Matilda the Musical was a movie musical adaptation of the musical of the same name, which itself was a musical adaptation of children's book author Roald Dahl's famous story. It featured a cast of Alisha Weir, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, and Emma Thompson, and like the original musical it was adapted from featured a soundtrack of songs by British-Australian comedian Tim Minchin. It followed a story similar to the original novel, following the adventures of the titular Matilda, a girl much smarter than her peers, as she attempts to navigate the English school system and her uncaring parents. On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott herald the return of all-star David Allen Prescott to the podcast to talk about their viewing of Matilda the Musical. It's a hard knock life, for- Oh wait. We love pattern-seeking here on the Back Row Seating podcast, so when a film we've previously watched gets a musical adaptation adapted into film, it's time to jump at the chance! So how will this compare to the original film? The portrayal of child neglect has changed dramatically in the last twenty-something years; surely they're not gonna have Matlida et al. facing legitimate dangers, right? Right?

**THIS EPISODE WILDLY AND VASTLY SPOILS THE PLOT OF GLASS ONION** This week, the Unauthorized Critics Circle is covering co-host Daniel's favourite musical of all time - Matilda the Musical! Tim Minchin's musical, which Dan loves a lot, was recently adapted into a motion picture, and Joshua and Dan (who has famously loved Matilda since the first time he saw it on stage) are on the pulse to review it! We think you'll enjoy this episode as much as Dan enjoys Matilda, as our co-hosts cover such topics as Dan's favourite moment in Matilda, Dan's favourite lyric in Matilda, and how much Dan believes in Tim Minchin's skills as a musical theatre artist. Tune in next time when we talk about Applause; specifically, the Encores! production's performance on February 8th 2008. "Matilda The Musical" had its world premiere at the London Film Festival and is now coming to Netflix on December 25th. Based on the 2011 stage musical of the same name, which is based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl (which was turned into the popular 1996 film by Danny DeVito), the film has drawn a positive response for its musical numbers, performances from breakout star Alisha Weir, Emma Thompson and Lashana Lynch and adaptation from the screen to the stage. Director Matthew Warchus was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Luca Guadagnino, director of Call Me By Your Name, talk about his new movie, the dark cannibal romance Bones And All, and to spare him the ignominy of Chris Hewitt bellowing *that* song at him, we asked John Nugent to Zoom with Guadagnino instead. The result is a fascinating and frank discussion about the director's creative process. Also being frank and fascinating about their creative process is Tim Minchin, the genius songwriter behind the tunes of this week's Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical. He talks to Helen O'Hara about turning the hit stage musical into a movie, and about the sad failure of the quite wonderful Groundhog Day The Musical. Then, in the podbooth, Chris Hewitt returns and, as well as Googling 'how to host a podcast', welcomes Helen, James Dyer and fourth chair newcomer, Kelechi Ehenulo for discussions of random encounters with Emma Thompson in a lift, the best sequels to not feature the main character from the previous movie, the week's movie news (such as it is; thanks a bunch, Thanksgiving!), and review Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, She Said, Strange World, Matilda, The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special, and more.
