In the episode, "Relinquishing the Label, Embracing the Voices, and Healing in an Alternative Paradigm with author Mary Clista Dahl" (S6, E8), Mary shares her story about letting go of the label, embracing an alternative paradigm, and learning to listen to the voices. Mary Clista Dahl has lived experience of “psychosis” and is well known in the national and international mental health communities for promoting hopeful recovery solutions for what is clinically described as serious mental illness, encouraging others to understand their labels as attributes. Is your makeup messing with your hormones? Could your cleaning products be impacting your fertility? And how do we make informed choices without spiraling into fear or perfectionism? In this episode of Brave & Curious, Dr. Lora Shahine invites us to ask bold questions about the everyday products we use—and the hidden chemicals within them. Joining her is activist and author Lindsay Dahl, who's spent her career fighting for consumer safety and pulling back the curtain on toxic chemicals. They talk about the science behind endocrine disruptors, the power of personal storytelling in policy change, and the importance of asking “what's really in this?”—even when the label says “natural.” Lindsay's new book: Cleaning House: The Fight to Rid Our Homes of Toxic Chemicals is full of real life examples, engaging stories, and many resources on safety and advocacy. Listeners will walk away with practical tips for reducing chemical exposure, a deeper understanding of how U.S. regulations compare globally, and an empowering reminder that you don't have to be perfect to make a difference. Sam Pay (Song by Song podcast) and Hannah Wales (missflicks.com) return to Flixwatcher to review Sam's choice The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023) is a short film based on a short story collection by Roald Dahl directed by Wes Anderson. It is the first in a four-part series of shorts adapted from Dahl's short stories collection and includes The Swan, The Rat Catcher and Poison. This is the second time Wes Anderson has adapted Roald Dahl and once again brings his trademark style to Dahl's much loved words. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar plus three more features a rotating cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, Max Engelman, and Harry Pope, Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl, the Policeman, and the Rat Man, Dev Patel as Dr. Chatterjee, John Winston, and Timber Woods, Ben Kingsley as Imdad Khan, the Dealer, and Dr. Ganderbai, Richard Ayoade as Dr. Marshall, the Great Yogi, and the Editor/Reporter and Rupert Friend as Peter Watson/Narrator and Claud. Scores for the four short films were mixed, general consensus was that The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar was the strongest of the four. With a combined runtime of less than 90 minutes, much shorter than most cinema releases, it still comes recommended with an overall score of 3.74. Geomagnetic storms have been occurring with more frequency this year, and it could be causing problems for production agriculture in unlikely areas. Ben Jarboe discusses it with Shawn Dahl, the service coordinator at the space weather prediction center. He says some of the effects these storms have on agriculture here in the US causes damage passersby may not see. For example, Dahl says that one storm last May caused a 500 million dollar loss in the corn industry alone. His goal now is to be able to predict these storms and have weather broadcasters spread the news to mitigate the losses they cause.Stu Muck says today won't be too bad with temps in the upper 80's. He cautions to get things done outside today because tomorrow everything changes. The Bureau of Land Management within The Department of the Interior is hosting its Online Corral auction featuring wild horses and donkeys. The online sale is July 14-21. One of the pick-up and adoption events is on Sept. 12-13 at the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds in Cedarburg. Jason Lutterman from the National Wild Horse and Burro Program tells Stephanie Hoff about this opportunity to provide a good home for a wild horse or donkey. Lutterman says these animals have gone on to be good workhorses, therapy companions, or show winners. Wild horses don't have any "bad habits" that previously trained horses may have. Donkeys are good guard animals for your existing herd.Buy the rumor, trade the fact. That seems to be where the commodity markets are living these days. Alex Dahl is the author of six psychological thrillers. Her third novel, Playdate, is currently streaming on Disney+ and she's published by (among others) Penguin Random House USA, Head of Zeus UK, Harper Collins Australia. Her work has been translated into 16 foreign languages and her debut novel, The Boy at the Door, was shortlisted for a CWA dagger award. She's a half Norwegian, half American author and studied Russian, German and international studies in Oslo and Moscow before pursuing an MA in creative writing at Bath Spa University – at the same time as Dr Rachel Knightley. Alex talks to Rachel about the importance of doing the writing you want – both in the responsibility of knowing you're the one who needs to make it happen for you and the self-knowledge of what it is you want your writing and your writing life to be. What are they willing to do to get it?” Alex Dahl Consider the character you're working on. What do they want? What are they prepared to do to get it? What aren't they prepared to do that can stop them from getting it? Main Exercise: “That's something I always ask myself and it's actually something that I've started to apply to real life. It's like in interactions with people, like characters. It's super enlightening to just bring it back down to what does this person actually want? What is their desired outcome, whether it's a child or a partner or just a random stranger, same as with characters: what is it that drives them in this particular interaction? And that's so useful for me in novel writing, because it really does inform so much of the interpersonal relationships and also how to structure the plot, because you can always bring it back to that and be like, okay, so I'm stuck here. But in this particular moment, what is the pressing point for this character? What do they want?” Alex Dahl Take a blank sheet of paper and choose one of these questions: What do I want for my writing? What am I doing to make it happen? What am I not doing to make it happen? If I knew it would all be okay in the end, what would I do next?

Cleaning House: The Fight to Rid Our Homes of Toxic Chemicals by Lindsay Dahl Lindsaydahl.com https://www.amazon.com/Cleaning-House-Fight-Homes-Chemicals/dp/0063375591 From the front lines of the movement for safer products, environmental health expert Lindsay Dahl takes us on her journey from skeptic to activist, exposing the secret forces that keep toxic chemicals in our homes, bodies, and environment—showing us how to fight back and keep our families safe. In Cleaning House, Lindsay Dahl shows how seemingly innocuous items—everything from toys to common beauty and cleaning products—can include toxic chemicals, thanks to a consistent failure of regulation in the United States. The scientific research linking toxic chemicals in products to rising rates of cancer and reproductive harms is as strong as the science that led to banning lead from gasoline, PBCs, and DDT. But with varying degrees of protective guardrails in place for the everyday items, consumers are tasked with playing toxic-chemical detective and those unable to afford safer products are left hanging in the balance. Through vivid storytelling and robust scientific evidence, Dahl makes a compelling case that a safer world will only arrive through systemic change. We must turn off the tap of toxic chemicals before they make their way into our homes and bodies—and here she shows you how. Drawing on Dahl's extensive experience as a lobbyist, product formulator, and a parent, she unravels the shocking web of political and cultural factors that landed us here and are key to solving this massive public health crisis. Dahl takes readers behind the scenes as a young but determined lobbyist fighting powerful chemical industry players, which she discovered are replicating Big Tobacco's disinformation playbook by downplaying the harms of the toxic chemicals they continue to profit from. And she introduces readers to the brilliant scientists doing ground-breaking research, legislators passing life-saving laws, forward-thinking business leaders, communities facing the highest level of exposure to toxic chemical pollution, and parents from all political stripes who have joined the fight for a safer world. Told through a compelling David and Goliath narrative, Cleaning House dares to take a pragmatic and science-based approach to the concept of clean living, in a time where the wellness movement is threatened by partisan politics and misinformation. It is an essential read for anyone who wants a safer home and a safer future for our children. About the author Lindsay Dahl is a nationally awarded environmental health and consumer safety expert. Over the last twenty years Dahl has helped pass over thirty state and federal laws that remove toxic chemicals from consumer products and our environment. Her activism and writing has been featured in the New York Times, Fast Company, and Vogue, among other publications. Dahl has worked across leadership positions for environmental health nonprofits including Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, and for leading consumer brands including: Ritual and Beautycounter. She sits on the board of directors for the nonprofits Toxic-Free Future and the Chamber of Mothers.
What if the most toxic thing in your home isn't a chemical—but a mindset? Clean living advocate and first-time author Lindsay Dahl returns to unpack the nuanced middle ground of wellness, environmental health, and personal agency. Together, we explore the emotional toll of trying to “do it all right,” the dangers of black-and-white thinking in the age of social media, and why real change takes both individual action and systemic accountability. We talk spatulas and seed oils, fast fashion and flame retardants, fear and freedom—and why being a pragmatist in today's digital landscape is both radical and necessary. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by wellness culture or simply want to think more critically about what's in your home and how it gets there, this conversation offers clarity, compassion, and a call to thoughtful action. 0:00 | Framing the Problem with Balance 2:20 | Education, Policy, and the Role of Media 5:40 | Health vs. Science: A Cultural Disconnect 8:06 | Control, Consumerism, and Systemic Change 11:25 | Fast Fashion as a Microcosm 14:12 | Inside “Cleaning House”: Book Preview 18:41 | The Cost of Speaking Up 23:38 | Reclaiming Community and Dialogue 26:25 | Closing and Call to Action Find Lindsay: lindsaydahl.com instagram.com/lindsay_dahl linkedin.com/in/lindsay-dahl-3617076 Pre-order Lindsay's book "Cleaning House: The Fight to Rid Our Homes of Toxic Chemicals" almost anywhere books are sold, releases 8/5/25 Find Stacy: realeverything.com instagram.com/realstacytoth missionmakersart.com Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 097: Giant by Mark Rosenblatt Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Mark Rosenblatt Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. It is 1983, and the famous children's author Roald Dahl's life is in some turmoil. He has just divorced his wife of 30 years, and his new fiancée has just moved into the family home and has initiated disruptive renovations to the house, disturbing his very particular writing routines. Dahl also now finds himself the target of publlic outrage for the antisemitism contained in his recent published criticism of Israel's violent attack on Lebanon. Representatives from his British and American publishers have arrived to try to persuade Dahl to issue some conciliatory response, but Dahl is characteristically disinclined to retreat from his deeply-felt opinions. This is the premise for Mark Rosenblatt's award-winning first play Giant, which is currently earning five-star reviews in London's West End. I am delighted to be joined by the play's author, Mark Rosenblatt, to explore his electrifying play.

A counterpart to our earlier episode on Bible to Doctrine (and Back Again), this one has us discussing Dad's forthcoming book, which is a theology of theology and an exegesis of exegesis! In particular we discuss the difference between starting with the incarnation vs. starting with the resurrection in christology, and all the downstream consequences of the respective decisions. Dahl once said that he had always wanted to write a ghost story but never had been quite been able to do so. The closest he came, in his opinion, was the story I'm about to share with you… “The Landlady.” But after reading through his own story afterward, he doesn't think he really succeeded with his effort. Nonetheless, the tale won "Best Short Story Mystery" at the 1960 Edgar Awards.
