Miss Honey stans, grab your chocolate cake—our Book Club Month wraps with Danny DeVito's charmingly chaotic Matilda film review. In Season 8, Episode 20 of the So Many Sequels podcast, Josh and David dig into Roald Dahl's pint‑sized heroine, telekinetic justice, and the 90s VHS afterlife that turned a box‑office underdog into a cult classic. We debate Trunchbull nightmare fuel, gush over Mara Wilson's book‑devouring genius, and crown the weirdest narrator choice in movie history (sorry, Danny). We also tackle banned‑book controversies, the power of found family, and why Miss Honey would make a killer narrator. Plus insider trivia on chocolate‑cake chaos, box‑office flops bigger than a newt, and our own nostalgic tales of conquering multiplication like Matilda. On this week’s episode we chat with Sari González and Becka Koritz – co-founders of Radical Learning – about unschooling and alternative models of education. Sari and Becka are mums to neurodivergent unschoolers, youth rights advocates, and agile learning facilitators who challenge conventional education and parenting. Through their business, Radical Learning, and their podcast, Radical Learning Talks, they support parents and educators in unlearning control-based approaches to education and embracing trust, consent, and youth agency - especially when supporting neurodivergent kids. On this episode we cover: How Becka and Sari think about neurodivergence. Becka and Sari’s paths to alternative education. What’s the difference between homeschooling and unschooling? Concepts in unschooling, including de-schooling, consent-based learning, and understanding how power manifests in mainstream ideas of teaching and learning. How can we teach our kids if we aren’t teachers? Navigating our inner ‘Mrs. Trunchbull’ and the internal work of de-schooling. Neurodivergence and learning; honouring our unique talents and skills. Unpacking the concept of ‘resilience’. The Shift Retreat from Radical Learning Sari and Becka are coming to us from Mexico, so listeners may occasionally hear the sounds of nature in the background! People are at the core of everything we do at HR, but let's face it people—can be DIFFICULT. Not because they have difficult personalities, but because no two people you meet are the same. Eventually, the things that make us different can create problems if we're not aware of how to exist across differences. A lot of the conflict at work can simply be between people who are just different. That complexity is exactly what we're unpacking today with Jennifer Laurie. In this episode, we're exploring how the things that make us all different can sometimes lead to workplace conflicts, and what HR can do to help everyone not just coexist but truly thrive together. We're talking about fostering inclusive, equitable environments and how HR can bridge gaps and manage conflicts when personalities and perspectives clash. From discussing how to maintain strong relationships at work to handling power imbalances and supporting marginalized employees, we've got a lot to cover. Jennifer shares her insights on why recognizing differences is crucial and offers practical advice for HR professionals navigating the evolving landscape of workplace diversity. 00:01:45 - The Key to Maintaining Strong Relationships at Work 00:04:08 - What Does Existing Across Differences Mean? 00:07:25 - Why Recognizing Differences is So Important Today 00:10:10 - How Does HR Help Employees Exist Across Their Differences? 00:12:50 - How to Learn Conflict Management, Even Without Resources 00:16:35 - How HR Can Address Power Imbalances Across Differences 00:20:00 - Supporting Employees Who Feel Marginalized 00:25:25 - Bridging the Gap Between Employees With Different Worldviews 00:29:42 - Common Obstacles With Building an Inclusive Environment 00:34:08 - Advice for HR Professionals New to Dealing With Diversity 00:37:42 - How Diversity is Evolving With the Addition of Global Employees 00:40:25 - What Initiatives Will Help HR With Diversity in the Coming Years? We wrap up Family Movie Month with what can best be described as “Carrie” for kids. (With a surprising scoop of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and an important connection to “Scream 2”!) Despite its spooky undertones (and Roald Dahl roots), “Matilda” is also an enthralling coming of age story featuring small legend Mara Wilson, Embeth Davidtz's Icon to the Introverted, Miss Honey, TV royalty Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Best Supporting Jean Speegel Howard and Pam Ferris tearing the scenery from limb to limb as Trunchbull. Put away your pigtails, put down the shot putt and get on out of the chokey, we've got another world class episode of BYOB for you.To begin with... let's call a spade a spade. What with it being so sunny in the UK Ben and Jack have been woefully lazy and not gone to the cinema this week. Let's add a bit of context there too though, there's arguably not much new to go and see. Don't panic - we've got a big review of TRAP coming up this weekend which we're both very excited for. And having said all of that - with there being a little bit of a quiet period at the cinema, Ben has finally managed to start working his way down Jack's recommended list. And so... This week the lads take a big deep dive into the world of 'Dark Matter'. If you haven't seen it - it's wonderful and you should run on head first into apple tv to watch it.We're also joined by a very special guest Niamh Shakleton - who brings a blockbuster from her childhood with her this week. And it's a belter. We're going Danny Devito Directorial masterclass, a Mara Wilson Classic and an unbelievable turn from Pam Ferris as the wonderful Agatha Trunchbull.Up for discussion this week - is this film actually a lot more dark than anyone realised? Are the grown ups just making it up as they go along? We pick our favourite Trunchbull insult from the following list:‘Are you a pig Amanda?... your mummy is a twit''shes a real wart… a carbuncle, a blister, a blistering festering pusstule a malignant ooze''You squirming worm of vomit''The demented drooling slime breathed little lilipution who owns this disgusting ribbon will never see the light of day again'We get stuck into Bruce Bogtrotters Man v Food style cake eating challenge and somehow get onto Gillian Mckeith and you are what you eat. Ahh the 90's. More great stuff for you to come next week - make sure you listen to the end to hear what's coming up! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
'Matilda' is actually Latin for "never fucking ends". This week Raven and Campbell eat their drink while discussing intellectual property theft and incredibly talented children in the 2022 musical film, Matilda the Musical. Where to watch: Netflix Ms. Trunchbull's Hammered Throw: - chocolate cake* - 1 cup vodka - 1 cup cold whole milk - 1 (3.8 oz) package of chocolate pudding mix - 1 (8 oz) container of frozen whipped topping, thawed Combine vodka, milk, and pudding mix in a large bowl and whisk till smooth. Fold in whipped topping until it is smooth. Highly recommend dividing the mixture up into smaller containers/bowls to set in the freezer for a couple of hours. The vodka is potent in this recipe so feel free to cut down and use more milk (e.g. 0.5 cup vodka, 1.5 cups milk). Alternate a layer of cake then pudding in a pint glass until full. Spoons are recommended. *Store bought cake is fine but recommend no icing as the pudding will be sweet enough. If baking the cake yourself, add some baileys to the wet ingredients for flavor. This is the eighth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. We're back with the second half of Moominpappa's memoirs, in which our brave hero becomes the subject of a country run by an Autocrat, starts a colony and meets his wife. Moomintroll has some very sensible notes for his Pappa in this half of the book, Sniff has some very good questions, but alas, we will never know why Moominmamma was in the sea. Our question for Snufkin this week comes from Helen Zaltzman. Our Spirits of the Moomins are Edward Carey's The Swallowed Man and Alice Tarbuck's A Spell in the Wild. Nina's other podcast, Even the Trunchbull, is our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat.

Katie and Bridget and SPECIAL GUEST THEIR SISTER MARY(!) all throw food at the Trunchbull as they re-watch the movie: Matilda! Fun fact - our sister Mary is actually Matilda; she just hasn't admitted to having mind powers yet! Come along as we meet Matilda, a little girl who loves her some reading, but unfortunately has to do so while the TV is blasting in her living room by her family, the Wormwoods. Matilda gets to go to a new school where she meets her new teacher Miss Honey (aka our dog Honey - sans underbite) but that also means she unfortunately gets to meet the Trunchbull, a lady who should have just stuck with being in the Olympics or something... Matilda will use all her trauma to develop psychic powers which she uses to get back at all the mean adults in her life! Will Matilda get to find a new loving home by the end? Uh do we love Danny DeVito's work or what!? Released in 1996, it was based off the Roald Dahl book of the same name and directed by our NJ hero Danny DeVito!
Let's talk about the fiction vs reality of Matilda's MISS HONEY! She has inspired a generation of teachers. For so many she was actually the reason, the catalyst, the inspiration to get into the job of teaching. She was the saving grace to the kids she taught. She was generous, she was compassionate, she protected her students and their wellbeing from the incredibly punitive and nasty principal Ms Trunchbull, who used behaviour management strategies that were physically and psychologically abusive to the students at Crunchem Hall Primary School. However, her pedagogy wasn't on point, because it takes a hell of a lot more than just a smile and taking interest to have a class that is engaged, happy and ‘well-behaved'. Challenging classroom behaviour is complex and nuanced, and dealing with it, addressing it, resolving it, reducing it, mitigating it, is also complex and nuanced. In this episode, I discuss the ‘Miss Honey Trap' that leads teachers to believe that relationships are the only classroom management strategy needed, and go over my non-exhaustive list of things that actually go into classroom management on top of the relationships and your values around caring for each child:Classroom environment Culture settingPlanning and preparationExpectationsNon verbalsRoutinesStrategies to de-escalate behaviour - low and high levelCoregulation / self regulationRelationships with parentsFollowing up on behaviourUnderstanding behaviour itselfFor more information on Approachable vs Credible - Michael Grindrs ENVoY non-verbal language listen to episode 8 - Low Level Behaviours, Big Level Frustrations!

What if students can train intensively in a safer and more equitable space? That's where Michael Minarik of IAMT comes in. What's in this episode? Treating yourself after auditions or small wins Rejection is not about your soul Finding joy from within Not being debt after college Why the current model for the BFA Showcase is archaic The ability to choose in the industry Audition accessibility Becoming someone's favorite Michael Minarik is the director, acting head and cofounder of the institute for American Musical theatre located in Washington Heights, NYC – where alum is performing on Broadway, National Tours, regional theaters, film tv, cruise ships and other various performance venues. A few years ago some Dr Seuss books were outright discontinued because of supposedly ‘insensitive' imagery. But before we can be enraged it is critical to take an objective look at what's happening here. The same people who get upset about professional activists are the same people who find it their duty to be offended almost daily in the name of Christ. The same people upset over book rewrites hold tight to the most edited book in history, the Bible. Although these examples cannot be entirely conflated they are important to recognize. When we talk about censorship - banning, burning, or rewriting - there is some additional context. In ancient Rome officials were elected every five years to audit, investigate and offer needed solutions to the proper function of government. These censors derive their name from the original meaning of the word censor - to scrutinize or revise. The practice was continued into the late 18th-century with States like Pennsylvania which elected censors every seven years. In truly representative Republican government with limited democracy and guarantees to the preservation of unalienable rights, people reserve the censorial power. That power is for government, though, not culture. Censors today are called ‘sensitivity readers'. Whereas Dr Seuss got the full banned treatment, Roald Dahl books are being targeted for rewrite because of ‘insensitive' words. Words like ‘fat' for Augustus Gloop and ‘Oompa Loompa' in Dahl's ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' are being replaced with ‘enormous' and ‘small men'. ‘Cloud Men' in his ‘James and the Giant Peach' are now ‘Cloud People' and Miss Spider's head is no longer ‘black', while the ‘lovely pink' skin of the Earthworm is now ‘lovely smooth' skin. Mrs. Trunchbull's face is no longer ‘great horsey' in ‘Matilda', it's just a ‘face'. In Dahl's 1983 book 'The Witches', a sentence has even been aded to suggest that witches wear wigs for many reasons and not just because they may be bald. It reads: ‘There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.' In 2018 the British Royal Mint rejected a proposal to mark the 100th anniversary of Dahl's birth with a commemorative coin. The idea was rejected on the grounds that he was “associated with anti-Semitism and not regarded as an author of the highest reputation.” What is association but conviction in the court of manipulated public opinion? Mobs demanding elusive and arbitrary justice. Karl Marx was a known racist and anti-semite but who is campaigning to ban his destructive works? This is all despite the fact that Dahl's books are meant to teach kids valuable lessons like not be a glutton and standing up for yourself. Since Roald Dahl died in 1990 he is, of course, unable to stand up for his own work and so Puffin, the publisher, hired sensitivity readers to beta-test the rewrites. Due to public backlash, Puffin decided to offer the new version and classic version. Penguin announced they would published the classic version. One may wonder if this is just a sales tactic. Other book series like Harry Potter stand strong despite the author, J.K. Rowling becoming victim to a mob which says they are able to separate art from the artist in her case - they must really enjoy their childhood heroes and not understand hypocrisy. Those calling for a banning of Potter are at least consistent while the rest hold an insane double standard. Imagine these standards being applied to history, science, genetics, math, etc. Perhaps they already have been. If books aren't banned outright they are partly censored and rewritten. Meanwhile top pop songs, social media, and modern children's books are filled with sex, porn, perversity, obscenity, hatred for parents, etc.Language itself is being reduced with every abbreviation, hashtag, and grunt that gets the average person though a conversation. This is what Eric Blaire called Newspeak while “Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” As he famously wrote in 1984: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”Any society driven by feelings and emotion rather than facts and common sense - driven by animal reactions rather than divine guidance - is one with no guidance; it is one prone to destruction. This is a system of governance based on ‘war', as in a war on ‘xyz'. Greg from Pardon My American joins us to discuss: (https://www.pardonmyamerican.com)

Nicole & Brennan review the musical reeboot of the beloved 90s classic Matilda (and book by Roald Dahl)
We're taking the bull by the pigtails in this one (the Trunchbull that is). Bogart Avila (@bogartavila) has us watch the great spooker-classic Matilda. We of course all agreed that Matilda uses telekinesis and her powers are science rather than magic. Of course director Danny DeVito (Jess Uhler (@jessicauhler)) also shows up and defends his movie from the critics. To mark ten years since stalking became a specific crime in England and Wales, we speak to crime reporter and presenter Isla Traquair. In her day job Isla is used to confronting murderers and travelling to dangerous places but it was in a quiet village in Wiltshire where her stalking ordeal took place. In August this year Isla's neighbour, Jonathan Barrett, was found guilty of stalking. This followed what Isla calls a 7 month period of terror from March to September 2021. 99% of all boxers are men and it remains a male dominated sport in all areas. We speak to Susannah Schofield OBE who hopes to harness the growing appetite for women's sport with the recent successes of women's football and rugby by convincing the BBC to show women's boxing. New research shows the clitoris actually has over 10,000 nerve endings. 20% more than the previously suggested amount from studies on cows in the 1970s. Does this increase in number matter? We ask science journalist Rachel E Gross and Dr Brooke Vandermolen, an NHS Obstetrics and Gynaecology Registrar. Why is it that we so often struggle or fail in long term relationships? We're talking instead about unremarkable everyday behaviours that help to end a marriage. We speak to couples therapist, Joanna Harrison and relationship coach, Matthew Fray. The actor Andrea Riseborough tells us about playing Mrs Wormwood in the new Matilda the Musical film. The film is an adaptation of Tim Minchin's hit West End musical of the same name. It stars Emma Thompson as Mrs Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey and Stephen Graham as Mr Wormwood. She talks about playing one of Roald Dahl's most famous characters and her life off camera, meeting Patti Smith for the first time. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Surya Elango Editor: Emma Pearce

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/terugspoelen/message
The actor Andrea Riseborough has taken on roles ranging from Margaret Thatcher to Stalin's daughter. But now she's playing someone quite different: Mrs Wormwood in the new Matilda the Musical film, which will be released in cinemas on Friday 25th November. The film is an adaptation of Tim Minchin's hit West End musical of the same name, and stars Emma Thompson as Mrs Trunchbull and Stephen Graham as Mr Wormwood. Andrea joins Emma Barnett to discuss what it's like capturing the camp, comedy, and darkness of one of Roald Dahl's most famous and reviled characters. As Jennifer Aniston speaks publicly for the first time about her fertility struggles and says she wishes someone had told her to “Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favour”, Emma talks to one woman who's put her future on ice, and a lecturer in Women's Health from UCL who's warning against women viewing egg freezing as a guaranteed insurance policy. In the run up to the men's football World Cup 2022 being held in Qatar, it was the England women's footballers who were the most outspoken about staging the tournament in a country which outlaws being gay and where women's rights are severely curtailed. On Woman's Hour yesterday we asked if there was any point in further protests as fans now clamour to enjoy the game – today we ask Rothna Begum, Senior Women's Rights Researcher at Human Rights Watch, how the tournament is affecting women in Qatar. Tampax has been causing quite a stir on social media after a Tweet they posted went viral. Putting its own spin on the popular 'You are in their DMs' memes about men approaching women flirtatiously on social media, the tampon company explicitly referenced how its products are used by women in a tweet on Monday, writing, 'You're in their DMs. We're in them. We are not the same'. The post has racked up more than 360,000 likes and 73,600 retweets proving that there were plenty of fans, but critics accused the brand of going too far and calling people to #BoycottTampax. Emma speaks to Chella Quint, the founder of Period Positive, a menstruation education advisor, comic and author of the books 'Be Period Positive' and 'Own Your Period'.

This month on Even the Trunchbull, we have a listener recommendation! Namely, Momo by Michael Ende (well known as the author of The Never Ending Story) as our chapter book, on a theme of ‘Time' – so that's what we've gone with! Momo is part celebration of community and part prescient cautionary tale about the dangers of the busy modern world. Momo and a magic tortoise called Cassiopeia must rescue the city from the faceless men in grey, who are determined to steal everyone's time. That's paired with picture book Clocks and More Clocks by Pat Hutchins (well known beloved picture book writer and one time narrator of Rosie and Jim). This one is both educational and wonderfully daft – essentially a gorgeously structured joke about the passage of time, in which one gentlemen fills his house with rather a lot of clocks. This week Gary and Rebecca are joined by fellow creative Emma Ruse to discuss the wonderful Matilda. SynopsisThis film adaptation of a Roald Dahl work tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father (Danny DeVito) and mother (Rhea Perlman). Worse, Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), the evil principal at Matilda's school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.Links In Conversation TWITTER - @emmaruseframework theatre - https://www.frameworktheatre.com/Creative RecommendationsSaid The Dove To The Olive Tree (A Love Letter To Palestine)Interabang Productionshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nF-Pk34HNq8Shadow Over Findusmouthfinger puppet movie. - 48 Puppet Film Challengehttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BnnZnvLgQukKick The Door The Brave https://www.kickthedoor.co.uk/the-brave

'I'm right and you're wrong, I'm big and you're small, and there's nothing you can do about it!' Danny DeVito's Matilda has been one of our most requested films to discuss from the very beginning of the pod, and we finally got round to it (and we think it's one of our best episodes!). We discuss the dichotomy between Agatha Trunchbull and Miss Honey, two extremes of teaching we think are manifest in all practitioners. This leads to us talking about teachers as authority figures, the complexity of school uniform policies, and our own Trunchbull moments (sorry to all fans of whimsical cat ears).
Hosts Hannah brown (@hannahabrown) and Tyler Meredith (@tylermckmeredith) recap their weeks which include a Wisconsin staycay trip to HOUSE ON THE ROCK and a luxurious stay at Holiday Inn Express, which truly revived Tyler's soul. Also we need Bethenny Frankel's Trunchbull from Matilda energy to revive RHONY. ALSO also, the Louvre is overrated--we said WHAT WE SAID. This episode however, truly made our high school theatre kid hearts sing and we go on a full spring down theatre memory lane. The Constance/St. Judes production is just a fever dream of opulence: we get quotes from Shakespeare, Uta Hagen, Edith Wharton, straight off the runway couture costuming and terrible British dialects. We would also like to take the time to welcome the 'TOASTER OVEN' (Rachel Carr) and the 'DOILY' (mysterious Elle) to our menagerie of inanimate character objects/nicknames--they've entered the chat. And what in the twisted Upper East Side version of Haedes is going to happen with B and Carter Baizen?! TBD Y'all-- XOXO H & T.

Hello Disney Friends! Welcome to our 5th DisNOT episode! We chose a 90s classic, “Matilda” from 1996. Based on the classic children's novel by Roald Dahl (Yeah, we don't know how to pronounce that either) and directed by the infamous Danny Devito, this movie could not be any better. We LOVE the suspense of disbelief one must have for this movie. You truly must have the imagination of a child and look through a child's eyes to believe this fantasy. In Part 1, you can hear Avery and Joel argue about the songs in this movie(hint: Avery was right). Joel almost ruins this film with an awkward, dramatic pause. Just listen...you'll hear it. After watching this movie as adults, we couldn't stop raving about it. Everything was done perfectly. Perfect casting. Perfect acting. Perfect dramatization. Perfect setting. We love everything about this movie! I'm sure you can guess our ratings at the end ;) We also sprinkle some fun facts about how they created the “Trunchbull” look and how they got the children to actually seem scared of her. If you haven't watched this movie in awhile, now is the time to do it. So please go watch Matilda, then come listen to our podcast! Enjoy!

In which the Mister and the Monsters join me in reviewing MATILDA (1996), in spectacular DVD! Based on a children's book by Roald Dahl, the film tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a budding genius who unfortunately has the misfortune of being the daughter to the worst parents ever. Like most children, Matilda just pines for love and affection, things that her own parents (played by Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito, the later who also directs and narrates the tale of Matilda's woes) are incapable of giving her but when things go south for the Wormwoods, will they ultimately do right by Matilda and let her have her happily-ever-after? You'll have to watch! Matilda is played brilliantly by Mara Wilson and the stellar cast is rounded out with Pam Ferris as the Trunchbull and Embeth Davidtz as Miss Honey. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support

Miss Honey invented lesbianism and that's that. My Matilda (1996) Manifesto has finally arrived. Ms Trunchbull is a dyketastic villain, Matilda is bisexual, Mrs Wormwood said Bimbo rights AND MORE. Please note: I had my mic on the wrong setting the for the second half of the recording and will be blaming this on Mercury retrograde. Sorry Emily sounds like she's in a Pringle tube this was not my intention. Trigger & content Warnings: Matilda (first half): fatphobia, transphobia, homophobia, stereotypes about butch lesbians and queer women, sexism, abusive families, child abuse. Agenda (second half): mentions of Chris Brown and Woody Allen (in the context of hating them to their core). Racism and “diversity”. This episode, Sara, Will, and Flo close out our adventures with Matilda by traveling "Home At Last," this episodes theme. This episode, the geeky gang not only discuss book-specific topics, such as Matilda's powers (and their disappearance), Ms. Trunchbull's downfall and Ms. Honey's rise, and Matilda's new home in the Re(a)d House, but also off-page topics, like which Hogwarts House Matilda would be slated into, some of the differences between the book and the movie, and real-life experiences in school the gang had growing up!We may have reached the end of Matilda, but that just means, now more than ever, it's time to raise those wands up and keep those pages turning!
"Listen you little wiseacre. I'm smart; you're dumb. I'm big; you're little. I'm right; you're wrong. And there's nothing you can do about it." - Parents to their kids during the 2020 quarantine. Actually, that's a Danny DeVito rant from "Matilda," a charming movie adaptation of the Roald Dahl children's book. Most of the adults in this movie are just awful to poor little Matilda, an adorable six-year-old played by the quintessential adorable 90s kid, Mara Wilson ("Mrs. Doubtfire," the "Miracle on 34th Street" remake). The adults should probably stop messing with her though, because Matilda has Jean Gray-level telekinesis. She can move classroom objects with her mind! Oooooh, ahhh! That's how it always starts. But then later there's running and.. and.. screaming... Danny DeVito directed the movie and also plays Matilda's absentee dad, who is only half as deplorable as Frank Reynolds (still bad), though he and mom Rhea Pearlman are saints compared to Principal Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Trunchbull throws mouthy kids into a pokey torture chamber and throws little girls across campus by the pigtails. It'd all be deeply disturbing if not for that distinct Dahl whimsy (and some cartoonish stylistic choices). Old Millennials Remember Matilda podcast Angela and Tyler discuss their history with "Matilda" and all the reasons why the film has endured over the years. What makes the story so appealing to kids? Are they aware of Miss Honey's agonizingly tragic backstory? And can impatient and exasperated parents learn a few lessons about how not to treat young children? Or are we all, at some level, as awful as the Wormwood parents? Hey, in our defense, we think we'd at least be able to tell the difference between cops and boat salesmen. Also, remember that kid who dances with Drew Barrymore in "The Wedding Singer?" He gets to eat a giant cake in this movie. That kid rules. Book Vs Movie Matilda The Classic Book from Roald Dahl Vs the 1996 Film Adaptation The Margos tackle one of the most beloved children’s books of all time--Matilda by Roald Dahl. We have had so many requests over the years for this book & movie and it has certainly lived up to the hype! Dahl is a fascinating subject all on his own. Born in Wales to Norwegian immigrant parents, the 6’6” Dahl was larger than life in every imaginable way. A veteran of the Royal Air Force (RAF,) Dahl crash-landed his Gladiator in Marsa Matruh, Egypt, in 1940 and managed to crawl to safety before it blew up. He survived a skull fracture and totally smashed his nose and was blinded temporarily. He recovered and eventually worked for the English Embassy in Washington D.C. and went to cocktail parties where he as known as a charmer & dancer. Dahl worked in Intelligence during WW2 and was friends with writers C.S. Forester and Ian Fleming. He became a well-known adult & children’s author with several titles being viewed as masterpieces including Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The BFG, and James & the Giant Peach. 1998’s Matilda was one of Dahl’s last book and it had been included in multiple lists as one of the best children’s books of all time. The story of the brilliant but unappreciated by her parents Matilda Wormwood is full of humor and pathos as she learns to use her psychic powers for the forces of good. Characters like Miss Honey, Miss Trunchbull, and Lavender are unforgettable and Danny DeVito’s film makes some interesting choices in the 1996 adaptation. So between the book and the movie, which did we like better? Click on the link below to find out! In this ep the Margos discuss: The incredible life of Roald Dahl The main plot of Matilda Trivia about the shooting of the film The cast includes Mara Wilson (Matilda,) Danny DeVito (Mr. Wormwood,) Rhea Perlman (Mrs. Wormwood,) Embeth Davidtz (Miss Honey,) Pam Ferris (Trunchbull,) Kiami Davael (Lavender,) Paul Reubens (FBI Agent) and Tracey Walter (FBI Agent.) Our next instalment of SYNarios takes us to the stars, as Marcy invites Tom, Connor and Viv in a spaceship that's bound towards a new world (if you're wondering what it's name is, it's [REDACTED]). On the spaceship, introverted but levelheaded owl scientist Telos (played by Tom) and TV talk show host and Broadway wannabe Paulie Peacock (played by Viv), must survive a one-way trip to a new world, with the cruel and evil Ms. Trunchbull knockoff Fania (played by Connor). Will everyone make it alive to the new world? Are there stowaways hiding under our crews' noses/beaks? Is there a couch with real Italian leather stuck somewhere on the spaceship? Find out right now in this exciting new (and third) instalment of SYNarios! SYNarios is a Dungeons and Dragons, Choose Your Own Adventure blend of fun storytelling and roleplaying mayhem, without all the complicated mechanics tabletop role playing games like D and D usually have. Each SYNario has a different scenario, and different characters, but choices within each SYNario are at the mercy of probability (aka a 20 sided D20 die). Expect lots of fun, and whimsical chaos, as each player improv their way through each SYNario, bouncing off each other, the Game Master (GM), and the scenario itself! Originally broadcast on Sunday 8th December. Produced and edited by Marcy Di Bartolomeo

It's that time again, naughty children: educational budget cut season! Under the Boris Johnson government, there's just not enough money in Britain for silly things like "schools" and "teachers" and "preparing the next generation to avert, or at least survive, the upcoming post-capitalist apocalypse." We're trying to turn a profit here, after all! Surely you wouldn't want to impinge upon our freedom! (Incidentally, there are several similar analogies to the current political climate sprinkled throughout this episode -- see if you can catch them all!) ...although it has to be said, there is one good thing to come out of this horrible public education budget. Two particular schools are up for inspection by the superintendent, and due to cost constraints, whichever school is deemed the lesser will see its headmistress sacked for incompetence. Why is this a good thing, you ask? Well, one of the headmistresses is Agatha Trunchbull, the massive Olympian and notorious child-thrower who was recently chased out of Crunchem Hall (and indeed, her home town) by the telekinetic five-year-old Matilda Wormwood. And the other is Dolores Umbridge, lately of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, from which she was removed after her gross abuses of power caused several prominent students, led by Harry Potter, to revolt against her. Both of them are absolutely horrible people with no business teaching children of any age or level of magical ability, but alas, the one that can best keep their students under control during the inspection will (somehow) keep her job at her new school. Still, one out of two ain't bad, as they say in the fictional 1980s England that exists only in my mind. Two former Smash Fiction champions, Natasha Winters and Marissa Bond, return to help us decide which evil teacher is better at tormenting children into temporary subservience, because we're all terrible and everybody here deserves to lose. The jokes are still funny, though! Promise!

It's colourful, quotable and it inspired a generation of children to spend countless hours fruitlessly staring at glasses of water... this week on Beyond The Box Set, we continue our actors-turned-directors mini-season with a look back at Danny DeVito's utterly delightful adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda. Already an emerging child star thanks to roles in classic movies like Mrs Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street, Mara Wilson turned in the defining role of her career as the book-loving heroine Matilda Wormwood. Character actress Pam Ferris, meanwhile, chewed scenery with abandon as the monstrous Ms Trunchbull, proving that the best movie villains should always be characters we secretly sort of root for. In this week's episode - the latest edition in our ongoing series on movies by actors-turned-directors - we look back at the delicate balance of darkness and whimsy that makes Matilda one of the all time great films for children, and attempt to brainstorm what a sequel might look like over twenty years later... ----- Beyond The Box Set is the hit British movie podcast in which two movie-loving idiots take a classic standalone movie each week, and attempt to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. We all know the work of Roald DahlHe gave the world characters like Willy Wonka and, my personal favorite, Matilda. But from the same mind came child killing witches and, more notoriously, Trunchbull. His writings are often accompanied with sadness suffering, and often paint women in an unflattering light, aside from Miss Honey.Let's take a peek beyond the pages of another famous children's author, and find out why his own wife dubbed him Rolled the Rotten, a more than well deserved nickname.Visit us online at: Rotten to the CoreSupport the show at http://Patreon.com/itsrottentothecoreAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
