes evident is the mixture of people, sounds, contours, art, and music. Prior to founding Dahl & DiLuca in 1995, Lisa was immersed in the fashion industry. The untimely death of her son Justin steered Dahl to Sedona for healing and revival. She is primarily credited for introducing fine dining and glamour to the Sedona culinary scene. On any given night, Chef Dahl transforms into restaurateur Lisa Dahl exuding style and grace as she greets guests and keeps a keen eye on operations. In THE LAST FALLEN MOON, we meet again with the protagonist Riley Oh, who has come to realize that life as the Godrealm's last fallen star is not all it's cracked up to be. Her new divine heritage doesn't even come with cool magical powers; half of her friends and family (including her parents) can't remember her; and to top it all off, the entire Gom clan is mad at her for killing the Cave Bear Goddess and stripping away their healing abilities. But when their anger boils over and a group of witches curse Riley's home, she knows it's up to her to restore magic back to her clan even if it means sneaking into the Spiritrealm. Luckily, Riley has some backup. Along with her sister, Hattie, Riley meets Dahl, a heaven-born boy with shockingly white hair and a fondness for toilets who might not be telling the whole truth about who he is. Together they'll fight vicious monsters, discover dark underwater worlds, and race to save the land of the dead from a fate that no one could have foreseen. And this time, Riley won't let anything get in her way. Because she can't shake the feeling that something terrible is coming their way and the gifted community is going to need all the powers they can get.

Send us an e-mail so we can help! thekidventurespodcast@gmail.com WHAT ARE YOU READING - ROALD DAHL Roald Dahl is one of our family's favorite authors but his material can be controversial with some families. There are themes of magic in several books and we've heard in some circles that the treatment of children is too harsh (for example, how Matilda's parents treat her.) Our son enjoys re-reading the short chapter books of George's Marvelous Medicine and Fantastic Mr. Fox! Our daughter loved reading Esio Trot and figuring out the little hidden riddle! No spoilers! If you're new to Dahl, starting with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a great introduction to the imagination and fantastical ideas in Dahl's writings! A book that we feel is overlooked is Danny The Champion of the World. This book sits on my shelf as a Father's Day gift from RaeAnna and the kids. It is a touching and humorous look at the relationship between Danny and his eccentric father. Dahl was a great writer and like many British authors of his time, included poetry within the novels. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has some great poems for recitation. RaeAnna loves reciting “Mike Teavee” to our kids! The quote we read from Matilda can be found at the end of chapter 7 in the book! THE REXAGATOR Would you like to draw a picture of what you think a Rexagator looks like? Book Vs. Movie: The Witches Roald Dahl's 1983 Children's Novel Vs. the 1990 Nicolas Roeg Cult Classic FilmThe Margos finish October's month of spooky books and movies with 1983's The Witches by Roald Dahl (a favorite of this podcast!) This is one of his last works before his death in 1990 and is based on his love for his mother, Sofie Dahl. Stephen Roxburgh edited the work, and Quentin Blake's illustrations received great praise at the time though the story was thought to be “misogynistic.” It's now known as a modern classic. The story of an unnamed boy who lives with his Norweigian grandmother after his parents are killed and learns about witches who are ALL female and eat children is---intense. He learns that witches all over the world behave differently and that his being sent to an English school might make him vulnerable to the Grand Vulnerable High Witch of All the World. The story has kids turning into mice, magic potions, wigs, pea soup, and so much more weirdness, and an ending that might be more off-putting than encouraging. Nicolas Roeg directed the 1990 film that was considered a box office disappointment because it had a different ending than the book (happier, which Dahl completely hated and should not be a surprise considering what we knew about him) but is now considered a classic. Between the 1983 novel and 1990--which did we like better? You have to listen to find out!!This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and A Ghost in Shining Armor, the novel by Therese Beharrie.ROM-COM WITH A TOUCH OF MAGIC: This Cape Town-set rom-com is the second in a duology about two South African sisters who were separated as children when one was adopted and the other went into foster care. After reuniting as adults, they learn they've each developed unique abilities. The previous book focused on the sister who can manifest her dreams. This book revolves around Gemma, who can see and communicate with ghosts. FOR FANS OF: This #OwnVoices romantic comedy is ideal for fans of authors who have found success blending romance, comedy, and more weighty real-world issues, such as Jasmine Guillory, Abby Jimenez, Helen Hoang, & Alisha Rai. Readers who enjoy authors bringing new perspectives to the world of romance, such as Talia Hibbert and Erin Sterling will also be pleased. Once haunted . . . Gemma Daniels has never been quite the “down to earth” woman her adoptive parents raised her to be. She even has a unique gift: she can see ghosts and likes helping them settle their unfinished business. But the hotter-than-hot stranger she impulsively kisses on a bet is not only a phantom; he's determined to help her. And the only way Gemma can explain his presence is to pretend they're a real-life couple. Twice shy . . . Levi Walker lived—and died—to save his sister. Now he's got a second chance at life if he assists Gemma in reuniting with her long-lost sibling . . . and then never sees Gemma again. But as he starts to enjoy her irrepressible personality, he's finding it hard to abide by any rules at all . . . Gemma is thrilled to be getting to know her sister, but it causes a family rift she may be unable to heal. On top of that, she's falling for a ghost with a dilemma. Levi must decide what loyalty—and living—is truly all about. Gemma and Levi must risk being real with each other to fix their mistakes if they are ever to claim true love.Visit her online at Therese Beharrie and on Twitter @ThereseBeharrie.In this ep the Margos discuss:The life of Roald DahlThe plot of the story versus the 1990 filmThe controversy around the movie and why it is considered a classic filmThe cast: Anjelica Huston (Ena Ernst/The Grand High Witch,) Mai Zetterling (Helga Eveshim,) Jasen Fisher (Luke Eveshim,) Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Stringer,) Brenda Blethyn Mrs. Jenkins,) Charlie Potter (Bruno) and Jane Horrocks as Miss Susan Irvine. Today on Feminine Roadmap we're talking about intuitive eating and body peace with Lisa Dahl. Lisa is an intuitive eating and body image health coach. She is on a mission to help people break the myth that they are broken or have to be in thinner bodies to be healthy or live full, happy lives. Lisa has learned through her own experience that food has no moral value and that we are neither good nor bad because of what we eat. She explains that as we understand that every body is different, has different needs and that food is just a messenger, we can begin to shift away from judgement to acceptance. In this episode she lays out her five pillars to body peace and food freedom that empower listeners to stop punishing themselves around food and physical size. She encourages listeners to challenge their inner food police, to question the words they use when speaking about themselves, and begin to build self compassion. If you find yourself caught in the pattern of seeing yourself as good or bad when it comes to the food you eat or the size you wear then join us. This episode will give you tools and strategies to come to a place of peace with your body and food.

Thanks to listener Miriam for contributing!Yes, this book was banned...for promoting witchcraft, not Dahl's anti-semitism, which we have to discuss . It's such a shame because the book - with its willingness to put children in danger and its "grim dark" ending - is still great (bonus points for Quentin Blake's illustrations). Then the film is all about Anjelica Houston's Grand High Witch, cute Jim Henson mice, Roeg's POV camerawork and great practical FX.Wanna connect with the show? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

IN THIS EPISODE: The Landlady" is a short horror story by Roald Dahl. It initially appeared in The New Yorker, on November 28, 1959. Dahl once said that he had always wanted to write a ghost story but never had been quite been able to do so. The closest he came, in his opinion, was the story I'm about to share with you… “The Landlady.” But after reading through his own story afterward, he doesn't think he really succeeded with his effort. Nonetheless, the tale won "Best Short Story Mystery" at the 1960 Edgar Awards. As seen in the Northern Hemisphere summer of 2022, many travellers have returned to travelling. However, quite often passengers check in their brains and don't bring their brain into the airport. This is why wayfinding and signage is so important. Sometimes there is common signage across a country - the black and yellow UK signage, for example. Sometimes signage is difficult to read – Vinod shares an experience from a number of years ago in Salt Lake City. Often signs are unilingual, and often signs are unclear what a passenger needs to do (for example: does the sign mean straight ahead, or go up to the next floor level?) Looking through crowds to see signage can be difficult. Understandably, the signage can define the passenger experience. Many airports have a check-in zone with a big letter to show the aisle. Vinod and Geoff share their love of the departure flipboard sign in Frankfurt. Signage details starts right on your ticketing information. And if you need to deal with ticketing, it could be in multiple locations. Moving along to pre-board screening and security, are there other scanning locations that will get you through more quickly? Lavatories and eating – sometimes the signage intent is very unclear. Vinod shares a story of finding a Japanese breakfast in Tokyo. Some airports don't announce the gate until a short period before departure, which can lead to a mass rush of passengers. At the gate itself things can go sideways with signage. Vinod shares a story of changing a gate three times in Hanoi. If you're liking this episode experience, you may also enjoy Experience 023. "Sometimes the situation just goes bad. Making the most of the experience." It's available wherever you listen to your podcasts. Sometimes signage is a simple as something like lettering. The boarding card has to also correlate with the wayfinding. A passenger gets to Customs and Immigration – are there restrictions on which citizens use which queues? And once you leave the airport, what is the signage for your transportation?   News Items: simpleflying.com article "Air France Will Cease Transportation Of Research Animals When Its Contract Expires" onemileatatime.com article "Ouch: Both Pilots Of Ethiopian Airlines 737 Fall Asleep, Miss Approach"   If you have a story about airport signage, or other experiences that you would like to share, please email us at stories(at)seat1a.org or find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
